The last of an ancient group of wizards leaves a gift to the newly arrived race of men. It is revered and cared for by a line of priests until it is stolen, and the high priest and his sovereign murdered by a king who believes himself destined to be a great wizard. But from ancient writings the high priest had discovered that the gift is not benevolent as was thought. This forces the son of the high priest, unexpectedly elevated to his father’s position, and the young prince who is equally suddenly King, into a race to find the gift before it can be used as that may cause the destruction of the world. Accompanied by the retired captain of the palace guard they hope to speed their journey by crossing the Wasteland, a seeming desert, which is fabled to be populated by monsters, and from which no visitor has ever returned. In the course of their adventures they are hunted by dog faced men and captured by slavers, but the young prince truly becomes a king, and the priest discovers that he has a destiny that goes beyond the bounds of his world.
Excerpt
“My Lord” he said, the words finally exploding from his lips.
“Stay and be easy” Caran Tuith said. “Tell us what happened to you. You were hurt in your boat and drifted out to sea?” he tried to help the man’s memory.
Once more a startled and worried look came onto his face. He stared for what seemed an age into the Prince’s eyes and then slowly began to shake his head.
“No my Lord. I was injured before I reached the boat. I was wounded in the fighting.” His voice was steady but still weak and low.
At this revelation all of the men became attentive, even Janorin seemed to recall his thoughts to the present.
“Fighting?” said the ship’s Captain “What was this, some seafront brawl. An argument over fish?”
Again the man shook his head. “No sir. Fighting with the soldiers who came into the city. We tried to defend ourselves but there were too many, and they came in complete surprise. “ Once more he raised his hand to the wound on his head. ”I thought that I was killed when I saw that sword swing at my head. Then I woke the next morning alive, I do not know what saved me, maybe the power of the Gift.” He looked over at Bataan, realising now who he was.
Caran Tuith was now on his knees next to the man, and the others had crowded in closer to him to hear his weak voice.
“The city was attacked, by whom? Where were the Palace Guard?” he looked quickly at Janorin and saw shock and disbelief in his sallow face.
“I do not know by whom my Lord” the man continued “They were short men with cruel eyes. They came as if by magic. No one saw them and then suddenly they were all around and inside the city. They seemed to want to kill everyone. During the day I was in fear of my life. I could hear yelling in some language I had never heard before. And screaming, I heard lots of screaming. I was so weak that I could not move from where I had fallen, but by the power of the Gift they did not see me. That night I managed to crawl along the back ways down to the harbour. There were fires everywhere. The invaders in their green tunics were looting the houses and shops. I thought once or twice that I saw our soldiers stop them, but they seemed to be with them, only different, taller men.
When I reached the harbour it was night and I thought that I would surely be seen, but there was no one on the quays that I could see, so I got down into the nearest boat and set it adrift. I knew that the tide was ebbing and that it would take me out into the open water. I had not thought beyond that. The last thing I saw as the cobble cleared the quays was the sun rising behind the city and smoke filling the sky everywhere. From the city and the palace.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

It’s you

There is a marching band pounding away in my brain.

I must have had too much to drink at the rehearsal dinner last night. I think. I can get my ass ready for today—my wedding day—because if I don’t, my bestie, Emma, will have my ass.

I pry my eyes open, only then do I realize that I am not in our hotel room on the coast. I’m not in the luxury king bed full of fluffy pillows and down comforters near a window looking out at the ocean. I’m not where I should be. It takes my brain a minute, still feeling as fuzzy as it is, that I’m not . . . safe.

The light shines through the wooden slats of the doors.

I’m here. I am right back where I started. Where I thought I would die when I was so small, just a baby really. I’m where I once escaped and had naively thought I would never be back. I scoot back on the worn, torn carpet floor of the closet that I was locked in once before, until my back hits the wall. I try to make myself as small as possible hoping against all hope that he won’t see me but as I hear the footsteps growing louder and louder, I know that there is no hope to be found at all.

The closet door swings opened and I realize how stupid I have been. All this time that I struggled, that I suffered from those terrible nightmares and prayed that they would either end or I would finally remember just who had tried to harm me when I was just six years old. All those times I thought I was safe, that I was free, were really nothing but lies because looking down at me with a sinister smile on his face in this little house of horrors from my haunted past is the last person I ever would have thought would be capable of this kind of thing.

I was never free, I was living under the watchful eye of a monster, a wolf in sheep’s clothing just waiting for their chance to pounce. His smile broadens and his eyes glimmer with excitement in the knowledge that he’s won. It’s finally over, this game of cat and mouse that we have been silently engaged in for twenty four years.

He pulls his leather belt free from his pants and loops it around my neck. I look up into his warm eyes, ones that I had always trusted as he tightens the leather around my neck.

“It’s you. It was always you,” I say as suddenly every memory finally clicks into place. Anna would be so proud.

I gasp as the air is squeezed out of my lungs. I struggle to pull more in even though in my brain I know that it isn’t possible. Maybe this is how it was always supposed to be. Maybe this is how my story was always supposed to end. My name is Detective Claire Goodnite and I’m about to die.

You know what they say, every story has its ending, I just wish I was prepared.

I can already tell that this one’s gonna sting . . .

Best Evidence – Blitz

Poetry
Date Published: January 2018

Evocative, deceptively straightforward and wry poetry that delivers a shock to the system.
Poet Mark S. Osaki covers a number of poignant topics in Best Evidence. Each poem in the four sections gives you a glimpse of a formative moment in Osaki’s life or expands your viewpoint on conflicts in the world. Some poems, like the powerful “Chinese Camp, California,” speak of a larger cultural experience and the nuances of navigating identity as an Asian American. Others still, like “Gun Song,” show the psychological and cultural impact of war. In each new work, Osaki captures powerful moments of longing and loss.

Praise for Best Evidence:
“Mark Osaki has shown himself to be one of the best poets of his generation.” — David Rains Wallace, Author, The Klamath Knot: Explorations of Myth and Evolution

“I have found the poetic voices of Asian Americans to be among the strongest and most original in contemporary English literature. Among those writers, none impress me more than does Mark Osaki.” — Joseph Bruchac, The Greenfield Review Press

“Mark Osaki belongs to no school, follows no master, and has stayed on the far margin of the business part of poetry. His spare style is a vehicle for an outsider’s view of our world. His poetic toughness is not for those who regard poetry as comfort. He is paring his experiences closer to a powerful reporting, as only poetry can report.” — Leonard Nathan

“Mark S Osaki undertakes to illuminate the difficulty of  establishing one’s home in a nation not one’s own. These often soulful poems speak to us as members of families, as lovers, as travelers, journeys a reader is rewarded for taking. — Carole L. Glickfeld, Author, Swimming Toward the Ocean

“Mark Osaki brings a rich poetic voice to his collection of poems in his recent book “Best Evidence”.  He captures past and present moments, expressing hope through pain and personal loss. His work is subtle in nuances, yet possesses a keen clarity of vision and ultimately celebrates life itself.” — Elizabeth Hack, Artist and Editor, San Francisco Peace and Hope

“Thoughtful, timely writing that demands further attention.” — Kirkus Review

“A well done collection of poems seen from an Asian perspective of being an American.  Interesting and enlightening.” — Goodreads

“Mark Osaki’s mastery of language and his ability to elicit in his reader introspective thoughts/emotions is evident in his poetry. If you are looking to learn more about racial prejudice, war, and its resultant psychological aftereffects, this is definitely the book for you.” — Online Book Club
About the Author
Mark S. Osaki was born in Sacramento, California. He attended the University of California, Berkeley as an Alumni Scholar and went on to do graduate work in International Relations and Security Studies.

Ellie Malouff returns with a smashing standalone contemporary romance novel that was named a finalist for the 2018 Stiletto Contest and 2018 Molly Contest. On October 1, travel across the Atlantic with Cara Montgomery when she inherits an English estate with a devilishly handsome Brit.

Reid Lewis is handsome, successful, and every bit the English gentleman. Years spent in England’s finest boarding schools will do that.

Cara Montgomery is a California girl through and through, even if she was born across the pond. As a struggling graduate student, she works part-time at a coffee house, slinging espresso for San Diego’s
caffeine addicted.

When these two strangers are named the sole beneficiaries of a substantial English estate that rivals Pemberley, their worlds collide and tensions flare. They couldn’t be more different. Cara’s got a flair for Mexican food, books, and leggings. Reid is as posh as they come and a regular on the black-tie gala scene.

Against Reid’s better judgment, he agrees to stay and play house with Cara so she can search not only for keepsakes from her childhood but for the family secrets that have been hidden from her all her life.

Spending the summer together in a Somerset mansion isn’t what either of them had in mind, but it has its perks, especially when the person you want beyond reason is living under the same roof.
