The protagonist, Mitchell Weaver, is a young Emergency Medicine doctor. Mitchell has entered a high stress, distinguished profession with the burden of a variety of particularly disturbing personal demons that he must battle every day in order to maintain the facade of sanity and control. The second instalment of the series, Volume +1, documents Mitchell’s state of mind as he tries his hand at decency and sobriety. Whether he finds himself at his job in New York or volunteering in the Dominican Republic, he struggles to suppress hedonistic urges and restructure awed philosophies. Although his attempts to gain control of his life are genuine, the question remains, “Is Mitchell gradually gaining control or is his life slowly falling apart.”

Health and the human condition… We are born, we get sick, and lamentably, one day it all will end. It is unfortunate but true. In between hello cruel world and the grand finale we deal with health concerns that sometimes make us feel as if the grand finale maybe upon us and so we visit the Emergency Department for help. I am an emergency medicine doctor and as an emergency doctor my job is to find the sick person, the person that actually may be approaching their final pause, and do my best to pump the brakes on the momentum of the approaching inevitable end.
People come to the emergency department because they have nowhere else to go to address health concerns, whether it is a runny nose or a stroke. I am trained in treating emergencies so it’s my job to find the emergencies. Thankfully there are infinitely more runny noses than strokes so my job is basically finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. And so my experience in the Emergency Department reflects the cyclic process that is hours of wading through eminently stable patients which are abruptly interrupted by undergarment soiling episodes of stabilizing some unfortunate soul during their battle with the grim reaper. In the latter instances, the staff and I generally can stabilize these unstable individuals only to start the cycle again. The emotional see-saw nature of working in the Emergency Department is one of the things I love about my job and also one of the elements of the job that I try to capture in my book, Preceded by Chaos Volume +1.
My experience in emergency medicine is special in the since that I am a travel doctor. I travel to areas within the country that can’t staff their emergency departments. So aside from feeling the baseline gratification I feel for the helping individuals with their medical issues, and that most physicians feel, I also get the satisfaction from the feeling of knowing that I am contributing to helping to fill a community’s need for health care providers. With an unquenchable wanderlust I frequently travel for recreation but I am also extremely fortunate that my job allows me to frequently travel to places in the United States of America that I wouldn’t necessarily choose to visit were it not for work. Travel and exploration is important to me and this is also a concept which is part of my series, Preceded by Chaos, and certainly a part of the main character’s (Mitchell Weaver) journey.
