EXCERPT 

“I think I should go to bed.” She ducks under my arm from where I pinned her against the counter. The glance she casts over her shoulder leaks her uncertainty into the air.

Fuck if I’m going down that easily.

I push open her door, grab her around the waist and pull her into me, taking her lips without caution. Her hands ball into fists and press against my shoulders. She turns away and I give her a second to think this through, to really consider what she and I could have, right now, right here. If she wanted. And I need her to want me.

“You can walk away,” I whisper, “but I can’t walk away without a fight.”

Her hands soften as her glazed olive-green eyes consider my offer. I let her go and hold my hands up, waiting for her choice. Will she chose me, or herself?

“Don’t stop fighting,” she whispers. “I want you to win.”

I lock the door and move swiftly to her side, afraid I’m imagining this. Afraid I’ve drunk too much—highly improbable—and am experiencing the most elaborate hallucination ever.

She takes my hands and walks me around the edge of her bed. Her hands slip over my chest, lower to my belt and undo me in a matter of seconds, both physically and mentally. I tug at her shirt hem and shimmy it up, exposing her gorgeous map of freckles. I lean down and kiss her neck, her shoulder, and the dip where her collar bones meet.

Her hands thread through my hair and direct me up. Her kiss settles on my lips. Her tongue traces their seam. I back her into the bed, no longer wanting to take it slow. She pulls her shirt over her head and reaches for the hook on her bra, but I hook her elbow with my finger, wanting to enjoy the sight a bit longer—loose red strands falling from her messy bun, curling just above her navy lace bra. I trace the outline of her nipples and they harden against the sheer material.

She sits on the edge of the mattress. I drop to my knees and lean over her legs, inhaling her and tracing a kiss across her breasts. She arches back and collapses on the bed, but not before grabbing a handful of my shirt and inviting me to stretch out with her.

She pulls my shirt over my head and traces the trail of tattoos across my chest before pulling me closer. I roll on top of her and settle a kiss on her lips. Warm fucking lips. Hot fucking body. Sexiest damn woman I’ve ever met.

“This is our first date, right?” she asks.

“No way.” I kiss her and stretch her arms overhead so I can trace the curves her body makes. “You don’t score on the first date.”

‘Thought we could change that.”

I could have walked away. Hell, I could have run. I could have gotten in a cab and gone home. I didn’t even have a purse with me, only some cash in my back pocket. I hadn’t wanted anybody to find my ID and put two and two together.

I didn’t. I stayed where I stood. Held in place by Drake’s voice.

“Are you going to answer me?” he asked. I turned to him.

“Could we not talk about this right here?” I asked, looking around. “It’s a little public out here.”

“Fine.” He grabbed my arm and pulled me around to the side of the building, where there was no one but us. “Tell me what’s wrong with you.”

“I thought after today you wanted me, is all. And I thought, okay, I’ll make a move. But you made me feel like…”

“Like what? A slut?” He smirked.

“You think this is funny? You’re disgusting!” I raised my hand to slap him, instinct taking over, and his hand was out in a flash to grip my wrist. He had the reflexes of a cat to go with the way he moved.

“That’s more like it,” he murmured. “That’s the real you. Not the one who flashes her tits and tries to come on to me. You’re the girl who tries to hit me because she doesn’t know what else to do to pretend she doesn’t want me.” He leaned in, pushing me back until I was pressed against the sun-warmed bricks of the Clubhouse, still holding their heat from earlier in the day. My body burned the way they did.

“Leave me alone, Drake.”

“You act like that because you don’t like the way I talk to you. You’re not used to guys talking to you that way. But you like it. You like it when I do it, and you hate yourself for it, and you put up walls between us.” His body was against me, all muscle and strength and power. I felt the heat coming from him, too, just like that from the bricks. Sweat trickled down the back of my neck.

“Stop this.” I turned my head away, as his mouth was so close to mine. “Not this way.”

“What way?”

“I don’t like it like this. Stop trying to overpower me. You don’t have to try so hard.”

“And neither do you.” He placed a finger under my chin, turning my head until our eyes met. “I wouldn’t work so hard to get through to you if you didn’t work so hard to keep me away. Why don’t you just give in to what you want? What we both want?”

“And that is what?” I could hardly breathe, my heart was racing so out of control. My knees were jelly, the blood rushing in my ears.

“For me to take you to my room and give you a night you’ll never forget.” He brushed his lips against mine, ever so gently, causing a blazing inferno to erupt and consume me. I leaned further in, closer to him, but he pulled back with a devilish grin.

“See? I know what you want better than you do. And I can give it to you.” He licked his lips. “You want it?”

“Yes,” I breathed. It was so easy to give in. Drake was right.

Shadow Silence (Whisper Hollow) is a Masterpiece!!  This is the second book in the Whisper Hollow series and it does not disappoint. Kerris is not happy that her friend Peggin is moving to a house close to the lake. She has had  a dream that the Lady of the Lake has claimed her friend when she drowns her in the lake. When Kerris and the rest of the gang help Peggin move, they find Peggin being taken by the Lady. Kerris jumps in and saves her friend. Now, they have a really bug problem on thier hands, because she did save Peggin. The Lady has marked her as her own and will not stop in trying to claim her. Kerris and the rest of the gang now have to find a way to remove the mark and keep Peggin out of the clutches of the Lady. This book offers so much to the series with a mystery that has to be solved about the house Peggin has moved into. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last. I love the book and the characters. On that note, I give SHADOW SILENE 5/5 STARS.

Merry Cowboy Christmas (Lucky Penny Ranch) is the best yet of the LUCKY PENNY RANCH SERIES! Carolyn Brown is a writing genius! This series has been a joy to read. I love the characters of Jud and Fiona, and the secondary character Truman was great. Fiona comes back to town down on her luck after being divorced for a year.  She meets Jud when her vehicle has a blow out. He stops and helps her to get to her Mom’s house. Fiona is now living across the hallway from Jud and that is too close for temptation, and giving in to temptation has never been sweeter. When their neighbor’s house is lost to fire, they offer their home to them. Now Truman and his wife are living with them and he is a Christmas Grinch. Can they perform a Christmas miracle and have him love the holiday? This is a heartwarming book. I love the way that they treat Truman. I loved this book and series, and cannot wait for the next in the series. I give MERRY COWBOY CHRISTMAS 5/5 STARS.
