Phoebe Walden finally has it all. She’s met the love of her
life, and she has a family she can tolerate, who accept her and love her no

her chance at happiness. Not on Phoebe’s watch. However it’s not
just her happiness at stake, but all of theirs if she makes even one
mistake.

Scott Quinn has done the best he could, floating under the radar. Hard
choices have made it difficult for him even to face himself in the mirror.
But things finally looking up. He’s found the perfect woman, who seems
to be into him as much as he’s into her. Yet Scott has secrets. He

Scott

Something wasn’t adding up here. Scott Quinn frowned at the data
scrolling across his computer screen while comparing it to the file sizes
collated at the bottom. None of this made sense. Not the file sizes nor the
access times or the user accounts identified with random files. To be
honest, it looked like accidental typos or errors, yet there were too many
of them to write off.

Movement out of the corner of his eye drew his attention. He couldn’t
help but smile at the window separating his office from the IS pool. She had
arrived. Scott watched with interest as Phoebe Walden entered the outer
office and took her place at her assigned computer. Only a few months had
passed, but Scott was used to how she captivated all aspects of him.

Those instincts, the ones that had kept him alive, had been explicit in
their need the first time he had laid eyes on her. They wanted her in their
den, where they could keep her forever.

Scott knew it was crazy. But he was used to it after all these years,
coming to terms with behaviors by no means human. The trick was learning to
coexist with them, to incorporate them into his human life. To trust they
would never lead him down the wrong path.

That meant he was planning to ask the delectable Phoebe out on a date. Now
granted, there were issues to overcome. One, he was her direct supervisor,
so there was an element of inequality within their power dynamics. Two,
there was a company policy about fraternizing among coworkers that he was
planning to disregard completely. And three, there were the secrets he
carried with the potential to drive a wedge into any trust they might share
in a relationship.

Scott watched through the glass. His smile widened into a grin. Phoebe had
a little ritual she followed every day shortly after she arrived. It was the
highlight of his morning to watch her perform it. After a thorough cleaning
of everything on her desk, she would carefully unpack her messenger bag. He
was amused while extremely curious about the little knickknacks she placed
on her desk in full view of everyone, but mainly her.

There was a small folding picture frame and a small silver orb he thought
might be a ball bearing, of all things. And last, a small wrench she propped
atop the picture frame. Such a weird combination of items, yet Scott knew
every one of them was significant in representing aspects of Phoebe’s
life. He couldn’t wait to delve deep. To know her. To understand all
the quirks that made her up.

Ping.

Scott frowned at the Instant Messenger alert. He clicked it open with a
sigh. It was from his boss.

M. Foltz: Did you complete the audit?

Of course, he wanted to know if the audit was complete. Scott rolled his
eyes, annoyed Miles wanted an update already when the e-mail dictating the
assignment had only come out this morning. But God save him from people who
were tech illiterate. Or, in Miles’s case, tech dumb.

S. Quinn: The audit is going to take the better part of a week to complete.
If you allow me to bring in help from the IS pool, it can be completed in
three days.

Ping.

M. Foltz: No, the data is sensitive. It requires the highest of clearances.
Complete it as soon as possible. Send regular updates.

He scowled. Not only was this going to be another case where Miles took
credit for all his hard work, but to complete it quickly would require more
than a few nights of burning the midnight oil. His plans for the delectable
Phoebe were being put on hold.

S. Quinn: I’ll do my best. There will be an initial report by the end
of the day.

Fuck. Miles was really starting to get on his nerves. A low growl worked
its way up through his throat while his nails scratched a set of grooves
into the wood of his desk. Maybe it was time to be more proactive at home.
To thin the herd.

“Ahem.”

Scott’s head jerked up to see Phoebe standing in his doorway with her
eyebrows slightly furrowed. How much had she seen? Shit, how much had she
heard? Because that growl was in no way human-sounding.

“I did knock.” Her voice was professional, but her face still
indicated she had witnessed his less than human annoyance.

“Do you need something?” Scott cringed internally. His voice
sounded sharp. Too sharp. Damn Miles.

She smiled with those fire-engine-red lips. They had him shifting
uncomfortably in his chair. “Something’s wrong with my headset.
It’s nothing but static. Do you have another one I can
use?”

He wasn’t surprised. They worked for a multibillion-dollar
conglomerate that provided substandard products for its departments. Scott
got up from his desk to get one out of the supply cabinet. He always made
sure to order the crap items in bulk for this very reason.

“Of course.” He grabbed a box with the right headset in it.
“Here you go. Are you settling in okay?”

Phoebe gave him a genuine smile. “Yes, things have been great. I was
worried I wouldn’t be cut out for this, but so far, so
good.”

Scott blinked and had to yank his more animalistic instincts back. The
attraction was strengthening so much, so it briefly stunned him.
“I’m glad. Don’t hesitate to ask if you do need
something.”

That earned him another smile before she returned to her desk to get to
work. Shaking his head to clear the lust-filled fog she had caused, Scott
returned to his desk. As he got back to work, a portion of his brain was
dwelling on Phoebe and the best way to go about working his way into her
life or her into his.

EXCERPT

Each word, each action I took might disappoint or please my supporters or hinder future opportunities for others who will undoubtedly come after me. There seemed to be both a conscious and unconscious, constant monitoring of everything that I said and did, and how I presented myself by others, and by myself.

The pressure of leading in this season was formidable.

and was devastated if a B showed up on her report card(s). Jen set the bar
high and strove to check all the boxes in what defined a successful life.
Her super achieving nature shaped her career in the corporate world.

After twenty years in corporate, climbing the ladder in financial services
from a bank teller to a Senior Vice President in a Chicago land financial
institution and doing ‘all the right things’, Jen’s health
plummeted. In 2019, her thrusters burnt out, her body stopped functioning,

direction.

Jen’s time of healing that followed was an arduous journey and a
gift. A gift she had to give herself, her husband, children, and her life.
She was forced to acknowledge that lives weren’t perfect. She did not
have to check all life’s success boxes, and she did not have to be
super woman. For the first time, Jen finally understood what she wanted. Jen
knew she wanted to give back to women so they could avoid the traps of
overachieving, perfectionism, and not speaking their truth.

Fate Do Us Part cover

YA, Urban, Romantic Suspense

Date Published: 08-02-2022

To have or not to hold, from this day forth. How our story ends, teeters in
the balance, yet to be told. The door to my darkest secret was unlocked.
Through many struggles I learned that Justin is the key. But if a tragic
death occurs when you’re supposed to say, “I do”, is fate telling
me that we are doomed. After all, isn’t our relationship a forbidden romance
that’s not meant to be? Doubt, despair, and a devastating reality; only God
knows if it will be till fate do us part.

Episode 3. – Perception of Palms

Excerpt

The tremors begin lightly. Nothing concerning at first, but then they
increase more and more by the minute. Justin is sitting next to me, and his
head snaps in my direction. He’s not a fan of flying. “Just
turbulence,” I relay to him. He nods, although the creases on his
forehead linger.

          The plane jerks
violently, causing me and many other people to gasp. After another sharp
jolt, Justin grabs my hand, squeezing it tightly. I must admit, my concern
is growing. I’ve flown less than a handful of times in my life and
have never experienced turbulence this intense.

          The pilot comes on
overhead. “Everyone, please be seated and fasten your seatbelts.
We’ve entered a storm, and we need to fly above it.”

          The flight attendants
stop serving drinks and snacks, returning quickly toward the front to buckle
in.

          One man decides not to
listen. “I gotta take a leak,” he says, continuing to the
restroom.

          The plane takes a
nosedive. This rapid movement startles me. We’re supposed to fly above
the storm—not dive down. The guy who refused to sit regrets his
decision. He’s flung over a seat onto another passenger. The person
he’s on top of makes their unhappiness known, using a few choice
words. Unfortunately, the man can’t move much with the gravity
shift.

          The plane levels out for
a spell, only to yank swiftly downward again. My heart is pounding. Is the
plane struggling through the storm, or it is malfunctioning?

          At this point, I’m
holding onto Justin’s hand as tightly as he’s clinging onto
mine. Flying is supposed to be safe. Planes rarely crash. With the way the
plane is shaking, I’m having a hard time convincing myself with the
statistics.

          Other passengers’
worry begins to show. “What’s happening?” a man
asks.

          “Are we going to
crash?” a lady gasps.

          “Are we going to
die!” another woman shouts.

          “It’s going
to be rough for few minutes while I maneuver through the storm,” the
pilot says overhead, trying to keep everyone calm.

          With the plane on its
chaotic course, his words aren’t reassuring. The plane jerks more
intently, causing several people to scream. The hardhead who didn’t
buckle up is holding onto the person he fell on top of for dear life. I
think they’re too frightened to complain. Mixed emotions echo around
me. Some passengers are swearing, others are freaking out. We’re all
terrified now.

          Justin and I glance at
each other, of one accord. I can understand the meaning in his eyes without
words. No matter the outcome—we’re in this to together. To have
and to hold, through sickness and in health. That’s what we are here
for.

          The plane attempts to
move upward, then it jolts viciously downward like a roller coaster
plummeting over the peak. My stomach shoots to my mouth—suspended in
mid-air.

At this point, I close my
eyes and start to pray silently. I ask for forgiveness of my sins. I beg for
this not to be the end, because my life is only beginning. If it’s the
end—I pray for it to be quick.

          I don’t care what
anyone says—prayer works. The plane rises higher and higher. Finally,
it crests the storm. The turbulence ceases and it’s like we’re
in the calm of the eye. The pilot announces that we’ve cleared the
terrible weather and apologizes for the scare. Everyone cheers—relief
is circulating through the air.

          My chest begins to feel
lighter with each passing breath. I glance out the window in wonder. Where
we are, the sky is filled with fluffy, white clouds. Below us, I see
lightening flashing with grizzly, opaque clouds. It’s eerie watching
the storm from above as it manifests. Thankfully, we’re no longer
inside it.

          Justin finally releases
my hand. “That was a close call.”

          “Yeah, it was
scary. But we always make it through together.”

          “Till death do us
part.”

EXCERPT

Why did I do it?

Why did I have an affair?

Six months ago, if you had asked what the chances were of me ever cheating on Mary Beth, I would have laughed and said, “None.” I would have argued that, while I find women as attractive as the next guy, what I don’t find attractive is the idea of destroying my marriage and ruining my reputation. Anyone who knows me will tell you I am, at heart, a guy who prefers not to take big risks, and other than skydiving without a parachute, there is no bigger risk than cheating on your wife. There are so many things that can go wrong. So many ways your best laid plans can implode. If your own missteps don’t do you in, some random, quirky, impossible-to-anticipate coincidence will blow in like the first wind of winter and expose everything. The smartest, most accomplished men in the world have learned that their brilliant plotting and scheming and playacting produced nothing but a house of cards.

To further mark the absurdity of your question, I would have had you get to know Mary Beth and tell me one thing about her a man—any man—wouldn’t love. Her sparkling intelligence, character, and sense of humor—traits I have cherished since the moment I met her—set her apart. And yes, she is physically attractive. Not movie star beautiful, but girl-next-door pretty, which, to my way of thinking, is the best kind of attractive a woman can be.

And then I would’ve pointed to my faith. I’m a guy who believes in God, who has actually read the Bible, who goes to church, who believes in right and wrong. I realize that might sound lame to you, considering that history is saturated with nefarious acts committed by religious people. Still, my faith has been a primary driver of my thoughts and decisions for virtually all of my thirty-seven years. I would have counted it as a trustworthy defense against the kind of turbo-charged temptation that is required to make a man throw his life away.

And yet, there I was, locked in our guest bathroom, hands on the counter, staring with contempt at my own face in the mirror. It’s tempting to say I didn’t recognize that face, that I had become a stranger to myself. And maybe there was a time early on when that was true. But after three months of lying and sneaking and pretending and stomping underfoot every one of my most cherished values, not to mention my marriage vows, I had come to know myself sickeningly well.

I was not the man I’d always believed I was.
