An Excerpt from Chapter Four
Gunner
I slowly looked up to find a tall man with wavy brown hair, cobalt blue eyes, a mustache, and thick brows. His eyes had a hint of amusement, like he was waiting for me to say something. “Um…how do you know I don’t live here?”
“Well, young lady,” he said, flashing a wide grin. “This is a hotel.”
“Oh, yeah,” I replied with an awkward giggle.
“So, are you here for the writer’s conference?”
I tried not to gawk, but the man brought a lot of heat with him. “I work in publishing. I’m here from Atlanta. You?”
“Brooklyn. May I sit here?”
“S-Sure,” I said, glancing around to notice there were plenty of other seats. It only took one glance to catch the other women in the lounge ogling him. He was gorgeous — the red-carpet, leading-man brand of gorgeous. Think Tom Selleck. Robert Redford.
He held me in his stare. “Did I mention I wrote a book on how to discover a beautiful woman in a bar?”
I checked out his left hand — no wedding ring. No tan line either. “Is that why you’re here? To shop your book?”
He smiled and waggled his brows. “Passé. Don’t need it now. I’ve found the most exquisite woman here,” he said, motioning to my drink.
Heat raced through my body as I turned and discreetly dabbed my forehead with a napkin. The bartender set my fresh cocktail down along with something red for the stranger. “Bloody Mary?”
“Brooklyn Bitters,” he said, bringing the glass to his enticing lips. “Nothing like vermouth and Campari with a slice of orange. The only difference between a Manhattan and a Brooklyn Bitters is whiskey. Never understood why New Yorkers would elevate Canadian whiskey over sweet vermouth. You should try it.”
With his imposing size, muscular arms, and prominent jawline, he looked more like an Olympian than a dude from Brooklyn. “I’ll stick with mine. Thanks.”
“So,” he said. “Should I know your name?”
“I don’t know. Should you?”
The stranger leaned forward with his eyes on me. “Shouldn’t I know the name of the woman I might spend the rest of my life with?”
I nearly spewed my drink. “You’re hilarious! Keep working on that book. It’s loaded with clichés.”
“Now, you’re offending me,” he pretend-whined. “You’re not married, are you?”
I held up my left hand. “No, and you?”
“Engaged once, but it didn’t work out.” He extended his hand. “Gunner Baldwin. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
We shook hands. “Katherine Hathaway…call me Kate.”
“Interesting you’re in publishing. My mom was a writer.”
“Oh? What does she write?”
For the first time since he sat down, he glanced off with a pained expression. “Did. My parents were killed in a plane crash when I was a teenager.”
“Your parents? I’m so sorry.”
“Thank you. She wrote romance novels. Funny, here I am at a writing seminar. She used to take me to bookstores and the library. I still go once a week. Makes me feel closer to her. My mom would have loved this, mingling with fellow authors.”
“I’m sure,” I said, wishing I could think of something wise or comforting.
“Do you suppose this could be fate? How do I say this? I feel like we were meant to meet. Does that sound ridiculous?”
It did, although there were coincidences. His mother wrote romance novels and I did put that dress in the suitcase. Could this be destiny? “Well,” I answered, remembering my addiction to love stories. “I don’t know you.”
“Tell me, Kate,” he said, touching my hand. “Do you believe in destiny?”
I swallowed hard as an air bubble crept down my throat. The word destiny had been on my mind not one minute ago. “It’s possible…well, yes. Maybe.”
He swiveled and faced me with his hands on his knees. “Tell me about Kate Hathaway,” he said, motioning to the bartender to serve me a third cocktail.
He was the most breathtaking man I’d ever seen, but he was more. He had a way of caressing me without touching. The unfamiliar sensation both exhilarated and scared me. I took a long drink. “Not much to tell.”
He leaned closer.  “I feel a pull. Don’t you?”
His words sent shivers racing up and down my arms, hinting that my life might gain color and excitement. The feeling alarmed me; no way could I let my long absence from dating and addiction to romance novels derail my common sense. I straightened up and cleared my throat. “As I said, I don’t know you.”
He tilted his head back and moaned. “Oh, my God, you think I’m a stalker.”
“Are you?”
“Touché,” he replied, with a chuckle. “Not at all, but I am intrigued by you. Okay, how about this. What is your favorite music and what makes you laugh and cry?”
“Couldn’t you start with something simple like what’s your favorite hobby?” I pointed my finger in a “you first” gesture.
He cocked his head and grinned. “All right, you win. Standing in line at the DMV makes me cry, and Robin Williams makes me laugh. As far as music, I’m a rock n’ roll guy. Country too. If you lived in Brooklyn, I’d take you to La-Morz. Bob Dylan played there last week. What do you like?”
“Classical. Artists and poets inspired so much of the music.”
“Tchaikovsky?”
“You like classical music?”
He raised his eyebrows. “Do you think a guy who wears cowboy boots can’t appreciate classical music?”
“No, I didn’t mean…” I stopped and put my fingers to my lips. “Actually, I did.”
“That’s okay. Truth is, I couldn’t tell an opera from a symphony. I hear Amadeus is an interesting new musical. We should see it. Both of us appreciating music and all.”
I held the glass over my mouth to hide my smile. It seemed like we were on a first date instead of a chance encounter.
Gunner gestured for another Brooklyn Bitters. “What makes you cry?”
“Music. Every ballad I’ve ever heard makes me cry, but as far as classical, I would say Adagio in G Minor. My grandma used to play it at night. I always wondered what she was thinking about.”
“Don’t you mean who she was thinking about?”

“Ah,” I said. “My grandpa was alive, so maybe she was reminiscing about a long-lost love.”
He nodded as the bartender set down his cocktail. “Some loves get under your skin.”
“Like a bad rash?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Well, that’s awfully cynical, Miss Hathaway.”
I laughed. “But true.”
He rested his head on one hand and smiled. “If we become a couple, what would our song be?”
I glanced over my shoulder and made a face. “Are you for real? You better slow down on those Brooklyn Bitters!”
“I’m only on my second. Let’s see,” he said, stroking his chin. “Do you like the Stones? ‘Wild Horses?'”
“Oh, I love that song.”

A mariachi band took the stage, tuning their instruments. One member announced something about Latin Night and the guests clapped and whistled. Gunner put his hand over mine, which made me look at him. “Let’s go with ‘Wild Horses’ then.”
I turned to hide the goofy grin on my face.
The band played an up-tempo song as couples got up to dance. The music was boisterous and the audience even louder. “Kate! It’s too noisy! Let’s go somewhere quiet! There’s a veranda on the ground floor!”

“Well, okay. For a little while!”

Gunner bent down to whisper in my ear. “One love, one heart, one destiny.”
“Shakespeare?”
He winked and held out his hand. “Bob Marley.”
We stood in the elevator with two young women with long blonde hair and svelte figures wearing short, slinky black dresses. They huddled together, eyeing Gunner, not trying to hide it even with me standing next to him. He either didn’t notice or was too polite to make eye contact. Their bold flirtation reminded me he was movie star gorgeous and could have his choice of women — so why me?

Grace Neunaber may have everything she’s ever dreamed of, but sometimes it’s too much. With an infinite to-do list and not enough sleep, she can’t even get out of survival mode. Her struggles dim, however, in light of the challenges of her oldest daughter.
Thanks to a supportive family and boyfriend, Faith Williams is managing single motherhood on top of college plans. But when the father of her child re-enters her life, her carefully scheduled world is rocked. She can hardly blame him for wanting to spend time with their son, but making her boyfriend jealous and claiming to be Christian is going a bit far.
Despite Faith’s best intentions to keep everyone happy, disaster after disaster strikes, and school is suddenly the least of her worries. Grace must set aside her own difficulties so she can be there for her daughter. And in order to survive the uncertainties, Faith must loosen her grip on her grudges and cling to the hope that God is the only one in her life who hasn’t changed.

Excerpt

An ear-piercing shriek woke Grace Neunaber out of a dead sleep, and she groaned as she checked the time. Four seventeen. Next to her, David stirred and mumbled into his pillow, “Evelyn this time?”

Grace sighed wearily. “Yes. When will their antibiotics kick in? Charlotte was just up an hour ago. They’re going to wake up Katie too.” She didn’t make a move to get out of bed, secretly hoping David would offer this time, but her husband didn’t move a muscle. Rolling her eyes, she asked, “Would it kill you to get up with them once?” It had been eight months since the household had grown to include an additional three infants and a puppy, and it was taking its toll.

“You’re better at it than I am,” he replied sleepily. “Besides, I have a job to get to in the morning.”

Her anger flared. “While I sit in the lap of luxury at home, sipping wine and eating bonbons? No, David, I am busy all day long taking care of your children, so don’t you dare insinuate that I don’t have a job! I am drowning in the work involved in the upkeep of this house, and it’s still a mess! Most days I don’t even get out of my PJ’s or comb my hair until the girls are down for a nap. And my perpetual lack of sleep is not helping. I’m turning into a crazy woman!”

By now, Charlotte was wailing along with her sister, and Katie in the next room over was starting to whimper in her sleep as well.

“Fine! I’m up!” David shot back. “Who do you want me to get?”

“Forget it,” Grace said coldly, throwing the covers off. “I’ve got it.”

“No, I’ll come,” he sulked. “I’m awake anyhow.”

Both sullenly padded across the hall to their twin daughters’ room. Grace walked over to Evelyn and let David deal with Charlotte, who was a fussier baby anyhow. Serves him right, she thought resentfully. This is what I deal with all the time.

They calmed the babies in silence, their shushing the only sound as the girls’ fussing died down. Grace rocked Evelyn and rested her head against the cushion as she did so, closing her eyes for a brief respite. Ah, parenthood, she thought caustically. It’ll be the death of me yet.

ROMEO, ROMEO, WHEREFORTH ART THOU?
Acting jobs are scarce now for former TV teen detective Antigone Alden. So when a teaching position opens up at Southern Coastal University, Tig packs up her teenage daughter and heads home to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
The house she inherited from her mother isn’t entirely empty, however. Her mom seems stuck between this life and the next, and now Tig is a local reporter’s prime suspect in the murder of the former theater professor. Given his reputation as ladies’ man, there are plenty of people with a motive.
Tig isn’t a detective. She just played one on TV. Will that be enough to help her find the killer?
Excerpt
The discovery of Amundsen’s body meant that all of my classes were canceled. Lunch with Dean Prendergast was canceled, as well. I was perfectly okay with that since I no longer had the slightest bit of appetite.
Dr. Martin Peele arrived at Muncey Theater just before campus police, about ten minutes after Ben phoned him with the news about his junior colleague. Most of my interviews for the open position had been handled in an online video conference, but I’d met Dr. Peele in person once, when I was on campus with my mother a few years back. A short, squat man with thick eyebrows and an expressive face, he reminded me of a slightly taller and younger Danny DeVito. My first thought when I met him—aside from the fact that he had sweaty palms—was that he was tailor-made for character acting.
As soon as Dr. Peele was inside, campus police turned their questions to him, which made sense, given that I’d never even met Amundsen…well, at least not when he was alive. So I slipped out the side door with a book, in search of someplace quiet, preferably with lots of fresh air. I ducked into the cafeteria to grab coffee from the vending machine and then found an empty bench at a little park between Muncey Auditorium and the main campus. The last inch of the coffee remained in the bottom of the cup as I sat on the bench reading, so that I could bring it up to my nose and breathe it in as needed. Even a half hour later, out in the wide open where the January air carried a hint of the ocean, the awful smell from the theater remained lodged in my nostrils.
The scrappy girl detectives on Private Eye High encountered a corpse in pretty much every episode, and there were even a few cases where they stumbled upon a long-dead body. Given that the makeup department generally did an excellent job of making the bodies look real, I would have sworn that I was fully inoculated against squeamishness. But I’d never really considered the olfactory element. Murder mysteries will be much less popular if anyone ever invents smell-i-vision.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Antigone Alden. How is it that you’re in town less than twenty-four hours and we already have a dead body?”
I hadn’t heard Alicia Brown’s voice in more than twenty years, but the nasal twang was unmistakable. When I left Caratoke High School at the end of my sophomore year, after landing the part in Private Eye High, Alicia was the reigning Queen Bee-with-an-itch. She didn’t like me for one simple reason: Travis Lamm did like me. In fact, he liked me so much that we’d ended up dating for over three years, even keeping the relationship going after I was in California.
Sighing, I snapped shut the technical theater text I’d been thumbing through halfheartedly. “The body’s been in the trap room for way more than twenty-four hours, Leash.”
I didn’t even have to look up to know the expression on Alicia’s face when I pulled out the old nickname, Leash. I could picture the woman’s ferretlike nose twitch perfectly. That’s one good thing about old frenemies. You already know which buttons to push.
“You stepped right into his job,” Alicia said. “That might make some people a little suspicious. Or maybe trouble just follows you around like a bad stink. Can’t believe you’ve decided to come back and live among us commoners. Is California’s cost of living too high for washed-up has-beens?”
At that point I did look up and was surprised that the Alicia in my head didn’t look much like the one standing in front of me. Alicia’s hair was platinum now, rather than her natural brassy blonde. Two decades of tanning booths, Quarter Pounders, and cigarettes had taken a toll. Alicia now looked more like her mother, who’d sat in the bleachers at home games, than the pert and perky head majorette who had strutted across the field at halftime.
Rather than try to cover my surprise, I decided to use it. “Wow. I am so sorry, Mrs. Brown! I could have sworn I was talking to your daughter, Alicia.”
Alicia cocked her head to one side. I could almost hear the hamster wheel spinning away as she tried to dredge up a smart retort.
I decided to spare her the torment, thinking maybe if I just cut to the chase, Alicia would leave. “Did you want something, Alicia?”
“Actually, I do. I’m the lead reporter for The Clarion these days and unfortunately, my editor tasked me with writing a human-interest piece on your move back to Caratoke. Us being old friends and all. I have to get a photo to go with the article, so say cheese.” Alicia held up her phone and snapped the picture before I even had time to smile. She tucked the phone back into her little red handbag and then turned on her heel to walk away.

The Adventures of Samba Rat and Friends in Sherman the Last Dragon
Four woodland friends, Samba Rat, Peter Porcupine, Squirrely, a scout camp mascot and Cindy, a ladybug, returning home from a Spring picnic, are caught in a storm and discover a large mysterious egg hidden in an ancient tree.  When it hatches into a baby dragon, the four friends are set upon an adventure to find the little creature a home.
The four friends are joined by Kitty Joy, a young master scout, who first tracks them, then joins them on their adventure to find a mysterious sanctuary and save Sherman, the Last Dragon.
Praise for The Adventures of Samba Rat & Friends In Sherman the Last Dragon:
“I really enjoyed reading The Adventures of Samba Rat and Friends in Sherman the Last Dragon by Steven and Mary Munsie. The book is well written and very descriptive. I really liked how the plot combined many different myths in a way that makes sense. The story is intriguing and filled with action and adventure. The characters are all very likeable, and young readers will want them to succeed in their quest. They are also unique and well developed. The story is fast paced and exciting. I was hooked by the first page and I never wanted to put the book down. The story contains many adorable, colorful illustrations readers will love. I would definitely recommend this book to all children.” – Kristen Van Kampen (Teen Reviewer) for Readers’ Favorite – 5 Stars

“This is a charming piece of fiction which touches on many important themes for the characters involved. Co-authors Steven Munsie and Mary Munsie write in a highly descriptive and wordy style, so I’d say this read is more suitable for advanced readers aged eight and above, or as a read-along by an adult for younger children to fully get the best from the tale. The characters’ dialogue is lively and fun, and important issues like the value of teamwork come through as strong morals, but taught through exciting action sequences. I liked that each character of the core group had their own moment to shine where their individual skills were appreciated to solve the problems on the quest. The book really celebrates diversity and making new friends who are very different to oneself. Overall, The Adventures of Samba Rat and Friends in Sherman the Last Dragon is a delightful moral fable which I would recommend to young readers.” – K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite – 5 Stars

“In Steven Munsie and Mary Munsie’s epic fantasy novel for children and preteens, a happy group of forest friends is suddenly transformed into adventurers of the first order as they risk all to ensure the safety of the last dragonling. And, as with all epic and quest adventures, the participants are faced with all manner of challenges, dangers and outright terrifying situations. I loved watching as these four epic heroes worked together to reach their goal, each exploiting their own particular gifts to make the team’s efforts succeed. The addition of Kitty Joy, “the youngest knight scout in the entire history of scouting,” to the quest adds marvelous human dimension to the story. The Munsies’ characters are credible and infinitely fun to read about, and their plot is both sound and exciting. Mary Munsie’s watercolor and ink and wash illustrations bring the quest participants and their quest to life in magnificent fashion. Epic fantasy fans of all ages should consider giving this imaginative tale a chance. The Adventures of Samba Rat and Friends in Sherman the Last Dragon is most highly recommended.” – Jack Magnus for Readers’s Favorite – 5 Stars
