Book Excerpt

I grabbed Ginger by the hand and pulled her out of the room, down the hall and to the bathroom. Her resistance was futile, her fear unimportant. I knew what I had to do, and if she were smart, she’d realize it, too. If she wanted to live. I opened the bathroom door and yanked her inside, thanking fuck that I found it empty. It was filthy, but better than nothing, and it had a shower that everyone used when they felt the need to be clean, which wasn’t often.
Ginger spun around when I shut the door, the look of a trapped animal in her pretty blues. I ignored her growing terror, steeling myself for what I had to do. Even behind closed doors I had to make it real, had to be convincing that I was an unfeeling bastard. I saw her swallow, could see her tits rising and falling rapidly as the fear of the unknown overwhelmed her. She was expecting the worst, preparing herself to do whatever she had to do to survive.
“Take off your clothes.” I kept my tone harsh, indifferent to her growing panic.
She shook her head vigorously and stepped back, slamming hard against the cracked porcelain sink. A nervous cry escaped her, and her eyes were wild as she took in her surroundings and realized that there was no escape. Her gaze touched on the door behind me before meeting my eyes.
“Please-“
“Take off your fucking clothes,” I said in an uncaring, demanding tone. “You’re filthy, and not in a way that gets my dick hard. Now undress.” I removed my cut and the t-shirt beneath it. “In fact, I think I’ll join you.” Her eyes nearly popped out of her head at that. “If you’re not undressed by the time I’m out of my clothes, you won’t like the consequences.” I kicked off my boots as my hands went to the front of my pants.
As I’d expected she would, Ginger’s small hands began to unbutton her blouse. Slowly she began to expose enticing, creamy skin to my wandering eyes. I undid my pants. She lowered her gaze to the floor and turned around before reluctantly removing the garment. I let her have her moment of modesty before I looked into the mirror in front of her. Fuck. My dick took notice of her perfect tits and rosy nipples. Hard nipples. Surprising.
I lowered my zipper, the sound of it overloud in the tiny room. I could tell that she knew what I was doing by the stiffening of her backside, but she didn’t let it stop her from removing her jeans. As I kicked mine away, hers hit the floor. I hissed, taking in the mouth-watering curves of her shapely ass, an ass I wanted to dig my fingers into while I was grinding my dick into her cunt. Fucking hell, I hadn’t expected the surge of lust that was heating my blood at an alarming rate.

Damien Morgan learned a long time ago that love was just a figment of someone’s warped imagination and good girls simply didn’t exist because women were master manipulators. Nonetheless, he’s happy to wish his brother well when he decides to take the plunge.
Serenity Hanscom is shocked that she’s been invited to the wedding a year after her sister played matchmaker for the groom and had an active role in a plot to murder his sister-in-law. Despite the rather unusual circumstances, Serenity accepts the invitation because it’s an opportunity to mingle with Miami’s elites. But the second she catches sight of Damien, she’s reminded of the horrible events that led to her father’s imprisonment, all because of him. Determined to ignore him, as the evening goes by, she finds herself drawn to him more and more.
Will their plan to stay clear of love backfire on them and instead become the first step to an unexpected happily-ever-after?
Excerpt

This is UNEDITED and will be cleaned up when the book releases in February. This is for sneak peak purposes only!
Once everyone stood up and cheered for the bride and groom’s kiss, Serenity sunk in her seat and tried to hide. Her glass was almost empty but it sounded like the ceremony was finished. She stood and joined the crowd of people clapping their hands. Soon, the yacht would return to shore and she’d run.
The bride and groom walked past her fast. The captain said, “Please wait in your seats for five minutes while we transition to the reception. Waiters will offer everyone a glass of champagne for this short intercession.”
More champagne might help her survive this. She slumped into her seat and held her hand high to signal she wanted a glass. The waiter handed her glass to the man at the end of the row and her neighbors passed it. Once everyone in her row had a glass, the server moved forward and she nodded her head at the people next to her then took a sip. The champagne tasted sweeter without staring at people her sister almost killed or the man that set her father up. Her skin grew goose bumps and the air grew warmer. There was something tasty in the air itself. A second later, Damien turned around and as he stared at her, he winked, “This will be over soon, sweetheart.”
“Don’t be sexist.” She swallowed her sip and took a deep breath. Damien had no right to say anything like that, to her. She turned her nose in the air. “I’ll never be your sweetheart.”
“Relax.” He then motioned for the man next to him to change seats. Without another word to her, he came and sat beside her. “I’m here to make amends.”
“How?” He clicked his glass with hers. She refused to drink and shook her head. “Damien Morgan, that’s impossible. You and I can never be friends.”
“Why?” He raised his eyebrow.
Tonight he insulted her. Years ago he ruined her life and he had no shame about any of it. She sipped her champagne as steel ran up her spine. “I know who you are and how you knew my father.”
He sipped his own glass. “Neither of our father’s were boy scouts, sweetheart.”
“Perhaps I wasn’t clear. Don’t patronize me with the nickname ‘sweetheart.’ It’s insulting.” Her free hand formed a fist at her side. Damien Morgan was the last person on earth to insult her, again. She knew better than to get riled up. She forced her hand to uncurl itself and gulped another sip. In one minute, she could get up with the crowd and lose Damien.
“I’ll happily be your sweetheart.”
“Never going to happen.” Sometimes she wished she was a guy who could tell another to back away and be respected. She folded her hand over her waist. “Forget this conversation.”
“Serenity…”
“Wow.” Her eyebrows both raised as she shook her head. “You do know my name?”
“I should not have insulted you earlier. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t.” Sorry echoed in her ear. If it was anyone else, she’d close her eyes, say a prayer and then wish him well. However Damien wasn’t anyone else, and he had no idea. She finished her drink and then waved for the waiter to get another. Once she had her drink, she squared her shoulders and stared hard toward the now empty altar. “You didn’t know I would walk in on your conversation about me earlier. You didn’t know I remembered you at my father’s house. And for the record, you say what you want about me. I don’t care.”

Title: The Pretender

Genre Romantic Suspense
About The Pretender:
They say it takes a thief to catch a thief, and Harrison Tate is proof. Once a professional burglar, he now makes a lawful living tracking down stolen art. Gabrielle Wright has long been estranged from her wealthy family, but she didn’t kill her sister. Trouble is, the only person who can prove it is the sexy, elusive criminal who shouldn’t have been at the island estate on that terrible night. She’s not expecting honor among thieves—or for their mutual attraction to spark into an intense inferno of desire.
Under the guise of evaluating her family’s art, Harris comes back to the estate hoping to clear Gabby’s name. But returning to the scene of the crime has never been riskier, with their hearts and lives on the line.

EXCERPT

“How exactly does one become an art appraiser?”

That sexy smile of his came roaring back. “We’re changing the subject?”

She nodded. “Without even an ounce of subtlety.”

The rich sound of his laugh floated through the dark night. “Then the answer is easy—misspent youth.”

“What are you talking about? Art appraising sounds like something wealthy people would be into. Like, I’m looking at you and thinking private-school boy.” She studied his face and hummed as she tried to pin him down, figure out his untold story. “Maybe even a boarding school.”

He snorted. “Your people-reading skills are way off tonight.”

That answer . . . it had her wanting to know more. She beat back the urge to pepper him with questions. If she took a turn, he would want one. No way.

She pointed at the gooey s’more oozing between his fingers. “Blame the marshmallow.”

“They’re growing on you.”

“Not really.” She’d never been a fan. “The sticky thing . . . it’s annoying.”

He held up a hand and wore a look of fake outrage. “Honestly, you keep talking like that and I’ll have to leave the island.”

“I wish I had that option.” She hadn’t meant to say that, but the words were out there now.

His head snapped back as he looked at her. “Do you really have to be here?”

“I owe it to Tabitha.” And it was a debt Gabby took seriously. Her sweet, loving sister deserved so much more than the end she got. The idea of her dying alone and afraid twisted Gabby’s insides into knots. She had faint memories of a man and footsteps that horrible afternoon, but Tabitha was gone by the time Gabby reached her. “Someone needs to care about what really happened to her.”

“No theories?”

“Too many, actually.” Someone looking for cash. Some jerk hoping to find a woman alone. Every option centered on the hazy figure she saw leaving the house. The one she’d almost convinced herself she’d dreamed up.

“Are you really not going to sleep inside tonight?” he asked.

“I might sleep on the porch.” That was the plan. There or the boathouse, where there’d be some protection from the wind.

“It’s freezing out here.” Harris rubbed his hands together in front of the fire as if to prove his point.

“I’ll be fine.” When he started to say something, she talked over him. “I’m serious, Harris. I can’t be in the house. Not yet. Tomorrow, maybe. In the light.”

“Have you been in there since . . .”

He didn’t need to finish the sentence because she knew where he was going. “Since I found her body? No.”

He let out a long, loud breath as he wrapped up the chocolate bar again. “Take the guesthouse.”

The idea sounded so much better than any other option. She’d stayed there on and off with Tabitha since their parents died. Her sister loved the solitude of island but Gabby always worried the lack of companionship would prove to be too much. She stopped in. She swung through. She came up with excuses to be there for days at a time with her sister before jumping off again.

“Where would you sleep?” A not entirely unwelcome idea formed in her brain. “Or was that a really sloppy pass?”

“Sloppy?” He shook his head. “Woman, come on. It takes skill to look debonair while having your fingers stuck together with marshmallow.”

He held up his fingers to show her.

“You’re right,” she said, ignoring the fact he pulled off the look just fine.

He picked up the chocolate bar then dropped it again. “Melting chocolate. I mean, I’m balancing a lot over here.”

He really was adorable. Sexy and hot in a want-to-climb-him way, but kind of sweet, too.

Too bad she thought it was all a very calculated act.

“You’re very impressive,” she said in the most condescending voice she could muster.

“Thanks for noticing.” He wiped his hands on a paper towel and put the rest of the s’mores ingredients away. “But the offer still stands. The guesthouse has a couch and a floor. I can sleep on one of those.”

So tempting.

“No.” The offer should have been easy to resist but she had to force the denial out. She stood up, thinking leaving might be the only way she could win this round. “I’ll be fine.”

He glanced up at her. “I get the impression you’re always fine, Gabby.”

“Then you’re not looking very closely.”

Book Excerpt

“Whatever it is you want, I can help you get it. You don’t have to do this.”
“You can’t,” he answered, and he knew it was true. The lack of action from the asshole when she’d begged on the phone had made it clear. As long as he stopped, Mercier would continue to drag this out — which left only one option, he’d have to hurt the girl, torture her until he gave in for real. No more promises, no more time, no more deadlines.
Action or destruction.
“I can. Ju-just give me the chance.” Her hands tightened into fists as he moved closer, tugging at the chains that he already knew wouldn’t give her any slack.
“No more chances for you or Daddy. Either he signs, or we keep going until you’re done.”
“Done?” she whispered, and the tears pooling in her eyes caught the lights making them shine. So fucking beautiful. Such a fucking waste.
“That’s right.”
“Oh God!” The girl fought hard, ripping at the cuffs, making her breasts bounce, nipples hardened by the cool air in the room, and he watched for a minute as a few tears leaked out into her hair.
“Don’t worry, I don’t want you to talk to him this time.” Lifting the ball gag in his hands, he smiled underneath the mask when she shook her head, panic making her flail harder at the chains while his cock stiffened against his leg.
Please! Just let me talk to him again, please, tell me what you want him to sell and I’ll convince him! I swear! I’ll do it!” As she begged, he knelt down beside her, taking a moment to trace one finger over the soft skin of her arm. She felt so pure, so good, and how someone like her had come from someone so evil he couldn’t figure out — but none of that mattered. All he needed was her suffering.
“Open up.” He held the gag in front of her face, offering her the easy way, but she clenched her teeth tight just like he’d expected. Somehow the girl was simultaneously terrified of him, and still defiant. Where was her sense of self-preservation? Why wasn’t she submitting to him fully in an attempt to make him lenient?
Not like it would work.
Wrapping his hand under her chin, he dug his fingers into the muscles of her jaw, slowly forcing her mouth wide as she whimpered. As soon as there was enough space, he forced the ball gag between her teeth, and then pressed his hand down to keep it there. “Tsk, tsk. I wasn’t asking, princess, and when you disobey you just make me angry.”
A sharp, incomprehensible shout escaped her lips, so he locked the gag a notch too tight, leaving her groaning as her jaw strained.
“You should hope he loves you as much as you think he does.”
Destruction Teaser 4
“Loved the story! Read it right through in one sitting!”
