CHAPTER 1
The raven-haired veterinarian stepped into the examining room and watched as a frustrated man tried to gain control of the angry, spitting cat climbing up his arm.
After tightening his grip on the short-haired, gray feline, he looked up at her. She recognized the boyish smile on the handsome man’s face. It was Roddy Eastman, and he was even more attractive now than he had been when they were in high school in Angel Falls. “How can I help you, Mr. Eastman?”
His eyes widened, and he stammered, “Pepper Chan?”
She smiled and said, “Yes, it’s me. Long time no see. How’s your sister? I think about her often.”
“Kris is great.”
“When did you move to Albuquerque?” she said.
“I went to UNM, and after I graduated I stayed.”
“I understand you’ve acquired a new cat?”
“No, I mean, yes, but he acquired me, not the other way around. He showed up on my porch one day and has refused to leave. He thinks it’s okay to come into my house and sleep on my bed.” His eyes twinkled and he grinned. “I’m sorry. I’m babbling like an idiot.”
Pepper was amused at his efforts to control the cat. She hoped he wouldn’t lose a finger as he set the beat-up tom on the stainless-steel table. The animal hissed again, but Roddy held it firmly. She began to examine the cat and then heard a tap on the door.
Pepper turned toward her partner who was speaking from the doorway.
“Sorry, to interrupt, Pepper, but there’s a surgical emergency out here that I’d be more comfortable placing in your hands. I can take over here if you don’t mind?”
“Okay with you, Roddy?” Pepper said.
“Yeah, that’s fine. It was great seeing you again. I’ll tell Kris.”
~ ~ ~
Pepper had rushed out of the room so quickly that Roddy wasn’t sure she’d ever been there, or if she was merely a wishful daytime fantasy.
The doctor who took over for Pepper was a tall, buxom woman with blond hair and brown eyes peering out from glasses. She was a couple of inches shorter than he was, and she spoke with a distinctive Boston accent. She was friendly enough and seemed to take in stride the quick change in plans.
“Looks like this old boy has been around the block a few times, literally,” the vet said. “I’m Doctor Barbara Ashland, and what is this fellow’s name?”
“Devil Cat,” Roddy said giving the animal his best stern fatherly look. Changing the subject, he said, “I noticed Dr. Chan still uses her maiden name for the business. I guess she’s never been married?”
The look Ashland sent him made it clear how out-of-line his question had been.
“Sorry,” he muttered. “I knew her in high school.”
“I see. Well, I’ve been her partner for over a year, all I can tell you is she isn’t married now.” She scratched Devil Cat between the ears. “What’s the story?” Dr. Ashland said.
For a minute, Roddy thought she was talking about Pepper, but then he realized the doctor was asking about the cat. “One day, he showed up on my front porch and wouldn’t go away. So I fed him, and then next thing I knew, every time I opened the door he came inside. Seems to think he belongs there.” Roddy reached out and gave the cat a gentle pat. “To tell you the truth, the dang thing has grown on me.”
Dr. Ashland picked up a clipboard. “He needs shots, a check for worms, and he’ll need to be neutered, of course, but otherwise he looks good. You want to leave him today?”
“Uh, yeah, I guess.” Roddy’s brain was still trying to grasp what the vet had said, and he wanted to grab his own balls and hold on to them. He leaned over and whispered in the cat’s ear, “Sorry, man, I really am. I bet if you’d known this was going to happen, you’d have gone to someone else’s porch.”
~ ~ ~
Roddy rolled down the window on his pickup and threaded the cool breeze through his fingers. Early spring was one of his favorite seasons in Albuquerque, even if Mother Nature was fickle and unpredictable. Today, it was in the high seventies, but tomorrow a front could come pushing in and drop the temperatures into the forties. Most of the snow had melted off Sandia Peak, and the redbud trees were popping their blooms.
He sang along to a country love song on the radio, Roddy thought back to Pepper’s haunting eyes. She had been so gorgeous back when he was fifteen. Time had been good to her. She was still breathtaking. Her Chinese ancestry was evident in her shiny black hair and the shape of her eyes, but not their color. They were a deep, dark, indigo blue.
She had been his first serious crush, although she never gave him a second look. He remembered she had moved after her senior year, and he had thought about her now and again over the years. His older sister Kris was in the same grade as Pepper. Maybe she would know something more about her.
His truck bumped over the gravel road leading to his home and property. He’d scrimped and saved to put the down payment on the land when he’d first taken a position as a criminal defense attorney right out of law school. A few more years of saving and a couple of good verdicts had brought him more affluent clients who gave his bank account a much-needed boost. He was able to build a cozy, ranch-style home in Belen, a small community on the outskirts south of Albuquerque.
Kris’s black Dodge Ram was parked next to the barn where she kept her two prized quarter horses. After her separation from her husband, Roddy suggested she move in with him until she got back on her feet. Kris was still angry with her ex-husband. The rotten, drunken, SOB, as she liked to call him, had managed to gamble away almost everything they ever owned. All she had left were the horses and the truck because they were in her name before she married.
“Hey, little girl,” Roddy greeted his sister as he watched her groom the handsome chestnut horse.
“Hey, yourself,” she said, straightening up from cleaning out the animal’s hind hoof. “I thought you were going to drop off Hell Cat and go to your office.”
“Please, Sis, get it right. It’s Devil Cat. You’ll hurt his feelings.”
She put the horse’s leg down and walked toward Roddy. “I don’t see him anywhere around. I think I’m safe. I gather they could take care of him today?”
“Yeah, poor guy. He’s going to lose his nuts you know.”
“Weren’t you expecting that?”
“Eventually I guess, but not today.”
“Better him than you,” she laughed and punched him hard on the arm.
“Hey,” Roddy said. “What was that for? Because you hate the male species?”
“Not all,” she said, “just most. What’s up? Why are you back so early?”
After opening the gate to the pasture, Kris gently swatted the horse on the rump. Roddy helped her put the grooming tools away, and they walked back toward the house. “I can work from home tonight. I don’t have anything pressing, and I want to talk to you about something,” Roddy said.
“Okay. What?”
“Do you remember Pepper Chan from high school?”
“Wow! Talk about a blast from the past,” Kris said while kicking off her muddy boots near the back door. “Sure, I remember Pepper. Why?”
“I saw her today. She’s a veterinarian now.”
“Small world isn’t it? I was so sad when her mom died, and she had to move and go live with her dad. We said we’d stay in contact with each other, and we did until we both started college. After that, I got a couple of emails and phone calls, but then they stopped. I always hated that we lost touch.” Kris moved toward the kitchen sink to wash her hands and said, “Well, how is she? How does she look? Is she married?”
“Beats me. Pepper didn’t stick around long enough for me to ask. She had an emergency, and another vet took over.”
“I remember hearing that something bad happened to her when she was in college,” Kris said, “but I never knew what.”
“Strange,” Roddy said, opening the refrigerator and taking out a beer. “I wonder what it was?”
“And you’re not going to leave it alone are you?”
“Not a chance.”

Chapter 1

Tomas – 1984

Tomas Scholz sits upon a throne beside his father above the stones

of fire. Surrounded by splendour, he bursts with pride as all bow

down and honour them, bestowing gifts of great riches: precious

gems and stones—sardius, topaz, diamond and onyx—silver and

gold, and the rarest of artifacts collected from all over the many

realms. This destiny, although not yet achieved, awaits him after

this world has passed away, or so the shadow has promised.

In time. He must be patient.

A three-toed woodpecker, normally a quiet, shy, little bird,

hammers out a tune on a nearby dead spruce, redirecting Tomas’

thoughts away from his daydreams and back to the matter at hand.

Carrying the device with painstaking care, he reaches a clearing

in the mountains. This flat fold of land has been carefully selected

for the job, unchartered territory, a place no man has previously

travelled. The device is light despite its enormous potential for

destruction, light enough for his nine-year-old hands to carry.

The wind swells in unpredictable gusts sending uprooted weeds

and debris to tumble across the dry landscape. It is not ideal

weather to test out his experiment, on the contrary, but he is

impatient, insistent. If it were anyone else attempting this feat

they would be prudently dissuaded, encouraged to wait for more

opportune conditions. The summer had been a dry one, and the

arid conditions mixed with the gales of wind are a recipe for

disaster.

But Tomas is not like other children. His abilities are powerful

enough to defy even the wind.

Besides, Tomas is too excited to see how it finally works, unable

to wait a moment longer. Adrenaline almost palpable as he flits and

floats across the glade despite his clubbed foot, preparing for the

initial trial of the weapon he has designed and built all by himself.

He is a genius. Wisdom doesn’t grow on trees; it is inherited.

Or prepared in a lab. Both methods are responsible in Tomas’ case.

Born of Renner’s sperm, he has inherited the genes for brilliance,

but his earthly father further manipulated Tomas’ genetic structure

to enhance his potential for genius. In this Renner has been

successful.

Just a child, Tomas is already capable of recombinant DNA

technology and minor medical procedures. Always the perfect

pupil. Always eager to learn more. Technology and inventing

advanced weaponry are his preferred hobbies, skills that come

to him naturally, and had he been allowed to go out in public to

submit these innovations for patenting, he would earn millions,

perhaps billions. But they are billionaires and have no need for

more money. And he is not ready to go out in public, to be exposed

to the world—the world not ready for him yet. For Tomas’ talents

don’t stop there.

Surpassing his higher level of intelligence are his supernatural

abilities, having both fathers to thank for this gift. By the shadow

entering Renner’s body that fateful night in the abandoned chapel,

his DNA changed, which was then passed on to his offspring.

These changes increased the development of DMT produced by

the pineal gland and the subsequent presentation of supernatural

abilities, the like of which have never been seen in humans.

Renner had also manipulated Tomas’ genes, splicing them with

favourable animalistic traits to increase his special abilities. The

final product is a boy who has powers that are both profound and

intense. Unrestrained. In this Renner has also been successful.

Tomas is a telepath, able to read other people’s thoughts

and desires with great ease. Most impressive are his telekinetic

capabilities, able to teleport any object, from the size of a grain of

sand all the way up to a massive Gothic castle to any location he

so desires. Able to transport his own body.

But impressive though this is, Tomas is not perfect. None of

them are. Flaws remain in Renner’s recombinant DNA techniques,

glitches he still struggles to correct with each series of experiments.

There is always an element of trial and error when it comes to

experimenting in new unexplored areas, but he has faith he will

overcome these limitations and the supernatural abilities that all

the offspring display prove he is on the right track.

Tomas is the most handsome of them all if you could call

him handsome. Hair, worn long and unruly. Taller than most

nine-year-olds, he is more muscular as well but not a giant like

some of his brothers. He prefers to wear mostly jogging pants,

jeans, T-shirts, and sweaters for there is no need to dress up here.

No one to impress. His eyes are as black as pitch and empty. Dead

embers.

Born with a cleft palate, Tomas underwent corrective surgery

as a young baby, but Renner being untrained in cosmetic

procedures, the repair didn’t go as well as planned. Tomas can

feed and communicate much better than he would have without

the surgical procedure, but a resultant lisp when speaking words

that contain the letter s has Tomas training extensively to articulate

his words. The lisp now more of an extended, exaggerated s sound.

The speech impediment isn’t as bothersome as the thickened scar

tissue between his nose and upper lip. Tomas plans on visiting

a real cosmetic surgeon who will correct the botched effort his

father performed and eliminate the scar—when he is older, when

he is permitted to venture out into the real world. He also has a

clubbed right foot that gives him a mild limp. These deformities

are considered minor compared to his brothers’. So, he has little

to complain about, this he knows.

His brothers, on the other hand, have not fared as well. The

flaws in Renner’s experiments far more evident. The deformities

more intensive, requiring massive reconstruction, the likes of

which do not yet exist. Tomas is already working diligently on

this limitation, inventing his own brand of prosthetics that will

help the remainder of his triplet brothers—his womb-mates—and

other siblings to help them be more aesthetically pleasing to the

eye or at least less abhorrent while simultaneously helping them

to channel their own gifts. Augment them.

But again, in time.

Tomas’ preparations slowly come to completion. He lopes

across the field through tussock grasses and stunted shrubbery to

the location he has deemed most beneficial for his test. He stops

amidst a patch of denser grasses and wildflowers, adjacent to a

stand of tiny gnarled aspens. Mounds of rhododendron underbrush

proudly display their yellow and white puff ball-shaped flowers

tinged with pink and lavender.

Soon their beauty will be extinguished.

The sound of a river rushing at highs speeds can be detected from

this vantage point, an important proponent for this experiment to

function smoothly.

He looks over to see if the shadow—his other father, the one

that matters most—is watching, desiring his praise. A moment of

insecurity?

But, the moment of weakness is short-lived. As soon as Tomas

senses approval, he commences, extending his right arm towards

the surrounding rhododendron mounds and dry grasses. Clumsily,

he fastens the contraption to his extended right wrist with plastic

straps and buckles. The weapon, a flame thrower, is like no other.

It is controlled by Tomas’ mind alone, lacking buttons or switches,

with nothing to turn it on or off, no dials to increase or decrease

its power, except by his mind’s will.

Abruptly he stops, eyes fastening on the shadow as the sound of

a woman’s scream pierces his mind. The sound is heard through

his gift, although the actual source is not much further than their

location, yet still safely out of harm’s way. Their eyes make contact,

full of mutual understanding. It is Milena, once more in the throes

of labour.

“It will be a boy,” he tells the shadow.

“Yes, yes, I know,” the shadow responds.

They are all boys, so it is a natural conclusion. However, Tomas

knows this on another level, knows it for a fact as the baby’s

thoughts can already be heard, although he is not yet born. “He

is different,” Tomas adds, before returning to his task without

further explanation.

A shiny, black crow bursts out of the shrubbery and furiously

flaps its wings, escaping barely in time, somehow anticipating

the fire that will quickly follow. Tomas telepathically transmits

a message to the weapon to eject a far-reaching rope of flame

from its tip, and the contraption immediately obliges, bathing the

mountain glade in fire. He slowly spins in a circle creating a ring

of fire around him, the flames dancing and rising as if in adoration

and worship. The intense orange from the fire’s light is reflected

in his black eyes as if tiny flames have been sparked from within

the lifeless black embers.

“It works!” he exclaims. “Father, can you see it?”

The flames continue to rise.

And rise. And rise higher still, the flames licking and lapping at

Tomas’ face and body and limbs. Searing, melting, binding. Until

flame and skin become one.

Ash is a Light Warrior who reports to Santa’s Grotto after a three year absence to undertake her review. Expecting to be in disgrace, instead she finds herself totally unprepared for the reception. Her review brings surprises and Ash learns about her own levels of power and connection higher than she had ever understood. Perhaps she is much, much more than the maverick she is considered to be? She must learn to stand with her powers. When Santa enters the Collective Stream of Consciousness and delivers his gifts, he learns that it is indeed time for people to move to the next level. Ash’s team is barely assembled before a breach in the Earth’s Energy Grid makes ti necessary for them to act immediately. Will Ash prove to be all that the Light Warrior Order believes her to be ? And if she is, where will it take her?
 Excerpt
If you look up at the sky it is a deep, deep black and the stars are so bright they
appear to be nearer than the billions of miles away they really are. Close enough to
touch. On the ground the snow is deep, with a crispy topping that reflects the stars
in shimmering sparkles that seem to hypnotise the watcher. “Stay a while and
watch.” This is exactly what Ash has been doing, for how long she does not know,
but for some time, as the cold has started to reach her body and has already numbed
her feet and legs. Ash reaches out her hand up to the sky and imitates catching a
bright star. I might as well catch a star as reach my destination, she says to herself.
She is sitting on a fallen log, alone and rather despondent. She does not have the
energy or inclination to stand up just at the moment. She is pondering her fate. How
long have I been sitting here? I am so tired and my resolve is draining; I should be
near Santa’s Grotto but I sense nothing. Surely, I have not come so far to be lost
here in the north, so near to comfort and safety? She looks up skywards, waiting
for an answer, but none comes. Yes, there is definitely something wrong
somewhere. As she twists round slowly to look at the line of pine trees growing
around her, she feels a sharp pain in her side. Ouch! The ribs are still cracked. The
tiredness makes the pain seem more present and adds to her sense of feeling rather
sorry for herself. Her journey is supposed to have brought her to Santa’s Grotto, as
it is that time of year and she has been summoned. But for some reason the portals
are not opening and she has stopped here to contemplate what has gone wrong.
The snow is deep enough to cover the lower part of the tree trunks, so that the
bottom branches rest on the top of the snow, as though they were balancing the
whole tree. There is no wind, yet Ash hears a sound. At first it sounds like a faint
moan, then she listens harder and realises it is the sound of tree spirits talking. They
are all talking at once and she cannot define any particular words. The tiredness
and pain have made her irritable.
She shouts, “Hey! What are you talking about? I do not understand you, all
talking at once. What say you?”
There is a sudden hush to the babbling and then one or two voices are
whispering and the message is passed down the line of trees. Ash hears it
progressing away from her, down the line towards a tree that she notices is higher
and bigger than the rest. The top branches begin to rustle and the branches move
up and down. Out from the branches, near the top, comes what appears to be brown
smoke with just a hint of green around the edges. Ash knows this to be a tree spirit
for she has the eye to see. The ‘smoke’ moves up towards her and hovers front of
where Ash is sitting. Then it forms the shape of a young girl, looking like a human
of about fourteen times around the sun. Her hair is made of green and flows around
behind her like a flag in the wind.
Ash speaks. “Who addresses me?”
“I am Princess Diva of this part of the forest, known in human terms as glade.”
“Princess?”
“Yes, I am given responsibility to learn. I am not yet fully of knowledge.”
“You are addressing a human, Light Warrior Ash, third class.”
“Ay so.” There is silence. The princess is wondering what to say next.
She begins with a formal greeting. “Welcome! You are free to walk.”
“Thank you. But Princess Diva, your tree spirits are all talking at once and
appear to be speaking a dialect I am unfamiliar with. Yet there is a complaint, is
there not?”
“Ah, not so! No complaint.”
The princess pauses and then begins by speaking carefully and slowly.
Diplomacy is required when you are about to explain to a human that they have
lost their way. Although this one is a Light Warrior, third class, you cannot be too
careful and her inexperience makes her wary.
“Well, they are … that is, the spirits under my charge were wondering, er,
um…” Her voice drifts off, then inspiration suddenly embraces her and she says
brightly, “The tree spirits, and myself also, were wondering why such an illustrious
person should be visiting our side of the forest. Not complaint, but mere curiosity.”
Princess Diva looks at Ash with her head and eyes lowered, hoping diplomacy
has won and she will not be punished. Ash is studying her closely, trying to
decipher the meaning.
She is telling me I am lost.
She asks in a way that repays the diplomacy, “Ay so! Pray tell me in what part
of the forest do you, and they, think I would be walking?”
Relieved at her progress so far, the princess speaks carefully once more.
“We think that you would not be here whilst the moon has passed some time
in the sky. We are of course grateful for your presence. But … but … perhaps you
would be beyond the trees and climbing the mound yonder?”
Ash looks in the direction indicated and can see the snow has covered the
ground and formed a gradual ascent over the nearby hill. In the distance there is a
shadowy grey outline of more hills, possibly even mountains.
Why would I be there? Indeed, if it is so I really am lost. No, not there, but
definitely on some other co-ordinates. Her despondency returns. I will be terribly
late. I am already in trouble for not having been for three years but to be ordered
here and then to miss the most important time of year. This will be very difficult to
live down. I will be ridiculed and laughed at for many times round the sun.
The princess is waiting patiently as she does not wish to interrupt her visitor’s
thoughts.
Ash thinks back to the time when the messenger came to tell her to return to
Santa’s Grotto forthwith and not be late for this year’s ceremony. This year! Of
course, THIS year’s ceremony. This year is the fourth year, 2004, the ‘shift’ must
have taken place several months ago.”
She speaks out loud, “Stupid messenger. Why did she not tell me this year was
shift year!”
She immediately checks her anger. She is as much to blame for not keeping up
to date. She remembers the young messenger standing before her, seemingly
nervous of the message. Ash had smiled and said, “Take your time. It is important
that the message is accurate, do not rush yourself.”
Now as she remembers she is sure the message was given word for word as
instructed. It must have been up to Ash to realise the shift had taken place and to
calculate the correct co-ordinates. Well, how stupid can you be? For the first time
in what seems like days, she starts to laugh and says out loud, “Some warrior I am,
making such a basic mistake. I must be losing my touch.”
The princess looks at her, puzzled, wondering if she had conducted herself in
a way to displease. Ash senses her worry.
“Do not worry, Princess, you have helped a poor lost human. I am pleased you
have spoken to me. Perhaps I would have perished here so far from the Grotto. You
have done well, I am happy to have met you.”
Buoyed by this flattery and praise, the princess smiles widely.
“You are indeed a noble warrior, I shall tell of your passing for many times
around the sun.”
“I hope, Princess, that you will have the opportunity of addressing more
humans to talk about than myself.”
“I may, but we are not honoured so many times. I am pleased much for your
visit.”
“Thank you.”
The princess floats off back to her tree and is absorbed by the branches. With
a shrug of her shoulders and a laugh that she cannot help, despite it pinching her
ribs, Ash sits and contemplates. Such a basic mistake! Every four years, all of
Santa’s Grotto makes a shift in time and space according to the movement of the
Earth and the energy grid that surrounds it. It is insurance against firstly being
found by ‘ordinary’ humans and secondly, maintains the energy field so that it
exists on a dimension other than the third. If they stayed too long, it would become
solid and be part of the third dimension and therefore begin to deteriorate as all
solid things do. Santa and his helpers would age and all the magic and mystery
would perish.
All I have to do is work out the co-ordinates for the Grotto and get moving fast.
She thinks hard as she takes out her notebook, calculating the Earth’s energy grids
in relation to time and space. Her despondency returns. She feels too tired to try.
She cries out.
“That is all I have to do? It is near impossible!”
She laughs again with the hopelessness of the situation and the irony. She looks
up at the sky.
“Well, universe, what is to be done? How shall I proceed? If it is your will then
you need to act now so that I can survive and make the ceremony in time. How do
you propose to perform such a miracle?”
‘Faith’ is the whispered answer that sings in her head.
“Then this is not my time to leave this physical body?”
She waits but there is no other reply.
“Thank you, universe. I will wait to see what unfolds.”
She closes her eyes and concentrates, trying to think positive in what seems
really a hopeless situation. She connects with the higher realms and meditates,
seeking help and guidance.
A few minutes later she hears a whooshing sound and the jangle of bells. A
sleigh crosses the sky about ten metres above her head and descends to land in a
clearing about a hundred metres in front of her. She stands slowly and stiffly, her
feet and legs not responding properly; she realises how numb the cold has made
her. Of all the ways of finding me, I had not thought it would be a sleigh. I am
nearer to the Grotto and its current shift than I thought.
She looks upward, “I thank you, Great Creator, for my saving.”
She wades awkwardly through the snow to meet the sleigh. In the pale light the
sleigh and driver look grey. It is a one reindeer sleigh with just enough room for
two on the front seat. The rails are buried in the snow, with the front curling
upwards above the snowline. A small stocky figure is getting off from the front
driving seat. Ash can see that he is wearing a big full length fur coat that smothers
him from a collar under his chin to his ankles. Just visible, jutting out from his coat,
are big fur boots. Looking at him, you might wonder how he can walk or move
about. On his head he wears his hat with a long tail over the back. On the front his
badge of office, Ash approaches and recognises him in the gloom.
“Greetings, Sergeant Charge of Sleigh.”
“Greetings.” His voice is gruff as indicates his authority.
“I am greatly pleased to see you, perhaps there is a place for me on the sleigh?”
“Indeed, there are no other passengers.”
He nods his head to indicate the surrounding area and looks at her as if to say,
‘Who else am I here for in the middle of nowhere?’
He does not say this, of course, out of respect.
“May I suggest that we board before the cold makes us trees?”
“Indeed. Indeed.”
Ash needs no second invitation and eagerly climbs onto the front seat and he
leaps on beside her with surprising agility. He reaches over the back of the seat and
pulls out a large fur rug from the luggage container.
“You will need this, we are travelling high and fast.”
Before Ash has time to fully get the rug around her shoulders and feet he whips
the reins and the single reindeer takes off, running immediately and is in the air
after only a few strides. Ash takes hold of the rail as the sleigh turns and speeds
through the air, the ground a few hundred metres below.
“I am pleased to have collected you,” the sergeant says.
“Not more than I, I suspect,” Ash replies.
“Hummph! We have two sleighs out looking for you on this cold night.”
Although it may sound like a complaint, Ash knows better than to respond. He
is clearly pleased to have her safe in his sleigh. She knows that they would search
all night if needs be. She thinks this is service indeed for a warrior, third class. The
ceremony must be big this year if they are making so much effort to get everyone
there.
Now, they are flying straight and flat and the reindeer picks up speed. Ash
looks at her; she is small for her age but seems strong and agile. The sergeant
continues, “Administrative cock …” he coughs loudly, as though clearing his throat.
“Um, administrative blunder,” he corrects himself.
Ash is puzzled. “How so?”
“Your young messenger was to have met you within one moon’s cycle but
she—” he pauses, checking himself. It is not good to complain about those below
you in status to those above you.
“For whatever reason, she took two moons cycle, in which case the message
should have included the new co-ordinates. For the shift, that is,” he adds and
glances at her sideways, as if to check she had realised this had taken place. She
nods knowingly.
“Well, of course, another messenger was not sent informing you of said coordinates
as it was assumed the first had already done so.”
She says nothing, not wishing to explain that in truth it was also her own ‘cockup.’
She was comforted that they were sent to look for her, whoever’s fault it was.
She nods. The sergeant in charge is pleased with the nod and satisfied that he is not
carrying a complete idiot, but perhaps one who has made a small mistake.
He adds, “I suppose warriors have made bigger mistakes.” He smiles for the
first time and gives her a reassuring wink.
“It was the supervisor’s duty to ensure that the messenger was fully apprised
of all the facts. She delivered the message as well as she could?”
“Indeed.”
Ash feels no need to dwell any further on the matter. She has been saved and
her journey of four days is near to an end. She can trust the Sergeant Charge to get
them to their destination. She consciously relaxes, and in no time she cannot help
her eyelids closing, her head lolls forward and she drifts into a welcome sleep.
One hour later the sleigh lands in a cul-de-sac. There are ten two-storey
detached houses, made of wood painted in different colours. There are lights on in
the downstairs rooms that shine rays through the windows and light up the snow.
All have wooden verandas on the front, supported by wooden poles, with lanterns
hanging down from the roof.

Seeking refuge from the relentless hunt, we evade the gathering forces of mankind and their guiding masters…the Serpents of Old…the Watchers of humanity. Knowledge and advancements fashioned for humanity’s betterment now turned foul by lord and servant alike, subjugating all to the ever-present examination of the surveilling State. Mankind’s self-subjugation rendering themselves as slaves to the unseen few, who only allow freedoms to peoples paying homage to their institutions of cunning tyrannies. Subtle guidance by the ancient scales now coil tightly about their corrupted human tools to deliver to them the World in arrogant defiance of Creation. It is in this confrontation, I vision the origins of the Old Serpents…in our first civilization, seeing their Lights twisted and fouled by selfish wants and the corruptible doings of their divinities. Their ancient bane…the Horsemen, I see rise, then as now, who through deeds self-driven and compelled leave in their wake punishing destructions as they seek to halt corruptions both mortal and afar. I sense I play a part in the approaching Apocalypse, through my aid to these Horsemen of Prophecy and something more. As I stand at the precipice to the end of the Fourth World-Age of humanity looking out at the coming tempest, I, Nikki, now do as our ancients did in tablets of clay and stone, chronicling humanity’s undiscovered past in these steel bound epics to share with you before the sounding of the trumpets.

Primeval Origins: Paths of Anguish
Book 1 in the Primeval Origins Epic Saga
Publisher: Celestial Fury Publishing
“What if all of our myths and legends are true?”
We seek our origins independently through the sciences of paleontology, archeology, and more. We further seek our origins through the difficult to understand metaphorical languages of our religions. And, we further seek our origins in our myths and legends when we are not arrogantly dismissing them as ancient fantasies, creations of a primitive human mind. None of our independent “origins seekers” have complete a picture of our grand and troubled past, yet all have pieces of the greatest puzzle every to challenge modern man. It is here the Primeval Origins Epic Saga begins, integrating our sciences, our religions, and our myths and legends into a story of the ages, telling of our undiscovered history, mankind’s struggle to survive terrible tyrannies, deadly dinosaurs, brutal beasts, and ancient gods. An epic telling seen through the eyes of the Horsemen of our coming End Times.
