The last of an ancient group of wizards leaves a gift to the newly arrived race of men. It is revered and cared for by a line of priests until it is stolen, and the high priest and his sovereign murdered by a king who believes himself destined to be a great wizard. But from ancient writings the high priest had discovered that the gift is not benevolent as was thought. This forces the son of the high priest, unexpectedly elevated to his father’s position, and the young prince who is equally suddenly King, into a race to find the gift before it can be used as that may cause the destruction of the world. Accompanied by the retired captain of the palace guard they hope to speed their journey by crossing the Wasteland, a seeming desert, which is fabled to be populated by monsters, and from which no visitor has ever returned. In the course of their adventures they are hunted by dog faced men and captured by slavers, but the young prince truly becomes a king, and the priest discovers that he has a destiny that goes beyond the bounds of his world.
EXCERPT

Hiding behind the trees they waited for the approach of the dogfaced men.  The defile was cut deeply into the hillside and was flanked by rocky crags that rose almost vertically to the top of the hill. Their pursuers would have no alternative but to follow them up the defile as the climb on either side of it would be almost impossible in the fury of the thunderstorm.

Carantor, crouching behind a tree was the nearest to the gap through which the dogfaced men would have to come in single file. His plan was to allow a small number of them through before he broke from cover to face the remainder as they tried to climb through the gap. Caran Tuith and Bataan stood a few yards back their swords drawn and ready to deal with those first few in the tight confines of the gully. In the flashes of lightning they could see down the rocky stairway with its steep sides, all the way to the bottom, and they were sure that in their present position they could not be caught unawares. Water ran over the slippery fragments of rock and between their feet before cascading over the tangle of exposed tree roots, much of it falling onto Carantor’s back. Oblivious to the cold water he waited, anxious and alert, for the arrival of the creatures that had pursued them for three days. He knew that there was no possibility of hearing their approach amid the noise of the storm, and although the lightning when it came illuminated the defile and its approach, the heavy rain and the pitch darkness between the flashes could hide their arrival until the very last moment.

All three strained their eyes and ears. Their fingers clenched and unclenched around the hilts of their swords. The rain had soaked them to the skin and though Caran Tuith and Bataan had been oblivious to how wet and cold they were during their flight, now, standing still and quiet, they began to shiver and feel the numbness growing in their toes.

Bataan thought that he saw something move to the right of the defile, a large figure silhouetted for a moment against the blinding white of the lightning. He turned to tell Caran Tuith that he thought the dogfaced men had succeeded in climbing the cliffs and were coming over the top of the hill when, in another flash of lightning, he saw in the young King’s face a sudden alertness as he moved away from Bataan as if readying himself for combat. Bataan did not need to ask what the lightning had revealed to his friend. He too readied himself, and turned his eyes back to the defile trying to discern any shape or movement in the darkness, the figure on the crest above forgotten.

For a moment the storm seemed to lessen a little, like a squall at sea that suddenly abates to give a moments quiet respite before returning with renewed force. In that lull they heard the sound of movement amongst the rocks as feet dislodged loose stones and sent them clattering downhill. As the wind and rain returned Bataan thought that he heard the sound of shouting voices. Then the whole sky flashed white with a tremendous sheet of lightning that lit the ground before them in stark black and white. In its glare the three stared in disbelief at the scene in the defile. The dogfaced men where there, but they were not climbing up to fight. They were struggling in the mesh of nets whose ends were held by large figures straining to keep their footing on the crest above. Once more all was plunged into darkness, and an immediate and deafening crash of thunder showed that the storm was directly overhead.

Although their faces were hidden in the dark, both Bataan and Caran Tuith’s wore the same bewildered expression. The strange tableau, cast into such stark relief by the lightning, was unexpected and confusing. Almost before they had time to have a second thought Carantor was with them.

“Run” he yelled over the noise of the storm.

“Stop that.” I had no sympathy for her right now. She started this shit.

“Fuck off.”

That did it. I’d been wondering whether to go easy on her ass, all she’d needed to do was apologize. But she wouldn’t. I had to break through this angry front if we had any hope of staying together long enough to make this baby. I wasn’t the best role model for keeping my cool, and I knew that, but something had to bring an end to how volatile we were.

“Lie face down on the bed,” I told her.

“No.”

“DO IT!” I roared. I should have gone out. Got some space from her. But this couldn’t wait.

She seemed to crumple for a moment, and that’s when I figured it out. When she was a kid, someone had controlled her by intimidating her.

Fuck. I needed to completely change my approach because this was too close to what she was afraid of.

Too late.

She launched herself at me, screaming and swearing. She scratched my chest and I thought I’d got her under control when I grasped her wrists in my hands. She took advantage of the fact I was busy stopping her clawing at me, and she kneed me in the bollocks. Pain exploded in my crown jewels and I was down.

Lying on the floor in agony really brought home to me just how much I’d fucked this whole thing up. But she didn’t stop. Kicking at my ribs, she launched into a tirade.

“Fuck you! Fuck your shit! Fuck this baby thing! Fuck everything.”

She’d really lost it this time. I pushed through the pain, the same way I’d done when I’d gotten my burns. I got to my feet, and almost on autopilot, I wrestled her to the ground and stripped her bare, glad she was only wearing a strappy cotton dress today.

I manhandled her until she was hogtied on the bed. Her wrists were fastened behind her back with thick leather cuffs and her ankles were bent at the knees and attached to her wrists with more cuffs. They were the sort that clipped to each other, to make it easy to change the submissive’s position.

“Are we going to talk, now?” I asked her.

“Fuck you!”

She was still swearing so I got the ball gag. When I came close, she grit her teeth and pressed her lips together. But I knew exactly where to press, either side of her jaw hinge, to force her mouth open. She kept resisting me, but it was just going to make her jaw ache. I got the ball gag in and tied it around the back of her head. She tried to spit it out but it was too tight.

“Okay, I’ll talk. Some bad shit happened to you, probably when you were a kid, and now your pissed at the entire world. But I won’t stand for this crap. Under my roof, you behave yourself. You respect me. You obey me. When you don’t, I will punish you. See, I enjoy hurting you. It makes me hard. I will punish you as often as it takes to make you learn the lesson. I don’t need to hurt you to get off, but when you fuck with me… well, one of us will enjoy making you take the consequences. And there will always be consequences. You enjoy pain? Keep fucking with me. Want an easy life? Learn to control your temper.”

I didn’t use the cane. I was too angry. While I wanted to hurt her this much, there was a chance I wouldn’t stop.

Fall Into Mystery Feature

Fall Into A Romantic Mystery

With the temperature dropping and leaves turning colors, it’s time to get ready for the cool days of fall. And what better way to prepare for the long nights ahead than to download a great whodunit novel with a dash (or heaping helping) of romance. Below we have crafted a quiz to help you find your next great read, but be warned, the titles all have mysteries that need to be solved and villains that must be brought to justice. So grab a thick blanket, a cup of hot cocoa, and answer the following questions to discover which romantic mystery you will want to “fall” into next.

  1. Where is your perfect romantic mystery set?

a) In “small town USA”. The everyday setting makes the violent crimes all the more shocking.

b) The rolling hills of Texas where there are lots of places to hide.

c) In a historic mansion near the choppy waters of Virginia, giving the story a Gothic feel.

  1. I want to read about a heroine who is …

a) …one hundred percent devoted to her family yet balanced enough to find success in her chosen career.

b) … intelligent and diligent, with a pressing drive to help others.

c) … currently in mourning after losing a loved one, but strong enough to take on any challenge.

  1. Is your heroine in peril?

a) She may face down a bad guy (or two), but thankfully her significant other is always there to guard her with his life.

b) In my fictional world nobody is safe. NOBODY!

c) The heroine doesn’t face physical danger, but her emotions take a severe beating as she learns terrible secrets from the past.

  1. When your heroine needs backup, who is she going to call?

a) Her BF who just happens to be a private investigator that solves crimes for a living.

b) A steely-eyed Texas Ranger who is known for delivering justice.

c) The town leader who is a successful businessman and pillar of the community.

  1. My ideal hero is….

a) …totally and completely devoted to supporting his woman.

b) …dependable and incredibly strong, however, he has suffered a loss and every once in a while his vulnerability shows through.

c) …steadfast, principled, and dedicated to his community.

  1. When sitting down to read a mystery, the crimes should be…

a) … studied in a clinical, professional manner.

b) … frequent and terrifying! I want something that keeps me up at night.

c) … in the past. I like trying to figure out who the bad guy is instead of focusing on violence.

  1. When the last page of the book is read, I want to feel…

a) … that second chances are not only real, but they can be incredibly joyous.

b) … a sense of deep satisfaction that justice has been found and order restored.

c) … tremendous hope and optimism for the future.

Excerpt – The Orange Blossom Room

Arthur had assigned her to a child’s bedroom? Strolling farther inside, she picked up a book from the bedside table. Flipping to the first page, she read a few lines aloud. “The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat. They took some honey, and plenty of money, wrapped up in a five-pound note.”

Peals of laughter rang in her ears and warmth spread throughout her body. She closed her eyes, savoring the sense of happiness reverberating through her. The young girl who owned this book had cherished every word.

Hello, little girl, are you here? Come speak with me. We can be friends, if you like.

“A silly story, if ever there was one,” Arthur said, disturbing the quiet moment.

Maribeth grinned as she stroked her hand over the colorful illustration. “This was one of my favorites as a child, especially when a brooding pirate read it to me. Before meeting Eveline, my guardian—”

The steward’s brow shot up and she snapped her mouth shut, tossing the book onto the bed. She shouldn’t share such stories with a stranger. Better she get on with her purpose for being here. She turned her attention to unbuttoning her coat.

“Go on,” he said. “You had a fascinating childhood. I would love to hear more.”

Arthur leaned his shoulder against the wall, folding his arms over his chest while scrutinizing her. Why did he study her so intently with that enigmatic turn of his lips? Men never watched her every move with interest or engaged her in more than small talk. Her fingers trembled, and she looked away. Speaking about her childhood was out of the question.

“I’m told the daughter of Madame Brown favored that book as well,” he finally said.

“The child who slept here?” she asked.

The gleam in his eyes was inscrutable. “No one else has stayed overnight in this room since the child disappeared many years ago.”

Her chest tightened, and she swallowed past the bile rising in her throat. Something terrible had happened to the girl, every fiber of Maribeth’s being confirmed the truth of the matter.

“I thought perhaps…” The steward pressed his lips together as if thinking better of voicing his thoughts aloud, but the cat was out of the bag.

“You thought my sleeping in this room might nettle the ghost of her mother into seeking me out?”

He rubbed his jaw with a small measure of contrition reflected in his eyes. “Rather coldhearted of me, I suppose. Would you prefer accommodations in the servants’ quarters?”

“Certainly not.” As her gaze swept through the bedroom, a tingling foreboding grew in her belly. “Your intuition was spot on.”

“Does anything scare you, Maribeth?”

He sauntered behind her and peeled the coat off her shoulders. His left hand brushed hers as he tugged on one of the fitted sleeves. She held her breath, attuned in every way to his presence; his heady scent, the sound of his soft breathing, his body heat radiating on her back. She wanted…

She truly could not say. Her experiences with men outside her family circle were limited. But she had witnessed Edith with her husband in unguarded moments when they thought no one was looking. Did she wish Arthur would press his lips on her nape or steal a kiss?

Maybe.

“I have nothing to fear from the ghost of Madame Brown,” she said, turning to gaze up at him. But his nearness and the way he purred her name in that seductive baritone was more than a little unsettling. Ghosts rarely gave cause to be feared. But a handsome man who consumed her with every look…

He folded her coat and placed it on the end of the bed.

“I’ll settle in here later,” she said, clearing her throat. “What was the little girl’s name?”

“Ah, ah, ah.” He shook his head. “I’m afraid you must discover that on your own.”

Her eyes narrowed. “A test of my skills? I could simply inquire with Mrs. Hawkins.”

“But you won’t. I sense your pride doesn’t permit you to travel the easy route.” He smirked.

Bastard. Of course his observation was dead on. She dearly loved a challenge.
