Heart pounding, I panted breathlessly, “Cole! I’m-I’m not who you th-think I am!” I scraped his scalp with my nails, bowing sharply beneath his mouth. Oh, sweet Jesus, he was going to kill me with pleasure!
Breathing hard, he pulled his mouth off my nipple and looked up at me with surprising clarity in his eyes, his dark expression stamped with raw arousal. “I know exactly who you are,” he grated hoarsely. “I’ve known since I pulled you beneath me.”
What? I took a second to process what he’d said, or to at least try. I was so turned on that it felt as if I were on some life-altering drug, and I was, in a way–I was high on Cole. “We-We can’t do this,” I whispered, while at the same time asking myself why it was that we couldn’t.
His grin was pure sex. “Looks like we are.”
“But . . . you thought I was someone else,” I reminded him. “What about her?”
He released a frustrated breath. “Can we talk about this later? I’m right in the middle of something.”
I was not going to be a convenient fill-in for another woman, no matter how turned on I was. No matter how hot Cole was. “Listen, jerk, when a man makes love to me, I’d at least like to know that he knows it’s me he�s making love to.”
His body vibrated with laughter against me. “I don’t make love, baby. I fuck.”
I felt a surge of anger in response to his flippant attitude. “Well, then find someone else to fuck,” I hissed, trying to wiggle out from beneath him. Cole was a big man, and he was heavy. Bumping my hips to try to force him to move proved to be a dumb move, because all it managed to do was reveal how fucking huge and hard his cock was.
Cole grunted in response and dropped his head back onto my breasts. I began to wiggle wildly, afraid of where this was going.
Afraid of myself.
“Get off!”
“Jesus, wait a fucking minute, will you?” he growled as if he were in pain, pressing my body down to hold me still.
I stilled. “I’ll give you ten seconds.”
His mouth was against my breast, and the feel of his smile on my flesh caused a shiver to ripple through my body.

Robert
M. Brantner is currently working as both a captain and a line check airman for
a major US airline.  He started his
flying career as a bush pilot in Alaska, which later led to a job as a pilot
for Trans World Airlines.  He spent four
years with TWA before he landed his dream job, working for the airline he flies
for today.
Bob
was born in Southern California and attended high school there before heading
to Arizona for college.  After graduating
from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he moved to Alaska when he got his
first flying job as a bush pilot.  During
his time in Alaska, Bob first tried his hand at writing, penning a memoir on
his experiences flying Cessnas in the untamed Alaskan wilderness.                        
​All throughout his flying
career, Bob continued to write.  He
penned several (unpublished) manuscripts.
It was after Bob’s completion of Claus: The Untold Story of Kris
Kringle, that he decided to work with his younger sister (and editor), Taylor
Brantner, on cleaning up the story until it was fit for publication.  After some success with Claus, Bob dug out
his previously edited (however, unpublished) manuscript of Five Hundred
Feet.  He teamed again with Taylor and
re-edited the material.
​Bob is a certificated
Airline Transport Pilot and is type rated in the Beech 1900, Boeing 737, 757,
767, Airbus A320 and the DC-9.  He is
also a rated Flight Engineer.  He also holds
a commercial sea plane rating that he obtained in his time in Alaska.
Five
Hundred Feet Above Alaska is Bob’s third published book.  He wrote the afore mentioned Claus, as well
as My Year as an Alaskan Bush Pilot, a non-fiction account of some of his
experiences flying in “The Last Frontier.”
 Bob is married to Kelly Kaczka Brantner and
they have one daughter, Madison, and a dog, Fergus.  They live just outside of Annapolis,
Maryland.

Chapter 2
“Are
you Forest Water?” I whispered.
She
nodded, a hint of surprise in her expression.
“Was
that your husband?” I said.
Her
answer was a tired sigh.
“Were
you visited by a white-haired woman a few minutes ago?”
“I
warned Old Grandmother to stay away. You must also.”
“But…”
She
laid the baby on the blanket, got to her feet and pushed a narrow door open at
the back of the hut where I’d first entered. She slipped outside, returning
with a fig in her hand.
“You
must eat this and travel through the doorway,” she said, placing it in my hand.
“I
have so many questions.”
She
locked eyes with me as though trying to look into my soul. Having apparently
come to a decision, she squatted beside the blanket, folding it back to reveal
a layer of pine straw. Scraping the pine straw aside exposed the lid of a large
metal box. She lifted the heavy lid and pulled out a leather pouch. From the
pouch, she withdrew a book, opened it and ripped a handful of blank pages from
the back. She stuffed the loose pages back inside the pouch, returned it to the
box, closed the lid and covered it with the pine straw and blanket. Then she
handed me the book.
“You
must go,” she whispered, eyes blazing.
“But…”
She
gestured for me to put the fig in my mouth as she tugged the shawl from my
shoulders.
I
reluctantly placed the fruit between my teeth and passed through the small
doorway.
Dizziness
overwhelmed me as the buzzing in my ears returned, momentarily blocking out all
other sound. I found myself standing in the clearing, the fig half-chewed in my
mouth. I whirled around to discover the hut no longer existed. My muscles felt
as though I’d run a marathon. Not willing to trust my wobbly legs, I remained
motionless, dazed by what had just happened.
There
were two possibilities – the figs contained some kind of psychedelic substance,
causing me to have the same hallucination Nana had, possibly by virtue of power
of suggestion. Or I had traveled back in time. Which was so freaky that my skin
tingled. In my business, skepticism was ingrained. I wasn’t easily taken in by
a ruse. What I thought had happened could not possibly be the truth.
I
looked all around the clearing for the young woman who called herself Forest
Water. Then, to be sure the shack didn’t still exist, I walked back and forth
over the spot where it had been. There was nothing there.
Then
I remembered the book. It was solid in my hands, the brown leather smooth to
the touch. The book was real. The place was real. And as much as the rational
part of my brain rebelled against the idea, I knew I had somehow visited the
past.
Suddenly
impatient to know the story of the mysterious dark-haired beauty, I made my way
to a large rock on the riverbank. I untied the strap holding the book closed
and opened it with care. So many words, perhaps written with a fountain pen or
a quill, the letters sometimes puddled with excess ink, sometimes as thin as a
strand of hair. The ink was black, the paper a cream color and rough to the
touch. But the words were not in English. I had no idea what language or
alphabet I was looking at. Some of the letters were familiar, but many looked
like Arabic or Greek.
Carefully
flipping the pages, I discovered the entire book was written in this foreign
language. Completely inaccessible to me. I had to talk with Nana.

Connie
worked for many years as a radio reporter and news anchor, with a couple of
brief forays into TV news along the way.
Her experience as a journalist shows up in some of her novels.  She also dabbled in acting in college and
community theater. She uses those experiences in some of her books as well.
Her
novels are fast-paced stories featuring young women facing serious challenges
set against the backdrop of some thorny issues. She writes time travel, magical

Growing
up, she was a middle child and lived in Japan and Okinawa where her Army dad

I hate to do this, but I am willing to let him go, with no charges if you can
convince him to be an informant for me.”
“Excuse
me?” Dex’s father responded, irritated.
“I
know why you are here. Also, who you are working with and you are playing a dangerous
game. I will stay out of that, but, your son is in the position to shed some
light on this case and help your cause. There is something going on with the
sports teams at that school. Kids going missing at the top of their prime, it’s
frustrating we don’t know why.”
“I
understand, but why would I put my son in danger to get you your answers?”
“Because
it may help you get the answers you seek…for The Vigilant,” Detective Whalen
whispered when he mentioned the last word.
“I’m
not doing that. Would you put your kid in that kind of danger?”
“I’ve
tried, but my son wasn’t good enough to be recruited by the elite on the team.
He’s into other things, playing the guitar in a band. The Soul warriors have to
be selected, it’s a process. Your son, he’s got what they are looking for, he’s
strong, a bit impulsive, a fighter and not a detective’s son.”
Dex
almost didn’t catch it, but had leaned in to hear every bit of their
conversation.
“How
about this, you put things in motion, my son doesn’t know he may be exposed to
the information you seek. Let things play out, then if you need to question
him, I’ll make sure he’s available for that.”
There
was a pause of silence, “That’s fair and a good approach. The less he knows,
the more likely he will be exposed too. You’ve got a deal.”
“And
detective, don’t ever mention The Vigilant in my presence again. You can get my
family and I killed if you do, and I fought too damned hard to be able to live
to risk someone putting me and mine in danger.”
“Understood.”
Dex
heard a slapping of hands and supposed they were shaking hands.
“Now,
detective, can I see my son?”
