Gina Danna
Series: Hearts Touched by Fire Book 2
Genre: Historical Romance, Historical Fiction, Victorian Romance, Civil War
Publisher: To The Bitter End Publishing
Publication Date: September 4, 2017
She’s the best Union spy and he is a Confederate officer, thrown together during a war where love stands little chance of winning, except by an unconditional surrender….
Unconditional Surrender
Confederate Major Charles Silvers has had enough war. After two years of fighting, his view of a glorious Southern victory over the North has lost its luster and been replaced by a burning desire to return home to Virginia and life as it used to be, before the war. When he meets Sarah Lawrence during the siege on Vicksburg, Mississippi, he is convinced the blond-haired beauty could fill the void in his life—but what he does not know is that this Southern belle isn’t what she appears to be…
Tortured by memories of the night in 1860 when masked bushwackers torched her Mississippi home and killed her father, Sarah escaped the South. Now, however, she’s back and seeking revenge. As one of the best spies in the Union Army, she’s in a unique position to get her wish. For her, a Confederate Major, even a devastatingly handsome one, is just the tool to obtain the information the Union needs—even at the cost of her heart.
Loved this book! The plot offers the perfect conflict between Southern folk–one, the heroine, who is fighting on behalf of the Union, and the hero, who’s an officer in the Confederate Army.

An Excerpt from the Book

Charles wiped his lips with the linen napkin, placing it on the table as he pushed his chair back. “The meal was greatly appreciated. But, if you’ll excuse us, we do have to continue.” He held his hand out to Sarah.
As she placed her hand in his and rose, she saw through the window behind him the pinking sky outside. Sunset. A lump formed in her throat, one she desperately tried to swallow as ice raced down her spine.
Night was coming, and all the demons would be loose.
“Major, please.” Kavanaugh sat back in his chair. “To take a lady into the hazards of the night in this area is not a good choice. I invite you to stay here. There are more than enough bedrooms upstairs, and we will catch up with the general tomorrow, I am sure.”
Charles’s grip tightened. “While we appreciate the offer, I believe we must move on. I must get my darling wife to safety.”
This time, the Irishman stood. “All the more reason to stay. We are safe here. My man Bentley will keep an eye out for any mischief. And I assure you, General Johnston will arrive.”
“How can you be so sure, sir?” Charles challenged.
With that, all fear of the growing darkness dissipated. Sarah wanted to know as well.
“I have received word. He will meet us tomorrow.”
As a spy, opportunity here blossomed with each hour. Her mind raced. One thing was certain: she needed more information, but she remained firmly quiet, like a good Southern belle. Ladies were not supposed to be versed in politics or the war. Many she knew had more knowledge than men ever gave them credit for.
Charles frowned. “Sir, General Johnston is very high in command. I fail to see how he could take time from the war to ride here for a meeting with a foreign visiting politician.” He was gripping the back of the chair, his knuckles turning white. “If you wanted to view the workings of this conflict, why are you not with General Pemberton at Vicksburg? Or General Forrest, or Lee, or a multitude of others? Why here, in Mississippi?”
The politeness that had cloaked the evening came to an icy halt with the anger in Charles’s voice. His demeanor took on the edge of civility mixed with the animosity of frustration and futility.
Kavanaugh, though, did not react right away, aside from sitting straighter and toying absently with his cuffs.
“Major, I am well aware that you’ve been a loyal soldier to your cause. Your country can be proud to have you as her defender. Yet strong will and abilities, at this point, are not the winners. The Confederacy needs help, needs recognition by the queen of England and the rest of Europe. Other methods must be taken to pursue the win and gain the long-term right to be a nation.” He scooted his chair back. “Come, let me show you why I know your general will make it here.”

Dallas Anderson is stuck in a time loop that repeats Labor Day 2001 to September 11, 2001. He thinks he must prevent the terrorist attacks to break the loop. Excerpt

Someone somewhere was giving me a gang of second chances. Who knew when their generosity was going to run out?
So I staked out in the side parking lot of Family Medicine. I backed my Camry into a spot near some bushes so I wouldn’t be seen. But by the time I arrived there at 7:00 in the morning, there was no one to be seeing me anyway.
There I was, sitting in the driver seat like an old flatfoot. Slumped in my seat. A baseball cap pulled over my head. The tint on my windows provided an excellent cover. I spent the entire early morning thinking about the why of the loop. The why haunted me. Eluded me. It had nothing to do with saving Kevin. I knew that now. I knew exactly why I was stuck in a time loop. My mission. But the mission was daunting—much too daunting for one man to tackle. I needed a partner. Thena was the first person who came to mind. It was like a little voice in my head telling me that we were somehow irrevocably linked in some cosmic and spiritual way. In the kind of way that would cause her to believe me when I told her that I was in this loop. The kind of blind faith that would have her help me in perhaps doing what I was chosen to do. But I had to save Kevin. And I couldn’t get hurt in the process. I would sure need my ankle later.
It was nearly noon when I saw Thena walk by and I cursed. Why was she still here? Wasn’t she still mad at Kevin?
Now, I knew that the incident with the van wouldn’t take place for another fifteen minutes or so. So I had to act fast.
I pushed through the lobby doors in my trench coat and ball cap and said, “I knew you were going to let me down!”
“Dallas,” she turned left, right, then back to me. “What are you doing here?”
“I’ve told you: I’ve been here before.”
“Here?”
I looked around the lobby. “No…not here. But out there.” I pointed out the dark glass window. “Definitely out there.” Mind you, I was wearing a trench coat in the beginning of September, along with a hat pulled tightly over my eyes. I hadn’t taken stock in the craziness of my outfit. My next statement would sound to Thena as crazy as the outfit I was wearing.
“I’m stuck in a time loop. That’s how I know about Bryant Green—but all I know about him is that you were engaged long ago. That’s not important. I only brought him up because it’s a fact that I know that I could not have known unless I saw you talking to him, and of course your mother told me that you were engaged.”
“Kevin could’ve told you all of that. You know what? You need to leave.”
“Kevin’s coming soon. He’s going to start into that intersection and get demolished unless I save him.”
“I’m calling security.”
“Yesterday, you were wearing light pink toe-nail polish with glitter.” She narrowed her eyes. “Now how would I know that unless you took off your shoes? You didn’t yesterday. Not that yesterday. But on a previous yesterday, you did.”
Thena was motioning to the representative behind the reception counter. “Excuse me! Sir? Would you please call Public Safety?”
“Oh my goodness.” I shot up from my chair. “Kevin’s coming.”
I dashed out, knowing in my heart each step was the sealing of my fate. Sweat pooled at the base of my neck to match the moistness on my forehead. I tossed the hat to the ground. Why? No clue. Maybe I thought in the seconds between my lunging from the glass doors to the sidewalk my hat would slow me down. But that was stupid. The hat—if I still had it—would cushion the blow as my head hit the ground—again. Of course I didn’t feel much pain on my first go round (if that was the first go round of me attempting to save Kevin). But the pain afterwards? The mind gnawing migraines. My ankle feeling like someone had stabbed through it all the way to the bone. And that same someone had the unmitigated gall to leave that knife there. That rusty knife. In the next microsecond it dawned on me: what if I didn’t just get nicked this time? What if that minivan plowed right through me? Or what if I was unsuccessful in pushing Kevin out of the way of the van this time? It was sheer luck that aided me the last time. That stunt man stuff you see in the movies is not as reproducible as you think in the real world. Could I do it twice?

An Excerpt from the Book

“Astrid?” Marcán kept his tone low and controlled. “What d’ye here?”
The men stood, appearing surprised, ripped out of their lustful thoughts. That confusion swiftly changed to discomfort when they caught sight of Marcán’s expression. They moved away from her, opening the circle and allowing him a direct view of her, still seated beside Pádraig.
Her hair was tousled and her eyes were widely innocent. She dipped her head, eyeing the men from beneath her lashes.
“Nothing.” Her voice held a husky tone. “We are… talking.”
The men turned back to him and waited. Could they actually have any expectation of his consent? Mayhap in the Meic Murchadha clan. Marcán slowly gazed at each man in turn, looking him right in the eye, before finally settling his gaze again on Astrid.
“Do they all know ye are Diarmuid’s little sister?”
Each man took a step back. All but Pádraig, whose face maintained a look of superiority, his hand still on her shoulder like he owned her.
Marcán moved closer to Astrid, and the other men continued to yield, stepping even farther away. “Pádraig.”
“I thought ye were telling yer stories, Marcán,” Pádraig said.
Marcán looked at his hand on Astrid’s shoulder. And waited. Time slipped by. One of the other men coughed, and Pádraig finally removed his hand. Heaving a deep sigh, he moved to stand with the others. Marcán refused to acknowledge Astrid’s crestfallen expression when he extended his hand to her.
“And I thought ye would keep to yer own women rather than taking advantage of an innocent lass.” Marcán handed the man his fur.
“This lovely lass asked me to show her the hot springs.”
When Marcán looked again at Astrid, he had hoped for some show of guilt. Instead, he was met with a defiant glare.
“Oh did she?” Marcán asked as he shifted his gaze to the other men. “Were ye afraid ye’d lose yer way on yer own?”
Pádraig offered a small smile. “If the lass wishes for the men to join us, they are more than willing, and I do not object.”
The man was speaking of accepting the offer he’d believed she was making. Marcán tasted blood where he’d bitten his cheek to hold back his angry words. Rather than speak to Pádraig, whom he was tempted to strike, he turned to Astrid. “Did ye wish for more from these men than seeing the hot springs?”
Her eyes were angry, and her shoulders had rounded to their natural bend. Relieved to see her drop the flirtatious facade, he smiled. Just in time, he noticed the flash of anger and realized his smile had been misinterpreted. She thought he was laughing at her. He caught her hand just before it made contact with his cheek.
“How dare ye!” Astrid said, letting loose her tirade.
Though striking another was a punishable offense, Marcán was more than willing to stand there and let her have at him. She did not care for him, but her behavior—willfulness… stubbornness… whatever Diarmuid wanted to label her rants—was merely an indication of the great depth of her passion. Marcán recognized it because he was the same way. Mayhap that was what drew him to her. That he would not be the one to guide her to that knowledge was like a knife to his gut.
His tone hardened. “I dare because I am here to protect ye.”
She ripped her hand out of his grasp and stopped just short of stomping her injured foot. Her voice shrill, she said, “I do not want ye to protect me! I want nothing of ye!”
Eyes of the Seer by Ashley York is yet another mesmerizing hit by this author. EYES OF THE SEER will have you turning pages.

***An IWIC Hall of Fame Novel***
***Winner 2017 National Indie Excellence Award***
“This book needs to join the ranks of the classic survivor stories of WWII such as “Diary of Anne Frank” and “Man’s Search for Meaning”. It is truly that amazing!” InD’taleMagazine
“This family saga is wonderfully written and, aside from the emotional ramifications, very easy to read. I stayed up too late a couple of nights reading it…I highly recommend this book!” Long and Short Reviews
Spanning thirteen years from 1940 to 1953 and set against the epic panorama of WWII, author Annette Oppenlander’s SURVIVING THE FATHERLAND is a sweeping saga of family, love, and betrayal that illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the children’s war.
SURVIVING THE FATHERLAND tells the true and heart-wrenching stories of Lilly and Günter struggling with the terror-filled reality of life in the Third Reich, each embarking on their own dangerous path toward survival, freedom, and ultimately each other. Based on the author’s own family and anchored in historical facts, this story celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the strength of war children.
When her father goes off to war, seven-year-old Lilly is left with an unkind mother who favors her brother and chooses to ignore the lecherous pedophile next door. A few blocks away, twelve-year-old Günter also looses his father to the draft and quickly takes charge of supplementing his family’s ever-dwindling rations by any means necessary.
As the war escalates and bombs begin to rain, Lilly and Günter’s lives spiral out of control. Every day is a fight for survival. On a quest for firewood, Lilly encounters a dying soldier and steals her father’s last suit to help the man escape. Barely sixteen, Günter ignores his draft call and embarks as a fugitive on a harrowing 47-day ordeal–always just one step away from execution.
When at last the war ends, Günter grapples with his brother’s severe PTSD and the fact that none of his classmates survived. Welcoming denazification, Lilly takes a desperate step to rid herself once and for all of her disgusting neighbor’s grip. When Lilly and Günter meet in 1949, their love affair is like any other. Or so it seems. But old wounds and secrets have a way of rising to the surface once more.

Winner of the Pinnacle Award 2016 for Biographical Fiction, the Feathered Quill Award 2017 for Spiritual/Religious Fiction, and a Foreword INDIES Award for Military/Wartime Fiction.
Balian has survived the devastating defeat of the Frankish army at the Battle of Hattin, and walked away a free man after the surrender of Jerusalem, but he is baron of nothing in a kingdom that no longer exists. Haunted by the tens of thousands of Christians now enslaved by the Saracens, he is determined to regain what has been lost. The arrival of a vast crusading army under the soon-to-be-legendary Richard the Lionheart offers hope — but also conflict, as natives and crusaders clash and French and English quarrel.

Knight of Jerusalem
Published: September 2014
Balian, the landless son of a local baron, goes to Jerusalem to seek his fortune. Instead, he finds himself trapped into serving the young prince suffering from leprosy, an apparent sentence to obscurity and death. But the unexpected death of King Amalric makes the leper boy King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, and Balian’s prospects begin to improve.
The Byzantine princess Maria Comnena is just thirteen years old when she arrives in the Kingdom of Jerusalem at her great uncle’s orders to cement the alliance between the two Christian kingdoms in the East. The child wife of a man almost three times her own age, she is despite her excellent education and intelligence little more than a pretty doll in the eyes of her husband. When she fails to produce a male heir for the desperate king, her marriage becomes a gilded prison. Until suddenly the king is dead and Maria finds herself a wealthy widow at just twenty years of age.
Meanwhile, the charismatic Kurdish leader Saladin has united the forces of Islam and vowed to drive the Christians into the sea. While King Baldwin IV—and Balian—struggle to save the Holy Land for Christendom by whatever means they can, the internal rivalries of Templars and Hospitallers, the advocates of offense and defense, and the bitter rivalries of barons threaten to tear the kingdom apart.
Defender of Jerusalem
Published: July 2015
The Christian kingdom of Jerusalem is under siege. The charismatic Kurdish leader, Salah ad-Din, has succeeded in uniting Shiite Egypt with Sunnite Syria and has now declared jihad against the Christian kingdom. While King Baldwin IV struggles to defend his kingdom from the external threat despite the increasing ravages of leprosy, the struggle for the succession threatens to tear the kingdom apart from the inside. In the high-stakes game, one man stands out for his loyalty to the dying king, the kingdom, and Christianity itself. That man is Balian d’Ibelin.
This is the second book in a three-part biographical novel about Balian d’Ibelin, who defended Jerusalem against Salah ad-Din in 1187. The first book in the series, Knight of Jerusalem, was a finalist for the 2014 Chaucer Award for Historical Fiction and a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree.
