Excerpt

Although, he’d no clue what to do with her now that he’d found her.

Shouldering through the throng hovering around the hazard and vingt et un tables like London’s impenetrable fog, Simon ignored the shouts of patrons deep in their cups, the grasping hands of mistresses men liked to have by their side while they squandered their time and, often, their birthright. He disregarded the impulse to steal, then sighed and paused to filch a half sovereign resting on the baize before a boozy baron who had his hand tucked inside his paramour’s bodice. Sliding the coin beneath his sleeve, he waved off his guards with a rigid shake of his head that said, I have this. Like he’d handled the episode last night, though this time, he wasn’t expecting a fist to his face for his trouble.

But a fist to the heart was possible.

Emmaline Breslin was, like it or not, his problem.

She had been from the moment she stepped into his life, hushed presence before a lonely boy or not.

He forced aside the pinch of emotion in his gut, ignoring the emphasis he’d unintentionally placed on the very possessive his.

Halting before the cloakroom door, Simon glanced over his shoulder at the haunt who’d followed him down the stairs. An older gent, Henry, who seemed to want nothing more than someone to occasionally talk to. “No,” he whispered, “not now. Later.” Henry blinked his watery green eyes once, gave a sharp salute, then continued down the unlit hallway and out of sight. Simon snicked open the door and stuck his head inside, immediately spotting the toes of the grubby boots Emma had traveled to 1882 in peeking from beneath a puddled mound of wool and linen.

Clever time traveler, yes; able spy, no.

As he closed the door gently behind him, the air shifted, the faintest hint of rosemary and lemon capturing the dimly-lit space, shoving aside the baser fragrances of brandy, sweat and cigar smoke that had come in from the hall with him.

Halting two paces from the coat rack, Simon dragged a rickety stool over with the heel of his boot and sprawled on it. Braced his elbow on his bent knee, took a silver cufflink he’d lifted from a baron two hours ago from his trouser pocket and began to rotate it between his fingers, gaslight from the sconce above his shoulder winking off the tarnished metal. Releasing a shallow breath he cared little if Emma heard him release, he settled in. Just him, the Dark Queen of the East End and a thousand glinting dust motes. She had no idea, Miss Breslin, but he was the patient Alexander. The brother with the fiercest temper perhaps…but also the one who could wait.

He’d gladly sit all night in this stinky little room if that’s what it took to break her.

Luckily, he didn’t have to wait long.

With a scrunch of wool and linen, her head gradually emerged from amidst the rack of coats, her muffled complaint echoing off the walls. The cufflink fell still in his hand. Her hair was a marvel, a wondrous surprise every time he got a look at it. Unbound and flowing across her shoulders. Gaslight sparked off the auburn tresses, hints of ginger like the inside of a chestnut, an unforeseen blaze in the darkness. Adding to the allure, those cobalt eyes traveling the length of him, leaving fiery eruptions in their wake.

She stepped out with an impatient huff and unladylike shake of her skirts, completely giving up her ruse. She gave a bashful tuck to her hair, placing the loose strands hanging in her face neatly behind her ears. Simon rocked back on the stool, his breath stuttering. Beneath her shabby brown cloak was a gown he’d never seen. New, created for an evening event, unfinished, the ragged hem trailing along the warped floorboards, the bustle yet to be added, the final piece of the alteration process. A plunging neckline, which he didn’t need to make his life or his cock harder at the moment. The curve of her hip highlighted as she stepped forward, her long legs enchanting beneath clinging silk.

He felt the surge. Lust, umbrage, sympathy. A crushing trifecta for any man.

Silly to feel indignation when the gown was everything current style dictated. In a glorious shade he would have pegged as plum or eggplant, so opaque it was almost black, a flash of violet in the murky light.

But it wasn’t the color, although that was a dazzling choice with her creamy skin and vibrant tresses.

It was the fit.

The rags he’d seen her in had been hiding a delicious body. He longed to strip that threadbare cloak from her shoulders and slide her gown in a deliberate exhibition to her feet. Then watch her step out of the puddle of material as she crossed to him.

Caught outside his fantasy, she smoothed her palm shyly down the bodice, her glorious lips curling in what could only be construed as delight. So, she liked the new clothing. Even if she protested, which Delaney had told him she’d done. Mightily.

They stared for a long moment before recognizing the pointlessness of such an endeavor. His shaft hardened a notch further, causing him to shift slightly to hide the reaction. Her eyes were wide, so damn blue, and amazingly easy to read. Layers of pain and sorrow, and like icing topping a cake, garnished with a glimmer of hope. His heart thumped once in his chest, his erection withering.

He’d never held someone’s happiness this close—or been truly responsible.

In a way he wasn’t sure he wanted to be responsible.

Compelling him, she stared. Right at him, right though him. He hoped like hell he’d cloaked the thoughts racing through his mind before they showed on his face. He hadn’t done well hiding what being this close to her had done to his body.

Then with a daring glance, she stepped out of the shadows and into his space. Into his life. Unapologetic, fearless Emmaline. And Simon realized with a surge of some deeply held emotion that she wasn’t meant to be tamed.

Not this girl.

She would run free until a man just as formidable was courageous enough to seize her.

Shamanism in the 21st Century cover

Non-Fiction, Mental & Spiritual Healing

Date Published: June 26th, 2017

Publisher: Jan-Carol Publishing, Inc.

This book grew out of the ¬first seven years of August Lageman’s practice as a shaman. The book shows how the teachings of the Four Winds Society actually work with clients. In addition, August kept an open mind and integrated tools and insights from other forms of healing such as reiki and Holographic Healing. This book demonstrates how a person with a rocky childhood can heal from early wounds with the help of skilled shamans. August writes from his heart. You will learn how a shaman needs to be ready for the unexpected.

Shamanism in the 21st Century is as useful as it is interesting. If you’ve always been curious about alternative healing modalities or want to deepen your own spiritual connection, this book is a good place to start.” — Willie E. Dalton, Author

EXCERPT

Shaman Practice
“Raise your vibrational level; then you
become invisible to dark energies.”
—Anonymous
I
n the Four Winds tradition (Inca), the second direction is that of the west.
The power animal is the jaguar. In my first five years of full-time practice,
I have done 2,025 illuminations. I have done 775 extractions, so 60 percent
of the people I’ve worked on just needed an illumination. The remaining 40
percent needed something extracted (removed) from their energy fields.
When I work with a new client, I am always prepared to do both an illumination and an extraction. I will discuss removing entities and demons in a
later chapter. I find heavy energy and extract it into a crystal. I do not label or
diagnose what the heavy energy could be; I remove it.
Bob was a retired CPA in one of my older adult classes. I had cleared him
several times. He called and wanted to see me as soon as possible. When Bob
came to see me, he was guarding the right side of his stomach, and he asked
me not to touch it.
I did an illumination and then an extraction. I removed the heavy energy
into an awaiting crystal. When Bob got up from the table, he smiled and said
that the pain was gone. The pain was where his appendix was located. I referred
him to an herbalist to have a thorough stomach cleanse done. I then told Bob
that if he had a sharp pain in the night not to call me, but to go to the hospital
emergency room and have laparoscopic surgery done to remove the appendix. That did not occur. This happened five years ago, and the pain has never
returned. I have concluded from this and many other clients that I do my best

work in the early, preventative stages of an illness.
Janice came to my older adult class with the man for whom she was caring,
age eighty-four. Her client had frontal lobe dementia. Janice had no idea of what
energy healing was about. I sensed in her a level-four entity, which was going to
disrupt the class. I approached her, smiled, and told her that what I was going to
do would not hurt. I removed the entity, and Janice felt immediate relief.
I got to know Janice, who was a recovering drug addict. Janice asked me if
I could clear her liver. I told her that I never know anything in advance, but I
would do my best (with my awesome healing team). Janice’s MD was planning
to do a liver transplant. Her white blood cell count was at a critical level. I performed two illuminations and extractions, two weeks apart. Janice then went to
her surgeon, who found the liver completely healed and clear. The surgeon was
amazed. Her friends at her church advised her not to come to me, because they
thought I worked for the devil. The two sessions cost $50 each, a total of $100,
versus $100,000 for a liver transplant. I think I know why shamans are viewed as
a threat by the medical industry.
Some clients require repeated extractions, which gives rise to the question
of what in their diet and lifestyle is behind the issue. I was taught at shaman
school not to give a medical label to the heavy energy. This would start a negative
thought process.
Two years ago, I was teaching a non-credit adult course, which met one afternoon a week for six weeks. Adults would describe their ailments to me, about
which I would rather not know. At the last class, I asked if they would like more
discussion or free treatments. Everyone wanted free treatments.
Kay was a retired operating room nurse with an extensive medical background. Kay had not told me about any ailments. She winked at me and said, “I
do not think you can handle what I have.” After an illumination, I scanned her
body. My hand locked up over her chest. I thought, but did not say, there was
enough energy in there for three coal miners. Inside her chest, I sensed a mucous
plug. I asked one of my angels (more about them later) if I could pull the plug.
The angel replied and told me I could, and that she could then breathe. When
Kay got up off the table, she took her first full breath in years.
One month after the class, Kay was visiting her MD, a pulmonologist. He
took an X-ray of her lung and announced that his X-ray machine was broken,
because the lung was clear. I asked Kay if she told her MD about me, and she
said no and that she did not want a psychiatric evaluation. Another month and
Kay had another clear X-ray. On her third visit and final visit, Kay brought her

courage and my card with her. When Kay gave her doctor my card, he asked, “Is
he a real person?” Actually, I am a leprechaun living and working as a shaman
in Abingdon, Virginia.
Not all extractions are dramatic and life changing, but I remove from the
person what is standing in the way of his or her body healing itself. Almost
everyone arrives on my healing table skeptical. This is fine because I am used to
it. All I need is some openness and cooperation to release what is stuck in his
or her energy body.
One of these cases described under testimonials is that of a graduate student, Corey Pearson. Corey is heavily muscled with a scar from his deltoid to
his elbow from an injury and surgery that ended his career as a baseball player
for the Texas Rangers. Graduate students, including Corey, stayed after my
psychology class to see if I could heal them. I did not have to hunt for Corey’s
heavy energy. With my hands four inches above his body, I pulled; nothing happened. He was part of a group of five students. I told them not to be alarmed,
as I went into a trance and then tried again, this time with an archangel. Out
the heavy energy popped. Corey stood and rotated his shoulder three hundred
and sixty degrees, smiled, and thanked me and my angels. It is great to be part
of a healing team (all of whom will be described later).
During my first year, I had a very unusual case. Dorothy could see the energy
field around any person. Dorothy liked my energy field. Dorothy had lost the
ability to see energy in the right eye. I did an illumination first, and then an
extraction. I had healed the right eye. Four hours later, Dorothy called and told
me that many entities had come from behind that eye. I removed the entities.
This process went on three or four times a day. I lost track of the number of
entities after 20,000. I soon realized that I was dealing with a human portal.
Fortunately, at this point, I had begun to work with angels. I got an angel to sit
on the portal 24/7, until the shift or later. This stopped the flow of entities.
I had not heard from Dorothy for several months, and then learned that she
had been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility. Six months later, I got a call from
Dorothy telling me that she was out of the hospital and back home. Dorothy
thanked me for my help and patience with her.
As I graduated from the Four Winds School, I was looking forward to a
full-time practice of healing. However, economically I was not ready. I was to do
three more years of college teaching on a part-time basis. I wanted to work with
another healer. I actually prefer to work with another healer but recognize this is
not always possible.

Shaman Practice

Cords
“If you can be made to believe in absurdities,
you can be made to commit atrocities.”
—Voltaire
There are two types of cords. The first type are attachments from people
on this earth. Family, friends, and co-workers are frequently found here.
These cords are the anxious/dependent aspects of the relationships. Most of
these, but not always, are attached to the heart wall. I break them out of the
person’s energy field and simply return them to sender. Cords are also attached
to a person’s feet. This indicates a difficulty moving forward after the relationships have ended. I have learned to ask the question: Does this client have
these worldly cords. How many are there, and where are they located in the
body? These cords can reattach, but usually they will do so only if the person
has invited them back.
An example is a friend and colleague of mine, Ann, who is a Four Winds
graduate and lives in Hamburg, Germany. Ann has two adult daughters who
live in Berlin. Ann reported to me that she was unable to have any civil conversations with either daughter. I removed cords remotely. Two days later,
Ann called and reported that she was having pleasant conversations with both
daughters.
These types of cords are not limited to personal and family relationships.
An MD had twenty-seven cords connecting to his patients. A psychologist had
nineteen cords. I recently had a phone call from a woman who was not ready
to do shamanistic healing. After the phone conversation, I asked my healing
team what was blocking her from coming for healing. The answer was 87

cords connected to people. This person was living in the midst of a large tribe.
The next type of cords involves those from deceased relatives. These are
stronger, and they produce more of an energy drain on the person. Ninety
percent of the time, they are attached to the heart wall; but, as I recently discovered, they can be attached to a gall bladder or any other organ or part of the
body. Once they are removed, and I have them between my hands, I perform
a healing and forgiveness ritual and release them of trapped emotions. I then
bless the people and send them to the heavenly realm. The person feels light
and the relatives are now in heaven—a win-win situation.
One of my hopes is that a cardiologist (with an open heart) will read this
chapter and enter into a partnership with me.
Some Examples of Cord Removals
The first step is to remove them from the person’s energy field. Then with
their energy in between my hands, which are about ten inches apart, I perform
a healing ritual focused on forgiveness and release of trapped emotions. Then
each person gets an angel who escorts him or her to the heavenly realm.
People often have four or more deceased cords. Once removed, they feel
much lighter. Some of my clients have heart issues. Usually after cord removal,
their cardiologists are pleased but amazed by their physical improvement.
For instance, a phone repairman arrived to tell me of the successful repair
of my phone line. He did not look well, and he asked about my healing table. I
briefly explained what I did. The man told me he had three stents in his heart
and that they had hurt since right after breakfast. I asked if he had any other
calls, and he said no. I invited him in and did an illumination and extraction.
I extracted and crossed over six deceased relatives. He got up off my table and
was amazed at how much better his chest felt. He asked, “How do I explain this
to my cardiologist?” I replied that I did not know how to advise him on that issue. I explained that his heart had been carrying a heavy load (that of six other
hearts), and told him that he was now free.
I have also learned at school to do a decoupling process. With my hands
under the fourth and second chakras, I feel the person’s vibrations. I then use
my own vibrating energy and synchronize their second and fourth chakras. I
did this with a retired Air Force General, and his cardiologist was amazed.
I have also learned in my practice to ask if the person has had this health
issue in previous lives. When the answer is yes, I get the number and then bring
“Everything that we see is a shadow cast
by that which we do not see.”

them forward over the person’s body. Next I break the karmic bonds. This
clears the person and gives them a much better chance to successfully deal with
the heart issue in this life. I do this with any type of illness. In the past five years
of practice, I have worked with seventy-six people who have had four or more
relatives attached to their hearts.
Veterans frequently have cords. I have found that these cords generally
come from killing children. Adults killing adults happens in every war. Beginning with Vietnam, children became involved. One gunship pilot I worked on,
who had served four tours, had 2,411 black dots in his energy field. One of
the first Iraqi veterans I worked on had a ten-year-old boy attached to his heart
wall. This occurred in house to house combat. The Marine shot and killed the
adult man. As the man died, he handed the AK-47 to his son. The Marine shot
and killed the ten-year-old child. The PTSD came from violating his own moral
code and killing the child.
I have crossed over many “bad” people. The question is: who defines what
is bad? We began with individuals, such as Pakistani devil women, those in the
KGB, and unrepentant Nazis. It is not because we have a special love for these
people, but because part of our mission is to heal and clear the earth. Otherwise, these people roam the earth looking for new people to host them. Just as
our bodies have energy fields, so does the earth—and it badly needs cleaning up.
There is an enormous amount of cleanup work to be done in the “in between”
world. The energy surrounding the earth affects it very much.
Working with cords and crossing people over can sometimes produce some
weird occurrences. About four years ago, I was watching cable TV. (I no longer have cable TV, or any TV.) I was watching the History Channel, and they
announced a two-hour program on “Camp Richard,” an underground tank
factory the Nazis built inside a mine under a Czech mountain. An American
filmmaker from nearby Prague had asked guides to take him through the ruins.
I watched the entire disturbing documentary. The Nazis used concentration
camp labor. The camp was deteriorating after all these years.
In the middle of the night, at about three a.m., I was awakened by 65 laborers wanting to be crossed over; then another group, this one of seventy. I asked
if there were more; there weren’t. I opened sacred space and gathered my healing team, then proceeded to cross them over. The only connection I had with
them was that I had watched the documentary film.

Excerpt

Chapter Fourteen

Kat stopped and dropped into a crouch. She couldn’t wait another minute to loosen the laces on these blasted boots. They were starting to pinch something awful after traipsing all over Wyoming and Montana for two days. And having the time of her life, she thought with a secret smile.

Why was it that every thought of Austin seemed to be accompanied by the not-so-subtle sensation of the earth shifting?

And then she heard it. A roar that sounded like…thunder? How could that be? There wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

Kat realized suddenly that Austin was shouting her name. She could barely hear him over the odd roaring sound. She looked up to see him running toward her—and a second later she saw why.

A dozen of them, maybe more. Off to her left, careening down the hill, spilling out into the parking lot. Huge. Brown. Shaggy. Beasts. Beautiful, she thought, feeling oddly detached. They were coming straight at her.

Dear God. She was going to die.

She heard shouts…a few screams. They barely registered now. She was frozen, trapped, in a deadly tableau.

All the breath left her body as she was knocked from her feet, tackled like an unsuspecting quarterback in the final seconds of the game. Her teeth snapped together as she hit the ground. And then she was tumbling across the pavement, wrapped in a pair of strong arms, curled up against a rock-hard body that she recognized on a purely instinctual level.

And knew, somehow, that she was safe.

When Kat opened her eyes, it was to a sight she’d never thought to see. Austin’s deeply bronzed complexion was pale and drawn, as white as freshly fallen snow. His eyes were big and black and haunted in a way she would never have imagined possible. She lay sprawled across his chest, his arms clamped around her like bands of steel.

Are you—my God, Kat, are you all right?” Even his voice sounded different, scratchy and tight and sort of…wobbly.

Kat nodded, or thought she did, unsure if she was fully in control of her body or if her response was only muscle reflex.

A crowd was gathering, forming a tighter and tighter circle around them. “Hey!” A man’s face appeared in her line of vision. “You two okay? That was a close one.”

As Kat recovered her breath, she tried to push up from Austin’s chest. He was having none of it. Burying his lips in her hair, he made an odd choking sound that she didn’t have time to interpret before he rolled to his side and eased them into a sitting position.

Another crowd was milling about near the small herd of bison that had come perilously close to flattening her. The huge shaggy beasts were standing still now, twenty, maybe twenty-five feet away, snorting, pawing the ground, and eying the humans with disdain.

Austin’s arm stayed firmly clamped around her waist as he glanced up at the concerned faces hovering over them. “We’re all right,” he said. “Could everyone please stand back and give us some room.” He cupped the back of Kat’s head, searching her face, then the front of her body for any visible signs of injury. “Are you hurt?”

I..I don’t think so. What about you?” She fingered a patch of torn fabric that was sticking up on his shoulder. “Your shirt’s ripped. Are you okay?”

Before he could reply, a stern voice rang out over a bullhorn. “Get away from the bison. Stand back, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. You need to give those animals a wide berth. Sir! I’m not kidding! That bison can run thirty-five miles an hour. How fast can you run?”

Austin got to his feet, tugging Kat up with him. The ranger with the bullhorn strode over to them. “What’s going on here? You folks okay?” He was short and somewhat portly, with a full, reddish-brown beard covering most of his face.

We were caught by surprise when that bunch came barreling down off the hill over there,” Austin said.

The small herd of bison had wandered down near the far end of the parking lot, seemingly unperturbed by whatever had them in full stampede mode only moments before. There were only eight or nine of them, Kat realized now that the danger was past, though a single one of them could have stomped her into dust.

The ranger nodded and scratched his beard. “Something must have spooked them. It happens sometimes. I’m just glad no one was seriously hurt.” He turned his head and jerked the bullhorn up to his mouth. “I said stay back.” He made a shooing motion at a trio of teenaged boys who had wandered too close to the bison pack again.

Austin tightened his hold on Kat’s arm. “Let’s go.” His dark gaze swept over her again, making sure she was all right. She was achy and sore and pretty shaken up, but she was more concerned about him. He had taken the brunt of their fall and subsequent tumble, protecting her from the worst of it. She had no idea how much damage he’d sustained to his back and arms as they rolled across the pavement.

Austin had saved her life. It was a sobering thought. An amazing truth. One she didn’t take lightly. Once the reality of his heroic deed had a chance to sink in, how in the world was she going to deal with it?

My camera!” she cried. “I had the strap on my arm when I knelt down to loosen my boots. It must have gone flying when we tumbled across the pavement.”

Does this belong to you?” It was the same guy who had come up to them immediately after the incident, asking if they were all right.

Thank you so much,” she said, when he handed her the camera.

Appreciate it,” Austin said, slipping his arm around her and ushering her toward the walkway. They were almost back to the Land Rover when a pick-up truck with an official Yellowstone logo pulled up and stopped right next to them.

Well, well. What have we here?” The uniformed man inside the cab grinned at Austin through the window as he reached down and switched off the ignition. He pushed open the door and climbed out. “Everything okay?”

Even in her shaky condition Kat was struck by how much he and Austin looked alike. He was nearly as tall as Austin, with shoulders every bit as thick and wide. They had similar features, the same prominent cheekbones and ruddy complexion. Only the deep brown color of his eyes was different from the man standing next to her, keeping her clamped tightly to his side.

The ranger cuffed Austin on the back. “What’d you do, cuz? Tangle with a big ole’ brown bear up there on the trail?”

Cuz?

Austin’s only answer was a dark glower, which seemed to amuse the man even more. “Since you don’t appear to have sustained any real injuries,” the ranger said after observing him for a few more moments, “apart from a few rips in the back of your shirt, that is, aren’t you going to introduce me?”

Kat could have sworn she heard Austin growl. “Kat…this is my cousin, Dak.”

That explained a lot. “Nice to meet you,” she said. “Kat Ingersoll.” She would have offered him her hand, but Austin maintained a death grip on it.

Despite Austin’s glare, Dak brushed at some dried leaves and twigs clinging to the sleeve of her shirt. “Are you, okay?” His gaze met Austin’s again and he sobered a bit. “Seriously, you guys do look a little…scuffed up. This doesn’t have anything to do with that group of bison that wandered through here a short time ago does it? You know better than anyone, cuz, how important it is to steer clear of those critters.”

Which is why I don’t need a lecture from you. Something got into a small herd of them, and they made a mad dash down the hill. We just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. Luckily, they petered out pretty fast once they hit the pavement, and no one was injured.”

Dak blew out a sigh. “Well, that’s good then. I’m glad no one got hurt.” His lips parted in another grin. “But hey, dude…I don’t think that shirt’s ever going to be the same.”

Kat figured Austin must have shot him a particularly nasty hand gesture behind her back because Cousin Dak was laughing pretty hard as he reached for the door handle. “You staying here in the park tonight?”

Up at the inn. Where I need to take Kat so she can get cleaned up and rest a bit. It’s been a long day.”

Dak nodded and tipped his ranger’s hat, another grin tugging at his lips. “Have a good night, you two.”

Austin muttered something blasphemous under his breath as they continued on to the Land Rover, which thankfully was close by. He unlocked the door and helped her into the passenger seat. To say that she was exhausted was an understatement of major proportions. Now that some time had passed since Austin had tackled her to the ground, she could feel her entire body starting to ache. A great deal of that could be attributed to her hours in the saddle, but still. She couldn’t imagine how Austin must be feeling after taking the brunt of their tumble across the asphalt, though she knew he would never admit it even if he was in howling pain.

After shutting her door, he walked to the back of the SUV and opened the tailgate. Kat watched him through the rearview mirror as he rifled through his bag and dug out another shirt, a navy blue tee he pulled on over his head after discarding his torn one. He slammed the tailgate shut and stood with his backside leaning against the bumper.

What was he thinking? Was he blaming himself for what happened? Taking the weight of the world on his shoulders the way he always seemed to do? He had this crazy macho-man notion that everything that went wrong was his fault. She really needed to disabuse him of that way of thinking.

Kat opened her door, biting back a groan as she climbed down out of her seat and walked to the back of the vehicle. “Austin? Are you sure you’re okay?”

His gaze snapped to hers, and she could see the tortured look in his eyes. The look he didn’t want her to see. “I’m fine, Kat. Get back in the car.”

He’d never used that acidic tone with her before, as if she was the one he was mad at. Her throat felt thick with unshed tears, yet she had the presence of mind to know that it was the stress of the last half hour, the adrenaline rush followed by the aftermath of…of jumbled feelings and emotions.

Kat got back in the car. She leaned her head against the headrest and closed her eyes, kept them closed as she heard Austin’s door open, felt the SUV dip slightly when he got in.

I’m sorry.”

I know.”

I didn’t mean to snap at you. What happened—almost happened—it wasn’t your fault.”

It wasn’t yours, either.” She opened her eyes and turned to him, pushing her face close to his. “And so help me, Austin, if you start trying to take some weird sort of blame for it, beating yourself up like you did when we got caught in the rain yesterday….”

He reached over, cupping her cheek so gently in his palm that she almost lost the battle with her tears. “What, little warrior? What are you going to do?”

I’ll—I’ll think of something, don’t you worry. Now can we please get to our room? I’m running on empty here, and you aren’t doing much better.”

Yes, ma’am.” He placed a tender kiss on her lips, then leaned forward and cranked up the engine. “A hot shower, a soft mattress, and dinner in bed…how does that sound? After the way our day ended, I think we damn well owe it to ourselves.”

Kat settled in for the drive, pulling the seatbelt down over her torso. “Sounds like heaven to me. Show me the way home.”

Austin shifted into reverse and was soon accelerating down the road with renewed enthusiasm. At the risk of putting a dent in his newly-improved mood, she treated him to what she hoped was her sassiest grin and said, “So…the hot park ranger with the dreamy brown eyes? Is he really your cousin?”

Date Published: June 21, 2021

Issaquah, Washington, USA

1951

My name is Norma Mae Rollins. I’m fourteen and an illegal vampire. I miss my mom, but new ghoulish appetites force me to remain with my creator.

Bill didn’t mean to transform me. At least, that’s what he claims. His frightening temper, relentless lies, and morbid scientific experiments makes it hard to know what to believe. However, someone snitched about Bill’s experiments to a nearby coven. Now both of our corpses will burn.

Bill won’t run. He is curious what happens to a vampire after final death. I don’t want to die again. It hurt so much the first time. Bill thinks his vampire boyfriend might shelter me. I must brave an eternal existence with elder vampires and other monsters who don’t think I ought to exist. Oh and figure out who I am allowed to eat.

A vampire’s reality is nothing like the movies.

Excerpt

From the diary of Norma Mae Rollins

Icy fingers, too big to be Teddy’s, gripped my arms.

The Fuzz, I thought.

The sheriff would call Mom. I had a few sips of beer and smoked, but I wasn’t blitzed. At worse, Mom would be “very disappointed” and give me extra chores.

My feet lifted from the ground. Wind bit the bare flesh of my arms, legs, and face. Branches whipped past me in frenzied movement. Nothing made logical sense. I seemed to fly underneath the dark shape which held me. I was dropped onto the concrete floor of somewhere cold that smelled of rotten meat and filth. Fangs loomed in front of me.

Vampires aren’t supposed to be real!

I screamed and struck the vampire with my flashlight. His pale lip split open and quickly stitched back together. He yanked the flashlight from my hand. I protected my throat with my arms, because in the movies, vampires always bite people in the throat.

He punched me.

Dazed, I fell backward into a metal table. He lifted me onto it and rolled me over.

I spotted the pit half-filled with rotting bodies. Their mottled flesh twisted in bizarre angles. Cloudy eyes stared at the ceiling.

I wildly kicked backward. I felt air. I connected. He grunted and leaned one hand on my back, pressing me into the metal. With his other hand, he ripped off my shoe and bobby-sock. His fangs pierced my heel. When he reopened his mouth, he whispered something about Achilles.

I tried to lift myself off the gurney, but the vampire still had me pinned as he dictated into an old Sound Scriber.

Cold leeched through my summer blouse. My muscles ached, then spasmed. The barn spun. Darkness.

No! Mom’ll wake up…I won’t be home… She won’t know what happened. I’ll be a rotting body covered in lye.

The vampire loosened his grip to check his stopwatch. I twisted. With my uninjured leg, I kicked the vampire as hard as I could.

Freed but light-headed, I sat and elbowed him in the chest. Agonizing pain radiated into my arm. Ignoring the throbbing, I punched him in his mouth, maybe his nose. Blood sprayed onto my face. My eyes teared, burning with his fiery blood. My lips tasted like copper.

The vampire grabbed me.

With one final burst of strength, I lunged and clamped my teeth onto his hand. Salty, syrupy blood coated my mouth….

Journal of William T. Caruso

Subject 073, Adolescent Female

Method: Bloodletting though the heel

Status: Transformed

How is it possible I created a vampire from this girl when grown men have perished by my fangs?

I simply wanted to discern the rate of blood loss if I opened the posterior tibial artery near the Achilles compared to other methods. This is an unexpectable complication, but now I comprehend the pain in creating a vampire. I have created one, I can create others.

I had been hunting for suitable subjects when flashlight beams on the west side of Tiger Mountain attracted my attention. Six teenagers played in an empty field. I originally thought about taking a boy, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from Subject 073.

My mind linked with hers per the magnetic connection I share with Derrik. Another telepath? A modern teenager like her did not believe in anything beyond her human existence. Vampires were movie apparitions, superstition. Yet, she looked at the tree where I concealed myself.

Mostly her mind was full of the pleasure of girlish infatuation, but her hidden wish had nothing to do with boys. Better she be my victim than see her future dreams die long before she did. After the world squashed her, she would be a farmer like her mother. Or some idiot would drop The Bomb. Wasting such spirited blood would be a sin…
