Valentine Blitz: Abandoned Hope

Valentine Blitz banner
Angelique Conger discovered the wonders of writing books later in her life. Books, however, have always been important to her. As a little girl in a small town, she was given her own library card at the tender age of five, highly unusual in those days.
Angelique reads a book, or three at once, much of the time. She reads most genres of books and until recently only toyed with writing them. Since beginning, she has spent many hours each day learning the craft of writing and editing.
Many would consider Angelique Conger’s books Christian focused, and they are because they focus on early events in the Bible. She writes of a people’s beliefs in Jehovah. However, though she’s read in much of the Bible and searched for more about these stories, there isn’t much there. Her imagination fills in the missing information, which is most of it.
Angelique lives in Southern Nevada with her husband, turtles, and Lovebird. She enjoys visits with her grandchildren — and their parents.

Yosuf held up a hand to help Daphne step down from the high seat.
“Oh, ho. I did not see you, Mistress.” David bowed. “How did you manage that?”
“I sit quietly on the seat until it is time for me to be seen,” Daphne answered. “I was high enough up, you would not see me.”
“It worked. I didn’t see you.” David smiled and offered his arm to escort Daphne into the house.

Olivia had dressed down for the party, but she’d missed the mark. Car race parties were not horse race parties. She stood out like a sore thumb and was well outside her comfort zone.
“What about me?” she asked. “You can’t leave me here alone.” Who knew how long it would take for a cab to come rescue her?
“I’ll stay with you,” Devon said.
“Awesome,” Ginger replied with a big smile. “Thanks!” She turned, disappearing into the mob of bouncing, dancing students, who were making the floor shake along with them.
“But…”
“Looks like it’s just you and me.” Olivia felt the weight of Devon’s arm across her shoulders, the low rumble of his voice setting her chest on fire. She wasn’t sure whether she should be delighted or worried to be left alone with someone as tempting as he was.
“She ditched me.”
“Ah, whatever. The whole night is ours now. We can make it whatever we want. Tabula rasa.”
A Roman wax tablet, a blank slate to write upon…
That sounded tantalizing. And perfectly dangerous.
“I don’t need a babysitter.”
“Nobody said you do.”
“So…you race?” she asked, turning to face him, while shifting out from under his arm.
He nodded. “Do you?”
She shook her head rapidly. Of course not.
“How come?”
She replied with a laugh, unable to come up with an answer that didn’t make her sound stuck up or chicken.
“You like the adrenaline rush?” she asked.
“Nothing has ever made me feel as alive.”
“Nothing?” she teased.
“Come with me sometime,” he said, his eyes on hers. “I’ll teach you.” He was serious.
She couldn’t imagine herself behind the wheel of a race car, but didn’t want to say no and risk shutting him down. She wanted to continue the flirtatious banter.
“I’d rather you teach me how to play pool.” She gave him a teasing glance, letting him know she was imagining his arms wrapped around her body as he helped her line up a shot.
He let out a bark of delighted laughter. “I like your style, Olivia.”
“Want to know a secret?”
He leaned closer, a wicked glint in his eyes. His aftershave was musky, intoxicating, and she inhaled it, waiting a beat before saying, “I already know how to play.”
He grinned, increasing the potent headiness of their flirting game.
“There’s a diner at the end of the block,” he stated.
“And?”
“Want to go for coffee?”
He thought she was drunk and needed to sober up? Ouch.
“It was nice meeting you.” She went to turn away, but Devon cupped her head like he was going to bring her in for a kiss, his steady gaze making her feel seen, special.
Oh.
He didn’t think she was drunk. He was interested in her.
That made her whole body feel as if a bottle of Sprite had been shaken, then let loose inside her.
“Are you going to kiss me?” she asked. “Because I’m going to kiss you.”
Instead of waiting, Olivia lifted herself onto her toes and planted one on him. His lips felt unexpectedly right as he kissed her back. Gentle. Curious. Exploratory… Her arms went around his neck and an awareness filled her. This kiss wasn’t just about her partner. It was about them. Together. An encounter powerful and sweet, full of give and take, kindness and understanding.
Her body warmed, fizzy feelings of delight working their way to her core as the kiss heated in intensity.
Olivia broke free, realizing she was in the middle of a throbbing dance party, kissing a race car driver and acting as if she was free to do whatever she wanted.
She liked it. A lot.
“Wow,” she whispered against his lips. He smiled and oh, it was glorious. As though sunshine shone down on her after a lifetime of rain.
“I think I like you, Mr. Sexy.”

Horror
(with elements of suspense, mystery, and fantasy)

On July 15, 1991, an isolated village in Northern Wisconsin is ground zero for an unprecedented, fiery tragedy. Of the community’s 600 residents, there are only five survivors. Detailed accounts by the victims contradict each other; the only link is a man named Anthony Guntram, but because he is presumed to be dead, this claim can’t be verified. Further investigations reveal a culture enshrouded in mystery. What are the survivors hiding? Only the villagers know the secret of Amber Hollow, a place where sanity is checked at the town line and the parameters of reality become blurred. An unconventional horror story by design, Edgar Swamp delivers an action-driven page-turner that will keep readers guessing until the calamitous ending.

EXCERPT

The call came when they were five blocks from St. Mary’s, blaring from the radio in a raucous hiss of static that made both of them jump. Sadie looked at Jeremy, and the confusion in her eyes would be almost comical if the situation wasn’t so dire. He grabbed the handset on the radio, pressed the button.

“This is Detective Jeremy LeFevre. Please repeat the transmission.”

“There is a ten fifty-six A in progress on the Tower Drive Bridge, I repeat a ten fifty-six A.”

“We’re two miles from that location,” he said calmly, although his nerves suddenly felt as if they were live wires spitting enough electricity to power the entire city. “We’re en route.”

“Ten four,” the dispatcher said, and Sadie flipped a switch on the dash that fired up the siren. She then grabbed the bubble next to her, rolled down her window, and tossed it onto the top of the car where the magnet on the bottom held it firmly in place. For some reason, she always felt like she was in an episode of Starskey and Hutch when she did that.

“You thinking what I’m thinking?” Jeremy asked his partner.

    “What are you thinking?”

“I don’t know, maybe I’m jumping to more conclusions, but somehow I think this is one call we need to take.”

    Turned out, he was right.
