Sweet Contemporary Romance

Date Published: October 18, 2019

Publisher: Pig River Press

What do you do when you meet the guy of your dreams? Set him up with your sister, of course.

Kari doesn’t have time for love when she’s opening her new cat café. She’s busy hiring employees, fighting with the health inspector – oh, and welcoming 16 shelter cats. She’s doing this for the cats, the community, and her family. The café will give her sister, Marley, a job worthy of her baking skills.

Then a tattooed military vet wanders in claiming he’s a master baker. Surely Marley will fall for a guy this sweet, this sexy, this tasty.

Colin has other ideas. It’s Kari who makes him want to turn up the heat. But he’s spent the last two years recovering from physical and psychological wounds. Is he really ready for a relationship? He’s not even sure he should commit to Samson, the sweet Siamese cat who steals his heart.

The Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series features the workers and customers at a small-town cat café, and the adorable cats and kittens looking for their forever homes. Each book is a complete story with a happy ending for one couple. These sweet romances will leave you with the warm, cozy feeling of cuddling a purring cat.

Coffee and Crushes at the Cat Café cat on table

Excerpt From Chapter 1

Kari studied the muscular, tattooed man with the shaved head. Yummy. Not her type, but still, she could see why some women liked bad boys. “You don’t look like a barista.” Whoops, had she said that out loud?

One corner of his mouth twitched. “You don’t look like a business owner.”

Fair enough. Growing her hair out had not, as she’d hoped, helped her look older than her 24 years, and no matter how tall she stood, she couldn’t reach above five feet two inches. All right, technically five feet one and a half inches.

She smiled. “I guess we’re even.”

He glanced around the empty room. Kari followed his gaze. Was he wondering if they would actually get the cat café open in a few weeks? At the moment, they had no furniture, no decor, and no cats. This man had wandered in through the doors that were propped open to let the paint fumes escape. He wasn’t the first person to take interest in the Help Wanted sign in the window, but he was one of the few men, and the oldest. She guessed his age at early thirties, though possibly hard living had added a few years.

His presence made the large room feels smaller. Kari took refuge in professionalism. After all, however she might look, she was in fact a business owner now. “Do you have a resume?”

He turned back to her and his piercing gaze almost knocked her back a step.

I’m going to be upfront with you,” he said.

She swallowed. “I’d appreciate that.”

My resume doesn’t reflect my current interests. I did four years in the Army. Then I signed on with a private security firm in the Mid East. Did that for four years before I was injured last year. Almost two years ago now, I guess.”

Kari did some math in her head, partly to distract herself from his golden-brown eyes. Assume he’d entered the military right out of high school. That made four years plus four plus two. That would make him younger than she’d thought, less than thirty. Eight years in the Middle East would also explain his tough, weathered look.

I spent the time since then focused on healing. Physical therapy, counseling.” His eyes narrowed slightly, as if ready to judge her response.

That’s good.” It would be rude to ask about his injuries, not to mention against labor laws if this was going to be a job interview. “I hope you’re …” It was probably too much to expect better from a recovery that took over a year of physical therapy and counseling. “… improved.”

He nodded, and his shoulders dropped half an inch. She hadn’t realized until then that he might be nervous about this conversation as well.

Kari smiled warmly. “So now you think making coffee sounds good? Or is it the cats that appeal to you?”

He returned her smile, and her knees went weak. He was not her type. She liked intellectual, career-focused men. She had never understood women who raved over a man in uniform. Not that he was in uniform now. She glanced down at his faded jeans and tried not to let her gaze linger on the snug black T-shirt as she looked up again. Now he looked like he should be jumping on a motorcycle without a helmet, not looking for work in a café that featured adoptable cats. Soldier or biker, he wasn’t her type – but she could see the appeal.

A clatter came from the kitchen, where her sister was organizing the supplies. On the other hand, this man might be Marley’s type. After all, Marley had gotten pregnant at eighteen from a tattooed soldier on leave. She’d hardly dated since, but if her ex hadn’t turned her off of the type permanently, she might find this one appealing. But was he a nice guy or a jerk?

Both, actually.”

It took Kari a moment to realize he was responding to her question about coffee or cats.

Explore the little-known truth about what it really means to love your
neighbor as yourself.

Loving your neighbor as yourself is an act of the will, not something you
feel. At least that’s what most Christians believe. But is that what the
Bible actually teaches? In Love Is an Emotion R. L. Lewis invites you to
take an honest look at the scriptures and determine the answer to this
question for yourself. As you reason your way through these pages, you’ll
discover:

●      How the common view of “Christian” love
measures up to the test of logic.

●      How the subjective nature of emotion
relates to the objective truth of God’s Word

●      How a revised definition of love can impact
our understanding of the gospel of grace.

If you’re eager to explore the little-known truth about what it really
means to love your neighbor as yourself, this book is for you.

Love is an Emotion standing book

Excerpt
Whenever we experience an emotion, we genuinely feel it. Therefore, every time the Lord commands us to love, that love is something
we are expected to actually feel—even when he commands us to love our enemies (see Matt. 5:44; Luke 6:27,
35). In other words, emotion is the obligation. To fulfill
that obligation without that emotion is to fail at fulfilling
that obligation altogether.
Obviously, no human being can simply conjure up
a genuine emotion for someone else on command. This
reality often serves as the primary reason to reject that
love is an emotion. Unfortunately, this conclusion falsely
assumes that the only way a person can fulfill a command
to feel something is by conjuring up that emotion out of
thin air. Yet even though God desires for us to feel the
love he commands, he does not expect us to do so by
willing such love into existence. The command isn’t to
fabricate love; the command is simply to love—a duty
made feasible only through his Spirit (see Gal. 5:22).

Excerpt

Ready?” asked my business partner, Rhonda DelMonte Grayson, on this early April morning on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

I stopped typing on the computer and turned to her with a grin. “As ready as I ever will be.”

Wearing a yellow caftan that went with her hair, Rhonda waved me up and out of my chair with a grin that lit her face and had her dark eyes sparkling. “Then let’s get this show on the road! It’s not every day a vice president visits The Beach House Hotel.”

I rose and looped my arm through Rhonda’s, and we headed out to the front lobby to greet the latest VIP to come to our upscale hotel.

As we stepped outside to wait for our guest, the spring day greeted us with a kiss of sunny warmth. A soft breeze bobbed the colorful blossoms on the hibiscus bushes that lined the front of the hotel, softening the edges of the pink-stucco, two-story building that stood like royalty at the water’s sandy edge.

Seems like old times, huh?” said Rhonda, grinning at me as we approached the entrance.

I’ll say.” Five years ago, when we’d first opened the hotel, Rhonda and I had greeted our guests like this at the front steps of the hotel, welcoming them personally as much as possible. Hospitality, discretion, and service were the three things we still relied upon to maintain the hotel’s fine reputation. A warm welcome to the property was a must.

I studied her. When I’d first met Rhonda, I’d thought the large, colorful, bossy woman, who said exactly what was on her mind and had no sense of private space, was completely overwhelming. I’d thought I’d never make it through my first visit to her seaside estate—a visit made to please my daughter, Liz, who roomed at college with Rhonda’s daughter, Angela.

Now, even though my strict upbringing with my grandmother in Boston sometimes made me shudder at what came out of Rhonda’s mouth, I loved her like the sister I never had. And I’d learned her heart was as big as her irrepressible spirit.

Rhonda nudged me. “Here she comes!”

I ran a hand through my shoulder-length dark hair, flicked a speck of dust off my bright-blue suit jacket that matched my eyes, and drew a deep breath.

We headed down the front stairs of the hotel as a black limousine followed a large, black SUV through the gates of the hotel and drew up to the front circle.

As soon as the limousine came to a stop, three different people, two men and a woman, Secret Service agents, I presumed, jumped out of the SUV and assessed their surroundings before the woman went over to the limousine and stood outside the back door. One of the men faced out to the road while the other climbed the stairs to the hotel and stood guard there. Then a somber-looking man stepped out of the front of the limo and stood a moment, scanning the area. Satisfied, he stood by as the female agent outside the limo opened the back door, and Vice President Amelia Swanson prepared to climb out of the car.

A tall, striking woman in her late 40s with chestnut brown hair and blue eyes noted for missing nothing, Amelia Swanson stepped out of the limousine and smiled as she walked forward to meet us.

Welcome to The Beach House Hotel, Madame Vice President,” I said, holding out my hand. “I’m Ann Sanders, one of the hotel’s owners.”

Strong fingers gripped my hand. “Very glad to meet you and to be here.” She turned to Rhonda. “And you must be Ms. Grayson.”

Yes. We’re honored to have you stay with us,” said Rhonda, looking as if she didn’t know whether to curtsey or not.

Let’s go inside where we can talk privately,” Amelia said.

Please, come in.” I took her elbow and led her up the steps. The security agent who’d stood by the door headed indoors while another followed at our heels.

Behind me, I noticed the female guard pacing outside the limousine and wondered who or what she was protecting.

We entered the hotel.

Come this way,” said Rhonda.

She led us to the small, private dining room we used for confidential gatherings. Sound-proofed, it had housed many private discussions that never left the room.

The vice president waited for one of the agents to finish his visual sweep of the interior, and then she motioned both men to stay back before closing the door, leaving the three of us alone in the room.

Would you like a seat?” I asked, a little confused by all that was happening.

No, thank you,” she said, smiling. “I’ve been sitting for a while and need to stretch my legs.” She studied Rhonda and turned to me. “What I’m about to tell you can go no further. Understand?”

Rhonda and I glanced at each other and spoke together. “Yes. We do.”

I won’t be staying here but will instead be secretly traveling to Central America to try and rescue a woman from a revolutionary group that’s been holding her prisoner. I made the reservation here at the hotel because you’re known for being discreet. Tina Marks, that fabulous actress, credits the two of you with saving her life. So, if newspaper reporters ask about my staying here, it won’t seem out of the ordinary for you to decline to give out any information. A woman running from domestic abuse will be using my reservation in my place.”

I see …” I began, but she held up her hand to stop me.

This woman is my sister and the wife of the president’s brother.”

Love story with hard edges

From the depths of tragedy it might well be that anything is possible. ‘Words on Paper’ is moving story based on a real life tragedy that divided strangers even further apart. However, for them, aside from all the pain, is a hope that life still has potential, and the reminder that in life sometimes two minuses make a plus. Emma and Will have nothing in common other than a mutual tragedy and a pain they share from a different perspective. All things are achievable but the fates are fickle and their lives are on hold as they travel the rocky road that could lead from tragedy to contentment.

Words on Paper phone

EXCERPT

By five o’clock, Will’s father was tucked up in bed, and Aunt Susan had gone for a lie-down, so Will rang Ben to update him on the police letter.

“That is great news buddy,” Ben responded, “you must be mightily relieved.”

“Yes, mightily. Have you gone all theatrical on me? Mightily?” Will asked.

“Ha. Kar and me are still pumped up. We’ve been working away at some ideas ever since you left. Anyway, enough about us and our success. I can still find time to talk to you and the easing of your problems.”

“Oh, it’s still a problem. A letter from the police changes things, but the big picture for my father is the same; there are some problems that are not going to go away.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound flippant, Will. It sounds like a victory for you and your dad, albeit a small one. People other than your family, who have had an independent take on things, have come down on your side. Work with the positives mate, you’ve had enough negativity to last you a lifetime.”

“Slight case of exaggeration there, Ben – but that’s what you theatrical types are like.”

“So what now?” Ben asked.

“I’ve arranged to meet her daughter.”

“Emma,” Ben confirmed.

“I didn’t know you knew her name.”

“Duh! You have mentioned it once or twice. Or maybe ten times…a lot, in fact.”

“Oh, have I? I wanted to see how she felt about the letter and let her know that doesn’t change how we as a family feel about things.” There was no response from Ben. “Hello, are you still there?”

“Yes. I’m trying to decide whether that’s a good thing or not.”

“I’m meeting her in twenty minutes,” Will declared.

Ben adjusted quickly. “Oh, in that case, it’s a good thing then, a very good thing, and remember all those maths lessons Will, because sometimes, just sometimes, two minuses can make a plus.””

“I’d better go.”

“Best of luck, buddy. Call me later.”

***

The Feathers was surprisingly quiet, which was unusual as it was a pub that always seemed to have a buzz about it. Will felt quite unsettled with the stillness. He could hear other people’s conversations, and he most certainly didn’t want people to eavesdrop on Emma and him talking.

When she had not turned up by seven-fifteen, rather than leave the pub, he called her.

She answered instantly. “Two minutes. I got stuck in traffic.”

She had obviously recognised his number, making him more nervous than ever. He swivelled around in his chair to face the main entrance.

“Sorry, I’m late. I didn’t mean to be.” Emma had come up on his blind side, catching him unawares.

Her appearance surprised him; she was dressed in a smart navy blue business suit, with hair pulled into a tight bun on the top of her head. She looked very business-like and stunningly attractive.

“Can I get you a drink?” Will stood up and asked.

“Just tonic water, please… I don’t touch alcohol during the week.”

If Will had been able to hide his beer bottle, he would have but walked over to the bar to conceal his reaction. This was not a date he told himself – this was nothing more than a business meeting, a family business meeting.

“Here we are.” He placed her drink on the table.

“Thank you. You wanted to talk,” she stated.

“Give me a moment. Okay.” He cleared his throat before continuing,” Have you received the letter?”

“Another letter from you?” Emma asked.

“No, no, from the police authority.”

Emma frowned. “No.”

“I wasn’t sure how I wanted you to answer that question. Now you have, I wish you’d answered yes.”

“Go on.”

“Do you mind if I try and get out all I want to say in one go before you comment?”

She looked dubious but nodded in agreement.

“The police have investigated the accident and decided not to prosecute Dad. It has taken them a longer time than we all thought because it was quite a thorough investigation. They concluded that the council bore some of the responsibility because the lighting in the area was totally inadequate and short of the specification approved for the site. For my father and for all our family, it is obviously a big relief, but I’m worried, massively worried, that you think that we might be celebrating, that we would no longer be consumed by the tragedy that has fallen on you and your family. All of us would give anything to be able to turn the clock back, in all truthfulness as much for ourselves as for you. I wish there was something I could do to find a positive out of all this.” Not once had Emma stopped looking directly into his eyes.

Will pressed on with the real purpose of their meeting. “I would like to see your mother. I would like to meet her and say sorry.” He waited.

“I can’t answer that yet. It’s a lot to take in.” She stood up abruptly. “I’ll call you sometime over the weekend.” With that, she was gone.

Will stayed in his seat for the rest of the night. People came and went from the pub, and after a while, he replaced his beer with lemonade which was still only half consumed two hours later.

“Anyone else using this table?”

He looked up to see a group of five students staring at him.

“No. I was just going, feel free.”

He got up and walked back to his car and sat there for a while before he was disturbed by the noise of a text coming in. He was not sure if he wanted it to be from Emma or not. He opened the message.

Unknown: Did it. No good. Thanks. Do not call. Lydia xx

Was that something else that he had screwed up? Maybe he would see if Aunt Susan could spare some more sleeping pills.

***

Emma was lost in thought as she drove home and dialled her best friend’s number as soon as she sat down.

“Lucy.” Her friend’s reply was muffled, and she had obviously been sleeping.

“Hi. Em here. Is it too late?”

“It’s not ten yet – don’t be so daft. What’s up?” Lucy sounded more alert.

“I met Will Edwards tonight. The police have decided not to prosecute his dad.”

“Oh, I bet he’s chuffed to bits then,” Lucy guessed.

“I don’t think so…no, I’m fairly certain he’s not…he wants to visit Mum.”

“Crikey. Why would he want to do that?”

“I don’t think it’s as much as he wants to. I think it’s more a need. A basic animal type of reaction.”

“Do you want to come around and talk about it?”

“No thanks, Lucy. I’m going to sleep on it. It was just that sometimes it helps to say the words out loud.”

“Or write them down on paper.”

“Yes, that as well,” Emma agreed.

***

Will recognised the phone number instantly but did not let on. “William Edwards.”

“Hi – it’s Emma here.”

“Hi.” Will felt slightly breathless.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said.”

“Yes?”

“I think we should talk this through, but not make such a big thing about it, rather than meet at a pub; maybe we could have a meal, take our time…so we don’t have to rush what we say. If I hadn’t left straight away yesterday, I think I might have said things I would have regretted. I don’t want to do that. There’s enough hurt in the air as it is anyway.”

“That sounds like a perfect idea.”

“Do you know Daniels Bistro about five miles out of town, on the A38?”

“I know of it, never been, but I’ve heard it’s good.”

“It’s usually booked a couple of weeks in advance, but I’ve a friend who is manager there, and she can fit us in tomorrow.”

“On a Thursday, that’s good.” It was anything but good; he had an important monthly meeting that could go on until eight.

“What time would suit you?” she asked.

“The later, the better if I’m honest.”

“I hope you’re always honest.”

Is she flirting with me?

Emma continued, “That would suit Lucy – she’s got a big office party booked for an early evening bash. Shall I say eight-thirty?”

“I will look forward to it.”

The phone line went dead. It was very possible she was not flirting. In fact, it was impossible to imagine that she had been flirting, Will felt embarrassed with himself. What an utterly ridiculous idea.
