Twenty years ago, Reaper of Souls Kassidy Simmons battled Azra-El, the
Angel of Death and won—or so she thought.

Now, a number of strange and unexplained deaths are afflicting
Kassidy’s quiet New York town. She wishes she didn’t care. But
she does.

Her empathic abilities are expanding beyond her control, and the intense
emotions are tearing apart her relationships. They’re also degrading
the magical wards put in place to protect her from other Reapers and the
even deadlier Wraiths—onyx-eyed henchmen of Azra-El.

Allied with her longtime mentor and a college professor with ties to
her past, Kassidy learns that the untimely deaths are regenerating Azra-El,
and that the only way to stop him is with the Scythe of Cronus, the
legendary weapon of the God of Death.

To save her loved ones and reset the natural order, Kassidy must journey
home and confront a past she’s been running from for two decades.
She’ll face-off with enemies, old and new, and through a haze of fear
and addiction, Kassidy will learn the secrets of her heritage, and challenge
head on the one being she fears most—herself.

“You shouldn’t be able to do that here, Reaper,” he said, pointing to the sickle at his throat with his eyes.

“What?” Kassidy asked absently.

Holy shit!

Kassidy gasped at the weapon pressed to his throat. He was right. She shouldn’t be able to do that. No Reaper, not even a Wraith could manifest weapons in the Nexus. The only beings with that power were the Primus—and he never did it because he simply didn’t need to wield that type of power there—and Death himself.

She backed away, staring at the sickle, then willed it to transform back into a hand.

“Perhaps now you see why I found you so interesting,” Azra-El said.

“Found?”

“Okay, found and still find. Happy?”

There was that fucking smile again.

“What do you want?”

“Come on. Can’t we catch up? How’ve you been, love?”

“Fuck you! That’s how I’ve been. Now what do you want?”

“Okay, fine. I want to kill you, of course. That goes without saying.” He shrugged his shoulders. Nonchalant. Playfulness intertwined with menace.

Kassidy inched back from him, each step slow and deliberate. She tried to drift out of the Nexus but couldn’t. He’s fucking blocking me! Shit!

“We didn’t finish our last conversation, my dear. It was like we were talking, and then all of a sudden, you stabbed me with those blades. I don’t even know where you found those fucking things. But I never got a chance to argue my point.”

“Which was?”

“That you and I need to work together to establish some new rules to the natural order.”

“Oh, that line of horseshit,” Kassidy said.

“You wound me.” Azra-El, held his hand to his chest, feigning offense.

“Yeah, I did wound you. Sadly, not enough.”

Azra-El’s hands dropped to his side.

“Touché.”

His eyes radiated a dim red. She did her best to remain calm, but every Reaper knew that when his eyes glowed that way, he was angry.

“You’re after my power, aren’t you? You wanted to fatten me up, make me stronger, then kill me and absorb my abilities. That was your plan.”

“I mean, can you blame me?” he asked with a sly grin. “Look, in any corporation, the idea is to get promoted, right? Not to stay in the same position doing the same thing millennia after millennia.”

Kassidy’s fists clenched tighter. She shifted from side to side, doing her best to keep her rage in check. “So that night you found me, that was a set up?”

Azra-El nodded.

“In exchange for power and immortality, you instructed a boy to terrorize me? To beat me? To . . . rape me?”

Azra-El held up a hand.

“Whoa. I told him I needed you to be down and out. I needed you in a state near death.”

“But you didn’t care how he did it?”

Azra-El shrugged.

“And all so you could have power? You ruined my life for power?” Kassidy asked.

“Ruined your life? Ruined your life! I saved you, you ungrateful little bitch! I gave you a chance to take vengeance. Vengeance on him, on all the Jeremy Reins of the world. On everyone who’d ever treated you wrong. I gave you a chance to be powerful for once in your miserable fucking life! And for that gift, you spat in my face and tried to kill me.”

“You orchestrated all of it. You took away any chance for me to be normal, to find my own way. You turned me into a monster, a killer, all in an effort to make you more powerful. You didn’t save me. It was all for you. I was happy to die. I was happy to fade away.”

Kassidy advanced toward Azra-El again. Her power building. Fists clenched.

“Then why did you say yes?”

Those six words stopped her in her tracks. She relaxed her fists.

“Cat got your tongue? Or are you afraid of the truth?”

“What truth?”

“That deep within there’s a darkness, a hunger, a thirst for power, for reckoning. You needed what I gave you, and when it was offered, you willingly accepted.”

“You tricked me. With what I went through, what human being wouldn’t want that?”

Azra-El laughed again. His eyes dimmed, transitioning from red to their natural state. “Sweetheart, you’re not human. Do you think most humans walk around feeling the emotions of others? Sensing when death is near? Do you think they see Reapers and Wraiths as easily as they see stop signs and clouds in the sky? Even now you have abilities beyond the norm. You bested two Wraiths in the last few days. You bested me twenty years ago. No, my dear, whatever you are, it isn’t human. Far from it. Why do you think I chose you?”

Excerpt

One starry night,

When the sky was super bright,

Little Ari climbed into bed

And turned out the light.

I wonder what I’ll dream tonight.

What places will I go?

I guess until I close my eyes

I’ll never really know.”

What is a dream?” asked a voice

That came from down below.

Ari looked at the floor,

In shock. “Say it isn’t so!”

Pepper, was that you?

Did you just speak, for heaven’s sake?

Nah, you’re a dog!

I’m not dreaming yet. I’m still awake!”

Pepper looked at Ari

And tilted her head to the right.

Yep, I can talk!” said Pepper,

Giving Ari quite a fright.

First, Ari started screaming

And headed for the door.

Then she remembered, “Pepper’s my friend,”

And wasn’t afraid anymore.

EXCERPT

A second buzz emitted, this time with a text from Ben.

Parked out back. Lets go.

Josh flipped out the lights, grabbed the bag of trash, and headed out the door. He tossed the bag into dumpster then entered the car.

“How did the questioning go?”

“Hunter seemed disappointed that our stories matched. He asked why I wasn’t driving the same car as I had that day. Told him both were rentals. When I travel, I turn in one and rent another when I return.” Ben chuckled. “He also tried to trip me by asking where we ordered the pizza.”

Josh frowned. “I told him it was leftover.”

“He was fact checking.”

Except their alibis consisted more of half-truths than solid facts.

“Good thing you remembered those security cameras along Federal.”

Ben shrugged. “We needed a cover story anyway. Did you get the impression they were considering if you and Stoddard were collaborating?”

“No, but Tom suggested I had reason to want to kill him.”

“Speaking of killing, did you dispose of that gun you had?”

“Yes, I broke it down the way you taught me. I took a trip upstate and dropped off pieces along the way.” Rest stop. Gas stations. Dumpsters. “What about the one you used?”

A side-eyed glance burned its way across the car. “Taken care of. Should be interesting to find out what Wallace does with Hunter’s suspicions.”

“You’re getting a kick out of this, aren’t you?” Josh twisted in his seat, sending a glare of his own. “This isn’t a game. We could end up in prison.”

“Take it easy, Sundance. We’ve covered our tracks. Nothing links me to Stoddard. Hunter’s trying to make something out of a ten-second video of two buddies getting together.”

Josh glanced out the window. “Where are we going?”

“To dinner. Eddie’s work for you?”

Josh snorted. “Ben Hampshire is going to eat at Eddie’s Sea-Shack?”

“Don’t be a snob, Canfield.” A smile tugged at the corner of Ben’s mouth. “We’ll go over the reports I have on those systems. When Hunter spills his guts to Wallace who in turn asks Paige, she’ll confirm our story.”

Josh sank down in his seat with a grunt. “One of these days, you won’t be the smartest guy in the room.”

A laugh tumbled out of Ben’s mouth as he flipped on the blinker to turn south at the Crossroads. “Like that’s going to happen.”

A wisp of something cold washed through Josh’s soul, and the memory of odors from a greasy kitchen pushed into his throat.

“It did happen.” He turned his head to catch Hampshire’s scowl. “That night at the diner when Stoddard set you up.”

Ben’s eyes widened then he gave a slow nod. “I had my suspicions from the beginning about that meeting. I didn’t expect to him to send three people. Didn’t expect you to show up either.” He gave a short laugh. “Did I ever thank you for saving my ass?”

Josh snorted. “You said—and I quote—‘thanks for back there.’”

“Glad I didn’t forget. As far as that parody Hunter put on today, forget it. He’s on an ego trip and taking advantage of Wallace being out of town. We have nothing to worry about.”

Except Tom Hunter’s determination to solve Nathan Stoddard’s murder put both Ben and Joshua in the spotlight. As brilliant as Ben was, Tom’s ambition could prove to be way more dangerous.

Three strangers, one dire day…and hope for the rest of their lives.

The day he graduated Julliard, I sat in the Hall and silently cried tears of joy. He was so sure, so confident. My little boy was all grown up. Warren was the only person who could make me think twice about my most ardent convictions. He could have done anything he put his mind to and done it with class and brilliance. That was Warren: more talent in his hand then I had in my body. All I ever wanted for him was happiness. And my last thought before I died was just how proud of him I was…I hope he knew the same. My name is Frank Neal and Warren Neal is my son.

There’s a picture of my father in my home. I remember the day it was taken, my seventh grade science fair. My experiment, a balloon rocket to prove propulsion stem activity. It was his idea. When I asked him why, he said “It’s the theory of thrust son, and thrust is exactly how you should start every day of your life!” In contrast, he once declined an offer to be a District Court judge, an appointment of fourteen years with a pension to follow, saying he could never sit anywhere for eight hours a day. That was the dichotomy of my father and I’ve been trying to figure him out ever since. I’m Gene Bonner’s son, Ben.

Her life was so wonderful: a standing reservation at the Ritz for high tea with Nora, black car service to Saks on the Main Line and two weeks at Canyon Ranch spa every winter. Jan was grounded, always grounded. I made sure of that. She had it all, a husband we loved like a son, a beautiful healthy daughter and enough wealth to want for nothing. But there was always something missing within her…a sadness. We rarely discussed it; she was always so outwardly strong. I’m Lea Pickett, Jan London’s mother.

Historical Fiction

Lily Fairchild follows the life of a pioneer woman on the Canadian frontier over 77 years of her long life. She is witness to and a pawn of the great historical events of that period: the Underground Railroad, the clearing of the forest, the coming of the railroads, the discovery of oil, the two Riel Rebellions in the West and the flu pandemic of 1918. A story of love and survival.

KIRKUS REVIEW

Long-haul, multigenerational historical fiction such as this is often a victim of skewed perspective, as authors, deeply ensconced in often years of research, often overestimate how much detail their readers will want to endure. Gutteridge’s narrative is prodigiously researched (and includes a bibliography), but he never overloads his audience; instead, he seamlessly works the historical grounding into what is, first and foremost, an intensely personal story. The book’s large and varied cast is uniformly well drawn, but Lily towers over the rest; from her earliest scenes, she’s by far the most compelling figure in the narrative. Gutteridge believably and effectively captures her youthful exuberance, as well as her resilience, even in the face of a heartbreaking tragedy in the book’s final pages. He combines his character study with beautifully evocative prose; at one point, for instance, after sunset, “Lily was sure she could hear the River tuning up for its nightsong”; at another, a character’s skin is described as having “the pallor and touch of gray-white mushrooms too long in the rain.” Overall, the author does an excellent job of giving his narrative the feel of a life as it is lived. Readers of such books as Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove (1985) or Anna Waldo’s Sacajawea (1978) will see a similar kind of storytelling here; it’s a difficult feat to manage, but Gutteridge does so. A long but intensely involving tale of a tempestuous life.

About the Author

Don Gutteridge is the author of 71 books, including 22 novels and 39 books of poetry. He is a graduate of Western University, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. He lives in London, Ontario.
