EXCERPT

PROLOGUE

Two elderly men arrived in a quiet neighborhood in an expensive SUV. They were nervous, one of them full of rage and debating what to do after the call he had just received.

“So, how do you intend to confront him?”

The old man breathed deeply, trying to contain himself. He was still dressed in his perfectly fitting cashmere suit. “I really do not know, but let’s see what he has to say. At the moment these are pure speculations. Let us find out if it is true.”

“Okay,” the other quite bulky but more casually dressed man responded, “we’ll see how he reacts. I am more than curious as to what he will say. I know him well; I hired and trained Jack for the job. This possibility seems so remote to me.”

“There is his house, up there on the left. Slow down and turn off the headlights. The street seems to be quiet.”

“Okay, John.”

Darkness had already cloaked the city, but the street was fully illuminated by the flickering glow of lanterns, which cast long shadows. The bulky driver stopped and switched off the engine and was about to get out when suddenly he saw someone remarkably familiar exit the house. “Look John, what is he doing here?”

“The same guy who came to my house this afternoon. Do you recognize him, Adam?”

“Of course, no mistake, you asked me to take care of him for a long time. It’s Michael Fletcher. Why is he coming out of his house?”

“Let’s just wait and watch him.”

“He always had a close relationship with Jack; in fact, I heard rumors that Jack took him in after his release.”

“Well, Jack seems to really have put a lot of flusters in his ear, the way he turned up at my house today. Now this explains everything.”

They continued to survey Fletcher as he turned up his collar of his coat, slipped his hands into his pockets and stepped away, marching into the dark.

“Okay, let’s go.”

Both men got out of the car silently and approached Jack’s house, whose door stood wide open. The bulky man led the way as they walked up the path onto the patio and entered the brightly lit corridor. He knocked on the door first.

“Hey Jack, it’s Adam, how are you, old pal? Your visitor left the door open.”

The older man stepped past his bulky buddy into the living room and stopped dead when he saw a bloody figure on the ground. Both men stared and then looked at each other, unable to say anything. Blood was oozing out of Jack’s skull. A pistol was lying on the ground, wrapped in his gloved right hand.

The bulky man stepped closer and leaned down to take a look. “Seems like he killed himself. The way he is holding it, yes, I guess it’s suicide.”

“So why is Fletcher walking away so casually?”

“Good question.” The bulky man bent down further and removed the gun carefully with a tissue that he pulled out of his inside pocket. Then he took a long sniff at the gun and the glove. “Absolutely no doubt—I can smell the gunpowder on his glove. He shot himself.”

The old man also took a step closer, squinted his eyes and said, “Take them off, very carefully, both of them, and place the gun just a bit further away, beyond a possible reach. I have an idea. The gloves, you give to me.”

About the Author
Michael J. Kundu
Michael J. Kundu was born in London, Great Britain, in 1969 to an Indian
father and a German mother. He has lived in various places in Europe. His love
for reading has prompted him to write this book giving this crime novel more
than an edge of mystery and suspense, but also a contemporary perspective on
life.

He has a great passion for learning languages and travelling across the globe.
He enjoys spending time with his family and lives in Luxembourg with his
Italian wife and two teenage children.

My multinational background, coupled with my marriage to someone of a
different nationality, has endowed me with a wealth of diverse experiences.
Having traversed the globe, speaking multiple languages and immersing myself
in various cultures, the profound value of each individual has become a
cornerstone of my worldview. These multicultural encounters have not only
fostered a deep appreciation for the uniqueness of every person but have also
instilled in me a commitment to promoting mutual respect, free from the
shackles of prejudice related to color or religion. In composing my book,
these experiences have permeated not only this narrative …but also the
forthcoming sequel.
