In life there is often a question that continuously surfaces. That
question is, “who am I?”

This thought further provokes the question: “Who am I beneath the layers of
conditioning?” The truth is you were born great. We all were. You still are.

Through social conditioning and societal expectations, many have lost the
connection with their true power and nature. This power holds the truth of the
soul, and allows us to explore change and rise to our highest potential. Each
person has an offering. A seed of power they were born with. Once cultivated,
amazing things begin to happen. You shift.

The Wakeful Seed not only invites introspection in, but also provides you with
tools and philosophies to help you gain perspective and clarity. Various
topics and philosophies are explored through storytelling and self
explorations the author calls “Moment of Effort.” If you’ve been curious about
hypnosis, past lives, life and death, navigating fear, how to become more
authentic, or how to connect with your power, this book is for you.

Anthony Morgan is the last man I should ever work for.
Too bad I
don’t have a choice.

It started with an email from Jennifer Gonzales.
It ended with me walking into
a boardroom face-to-face with the man who once loved her.
The same man who
looks at me like I’m a threat to everything he built.

And maybe I am.

He’s cold. Controlled.
Italian billionaire in an Armani suit, hiding
bruises behind bank accounts.
He thinks I’m still loyal to my former
best friend—the woman who broke his brother’s heart and stole
something she should’ve never touched.

But I’m not here for Belle.
I’m here to do a job.

Security.
Protection.
No distractions.

Except Anthony Morgan is a distraction.

His eyes strip me bare.
His voice is a seduction I never saw coming.
And every
time we fight, it feels like foreplay.

Getting too close to him is a mistake.
Falling for him?
Dangerous.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from war zones and
heartbreak…
It’s that the most forbidden fire burns the hottest.

And Anthony Morgan is pure flame.

Chapter One

Stepping into the lion’s den was supposed to be a metaphor, but the reality hit me like a freight train as I crossed the threshold into the Morgan boardroom. The sharp echo of my heels against the stark, polished marble floor sounded like a countdown, each click amplifying the tension that hung in the air. The room was coldly immaculate, a showcase of the Morgan empire’s power and wealth, yet nothing could compare to the chill radiating from Anthony Morgan’s gaze. His icy stare halted me in my tracks, a force so intense it left me breathless and disoriented. I could almost feel the temperature drop as he scrutinized me, an intruder daring to invade his territory.

I had anticipated this meeting would be challenging. I’d run through every possible scenario in my mind, envisioning resolutions ranging from a simple dismissal to an outright ejection. But facing Anthony’s wrathful glare, I realized how woefully unprepared I truly was for the raw hostility emanating from him. His anger was palpable, a heatwave of intensity that made me question my sanity for even stepping foot in this place. The man I’d never met until today looked ready to hurl me out the window—or worse.

I should have backed out. I’d sensed the mistake the moment his assistant sent the email. But the Morgans were titans, their influence sprawling across the globe. Their business meant success, and failure had never been an option for me. So, I donned my best suit and waded into this viper pit, determined. Now, Anthony’s glacial eyes challenged me to speak first. I envisioned all the ways this could end badly: defenestration, a cement bath, or worse yet, sleeping with the fishes like in those old mobster flicks. Sure, I was being dramatic, but those eyes could freeze lava. I couldn’t help but chuckle inwardly at the thought of Anthony Morgan’s glare being so potent it could freeze a cup of coffee in seconds. If he ever tried bartending, his signature drink would undoubtedly be the “Frostbite Frappuccino,” guaranteed to give customers brain freeze and a shiver down their spine.

Despite the icy atmosphere, I extended my hand and mustered my best smile. “Mr. Morgan, I’m Em Fletcher.”

The air in the room felt thick, almost oppressive, as I stepped inside. The polished mahogany table gleamed under the soft light, reflecting the tension that hung like a shadow between us. Anthony Morgan sat there, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, a fortress of muscle and indifference. I could almost hear the gears grinding in his mind as he assessed me, sizing me up like a prizefighter before the bell rang.

I couldn’t shake off the mental image of Anthony Morgan attempting to crack a smile. It seemed as likely as a penguin doing stand-up comedy, entertaining, yet highly improbable. Did he ever crack a smile? It would probably cause a solar eclipse from the sheer rarity of the occasion.

“Em Fletcher,” I said, forcing a smile that felt more like a grimace. “I’m here for the meeting.”

He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he leaned back in his chair, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as if trying to decipher a riddle wrapped in an enigma. The silence stretched between us, thickening with each passing second. I could feel the weight of my past choices pressing down on me and my history with Belle and the Morgans, the loyalty I had once sworn to her.

Who knew that facing down one of the most powerful figures in the business world could also feel like being trapped in an episode of “The Office,” complete with awkward silences and exaggerated expressions?

EXCERPT

Preface

Years ago, during the Carter Administration when interest rates skyrocketed to twenty percent or more, I used to frequent a restaurant called Sebastian’s in Raleigh N.C.  A group of us would show up after five to quaff a few beers and shoot the breeze.  One night, as we bantered back and forth about the state of the economy, one of the guys made the comment, “I bet right now it costs more than ten dollars to make a ten-dollar bill.”

From that profound realization, we began to create a screenplay (at least in our minds it was destined to be a star-studded box-office success starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon) about two desperate men who embarked on a comedy filled journey into the world of counterfeit.

Each night when two or more of us would slide into our booth, we would kick around how Walter and Jack would accomplish their mission. I wish I had a tape recording of those sessions – they were brilliant and often led to alcohol laced cacophonous laughter. Those memories of the good times we had at Sebastian’s have given me cause for laughter for the past 45 years. Recovering from hip surgery back in 2012, I endeavored to record our screenplay on paper.  But to my dismay, I realized that many of the funnier scenes had long since faded so I found myself creating a whole new story based upon the same premise. Upon retirement, I finally found the time to complete this project.

I’m sure some of the gang (Dick, Dave, Ben, and Glen) have died – but for those who remain, this book is a memorial to the good times we shared.

I wrote this book in three months.  It took my wife, Beverly, countless hours over a six-month period to correct my grammar, and what she calls my “improper use of the English language” and make sense of my unorthodox sentence structure.   She offered some great ideas, and I owe a great debt of gratitude to her for making this book possible. I would be remiss to not mention my friends Bert and RuthAnne Moss, who read the first versions and offered good advice and much encouragement. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  And my friends Kenneth Pearson and Kathy Kresge who read the book and encouraged me to pursue having it published. Thank you all again.

It is important to note that this book is a complete work of fiction.  None of this happened and none of the characters are real.  While it is peppered with interesting facts that are true, it has a healthy dose of B.S. that enabled me to keep writing without getting bogged down by mundane things such as truth. Surely the artful merging of imagination and fact is the signature of any great storyteller.  At least it is for my stories – as my wife so often reminds me.

God has richly blessed me throughout my life, and it is my desire to be a blessing to others. Having spent over 45 years in North Carolina, I have decided to donate all profits from the sale of this book to Samaritan’s Purse, earmarked for the victims of Hurricane Helene.

Navigating My Way Through Mental Illness

Self-Help

Victoria Molta is a person who has lived with a diagnosed serious mental
illness for over forty years. But more than that, she is a writer who has
chronicled her life journey in her book, “Lost Before I Could See: Navigating
My Way Through Mental Illness.” In her book, she has chosen to write about her
adventures and challenges, and though there have been setbacks, losses, and
failures along the way, she never gives up. She continues to grow and learn,
no matter how terrifying it can be to start new episodes of life with very
little knowledge or experience, as well as a disability. She never ceases to
go forward, with strength and courage, and wants the reader to know that
whether living with a disability or not, life is hard. But the main point she
wants to make clear is that she never gives up and never loses hope.

Victoria takes the reader on a kaleidoscopic tour beginning with her childhood
in southern California, living in the San Gabriel Valley with her family. She
describes her father’s mental illness and alcoholism, and how, eventually, she
succumbs to mental illness as well, as a young adult. She describes her family
as one born of privilege and wealth, though definitely not exempt from tragedy
and dysfunction. Through all her breakdowns and setbacks, she continues to
rise and find meaning from chaos. From that, she develops empathy for people
who have been marginalized by society and finds deep connections. In her 30s,
she marries Bill, a man she had met in a halfway house where they both were
living during the 1980s. It turns out to be a wonderful life partnership where
they support each other in their work experiences as well as find joy in
adventurous travel experiences.

Later in life, they buy a house and settle down near the shore of Long Island
Sound with their rescue dog, Mandy. They appreciate the simple things in life.
Peace that once seemed boring is now so appreciated because drama, which had
dominated her life for so many years, no longer matters to her.

California Dreams

In 1963, my parents chased a dream to start a new life out west in the valley of the San Gabriel mountains on the outskirts of Los Angeles. I would see moving lights wave across the dark sky like a welcoming hand signaling a movie premiere. My parents chose southern California not to be stars but to gravitate to a place of make-believe; a place where they too could pretend.

I started my new life as a two-year-old playing in a wading pool or a sandbox in our backyard. My parents brought us to Disneyland for the first time. We also piled in the car to the beaches along the Pacific Ocean where the powerful waves crashed onto the sand like explosions.

As parents of three small children, my mom and dad made the decision to move away from tony Winnetka, Illinois on the north shore of Lake Michigan outside Chicago. Both sides of my parent’s families had originated from the Chicago area.

I was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1961, two years after the birth of my brother Ben. My sister Amy was born two years after me. When she was an infant, my father had been fired from his position as a lawyer at a law firm in the city. After that, he agreed to work as a trust officer at the First National Bank of Chicago where his father-in-law was Vice-President. Unfortunately, my dad didn’t get along with his supervisors and colleagues. He fled to bars on his lunch breaks for several hours. He never fit in and was ultimately fired from that position as well.

So, my parents decided to make a geographic cure to California and start over in a new place with a blank slate without the baggage and high expectations from their prominent parents and other relatives. They could redefine themselves. They bought a luxury ranch house and settled in a wealthy town called San Marino. We were now halfway across the country, on the west coast of the United States.

From the outside, we fit in and appeared successful. We were of the same race, class, religion and educational background as most of the others; white, upper middle class, Christian, col-lege-educated. These classifications were what defined success in mid-20th century America. We appeared to meet the standards of the American dream. We were supposed to hold the key to the magic kingdom; open the door and the room was golden. We were supposed to have the power to do anything we wanted to do and be anything we wanted to be. We were supposed to be the leaders, the movers and shakers; or so it was drilled into the heads of people in our town.

I cherished certain memories of growing up in California. My maternal great-grandmother Mersey was the only one other relative who lived near our family. I loved her dearly. I also had many friends growing up including Bonnie, my best friend with whom I shared many happy experiences.

However, there were also underlying disturbances, turmoil and trauma. Beneath the surface of my own mind, trouble was brewing. Mental illness and inner disturbance, likely inherited from my dad, would ultimately take over my life and veer me in a direction I could never have imagined.
