“We
belong to the earth, Lainie-Bug. We were sent here in human form for a reason.
If you don’t know what to do, then just be human.”
Right.
Like that was ever a simple thing to do.
Simple
would be finishing high school without that desolate music trickling through
the cracks in my dreams, making me too tired to study.
Simple
would be telling Noah his girlfriend smells like last week’s dim sims without
second-guessing my own reasons for not liking her.
Simple
would be keeping the mining company from trespassing on our sheep farm.
Perhaps
for a human, those things would be simple. No wonder I could never quite get
the hang of it. Then again, a simple life would have never let me feel the
flames of the sacred spinning sword, or breathe the fragrance of the Garden, or
sink my teeth into the Living Fruit from the Tree of Life…

Chapter from Songlines Book 1
High
above the ground, the Sentinel stood right on the point of the tree branch
between where her weight was supported easily and the bendy region where a
sudden movement would surely send her to her death again.
The
view was spectacular enough to distract her for quite some time, and she soaked
it in as greedily as her lungs soaked in air – scented with pine and honey and
blossoms – as she recovered from the climb. Under her feet, helpful rustling
reminded her how deeply she was loved and cherished here, as the tree began to
redirect its energy into growing faster beneath her toes, the branch thickening
and strengthening with miraculous speed. The timeless pine hungered to keep her
safe at least as much as it hungered for the sweet nectar of warm sunlight.
Deep textured wisdom flowed up through the core of its massive trunk, tasting
the atmosphere to assess her needs as well as its own.
She
brushed her fingertips across the tips of the pine needles. Their scent tripped
threads of elusive memories – Christmas trees on Christmas mornings with ACDC
echoing across the backyard and Dad yelling at Mum to turn it down and Mum
yelling back that he must be getting old and would he like a glass of sherry
and Dad teasing her back by saying he’d prefer a shandy… but those memories
were best left behind. Still, something tugged at her, from the east, demanding
her attention in a place where demands were meaningless. Something forgotten,
and uncomfortable to dwell on. Something that made her want to stay distracted
enough not to have to think about it, and death was very distracting.
Above
her head, sparrows flicked around tiny gusts of air with each wing beat,
throwing in random bursts of speed every time there was a hint of a pause in
their song like they were playing musical chairs. Smiling, she pulled a
slightly squished piece of Fruit from where it had been tucked under her belt,
and then she launched herself from the branch, up towards the graceful sky.
Adrenaline
washed away her lingering discomfort as she plummeted past the base of the tree
and down into the rocky gorge that it leant out over. Remnant reflexes from
another world caused her to gasp, and for a second her limbs became rigid in
response to her body’s perceived danger, but that only lasted for a few moments.
She inhaled sweet life to drown the memories, and then let her breath out again
with a laugh as she noticed the sparrows trying to follow her, unable to fall
nearly as well with their hollow bones. Poor little things. Spreading her arms
and legs in glorious celebration, she flew downwards faster than she could move
in any other game, wishing she could somehow break the laws of gravity and move
even more quickly. Except then it wouldn’t last as long. As it was, the ground
was rising up far too rapidly. She would have to ask around to see if any of
her friends knew of anywhere higher to jump from. They would laugh at her
childishness, but to them she was still a child, and they loved to indulge her.
Below,
the River sparkled, its curved body growing fatter as she approached it. The
darker blue of its deepest pool called to her like a lover ready to fold her
into his arms, and tears fell through her laughter. In her blurred vision, the
River became a spiral of blue, curling around a plain brown shell. Lost. She
had lost it, so long ago, and with it she’d lost her lover’s embrace. As she
hit the water with explosive force, bones broke, bruises blossomed like tulips
at dawn, and the piece of Fruit she had been clutching floated away from her
limp fingers.
By
the riverbank, a tall Tree swayed in the gusty breeze, scattering out a flurry
of dry leaves. A little while later, after the Sentinel had been found by her
friends and had tasted life again, a silver branch cracked and

Dax, low status and a non-conformist, is stuck in the middle of the unending aliens wars. It’s 2187, and Earth has the Katarga trapped on the moon, refusing to allow them to escape. Then there are ongoing threats from the Piltrak and Jurale, which forces Global Command to recruit 15-year-olds like Dax, as soldiers. She never imagined she’d be advanced as a soldier, yet she was hand-picked by gruff Commander Viteri and taken from her parents, never to see them again. She doesn’t want to kill aliens, and suspects there’s more to the wars than keeping the aliens at bay. The problem is, she has to find a way to stay alive long enough to reveal the truth.

Excerpt

How did this happen? I can’t believe I’m strapped into this seat like a prisoner. I’m being sent away to die and if I don’t find a way to escape, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. All I want is to be back home, wrapped up in my blanket like this never happened. But it did, and the stale air in this shuttle is making me sick. The transportation shuttles back home never felt this suffocating. This is the worst day of my life.

Everyone needs to stop staring at me like I’m a pariah. Especially Commander Viteri. Those close-set eyes of his are boring into mine, and I know I should look away, but I won’t. I won’t give him the satisfaction of seeing how scared I am. He told Ma and Da that I’m a non-conformist, well then, how’s this for non-conforming. Go ahead and glare at me, I refuse to flinch.

His hatred is burning into me. He looks at me like I’m nothing, a stupid Single, the only child in my family. But why should that make me less than the Multiples, and who decided that being a Single was a stigma anyway. Ha! He looked away first. Sure it’s because he brought up a projection in front of him, but it still feels like a little victory.

Lenora Averlowes is on my left. I remember her from school, but we were never friends. She’s popular, taller and prettier than me. Even her shiny auburn hair is better than my dull brown. And she’s not a Single. She has a lot of siblings. She hasn’t said a word to me and I know why. I’m nothing to her. I completely forgot that we have the same birthday, but I do remember that she volunteered to be advanced. Hard to forget, because she let everyone at school know, bragging like it made her special and better than those of us who didn’t volunteer.

“Hi, Lenora, I’m not sure if you remember me, but I’m Dax.” I’ll shake her hand and be friends, if she wants to.

Look at her pulling away, repulsed by my offer of friendship. I should have known.

“I know who you are. You’re a Single and your parents are poor. And you talk too much about things you shouldn’t talk about. I don’t want you talking to me.” She turns away.

There are a few chuckles from the other kids, some I know and some I don’t, and a few of them strain against their seat restraints like they want to get further away from me. So much for making friends.

“Orwan!” booms Viteri, staring right at me. He’s out of his seat, holding onto a strap attached to the ceiling. “There’s no talking on the shuttle! You’ve just brought on the first behavior modification.” He touches a small metallic box attached to his belt.

Immediately, there’s a stinging jolt that goes through my feet all the way to my head. Apparently everyone got the same shock because they all jump and cry out as well. My fingers and toes are tingling. Viteri sits again and goes back to scanning through the projection.

Lenora glares at me, her bottom lip trembling. Her voice is barely above a whisper, “I knew you were trouble. Behavior modification before we even get to camp. Who’s ever heard of that? I’m going to be made a Lead at training camp and I’ll make you pay for this.”

The other recruits nod and scowl at me.

How does she know she’ll be a Lead? I thought ranks were given out at the camp, not ahead of time. It doesn’t matter to me though, because I’ll be slated to spend the rest of my life, however long that might be, fighting the Katarga aliens on the moon, unless I can find a way out of this. All Singles go straight to the moon and are never heard from again. Everyone knows that. I wish I never had to turn fifteen and go through my Date of Fate. I wanted to stay home and get a job, not get advanced into the Global Forces.

Soldiering is a world I know nothing about. All I have left are my memories of home. It seems like forever ago, but it was just this morning that I woke up and smelled the wonderful buttery aroma of birthday cake baking. Ma must have saved for weeks to buy eggs. Before it came out of the oven though, Viteri showed up at our door.

That was the moment my life changed. He ordered me out of my bedroom and made me stand against the wall in our tiny living room. He’s so big, he took up most of the room and made Ma and Da look incredibly small with their heads drooped down. That’s something I’ll never forget because they looked defeated. I’ve never seen them like that. Even with us being poor and low status, they always had hope and made the best of things. That hope vanished this morning though and that’s what scared me most.

Discoucia cover

Discoucia by Nicholas Lovelock

Summary
Revolution, romance and technological wonders are all in a day’s work for the decorated hero of Alavonia, Sir Arthur Pageon.

An acclaimed explorer and inventor, Sir Arthur Pageon takes his unofficial role as defender of the realm of Avalonia very seriously. A fantastical world, Avalonia is home to the Discoucian Monarchy, as well as monstrous creatures and secretive academies for the highly gifted.

Upon returning from his most recent exploits aboard on his personal flying galleon The Nostradamus, Pageon is treated to a hero’s welcome and celebratory procession through the streets of Avalonia’s capital, Evermore. Little does Pageon know he’s being followed by a mysterious group known as the Purple Guard, whose devious leader is his estranged sister, Queen Lily Pageon of Harrha Island. Fiercely intelligent, Lily specialises in dastardly technological inventions with the aim of bringing down the Discoucian Monarchy so that she may reign as its dictator. However, the heir to the throne is one Princes Josephine Oladine, whose youth and royal position masks her role in the Discoucian Secret Service.

Joining forces, Princess Josephine and Sir Arthur’s adventures will take them across the whole of Avalonia — from the fog-bound shores of Karga, to the secret underground shanty town beneath the frozen prison of Icester, south to the verdant city of Proceur and from there to the affluent Starfall Academy — in their quest to foil Lily’s revolutionary plans.

Gemenicia by Nicholas Lovelock

Summary:
The second part of Arthur and Jo’s strange adventures throughout the land of Discoucia, and a time when Archie the Water Goddess has made the ultimate sacrifice to rid the world of her nemesis, Cordelia Paradise, the Fire Goddess.

However, things rarely go to plan and Arthur finds himself at war with Archie’s hidden agenda rather than the insane task that he has to help Archie complete.

Hidden around Discoucia in its sixteen major cities are sixteen gems that Archie must collect before a year is up. If she wins then Cordelia will disappear to another dimension and not return until she agrees to stop causing forest fires, volcanic eruptions and droughts.

Team Archie has Arthur and Jo, who both have the understanding that by collecting these gems a natural order can be brought back and maybe Jo’s father will get well again. Team Cordelia has Alicia May, who has a talent for becoming anyone and a deep malicious streak; and Iren, who has a fanatical hatred for Archie, which Archie herself doesn’t like to talk about.

Along the way they meet old friends and old enemies, as well as Archie having to perform miracles without the use of divine power. From the murky ruins of Tanalos to the haunted corridors of Ashin Dance Academy, the frozen caverns of Icester and the verdant streets of Proceur, the adventure will take them around Discoucia and beyond, unless Cordelia and Alicia May can stop them first…

Author Information

Nicholas Lovelock lives in a small village in Oxfordshire and has already published Discoucia, the first part of the Alavonia Series which spans multiple novels set to be released in the future. He enjoys riding around the countryside as well as illustrating his own works, as can be seen in his second novel Gemenicia. These Illustrations in stark black and white provide a glimpse into the world of Alavonia and how he sees it, as well as showcasing the different locations and characters that make up the Alavonia series universe.

He is a keen musician capable of playing the electric guitar as well as the acoustic and the piano, often trying to play like his musical heroes David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and Jeff Lynne. His coin collection has transformed from a hobby to a passion and obsession as he attempts to collect one of every issued coin in Great Britain. He is over halfway in that respect collecting such treasures as a 1675 Charles the Second Crown and an extremely rare Edward the Seventh Half Crown of 1905, and has begun metal detecting in an effort to tick some boxes in the Hammered Coinage section.

His love of Steampunk literature and cinema has been with him from a young age when he first saw the film ‘Wild Wild West’, sought out the original series and discovered a world of fantasy that he has painstakingly tried to pay homage to in his novels, to bring the wild west to an English setting and to create something that has never been done before.

History has always been a major passion of his as he makes many references in his literature, from characters whose personalities resemble those of eccentric historical characters or monarchs. The ability to change history through literature was one of the things that attracted him to become an author in the first place, to create similar timelines and put a unique spin on the mundane.

Gone…but never forgotten.
Ever since a devastating family tragedy seventeen years ago, Grace Bighill has struggled to keep her remaining family from falling apart. Then the discovery of her mother’s body in the woods unearths a connection to a decades old murder case, and Grace is dragged into a politician’s bitter bid for revenge.
Constable Mike Davenport’s days in Aspen Lake are numbered. He’s ready to take his next step up the career ladder somewhere a lot more cosmopolitan. He’s avoided any emotional attachments, despite having fallen hard for a certain stubborn local. But when a body turns up, Mike’s careful intentions collapse in the face of Grace’s grief and her exhaustive efforts to care for her family.
A search for answers leads Grace and Mike down a twisted path proving no one can escape their roots. But someone might die trying.

Excerpt

The music still played but no one listened. They were too busy trying to talk at once.
Mike settled in beside her and his disapproving green eyes scanned her face. He lifted the cloth covering her knee and winced. “You okay?”
Grace flinched as his fingers did a gentle probe. “Welcome to the party.”
“Seems we were a little late getting our invitation.” His expression turned serious. “This may need medical attention.”
“It’s just a scratch.” She tamped down the gooey need threatening to overtake her. Tried to remember it didn’t pay to get sentimental over this particular man.
Her reassurance didn’t stop him from carefully dabbing at her cut. Or from leaning in to get a closer look. “I don’t see any glass, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any in there.”
“I’m fine.” She braced her hands on the floor ready to lift herself up, having had enough attention and being at the center of it.
Mike put his hand on her shoulder and coaxed her back down. “There’s no rush. Take a moment.”
She warmed under his touch and the tender concern she’d secretly, and not so secretly, yearned for since he’d arrived in Aspen Lake two years ago.

Research assistant Sarah Mackenzie enjoys collecting information for her uncle’s local history projects. But when she stumbles upon an open grave in Cornplanter Cemetery, she’s startled to find the body reminds her of someone she knew, someone she believed died ten years ago. Like opening Pandora’s Box, the discovery is full of unpleasant surprises and definitely not the kind this researcher likes to collect. To make matters worse, the local sheriff has learned about Sarah’s strained relationship with the victim, and the clues drop one by one to shift suspicion to her as the favored suspect. As the murders escalate and one becomes three, Sarah confronts her fear and searches for the truth, venturing into the world of Seneca Indian culture. Confronted with mysteries from the past as well as the present, she must find their common link in order to discover the identity of the Grave Maker and stop his killing spree.

Excerpt:

Speeding around the curve, I passed Egypt Hollow Road. Twenty minutes to go—less, if I took the road at a reckless pace. I moved my foot to break. It wouldn’t help anyone if I ended up in a ditch. And, of course, I’d be the fool if all that greeted me was a hot meal, a happy dog, and Chaz back to crabby. Most likely, it was nothing. Just one of his sentimental, sullen moods when he dwelled on the past and told me stories about everyone he missed. That mood. It happened on occasion. After a bit, he’d drift back into his old self.

The truck bounced as I pulled into his drive. It was weed covered with plenty of chuckholes and little gravel. Chaz stopped his regular routine of yard maintenance over eight years ago, and I had little time to help. Once the truck ground to a stop, tires hit the railroad tie put there to block anyone from driving closer. I jumped out and landed with both legs running toward the door.

“Uncle Chaz! Opal!” I bounded up the stairs and shoved the door open. “Oh, my lord.”

I hurried to the wheelchair. Chaz’s body was slumped over. Reaching down, I placed two fingers on his neck and found a pulse, weak but still there. Blood trickled down the back of his neck. I winced when my fingers located the lump on the top of his head. “What happened to you, Uncle?” I whispered.

At the sink, I wet a towel to clean the wound. Without giving too much thought to the idea, I reached for the bottle of Wild Turkey and poured some onto the towel and then applied it to his head.

“Ouch! What in holy saints are you doin’? That burns like Hades,” Chaz growled and sat up straight.

“Oh, thank you, God.” My legs gave way and I landed in the chair next to him. My eyes widened. The table was empty, cleared of all his papers and books. “What did you do? Clean house?” I stared, baffled. “What’s going on?”

“I was robbed, that’s what.” He touched the top of his head and grumbled a few expletives.
