Memoir

Publisher: Acorn Publishing

Date Published: October 19, 2021

The true story of a son’s battle with addiction and a mother’s struggle with loss.

David is only fifteen years old when he first feels morphine flow through his veins after his foot is crushed in the hydraulics of a Bobcat. From that moment on he chases the feeling for the rest of his life. Alcohol, marijuana, cocaine – he goes through drugs like candy, but it isn’t until he finds heroin that he is satisfied.

Through his personal correspondence and essays, David’s story unfolds as he goes from being an average American kid who loves sports, racing around on his skateboard, and writing stories, to being a heroin addict. His heartbreaking journey deepens as he takes his family with him down the dark and dangerous road of heroin addiction.

In 2014, David loses the battle, leaving his mother, Pat, to cope. Grieving a death from addiction is two-fold. After already losing her son to addiction, Pat has to find a way to grieve his death.

The Last Stop reveals intimate and detailed scenes of living the life of an addict and explores the mistakes and ways for families who love the addict to cope. David’s story gives hope for families immersed in the life-altering aspects of active addiction and empathy for those left behind when recovery stops being a choice.

About the Author

Patricia Sweet

In late 1999, Pat learned that her son, David, who was 25, had become addicted to heroin. Her life was changed forever. For the next fifteen years, David rotated in and out of active addiction, recovery, and relapse. In August of 2013, David was diagnosed with vertebrae osteomyelitis caused by his drug use, and at the age of 39, he lost his battle with addiction.

Wanting to help other moms who are living the nightmare of addiction with a loved one, Pat gathered the emotional courage to compile her son’s story, The Last Stop, with his short stories, poetry, and essays.

Addiction changes the addict and those who love the addict. Pat is a different person today, but she still enjoys a good book, a lively tennis match, the clicking of Mah Jongg tiles, weaving baby blankets, and long walks with her little terrier mix who rescued her two years ago.

EXCERPT

Excerpt 1:

In my world, music brought fun and a little bit of rebellion. During the first semester of my senior year, I started having problems with my voice. When I was growing up, I would always lose my voice in the fall and spring for a few days, and my doctor related it to allergies. The first few times this happened to me as a senior, I didn’t panic; I assumed it was an allergy thing. My voice loss became more persistent. I could be reading out loud in English class at full volume, then my voice would just disappear—not fade, just stop. Singing became a game of chance. Maybe I would be able to hit those first soprano notes or maybe I wouldn’t be able to even hit the tenor line. I didn’t have any pain, just frustration. I went to my regular doctor who sent me to an ear, nose, and throat doctor. After a series of disgusting tests where tubes were stuck up my nose and down my throat, acid reflux was ruled out along with any bronchial or allergy issue. He determined I had polyps or nodules. I was referred to a specialist in a city a few hours away from my home. My initial visit was to establish my routines and to see if any patterns could be detected with my symptoms. Over the next few months, I underwent a variety of tests. My Mama always went with me to these appointments, and my Daddy would come when he could. The first test was again having a tube placed up my nose, down my throat and hooked to a monitor. This had to be left on for twenty-four hours and required me to take on normal activities while it was in place. I had to talk, sing, eat, etc. all the while feeling this tube that felt as thick as a garden hose in my throat. I would sing and gag, eat and choke. My Mama would encourage me a lot and cry a little. We found out that I had developed cysts up and down my vocal cords. The next test was gruesome. I was taken into an examination room and laid out flat. I could not have any anesthesia on my neck because the test was to watch how my vocal cords would react. Nine needles were placed into my throat, one at a time. With each needle, I could feel the metal move around inside my throat, cold and foreign. As each needle was added, I was asked to read a passage out loud or sing a few lines from a song. These needles were about ten inches long because they had to be able to go through the layers of the throat to reach the vocal cords while being manipulated by the nurse or doctor externally. The process of this test was brutal. The pain is one I still am not sure how to properly describe. After this, my neck was bruised and swollen, but the next day, I was back at school. After several less-exciting procedures and countless more days of having no voice, it was decided that I would have a bilateral medialization—translation: my throat would be cut open for the doctor to see my vocal cords with his own eyes. Fun fact, I would be awake for this and would be without any anesthesia again, just a topical cream for my neck where the incision would be made. When I arrived for this appointment, I was very scared. However, God has blessed me with  a weird sense of humor, so I had jokes at the ready for my doctor. As we entered the operating room, he allowed me to choose what music we would listen to during the procedure; this was also to encourage me to sing during the procedure. I chose Broadway hits and off we went! My doctor had an enormous ego, but he was very kind and funny. During the procedure, he kept me giggling. I can remember the feel of the chilly knife that cut the incision in my throat. I can remember the weight of the tools used to move the parts of my throat out of the way. I remember seeing and feeling the clips that would hold my throat open. I remember the constant feeling of choking throughout the surgery. I remember singing “All I Ask of You” from Phantom of the Opera while the doctor poked, pulled, and searched for an answer.

Chapter 1: How to Go After What You Want

When something does not cause us noticeable harm, we believe it is okay to continue doing it. For this reason, poor habits, routines, and chronic stress go seemingly unnoticed until we are facing more severe concerns regarding our health and wellbeing.

The danger of a poor routine is that you do not notice it. For example, doing the dishes after dinner: if you are not in the habit of doing them, they will pile up until the next morning. The next morning, you may not have time or may have other plans about how to spend your morning so the dishes pile up again until dinner. You then end up making dinner with limited dishes or you have to take time to wash a pan just to dirty it again. Not initially doing the dishes did not cause you any harm but now it will probably cause considerable frustration.

A routine is a series of actions that you usually perform, often starting around the same time every day. It is a set of activities that have become your norm. In society we can usually pinpoint what has become a norm and there are a lot of cases where societal norms influence people’s lives negatively. It is the same with our personal, daily norms; they have the power to help or hinder our growth as a person.

You stress about following a routine and there are steps that you can take to ensure that designing a routine does not add to your list of worries. Similarly as you form a habit, forming a routine takes time, patience, and practice to become the norm of your life. You should have routines that you are proud of for almost every aspect of your life such as waking up, going to bed, starting your workday, spending time with family, and more. Chances are, if you brush your teeth, wash your face, and change into pajamas, you already have a bedtime routine but there are aspects of that routine that you can improve. The same can be said with every other action you take throughout your day.

Lady of the Play Blitz

Lady of the Play cover

Historical Fiction

Published: October 2021

Publisher: Wings ePress

Lady of the Play is written in parallel historical and contemporary stories, with focus on the life of Elizabeth Trentham. The contemporary story begins with the finding of an original page from A Midsummer Night’s Dream hidden in the cover of an ancient Book of Common Prayer owned by an elderly woman, Sudie McFadden. She contacts a history teacher, Cynthia Parsons, to help her prove her ancestor was the true playwright. Cynthia, with the help of a librarian friend, and an attorney, conduct extensive research to prove Elizabeth Trentham was the true playwright and poet. There is a smooth transition from the modern chapters to the historical.

The secret life of Elizabeth Trentham reveals her innate genius and how she obtained the necessary qualifications to be Shakespeare beginning with her childhood, the ten years she spent as a maid of honor in Queen Elizabeth I court, her collaboration with Edward de Vere, the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford, and their subsequent marriage. Included is why they hired Wm Shaksper first as their broker and why they ultimately allowed him to take credit for the plays. Edward dies in 1604 and Elizabeth continues with the deception until her death in 1612, the same year “Shakespeare” retires. In her will, she leave money for her “dumb” man to assure Shaksper’s silence. Included is her relationship with John Overall, one of the King James Bible translators. Clues of Ely and Edward’s collaboration are left behind in Psalms 46.

Cynthia faces intrigue, danger, and romance along the way as others try to steal historical documents, thereby thwarting her efforts to reveal the truth.

Even though Lady of the Play depicts the fictional life of Elizabeth Trentham, events are based on the actual historical timeline and events. Lady of the Play will appeal to the general population whether a fan of Shakespeare or not.

About the Author

Deena Lindstedt

Following a business career, Deena Lindstedt became a full time student at Marylhurst university in Portland, Oregon graduating with a BA in English Literature and Writing. During her Shakespeare class, she loved the plays and sonnets, and was intrigued with the authorship question. She was certain a woman must have had a hand in writing the plays since so many of the roles had strong female characters. She learned the leading candidate of authorship was Edward de Vere, the Seventeen Earl of Oxford, but he died in 1604, whereas new plays were written and produced for eight more years. However, his second wife, Elizabeth Trentham, didn’t die until 1612, the same year Shakespeare retired. Believing this had to be more than a coincidence, she decided to do her own independent research into Elizabeth’s life, thus became the inspiration for her novel, Lady of the Play.

Deena is a widow living in Tigard, Oregon. She has three sons and nine grandchildren. Her other literary honors include her first book, Deception Cove, a romantic suspense novel, third place winner for a poem: Two Ladies of Chedigny for Willamette Writers, Portland. Finalist for a short story, Simply to Fly for NW Writers Association contest in Seattle. She also delivered her paper, Shakespeare, Perhaps a Woman, at the 2011 Shakespeare Authorship Symposium at Concordia University in Portland.
