Science Fiction

Date to be Published: October 11th

Set in the early 23rd century, THE STARS RAIN DOWN follows an android woman
pursuing a renegade human. At the same time, he searches for his missing
wife and child, abducted by alien pirates, and sold into slavery. Special
Agent Catherine Mercer, an artificial intelligence and agent of
Interplanetary Security (think FBI in space), is given the assignment to
pursue and apprehend Rick McCabe, a freighter pilot suspected of illegally
smuggling passengers to the free colony of Aranae, some 1300 light years
from Earth. Rick, on the other hand, on route to Aranae, was attacked by
pirates and separated from his pregnant wife, Sarah, who was captured. But,
having come under the suspicion of IPS of illegally transporting passengers,
Rick goes rogue and sets off to find Sarah while evading Catherine trying to
capture him. Rick and his tech-savvy partner QR follow a trail of clues and
tips that lead from one planet to another, from one hostile slave owner and
alien race to more pirates and unsavory characters. Along the journey,
Catherine learns that being human is more than possessing a flesh and blood
body. The transitory body holds an eternal spirit that yearns to be free.

Catherine spotted the Sheriff across the city plaza as she made her way to his office. He rode his
tarantula spider, a large blue, heading for the public latrines to one side.
“Sheriff Duncan!” Catherine yelled as she strode over the dusty, unpaved road, making a straight
line toward the sheriff. “Sheriff! A word with you, please.”
Duncan gave little indication that he acknowledged Catherine’s presence. A slight nod of his head,
that was all. He brought his spider to a stop at the latrines.
Catherine caught up to him.
“What can I do for you, Cat?” Duncan asked, dismounting.
“It’s Catherine. And I must discuss the issues I’m having with your citizens.”
Duncan handed the reins of his spider to Catherine. “Hold on to Daisy, would you please?”
Perplexed, Catherine looked at the reins in her hands. “What?”
“I gotta use the john.” Duncan stepped into a vacant stall and closed the door behind him.
Catherine looked at Daisy at the other end of the reins. She was now in control of a large blue
tarantula, which peered back at her with three pairs of black eyes.
“Sheriff, this is—”
Daisy hissed and pulled back, knocking Catherine off balance.
Catherine regained her footing and tightened her grip on the reins. She found her best
authoritative voice. “Sheriff Duncan, I did not come to this planet to hold your spider.”
“You’re doing a fine job,” came Duncan’s voice from within the latrine.
Daisy yanked back again, but Catherine hung on, digging her feet in.
“My job is to find Rick McCabe, and your citizens are not helping at all.”
“What am I supposed to do about it?”
“I want you to put pressure on the ship dealers. Order them to cooperate.”
Daisy reared, throwing up her front legs and baring her fangs in a display of intimidation. She
hissed and growled.
Catherine hung on.
Duncan laughed. “Like that’s ever worked before.”
A man approached from behind Catherine. She became aware of him, but as she was preoccupied
with controlling Daisy, she did not turn to acknowledge him.
The spider tried Catherine’s patience, which was running thin even for an android. When Daisy
pulled back on the reins, Catherine yanked back.
“Submit to my authority! Beast!”
Daisy jerked backward, pulling Catherine off her feet and falling to the unpaved road, hard on her
belly. Catherine hung on but was dragged several feet across the tawny dust.
Having proved her point, Daisy stopped and waited for Catherine to regain her feet.
“You will comply!” Catherine shouted as she got her balance under her feet.
“Agent Mercer?” said a male voice behind her.
Catherine looked around to see the man who had approached a few moments before.
“I am Agent Mercer,” she said.
“Agent James Soto, IPS,” the newcomer said. He looked to be in his thirties, tall, of Asian descent.
“Is that you, Jim?” came Duncan’s voice from the latrine.
“It’s me, Bob,” Soto said. He looked to Catherine once more. “Here… Let me show you.” James
took the reins from Catherine.
At that exact moment, Daisy settled down. She came near him, releasing a rumble of
contentedness.
“You see?” he said. “Easy.” James guided Daisy back to the latrines.
Catherine brushed the dust from her clothes and said, “This animal does not like me.”
“Yeah, I think it’s all that ‘Submit to my authority’ stuff. You might wanna lighten up.”
Sheriff Duncan emerged from the latrine, pulling on his waistband. “Thanks, Jim. She wasn’t any
trouble, was she?”
“No, not at all.”
“Daisy can get a little spirited sometimes. That’s why we call her Crazy Daisy.”
Duncan took the reins from Soto.
“She was an absolute angel,” James said. “Right, Catherine?”
Catherine stared at Soto as the feeling of being the target of a prank sank in. She kept her thoughts
to herself and said nothing.
Duncan mounted his saddle on Daisy. “Say, Jim, I’m having a barbecue at my place this Saturday.
You’re invited.”
“Sounds great,” James said. “I’ll bring some beers.”
“Bring your little friend here, too.”
“I am not his little friend,” Catherine said, quick to make that distinction.
James smiled and nodded. “We’ll see you Saturday.”
Duncan pulled his well-behaved and obedient spider away from the latrines, kicked her into
motion, and headed down the road.
“Two-o-clock,” Duncan said before moving out of earshot.
Catherine watched the sheriff riding off on Daisy. She shook her head. “I will never understand
these people. This planet.”
“Not so bad once you get used to it. I’ve been here two years now. Kinda like it.”
“Everything is out of control. I find the people boorish and obstinate.”
Catherine walked from the latrines with no destination in mind. Just get away from there.

About the Author

Glenn Thomas

Glenn Thomas’s life path has been a meandering one, setting new life
goals at various points along the way, gaining skills in art, photography,
film-making, driving, and ultimately, writing in screenplays and
prose.  As a self-described “high-functioning daydreamer,”
Glenn often finds contentment in self-imposed isolation, in conversation
with characters only he sees and hears, in universes of his own
creation.  Once in a while, he writes them down into scripts and novels
to share with the world.

Glenn lives in the Los Angeles area and works as a driver for a major
motion picture studio.  His first self-published work was a series of
short Science Fiction stories called The Spiderboys of Aranae, which
appeared in 2015.

In 1986, when Glenn was convinced he was at the start of a long and
prosperous career as a visual artist, an idea for a sci-fi story came to
him.  A guy loses his wife to space aliens, and he searches the galaxy
to find her.  As a fan of the genre, Glenn sat down with paper and
pencil to write the story, and two years later, No Longer Mourn for Me was
finished.  It then sat on the shelf, unpublished, for nearly 35
years.  Glenn thought about that crudely executed early work, got ideas
to improve it, and sat down at the computer for a rewrite.  The
original story was completely gutted, retooled, and reborn with a new title:
The Stars Rain Down.

A Guide for Healing and Claiming What’s Yours

Self-help, personal development, psychology, spirituality, trauma
healing

Date Published: August 5, 2024

Everything you want: all the riches of the world, the depth, beauty, the
fun.

Everything you want is in the underworld of your psyche.

This is where our capacity to experience lives.

Yet, most of us barely know what is happening in our own mind and are at
least a little terrified of who we might really be.

Just as our wishes and dreams live in the underworld of our psyche, so do
our worst fears, the things we desperately want to run from. This is the
treasure.

Our traumas, patterns, addictions, seedy desires, and repressed memories
once welcomed and transformed by the light of our consciousness give us our
greatest power, creativity, and magnetism.

This is your guidebook to your underworld that you might claim everything
that you are.

Fracture to Integration in the Psyche

It is easiest to understand this process of fracturing and integrating if we start by examining how integration happens so beautifully on its own, without our conscious involvement or effort. Consider for yourself a moment of challenge in your life that you now feel nothing but gratitude for. Look for an experience that tested you, something you felt was beyond your capacity or safety, but now it is free of fear or resentment when you think of it. Bring this experience up in your mind as we move through the stages of integration below.

The psyche goes through the following stages when separating and unifying to become more:

  1. Survival Response
  2. Surrender
  3. Rebirth
  4. Integration

Each of these stages is like an initiation to a new level of being. It could be that you went through all of this in minutes, or it could be that it took years to transition from stage to stage. In the following pages, I will outline each stage in more detail. To illustrate it more tangibly, I’ll use an example of how my own psyche and system naturally integrated an important experience in my own life: the birth of my children

chapter one

IF THERE WAS ONE thing Tammy Gail Sharp had learned over the past ten years as an Atlanta homicide detective, it was never to hesitate when facing a killer. Then what would cause her to stand there like a fool instead of pulling the trigger? Because Chip Reeker looked young enough to be her child. The child she’d never have.

The basement in the home Chip shared with his grandmother reminded Tammy of the sauna she frequented at the gym – tiny and hot enough to melt a bucket of Rocky Road ice cream in seconds. Sweat clung to her scalp, and she had no doubt her chestnut hair looked as greasy as Chip’s bleached blonde locks.

His right hand shook as it clung to the pistol. His open-mouth breathing caused his chest to move up and down. Despite his bloodshot eyes, Chip’s round face almost looked angelic as his finger twitched on the trigger of the 22-caliber pistol in his short, plump hand.

“There’s no need for anyone to get hurt,” Tammy said, her eyes working to align with Chip’s. ”Your grandmother asked me to stop by to talk to her.”

A tendon in Chip’s neck twitched before he adjusted his view downward. “She was going to fill your head with lies.”  The bulge of his throat rippled with every swallow.

She didn’t want to believe he’d shoot her. He hadn’t even been on her radar as a suspect in his father’s murder – not with his solid alibi. Now that they’d made an arrest, what could be the reason? And where was his grandmother?

This fictional tale tells the story featuring otherworldly guardians
battling malevolent creatures that manipulate the human mind. These
guardians are on a quest to save Earth, embarking on an adventure-filled
journey that explores the eternal struggle between good and evil, reflecting
aspects of human nature. The exciting thing about our book is that it
uncovers the existence of mysterious creatures living among us, who profit
from human dreams while we sleep and secretly manipulate our desires, fears,
and actions. These creatures weave a complex web of intrigue, leaving our
readers questioning not only the nature of their dreams but the forces
behind their own existence. We hope this reflection inspires our readers to
replace those forces with more positive ones.

The main message of our book to our readers is to cherish the gift of life,
nurture it, and understand that your talents can only be utilized through
the goodwill of your hearts. Love one another and sincerely wish each other
well – we are all one big family! Protect this beautiful planet; it is
our only home!

About the Authors

Dennis and Victoria Arnette, siblings who reside in a mountainous region of
the United States, have cherished outdoor activities and playing in nature
since their youth. Their childhood, marked by a joyful environment and a
close circle of friends, was filled with imaginative games where they
envisioned themselves as kings, queens, knights, and robbers. They climbed
trees, walls, and mountains, embracing every climbable challenge they
encountered. Their adventures were further enriched by various trips with
their parents. These experiences during their formative years naturally
shaped them into fun-loving, hardworking, and creative individuals with
vibrant imaginations.

Dennis and Victoria, while not professional writers, have always harbored
the ambition to collaborate on a writing project. From an early age they
were inspired by the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Their favorite
childhood moments were spent in the evenings, listening to their parents
read classic stories like “The Bremen Town Musicians,” “Snow
White,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Cinderella”
before bedtime. This early exposure fueled their longstanding aspiration to
craft a fairy tale or a fictional story aimed at an adult audience.

During the stressful period of the pandemic, they embarked on a
lighthearted project to distract themselves and bring laughter to their
family. They soon realized that this project had far greater potential than
initially expected. They dedicated themselves to creating this beautiful
book, and sincerely hope you enjoy reading it as much as they enjoyed
writing it.

An Aquatic Reckoning

Back at the dock, the fisherman hurried to the stables, paying the stable
hand four Electrotokens to rent a cart and a pair of mules to haul his catch
away. He promised to return the cart and the animals the next day.

Garwick Greedgill was thick around the midsection and had a sunken chest
and narrow frame that belied the strength of his wiry arms. His leathery,
tanned skin bore witness to many years spent on a boat’s deck under the
sun’s harsh glare. His hair was a bristly mix of silver and gunmetal gray,
poking through the many holes in a threadbare red cap embossed with the
emblem of a long-forgotten fishing guild. A heavy forehead and scowling brow
framed eyes a sickly shade of murky green, reminiscent of a polluted ocean.
His broad nose bent slightly to one side courtesy of a mishap with the sail
boom. Countless hours spent retrieving catch after catch left his calloused
hands stained with fish scales and innards as he searched for the grand haul
that always eluded him.

Garwick wore frayed puce trousers held up by a filthy, tattered flaxen rope
belt. His once-bright cerise tunic, covered in various colored patches where
he had mended it over the years, was threadbare. It hung loosely over his
prominent belly. The soles of his scuffed brown boots were worn thin,
leaving his feet vulnerable to the cold and damp. He wore a necklace of
oddly shaped stones and bones that he believed would attract good luck. The
longed-for luck seldom materialized.

Garwick drove the cart as close as possible to the bog extending beyond his
property’s edge. He lived in a ramshackle hut between the bog and a
twisting, moss-covered path that led to a meandering creek. Near the hut was
a dingy shed. Every corner held remnants of his profession—a
collection of rusty hooks, tattered nets, and an old, cracked barrel filled
with miscellaneous items of dubious worth. A box containing lucky tokens
collected over the years sat on a dusty shelf. Best of all, there was a
wondrous grimoire. An odor of decay emanated from the book’s brown hide
cover. Garwick did not mind the strange texture or unpleasant scent of the
tome. Based on today’s catch, the grimoire’s magic had already begun to
work.
