The Taste of Her Words cover

Title: The Taste of Her Words

Author: Candace Knoebel

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About The Taste of Her Words:

Andrea was my first taste of love.

She was there throughout my childhood and into adulthood. Her words were a secret I wasn’t supposed to know. Truths and pain bled onto papers that shredded my innocence and carved a hole in my heart only she could fill.

Her words were my first kiss. They were the uneven breaths I took when I saw her, and my hands between her thighs inside the dreams she haunted. She was my best friend’s older sister and, even though she didn’t know it yet, she was the pen that would ink our destiny into the stars.

Dean tempted me to cross a line I never thought I would.

It had been so long since someone looked at me the way he did. Five years since his starry gaze caressed my words and I ran from a kiss I couldn’t shake. He was everything I should stay away from, but how could I resist the beautifully broken man whose touch stoked a fire within my soul?

Dean was the missing words to my fairy tale. The parchment I could safely put my most intimate thoughts to. But when secrets from the past catch up with us, how could our perfectly plotted ending survive?

(Danica Vargas is in the hospital after being hit in the head by a baseball at local game. Danny, the sexy indie baseball player, whose ball hit her, is in her hospital room.)

Didn’t he know she didn’t take the accident personally? Danica shifted under the covers. “I’m going to be okay. Really, I am.”

“I called from the dugout,” he explained, shaking a strand of dark hair from his eyes. “I couldn’t leave the game, but I called the hospital to make sure you weren’t—hurt worse.”

“I guess that’s why they call it a foul ball. Super foul.” Danica stuck out her chin, happy to lighten the subject, and amazed at how much having him in the room lifted her mood. She almost laughed at the word “moo-d,” and decided whatever meds they gave her made her punchy. Hell, this guy could possibly be a hallucination.

“It wasn’t a foul ball.” He shocked her with a flash of perfectly straight teeth.

Shit. She hadn’t even seen him smile until now. She felt guilty checking him out, and knew she should probably be resting but… alone in the sad room, with him taking up most of the space, she couldn’t help herself. Head injury or not, he was ridiculously handsome.

“The ball was good, in perfectly fair territory.” He mimicked swinging the bat all the way through. “It was my best hit. My first home run of the season, and I hit it out of the park.”

“And I caught it.”

“And I’m going to make it up to you. I promise you I will, Danica.”

Who is this guy?

“Knock, knock,” the tall nurse taking care of her, bellowed from the doorway, bearing a large, metal tray full of plates. “Party’s over, Slugger. Time to get your buns in gear and out. I promised you five minutes, and you got fifteen.”

Danica’s stomach rumbled in response to the mouthwatering garlic and butter aroma filling the room, and the sight of steamed mussels. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d eaten. Did Lulu arrange a delivery from her favorite restaurant, The Girl and the Fig? What did she ever do to deserve a landlord, a friend, like Lulu? She’d call her tonight and thank her.

Danny glanced between the nurse and Danica. “I could stay? Maybe help feed her?

“Nice try, but that’s not happening.” Raising her eyes to the ceiling, Tall Nurse heaved a loud sigh.

“I better go, then.” He eyed Danica. “Will you miss me?”

“Move on out, Mr. Danny Deep, visiting time is over.” The nurse shifted the tray of dishes in her hands.

“Danny Deep?” Danica studied him again, this time with her reporter hat on. “Really?

He shrugged. “That’s what they call me.”

“Do you have a card? I work for the Napa Register. My next project is an article on the Crushers, and—”

“And now, you’re working? Your brain needs rest.” Tall Nurse marched into the room. “Just settle it right down, here. I’m serious. He’s got to go.”

His delicious gaze didn’t move from Danica’s face, but traveled from her eyes to her mouth and back. He reached into the back pocket of his uniform without looking away, pulled out his wallet, and took a card from it.

“You know where to find me if you lose this card, Danica.” He waved it from across the room and placed it on the table next to a straw bag. Instead of heading to the door, he strutted to the bed just as Tall Nurse pulled the rolling bed table over and set down the tray.

“Time’s up.” Tall Nurse swatted at him. “Get away from my patient,” she scolded in a teasing voice and leaned over the bed, blocking him from Danica.

“Just one more thing, it’ll only take a sec, I promise.” He flashed a smile at the nurse that he must store in his other back pocket to use in case of emergencies, because it worked like a charm.

The nurse placed the tray on the bed and reluctantly stepped back. “Go ahead.” She folded her arms, watching him lean over the bed and maneuver around the steaming dishes.

Danica didn’t have the strength for this, and pulled a deep breath. He shot her a fiery gleam under thick black lashes and moved closer.

His breath caressed her cheek and she closed her eyes. There was only so much a girl with a head injury could handle.

“Now, don’t forget me, Danica.” His voice rumbled through her, and he brushed his nose against the side of hers. If she moved a fraction of an inch, her mouth would touch his. She held her breath, and her heart suspended in midair while his lips trekked slowly up from her mouth and over her nose, to finally land a kiss on her forehead.

Yeah, right, as if she could ever forget something like that.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I thought he was going to kiss me again when he leaned in. I wanted him to so badly. Maybe even wanted him to lay me down and take me here, in this tree where it all began, but he kept leaning and reached into the hole of the tree, pulling out the plastic box that held the words from my past. I watched him as my pulse pounded in my wrists. As he lifted the lid off and then shuffled through the folded shapes of papers.

“Here,” he said when he found what he was looking for. “This was my first taste of you.”

I took the unfolded piece of paper from him.

“Read it out loud. I want to hear your voice paint the words,” he said, seducing me with his lips and his eyes. His scent I swore I’d never forget. Heat and need flowed from every pore.

Spill into me, until all my holes are filled,” I recited, nerves flitting around in my body.

I looked over at him, at the danger in his eyes, and felt myself falling further and deeper than I ever fell. I’d never shared my words with anyone but him, and this was so much more than a touch or a kiss. This was his mind peeking into mine. His lips caressing my thoughts.

“Keep going.”

Intimacy stained his voice, the simple words taking on the shape of his body hovering over mine.

He took the lidded box from my lap and set it beside him. I watched. Not moving. Not breathing as his hand skimmed up my leg, following the curve of my inner thigh.

I couldn’t think straight.

Numb and spinning, make me feel.” I blinked fast, trying to catch my breath as his hand made its way between my legs, pressing firmly against me.

“Take your shirt off,” he commanded as a light drizzle started overhead, our breaths heavy and eager. It pattered against the tin roof, dulling the thudding sound of my heart beating in my ears.

Eyes locked on his, I took my shirt off, the cool from the rain a stark contrast from the heat brewing inside me. If he touched me, that would be it. I’d lose it.

This was a new layer of Dean I’d never experienced. The predatory look in his eyes immobilized me as I waited impatiently for his next move. For his perfect command.

I made mistakes. Too many to tell.”

He traced the outline of my breasts, making my skin tingle. Moved closer until I was on my back, the paper gone somewhere beside me.

Spill into me, until I love myself,” I finished, desire coating my voice.

He sealed the words with his lips, running his tongue over mine, tasting them. Loving them as his thumb traced the contour of my jaw. His breath was warm and filling as he took his time kissing me. Filling me and all my holes one kiss at a time.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Colt banged his fist against the door, fear and the smallest bit of hope punching through him. “Answer the fucking door,” he snarled. “Open, or I kick it in.”

“Maybe you should take it down a notch.” Next to him, Brooks shoved an agitated hand through his hair, his Stetson held loosely at his side.

“And maybe you should be freaking out more.” One of their best friends had been holed up in his home for weeks, refusing to talk to anyone, to see anyone. Colt didn’t know exactly what his friend was going through, but he’d lost a lot of damn friends in the sandbox and the only woman he’d ever loved had died too. Something he couldn’t think about right now. He couldn’t focus on his own pain when he could help his friend, when he had a damn purpose.

Mercer had recently lost his wife, and the man wasn’t handling it. The guy had been in love with Mary Grace since he was fifteen. They’d been each other’s world. And two months ago she’d been killed in Mexico, a victim of cartel violence. Allegedly.

Colt hadn’t been in love with Skye since he was a kid, but eight months with her sure felt like a lifetime. Hell, when she died it felt like he’d lost part of himself. The only part that mattered. He had to force himself out of bed every day, to shove back the emptiness. So on one level, he understood how Mercer felt. He shoved that thought right back inside where it belonged and ignored it. He couldn’t fix his own problem, but he could help out Mercer.

Panic swelled through Colt as the seconds ticked by without any response from inside—until he heard cursing on the other side of the door. Good. If his friend was cursing, he was alive. A solid minute later the lock snicked loudly as it twisted open.

Colt grabbed the handle and shoved it open, pushing past his best friend in case he tried to slam the door closed in his face.

Mercer, wearing boxers and nothing else, had grown a full black beard and his dark eyes were glassy. “What the hell are you doing here this early?”

“First, it’s two o’clock in the afternoon. Second…” Colt hauled off and punched him right in the nose. He needed to wake Mercer the hell up. Violence was pretty much the only way to do that now.

“Ah, hell,” Brooks muttered as Mercer flew back and fell on his ass with a grunt.

He held a hand to his nose, looking more alert than he had in two months as he glared up at Colt and Brooks. “What the hell, man?” His voice was muffled as he tried to stop the bleeding.

“I believe this is called an intervention,” Colt said, stepping into the foyer, cringing at the stench. “God, it smells like old pizza and cow crap in here. Mary Grace would kick your ass if she saw you living like this.”

“Don’t say her name!” Mercer shoved to his feet, letting his hand drop. Blood dripped down his face as he snarled at Colt. His teeth were toothpaste commercial white against his dark brown skin. Right now he looked like a rabid wolf baring his teeth at them.

“I’ll say her name if I want.” Yeah, he knew he was being harsh, but this was what Mercer needed. He needed to feel something, to wake the hell up. And making Mercer angry was the only way Colt knew how. Because the guy sure wasn’t going to talk about his fucking feelings. He needed to get out of this rabbit hole he’d let himself fall into. “We all lost her. Every single one of us.”

Most days Colt couldn’t believe she was gone. They’d all grown up together, and in his case, he’d been friends with Mary Grace since they were five years old. She was like a sister to Colt. Hell, he was still holding on to the hope that she wasn’t actually gone. It was why he was about to get on a plane in two hours and see if the tip he’d received was right. But first he had to make sure one of his best friends didn’t do something stupid while he was gone.

“Mary Grace.”

“Ah, hell,” Brooks said again, clearly not going to intervene. Just muttering his standard curse.

“Fuck you,” Mercer snapped, taking a step toward Colt.

That was it. Get angry, he silently willed his childhood friend. Mercer needed anger to replace the grief. God, or at least mute it. Just for a week. That was all Colt needed. Because if Mary Grace was alive, he was bringing her home to his best friend. He just couldn’t give Mercer the hope she was alive. Because if he did and it turned out she wasn’t… It would destroy him. “Mary. Grace.”

Mercer rushed at him like a bull.
