In 1030 C.E., Cnute, king of England, Denmark, and Norway, sends Harald,
his middle son, to the Kingdom of Dublin to meet with his Norse-Irish
allies. Harald’s mission is to coordinate an invasion of the northern
Welsh kingdom of Gwynedd, to replace King Rhydderch who is growing too
powerful on England’s borders. Harald is reluctant to be involved in
affairs of state, but agrees to go, even though his beloved wife, Selia, is
unwell. Harald tells Selia he will not have to take part in the
fighting.

While she waits for Harald to return, Selia and her friend Gudrun befriend
a young and attractive gleeman (poet-minstrel). When the gleeman is accused
of a crime, Selia seeks witnesses in his defense.

Harald becomes involved in a conflict with Dublin’s neighbor, and to
appease the king of Dublin, he commits to leading their combined forces in
the attack on Wales. The plan is to replace King Rhydderch with Iago, the
weaker King of Anglesey. The more Harald learns of these monarchs, the more
his allegiance leans toward the man he has been sent to kill.

Will Harald unseat a strong and just ruler to carry out his
father/king’s commands, or will he tread a more righteous road, which
will destroy the life he and Selia have built in England?

The rain beat upon the thatch of Gwyn and Gudrun’s new hall, running off in rivulets that wet-tapped the ground in a thousand places on each side. The evening fire in the hall’s center warmed the occupants where they sat upon benches finishing the evening meal. The woodsmoke rose just well enough to find the smoke hole in the roof. The tang of the smoke was as natural as to them as the smell of the brook trout caught that day. This night all savoured barley-bread hearthcakes and a hearty pottage to which the fish chunks had been added. With Gudrun, Meleri, Selia, and their guest, three hirelings and their small families shared the meal. Two older children sat with Meleri. The housecarls Gunnar and Geir joined the gathering, while Sture acted as wardmann, watching through a watery curtain that dripped relentlessly from the roof of an out-building.

“Tell me, Trygve,” Selia said, scooping the pottage with her chunk of hearthcake, “why are you known as Trygve det Kostbar, ‘Trygva the Precious’?”

The ale-scop finished drinking from the horn of ale that was going round and passed it to another. “It is not always the best names that attach themselves. Whether it was originally a jest, I know not, but where I grew up in Jórvik, there was more than one Trygve. They say I was an attractive and well-behaved child and folk called me “Precious.”

“Not because of self-love?” Selia shot a knowing glance to Gudrun, who stifled a laugh.

“I…” Trygve began to speak but probably decided against defending himself. “No, I think not.”

“And what were the other Trygves called?” Gudrun asked with a barely hidden smile.

“Trygve Bent Nose,” Selia suggested.

“Trygve Small Balls?” said Gudrun.

“Trygve Cat Whiskers?” Selia added. By now the women laughed with abandon and even the children joined in.

“Trygve Dog Shit?” said the young boy, Cerdic.

To his credit, Trygve the Precious laughed along with everyone.

The jibing continued until everyone’s wits became stale and the names less clever.

“Well, Trygve,” said Gudrun. “It is a wise man who can laugh when the jest targets him,”

“An ale-scop would soon be unwelcome if he took offence at every fire he shared.”

Bringing the Kingdom to a War-Torn Country

Memoir

Date Published: 08-06-2024

Publisher: King’s Glory Publishing House

He was told to renounce his belief in God or face certain death. He chose
God. In this powerful story we follow the lives of two Ukrainian
natives-Peter and Irina Tkachuk, who went against the cultural norm of their
country and chose to follow God. Through uncertainty and an authoritative
rule, they chose radical obedience. The Tkachuks took the charge to share
the Kingdom with those around them from school age children to wounded
soldiers. The Ark of Ukraine is more than a missionary’s memoir. The
moving testimonials and resilient faith exhibited by the people in these
pages is captivating and moving. The work they did and the lives they
touched are nothing short of a miracle. This book will ignite your faith and
inspire you to do your part in sharing the light and life of the Kingdom.

EXCERPT

Irina’s father, a devoted pastor and missionary, passionately spread the gospel in his local region. He shepherded several churches, ensuring their spiritual growth. Volodymer was a compassionate man and would regularly visit the elderly members of the community. His faith and love for Jesus set him apart from the members of legalistic churches which were typical in Ukraine. People aren’t known to reach out to their neighbors in love even if they call themselves Christians, but Volodymer was unwavering in his beliefs and worked tirelessly to share the love of Christ with others, which left a lasting impact. His ceaseless commitment to serving the Lord continued until his passing in 2021 at the age of seventy-five. Unable to recover from the loss of her husband of 52 years, Nadia Yukhimets succumbed to her illness two years later, in January of 2024. Irina and her family still feel a profound loss.

Still, the legacy of faith endures in Irina’s family. Under Soviet Rule in Ukraine, Irina’s great-great-grandfather and his son were exiled to Siberia for steadfastly refusing to renounce their faith. His wife and daughter moved to Siberia to be close to them. Irina’s great uncle endured torture and eventually perished in a Siberian prison. Stalin caused widespread starvation in 1930-33 known as the “Holodomor, a term derived from the Ukrainian words for hunger (holod) and extermination (mor)” or “Great Famine” (Applebaum, A. (2024,3)) This was to eliminate a Ukrainian independence movement. According to Britannica, around at least 5 million perished in Ukraine during this time.

The “Great Purge” or sometimes known as the “Great Terror” occurred in 1937-1938. This dark period in history included a mass execution of thousands of people in Ukraine under Soviet control by Stalin, who was determined to purge his perceived enemies. It was during this time that General Secretary Joseph Stalin consolidated his power of the Communist Party.

To say that the Ukrainian people have suffered greatly under Soviet Rule is an understatement.

But the legacy of faith lives on. Irina’s siblings are, as of this writing, serving in some sort of Christian ministry. All her brothers are either deacons or pastors. Her father and all his brothers were pastors. Her grandfather was a pastor as well. Faith has sustained every family member.

Irina met Peter at a church meeting in Ukraine in 1989 after he returned home from serving in the army. They married on August 12, 1990, when Irina was only 16 years old!

“It was not easy being 16 getting married,” Irina explains. “For many years I kept everything inside me; I wouldn’t talk about it. I have learned to trust my feelings and share them with Peter over the years. But still, if I think he won’t understand me, I might not share my thoughts or feelings.

My Second Life Virtual Book Tour

My Second Life cover

Memoir

Date Published:   July 5, 2023

We all have two lives. We only get to experience living in the second after
we realize we only have just one.

Simon Yeats had his first real scare in life when he was attacked by a
kangaroo when he was seven years old. His first brush with the cliff-face
edge of death came when he was 12. His father drove his family down the
dangerous, 4WD only Skipper’s Canyon dirt road in New Zealand in a rented
minivan.

Including the occasions he was almost involved in two different plane
flight crashes, in the same night, there have been at least a half dozen
more times when the author has come within a moment’s inattention of being
killed.

However, none of those frightening incidents compare to what he experiences
after his son is abducted to South America.

This memoir is the story of how Simon used the traumatic experiences of his
life to give him strength to forge on during an incomprehensible 13 year
fight to be a father to his son.

What did it take for him to get to his second life?

It took him to truly understand what fear is.

EXCERPT

As I cross the hotel lobby floor towards the elevator, a man approaches me and addresses me by name.

Oh god, not again. I know what this is. Another process server who is going to hand me court documents to tell me I am now being sued for refusing to follow my ex-wife’s demands to buy my son another cell phone.

That would have been far more preferable.

The man leads me over to the couches in the hotel lobby, and we sit. He speaks only Portuguese so that I can only understand some of what he says. So, I use Google translate so I can fully understand what is going on.

His name is Michael.

The man is not from the court.

He is on the direct opposite side of the law, as it turns out.

He is a killer for hire.

My ex-wife has hired his services.

What? Right now, I know I am sitting in bizarro world.

About the Author

Simon Yeats

Simon Yeats has lived nine lives, and by all estimations, is fast running
out of the number he has left. His life of globetrotting the globe was not
the one he expected to lead. He grew up a quiet, shy boy teased by other
kids on the playgrounds for his red hair. But he developed a keen wit and
sense of humor to always see the funnier side of life.

With an overwhelming love of travel, a propensity to find trouble where
there was none, and being a passionate advocate of mental health,
Simon’s stories will leave a reader either rolling on the floor in
tears of laughter, or breathing deeply that the adventures he has led were
survived.

No author has laughed longer or cried with less restraint at the travails
of life.

CHAPTER ONE

Dirty-K

Fwapp, fwapp, fwapp, fwapp, fwapp. The sound you are hearing is that of my neighbor, the 3-man of my four-member fireteam, masturbating. You see, the walls here in dirty-K are pop-star thin and your neighbors are millimeters away. I am currently trying to go back to sleep but will have to wait thirty seconds or so until things quiet down. I cannot explain to you how important sleep is when you are in a combat zone. Your head must always be on a swivel, as bullets, bombs, and mortar rounds can literally fly right next to your brainbox at any moment. If you are not mentally alert here, you are dead. Anyway, I don’t know why the hell I’m telling you these things. I need to get back to sleep. I have an awfully long day of bullshit tomorrow— much like every day here in the dirty-K.

Welcome to Kandahar, Afghanistan, known to us as dirty-K. Everything in Kandahar, including the soldiers, is dirty, broken, or so old that ninety percent of it is held together with good old duct tape. We recently got plumbing, but before that we were using a hole in the ground or a port-a-potty. I don’t want to complain about the hole in the ground too much because it is normal operations for Middle Eastern individuals, but it still sucked for me. You have to try to hover over a hole with your pants half down, aim your asshole, and then not shit on your feet—freaking difficult. No thank you, I prefer a normal American–style toilet. I feel like you need to understand just how great we have it now with fresh plumbing. When everything constantly smells like shit, it starts to wear on unit morale. That’s how our life was. Our building smelled like shit, our rooms smelled like shit, our uniforms smelled like shit, and we smelled like shit. People would move two or more tables away from us in the chow hall because of how we smelled—though that might be a perk. We recently got the showers fixed as well, but before that, you just held a water bottle over your head. If you had a really good friend, they may have dumped water on you so you could use both hands to wash faster. If you were a loner, you had to master the art of scrubbing and pouring water on yourself at the same time—a serious challenge for some. There were plenty of people who opted out of taking showers for days at a time due to the pain in the ass it was to accomplish such a trivial task. Staying clean is nearly impossible with all the sand and people crammed into such a small space. After all, thousands of soldiers live within just a couple city blocks. There is mud everywhere. I generally have no clue how there is mud everywhere because it never rains, but I digress. Sand is also everywhere … but then a sandstorm hits and sand really is EVERYWHERE. I have never been to an environment so harsh, to be honest, and this is my tenth deployment. The bottom line is that living in the dirty-K is, well, filthy, and trying to maintain some level of sanitation is a constant struggle.
