Blood Land, the award-winning, must-read first book in series!

Crime’s an ugly constant in the big cities. L.A. Chicago. New York. But when a savage murder brutalizes a small town and neighbor turns on neighbor, a tough-as-nails cop is essential to restoring order. Blood Land is a gritty, emotional saga set in the contemporary Wyoming badlands with both greed and vengeance at its core.

When billions of dollars in 21st century natural gas rights hang in the balance, and the town’s top law officer’s wife is slain by her own brother, a reluctant hero is forced to battle his own demons and ultimately choose between justice, revenge, and duty.

An award-winning, page-turner, in the tradition of Dennis Lehane, Tony Hillerman and James Lee Burke, Guthrie’s sparse, haunting storytelling compliments his talent for creating richly-drawn, unflinching law officers with human frailties, a code of honor, and a profound sense of justice.

Money Land

A James Pruett Mystery, Book 2

Money Land, sequel to the award-winning Mystery/Thriller series, Blood Land, the book that introduced the popular Sheriff James Pruett.

In this exciting second book, big crime has literally come crashing down on the small town of Wind River, Wyoming. When a small plane bound for the Canadian border carrying money for the Sustantivo Cartel smashes into the remote, glacial Wind River Mountains, the event brings a heartless evil presence to one of the more unknown places on earth.

The tail of the plane is eventually discovered, empty. No drugs. No money. Shortly afterward, people involved in the events begin dying in unconvential, brutal ways. Clearly a new criminal element has come to town. Sheriff James Pruett is not the kind of lawman to back down when his town is in the crossfire, and he will do anything to save the neighbors and friends under his protection, the land of Wind River and the surrounding winderness itself, and most importantly, his family.

Anything.

Again, in the sparse, gritty, poetic styling of James Lee Burke, Tony Hillerman, Dennis Lehane, and John D. MacDonald, R.S. Guthrie brings you his revered hero, a good man ready to battle the merciless cartel, as well as the local branch of a federal agency that has betrayed the patriotic honor of its own sworn duties.

Honor Land

A James Pruett Mystery, Book 3

Honor Land, the third book in the outstandingly-reviewed series!

In this third James Pruett Mystery, the hero is faced with the biggest challenge of his life: saving the life of an even larger hero. Honor Land is a gritty, emotional story of patriotism, multiple murders, a hero Delta Force veteran, Kyle Yoder, who doesn’t understand himself any longer, much less whether or not he is capable of the brutal crimes for which he is charged.

James Pruett and his team will have to uncover the answers if they are to keep Yoder from a guilty verdict and a mandatory execution by lethal injection.

In the tradition of Dennis Lehane, Tony Hillerman and James Lee Burke, Guthrie’s sparse, haunting storytelling compliments his talent for creating richly-drawn, unflinching law officers with human frailties, a code of honor, and a profound sense of justice.

Western Romance

Date Published: November 20, 2020

Evangeline Goes West cover

Bored out of her mind with the burbs and her abusive husband, former-farmgirl Eva packs up her paints and heads for the wilds of Wyoming. Hiding out at her friend’s guest ranch, she’s determined to find her old self that she lost somewhere along the way. What she doesn’t count on finding is Chase McCoy, a handsome young cowboy whose cavalier smile works like a balm for her weary soul. But Eva has resolved she is not looking for a man again. Especially not a cocky cowpoke who is nearly a decade her junior—even if he is six-feet-plus of work-honed muscle and his Wranglers fit like a gift to women everywhere.

However, Chase is more than he seems. A tragic past made him a man before his time, and determined to prove he’s exactly what she’s been missing in her life, he sets his Stetson in her direction. If life has taught him anything, it’s that you have to work hard for what you want and fight for a woman worth keeping. Maybe Eva is stubborn as a Missouri mule, but he knows he’s up to the task of changing her mind.

Just when Eva thinks she’s outrun her demons, she finds a little something in her Jeep that contains big secrets. It seems her ex isn’t ready to let her go, and he’s willing to do anything to keep her quiet. Lie, cheat, steal—and possibly even kill. Maybe Evangeline’s never fought back before, but her newfound family is more than willing, and Jared Wassler just might find he messed with the wrong bull.

***Buckleup, Buttercup. This here’s an irreverent 18+ adult contemporary western romance. It contains copious amounts of swearing, violence, sex, feminism, and other volatile subjects. If that ain’t your cup o’ tea put this book right back down.

In Zero-Day Rising, the third book of the BetterWorld trilogy, Kiyoko is
tired of hiding and grieving, and has decided to strike back. In the first
volume of the critically acclaimed BetterWorld cyberpunk trilogy, Kiyoko’s
older sister Waylee and their hacktivist friends exposed a conspiracy
between MediaCorp and U.S. President Rand to control the flow of information
and run the world on behalf of a cabal of billionaires. In volume two,
Waylee faced life imprisonment, while Kiyoko and her friends were hunted by
a team of ruthless mercenaries. In Zero-Day Rising, Kiyoko resolves to free
her sister and bring down President Rand and MediaCorp. However, MediaCorp
unleashes its ultimate plan: direct mind control with cerebral implants. Can
Kiyoko and Waylee’s team stop them? Can they penetrate MediaCorp’s networks
and end the company’s grip over humanity? All while eluding the biggest
manhunt in history, in a country where everyone and everything is under
surveillance?

EXCERPT

The Fin and Tonic, a 42-foot fishing boat they’d chartered with cryptocurrency, bounced into the furious black sky, then smashed down again with a crash. Kiyoko gripped the arms of her tightened-down swivel chair, and fought not to throw up or scream in terror. Battered by wind and rain, the clear tarp around the bridge fluttered violently, threatening to rip from its fasteners and fly away.

“Quite da squall, ain’t it,” the captain said, gripping the steering wheel from the center chair, struggling to keep the boat angled against the white-capped waves. If they swung parallel to the waves, he’d explained, they could capsize, and if they drove straight into them, they might bury the bow.

The captain was old, with leathery dark skin and thinning gray curls beneath a Miami Dolphins / Super Bowl Champions cap. “Don’t normally go out in weather like this,” he said, “’specially after dark.”

That was Pel’s idea, so no one would see them. “We have faith in you,” Kiyoko told the captain. According to his Comnet site, he’d been piloting boats for decades.

Gripping the other passenger chair on the bridge deck, Nicolas stared into his augmented reality glasses, verifying their course and monitoring the VHF radio for Coast Guard patrols. Pel had lessened that worry by calling in a fake tip about drug smuggling into Biscayne Bay, well to the south.

Pel, Charles, and Alzira were below in the cabin, along with their bags of gear. The boat didn’t have a satcom so there wasn’t much they could do until they reached the mainland.

Another rise. Kiyoko’s muscles tensed in anticipation. The boat plunged down, leaving her stomach behind.

They smacked bottom with a shudder. Water crashed over the bow and splashed against the tarp. Despite the scopo patch behind her left ear, she almost retched.

Please O Mazu, O Poseidon, grant us safe passage. Kiyoko had given up on the gods after what happened in São Paulo, but this was a good time for a truce.

The captain tacked to stay on course. “’Taint the first time someone paid me to sneak across the water,” he said. “But first time I been dumb enough to do it in a storm.”

And they were only an hour out of port. It would have been a four-hour trip in calm seas, the captain had said. But in this weather? They’d be lucky to arrive at all.

No lights on the horizon or in the air. Not that Kiyoko could see far through the storm. The radar display on the console screen showed some white triangles on the perimeter, embedded in wide bands of green, yellow, and red.

Kiyoko pointed at the screen. “What are those triangles?” she asked. They had small alphanumeric codes to the side.

“Don’t touch nothin’,” the captain growled. “Freighters, tankers, not to worry,” he added.

Another rise and fall. A loud thump came from the cabin below. What was that?

Someone shouted, the voice carrying above the dueling wind and engines. Sounded like Charles, cursing.

Kiyoko turned to Nicolas. “What is it? What happened?”

Nicolas spoke quietly into his wraparound mic, then turned toward her. “Charles wants to know why there aren’t any seatbelts.”

“Is he okay?”

Nicolas shrugged. “Probably. He’d be screaming if he broke something.”

The waves diminished as they neared the Florida coast, although the rain didn’t let up.

“Westerly winds workin’ in our favor now,” the captain said.

Kiyoko checked her comlink. They were two hours behind schedule. “Can we go faster then?”

“Yeah.” The captain pushed the dual throttle forward. They picked up speed.

It was hard to see much through the sheets of rain, but a glow appeared along the horizon, brightest to the south. Ahead, a light swept across the sky every ten seconds or so.

“Is that a lighthouse?” Kiyoko asked.

“Yep,” the captain said. “That’s the Jupiter Lighthouse. That’s where we headed. I got a GPS navigator but I like t’ see where I goin’.”

Kiyoko didn’t see any other boats, nor anything on the radar display. No Comnet signal, but they were still miles from the coast, with heavy rain in between. She hoped M-pat was still waiting for them and hadn’t given up, or been accosted by police.

The waves picked up as they approached the inlet, rocking the boat up and down, left and right.

Sweat dripped down the captain’s cheeks as he stared ahead, gripping the wheel. “Hate these shoals.”

They roared between two rock jetties, then the waves died. The captain slowed the boat and it seemed to sag with relief.

“Welcome to the United States,” Kiyoko told Nicolas in quiet Portuguese.

Excerpt

I have a proposition for you, Mr. Tagget.”

His neatly trimmed eyebrows twitched. “Excellent!”

Ack, that smug smile. The man was too handsome for his own good, and he knew it. Vi didn’t know whether she’d rather kiss that mouth or punch it.

The grainy magazine photograph she’s scrounged up hadn’t done him justice. It made him look older, more serious. It didn’t show the single stray lock of hair curling across his forehead or the dimples at the corners of his mouth, too prominent to hide beneath his short goatee. It failed entirely to capture that wicked glint in his eye. He wasn’t the cold, merciless industrialist she’d imagined. His blood ran hot.

She’d also imagined him to be quite a bit taller. Standing here, staring at him, they looked exactly the same height.

You and I are going to enter a partnership, Mr. Tagget.”

Oh, are we?” He managed to both leer and sound suspicious.

You have heard, I assume, of the rash of art thefts over the past few months?”

That fool who styles himself ‘l’Exploiteur’? Is he the mastermind he claims, or just a braggart?”

I’m told he has stolen near to fifty works of art, mainly from private collections and small galleries. His thefts grow bigger and bolder, and he has begun to taunt major galleries and museums with the promise of the greatest heists ever seen.”

Well, that does sound dire, though I fail to see how it is of relevance to myself.” His dark brows quirked again. “Unless you are this Exploiter? If so, then I absolutely agree to join you on your next heist. What are we stealing?”

No!” Vi put both hands on her hips. “Oh, for heaven’s sake, I’m not an art thief.”

More’s the pity. I could use an interesting challenge.”

I’m an artist,” Violet huffed. “I create, I don’t destroy. I want my work on display, where it can be enjoyed by all.”

Tagget stroked his beard. “Hmm. What, then, is your concern with this pilferer of cultural treasures?”

I’m trying to learn his identity and put a stop to his crimes.”

How noble,” he chuckled. “Standing up for the dead masters who can no longer defend their works?”

Obnoxious ass. She really was going to punch him right in his pretty mouth, then storm out and find herself a different assistant.

Violet clenched her fingers. Rich businessmen with questionable ethics and worldwide communications networks couldn’t be found loitering on any street corner. She was lucky to even have the opportunity to speak with him.

I was asked to help in this case because of my own connections in the art world,” she explained, trying not to glower.

He frowned at her, causing a small furrow in his brow. “Your connections? What sort of connections would a lady artist have that would be of any use in this situation? Unless…” The frown twisted into a smile. “You’re involved in illicit dealings yourself, naturally. A forger, perhaps?” He twitched. “Well, I’ll be damned. Are you Vérité? But of course you are. ‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty.’ Though you look rather youthful for someone who they say has been working for fifty years and faked three hundred paintings.”

Ten years, twenty-seven forgeries. Many haven’t been discovered, and many works have been incorrectly attributed to me.”

With her police file as thick as a Bible, Violet didn’t see any need to hide her deeds, and she was proud of the work she had done. Tagget looked momentarily surprised by her admission, then his smile returned.

Fascinating. You made a deal with the authorities, I presume? But you need assistance. Why me?”

I heard you were kicked out of the United States for spying.”

Tagget’s green eyes twinkled. “Now, my lovely blossom, you mustn’t believe every rumor you hear. I bent some laws, perhaps, but didn’t precisely break them. People did take exception, however, so I thought it best to focus on my European interests until the furor dies down.”

Violet turned up her nose at him. “I don’t care about the details. I care that you’re a teletics expert. Can you or can you not record information over a telephone or telegraph line?”

I can. Most of it is irrelevant chatter. Sifting through is usually a waste of time.”

And you’re an inventor?” she pressed on. “You can build things, and understand how machines work? You could dismantle them if necessary?”

A smile of a different sort touched his lips. More boyish, maybe even happier. “I could break through that mechanical door behind me with no more than a screwdriver, given enough time.”

Then you’re the man I need.”

He fixed her with a heated stare. “I’m pleased you think so.” The husky timbre of his voice sent a shiver down her spine. “I accept your proposal. When do we begin?”
