Daniels’ voice broke his thoughts.

“Say when, Catherine.”

“Okay, Ethan, hit it.”

Daniels tapped several computer keys. A sharp crack sounded. Gabriel flinched as the door’s locking mechanism was set free. Slowly, the one-foot-thick steel door glided open. A hot prickly flush coursed from his head to his toes. His legs suddenly felt weak, like his muscles would give out and he’d slump to the floor in a sweaty heap.

The vault door was now fully extended revealing a dark cavern ahead. Catherine stepped into the void. As she did, an amber-colored light flooded the space. About eight feet in front of her was another steel barrier the size of a standard interior door.

“Step in, Mr. Ferro.”

Gabriel put one foot in front of the other and entered. Once he was in, the outer vault door closed with a deep and disturbing metallic clang. Suddenly, he felt small, scared, and insignificant. He was startled yet again when the tumblers on the door in front of them were released. Despite the sweat beads that had gathered on his brow, he felt cold and his mind was racing. I’m intelligent enough to accept that if intelligent life exists on Earth, it’s only reasonable it exists elsewhere, so get your act together. “Get a grip, Sparky,” he whispered.

“Did you say something, Mr. Ferro?”

Gabriel coughed. “Clearing my throat.”

As they cleared the second door, it closed behind them and the sound of the tumblers locking kicked in. The sudden realization they were sealed away from the outside world scraped at Gabriel’s already frayed nerves. He checked his ties Windsor knot and tugged at the hem of his navy blazer.

The vault was dark, too dark to see anything clearly. The only illumination came from a gooseneck floor lamp by the left wall. Once his eyes adjusted, he began scanning the space. He was able to make out a three-foot-high wooden table next to the lamp. Perched on it was a large flat-screen monitor, a DVD player, an assortment of DVDs along with a small stack of books and magazines. To his right was a brown leather sofa and a matching chair facing it. He could not be sure, but about fifteen feet from where they stood, he thought he saw a small bed pushed up against the back wall. Next to it was a table and two chairs. There was no sign of the extraterrestrial. That only served to heighten his anxiety. Several agonizing seconds of eerie, nerve-wracking silence passed, enough for his imagination to take hold. Like conjured up visions in an all too realistic dream, more grotesque images raced through his mind’s eye.

Catherine’s voice jolted him back. “You have a visitor.”

There was no response—that rattled Gabriel even more.

“This is Gabriel Ferro, Chief of Staff to the President of the United States.”

It was a straightforward introduction, no fluff, no formality. Seconds felt like minutes. Then, something was moving in the shadows back in the far-right corner near the table. Gabriel’s skin felt ice-cold, and his heart kicked hard at his chest. Ever so slowly, the alien inched its way toward them. At that moment, Gabriel wanted to leave this cold, dark chamber of horror as fast as his feet could carry him. Primal Fear, the kind that sticks to the back of one’s throat bubbling up like hot lava as a scream or a choking gasp, raced through him. Come on, his inner voice was shouting, one more step! Move into the bloody light. Get this nightmare the hell over with!

The alien stopped just short of the light. Gabriel strained to make out facial features, but he could not. He waited—seconds passed—more cold sweat formed on his brow.

“This is Gabriel Ferro and—”

“I did hear you the first time, Catherine.”

Finally, the alien stepped forward into what little light there was. Every imagined image that had raced through Gabriel’s mind turned out to be a miscalculation. Like a shot of adrenaline pumped straight into his veins, his whole being snapped alive. His mouth gaped, his spine went pole straight, and he took one brisk involuntary step back.

Part 1:

A Change of Plans

“We plan the way we want to live, but only God makes us able to live it” (Proverbs 16:9 MSG).

I’m the type of person who makes plans just for the sake of making plans, but let’s be honest; God’s plans are far greater than ours.

How do you put something like this into words? The unfathomable, the unspeakable, the unimaginable. How do you write into existence an experience that no one should have to endure? How do you share something so misunderstood, and often times unrelatable, with the rest of the world?

Honestly, I don’t know. But here goes nothing.

Something unheard of happened on the morning of September 1st, 2016.

Here’s what I knew: I was going to be a mother. I knew I was going to be re-sponsible for raising and loving a beautiful human being, and I knew my life was going to change forever.

It was around Christmas of 2015 when I found out I was pregnant. I had absolutely no idea or feeling, no natural instinct that just told me I was going to have a baby. My boyfriend, let’s call him AJ, knew though. Immediately.

I know it may seem strange that I, with my faith, did not wait until marriage to have sex or start a family. Even if it doesn’t seem strange in today’s world, I feel it is important to acknowledge that I was not married when I became pregnant and that the journey that led to me sharing this story would not exist if I had waited. This is a testimony to how God changed my life, and mistakes are a part of that. I am only human, and I know that I have an amazing God who died for our sins. AJ and I both longed for that close relationship with our creator, but we prioritized ourselves in the relationship and not God.

That was our shortcoming.

We were together for 11 months, almost a year, and we knew that we were madly in love with each other. Time, however, was our worst enemy. Eight months into our relationship I was accepted into the college of my dreams, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. I always wanted to travel the world and attend fashion shows. I wanted to be the person that styled the models or help set up fancy events and shows. It was my dream, my goal, and I was on my way. The problem? Distance.

The institute was in Los Angeles, a two-hour distance from AJ. We did our best and made it work, but the weekend after Christmas, our world was meant to change. He came down to visit on the 26th and I was so excited to show him where my dreams would soon come true. We went to the mall I worked at and took in all the beautiful Christmas decorations, we got delicious Chinese food and Sprinkle cupcakes, and made such a beautiful memory of our time together. It was a day neither of us would forget.

When we got back to my house, he immediately asked if I would take a pregnancy test because he had a feeling. I laughed it off at first, saying there was no way I could be pregnant. I had no symptoms, everything was normal.

But he insisted, so we went back out and found the nearest drug store. In my disbelief, I bought five tests, because I just needed to be sure.

I remember being in the bathroom waiting impatiently as the results came up on the first test. I don’t even think I remember all of them, it was such a blur, but five tests later I had five positives.

Everything happened so fast after that. I was on my knees in tears, denial taking over me. Grief isn’t just something felt for lost loved ones, but also for the loss of a potential future, and I felt it then. The guilt for being upset also hit me. People fight to become pregnant so often that it felt unappreciative to feel this way. It was a blessing, but it certainly did not feel that way that first night I took the tests.

AJ had always wanted a family of his own, but I was only twenty. I wasn’t ready to be a mother. I begged time to slow down, to go back. I believe now that was the bargaining phase.

And just like that, my time in Los Angeles at my dream school ended. One of the biggest accomplishments of my life became a short memory. While I know many mothers who still go to school and reach their career aspirations, I needed to be around family at this time in my life, so I moved back home.

Coming of Age

Date Published: May 5, 2021

Publisher: MindStir Media

How did the first Americans end up last in America?

From Dog to Wolf is the story of Daniel Graywolf, an Oglala Lakota teen struggling to survive on the impoverished Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Shy and a loner, young Daniel escapes the drama of life there by wandering the creek beds and washed-out roads in search of specimens for his rock collection; a practice that has earned him the regrettable nickname “Rock Dog.” One day he meets Dr. Robert Timberland, a geology professor from the nearby university. Together they solve the mystery of an important find Daniel has made while searching ancestral lands near the reservation. With the help and wisdom of tribal elders, they devise a plan that brings about the long-deserved restitution for his Sioux ancestors. To succeed will require considerably more of Daniel than just human resolve.

PROLOGUE

Many of america’s closest allies blamed us for the financial collapse of 2008 and lost faith in our ability to manage the world’s financial system. In 2013, as a sign of distrust, Germany shocked world markets with plans to repatriate 300 tons of their gold, stored in the vaults of the New York Federal Reserve. When the US Treasury refused Germany’s request to audit its own gold, supposedly held in the Fed’s vaults, and insisted on a seven-year plan to return a relatively small amount of bullion, the world took notice. It appeared that Germany’s original gold may no longer be held in the New York Federal Reserve vaults and, in fact, the Fed may not have 300 tons of gold on hand to return to Germany.

Russia and China have long awaited an opportunity to free themselves from the American financial dominion that so strongly influences their economies and limits their expansionist activities. Believing that America did not have the gold reserves it claimed, while watching America’s debt soar past twenty-two trillion dollars, they determined it was time to challenge the US petrodollar as the world’s reserve currency. The two American adversaries embarked on a five-year plan, aimed at the acquisition of enough

gold bullion to back a new joint currency; one that would replace the dollar and thus end America’s world financial hegemony.

The Wolf’s Den, Book 4

Paranormal Romance

Date Published:11-26-2021

He’s waited a lifetime for her.

Melody Walker has a dark history. It’s only been three years since she was bitten by a rogue werewolf, and her husband was killed. Since she’s unable to shift, she’s tried to live as a human, desperate to hold on to what she knows. She’s worried her best isn’t good enough when an enormous man shows up at her doorstep and changes the game.

Gunner Newsom didn’t expect to meet his mate when his pack took over the community at Rhodes, but he’s grateful for the gift of her. She’s everything he’s ever wanted. Witty, resilient, and sexy as hell. There’s just one thing that stands in his way. His female is fighting to protect her only child, a little girl who’s in danger of being given to her paternal grandparents as she’s human and her mother is a werewolf.

What belongs to him, he loves, cherishes, and keeps. Not only will he claim the mate he’s been given, but he’ll also protect the daughter he’s accepted as his own. He’ll kill anyone or anything that attempts to stand in his way.

Excerpt

He stared at her, wishing things were different between them. If she was a pure werewolf, she’d pick up what he was trying to throw down. She’d understand straight away. But that wasn’t the case. She had to come to terms with what was currently flowing through her.

“I want you to think about that when you go to bed, Melody,” he instructed quietly. “Think about how things would be if I were sleeping beside you instead of taking refuge on the couch. I want you to take in what you’ve learned about me the last few weeks. Remember every single thing I’ve done since I’ve come here.”

He ripped his eyes from hers, severing that kind of contact, waging a war within himself. He had to push his bestial nature back to address her as a man and not the beast she thought him to be. He cleared his throat when was in complete control, striving for calm.

“Consider how things could be with me by your side. You don’t have to be afraid. Not of me or anyone else. Take a minute and envision the life I can give you if you’ll let me.”
