Rei was nosey. She’d been told it would always get her in trouble, but it never did. Until she met Megan, who promised her the job of a lifetime. Sure, the high school newspaper wasn’t the ideal job for most, but for Rei, it was a dream. She’d never considered putting her investigative nature to work, but what Megan was asking her to do was way beyond the requirements of a school newspaper. It was part of an underground news-for favor-service. Her partners, Asher and Eli, annoyed her by never trusting her to do a job alone. Maybe, this one time she should have listened, because being trapped with no one to bail her out may surely be the death of Rei. Spilling the secrets about her family she’d been withholding, will place every one of them in grave and serious danger.

EXCERPT

Maribelle’s mom was speeding off in her sports car when Rei arrived.

Trey raised an eyebrow. “She’s not staying?”

“I guess not.” Rei gathered her things, “If I call you late tonight to come over, maybe, hang out with us, could you?”

Trey’s lip lifted to the side. “I’ll try to make it happen.”

Rei smiled and leaned over and kissed him. “Thanks for the ride.”

Trey’s thumb tapped his lower lip. “Does that mean you aren’t mad at me anymore?”

“It means I am still a bit irritated at you trying to tell me what to do, but that you are too irresistible for me not to kiss you.”

He chuckled. “I do love you, Rei.”

“I know.” She opened the door and scooted out of the car before he could run around and open it for her. Rei turned and waved at him.

Trey winked and sped off.

Rei pivoted around and dropped her jaw at the size of Maribelle’s house. It was huge, with a u-shaped driveway. There was a small porch, arched overhang over the door. She was likely the last one there tonight since she had to work and talk to Trey. She climbed the few steps and rang the doorbell.

Ivy opened the door holding a champagne glass with a fuzzed pink drink in it. She squealed. “Rei’s here!”

Dexter didn’t like being a pawn. It seems life was taking him there though. His father and he never saw eye to eye, but being captured and tortured for his father’s mistakes gave Dexter too much to think about. First, the girl he lost, he’d never forget what they did to her. It changed him, and made him see the small city his father moved him to for what is was, a prison for magicals, the damned, and now him. Too bad, the creator of the void didn’t realize they would be better off if they’d set him free, because now, he was fighting for his life, and someone he’d have to hide his feelings from to protect, not just from those that want to drag them back, but from him -a vigilant.

Excerpt
“Do you want to escape here? I can help you.” Dex wanted out of this place.
Nash smiled, “Yes, but now is not the time. We have to wait for her to hatch. I need her for a successful escape. It’s why I implanted a song in the guard’s mind to put her with me.”
“You manipulated my friend Trey?” Dex wiped a hand down his face. This guy Nash was dangerous. Dex could feel it, only now, Dex felt it was time to stop trying to be the nice guy. He would survive. Finding a way to say his family would start with getting out of here, even if making a deal with this little devil would do it.
Nash lifted an eyebrow, “I hummed him a tune.”
“Whatever. You want my help getting out of here? I’m offering as long as we go our separate ways.”
“I will take your willing help.” Nash cocked his head to the side, “Although, if I wanted it, I could make you give it, you know.”
Dex crossed his arms over his chest, “Isn’t a free give better?”
“Oh it is. What will you give me for helping you get free?”
Dex frowned, “Give you? I got nothing.”
 “Everyone has…something.”
“What are you? I like to know what kind of creature I’m bargaining with.” Dex didn’t want to give this imp anything.
“I am many things, yet in part, not a human like you.”
Dex caught a hint of regret in his tone. Dex could swear Nash had a hungry gleam in his eye. Trey had warned him that Nash was pied piper and Rumpelstiltskin. Dex knew the pied piper had something to do with music. He had no idea what a Rumpelstiltskin was, and he had a feeling he shouldn’t mention it to Nash.
“You need to tell me specifically what you want before I can agree to anything.”
One side of Nash’s lip kicked up. “Her. The pixie-human. Give me her.”
Dex frowned, then scratched his head. Why would Nash ask him to give up the pixie-human? The girl wasn’t his to give, he didn’t even know what it looked like.
 “Not mine to give.”
Nash shrugged, “Then I won’t help either of you.”

Dexter
never looked for trouble, it finds him. Moving to a small city from New York
wasn’t his idea of an improvement. His plans to make his dreams of being
groomed as a pro football running back ended the moment his father uprooted his
family. Day one, he landed in jail without bail and realized too late that his
father made a deal to get him out, one that would change his life, and put his
family forever in danger. Unfortunately, finding love always happens at the
worst possible time. Dexter didn’t realize that love could also kill. Again,
trouble, it finds him, but this time he’d face it – head on, and hope he
survives. Prequel to Scepter of Fire Book 2 in The Vigilant Series.

“Well,
I hate to do this, but I am willing to let him go, with no charges if you can
convince him to be an informant for me.”
“Excuse
me?” Dex’s father responded, irritated.
“I
know why you are here. Also, who you are working with and you are playing a dangerous
game. I will stay out of that, but, your son is in the position to shed some
light on this case and help your cause. There is something going on with the
sports teams at that school. Kids going missing at the top of their prime, it’s
frustrating we don’t know why.”
“I
understand, but why would I put my son in danger to get you your answers?”
“Because
it may help you get the answers you seek…for The Vigilant,” Detective Whalen
whispered when he mentioned the last word.
“I’m
not doing that. Would you put your kid in that kind of danger?”
“I’ve
tried, but my son wasn’t good enough to be recruited by the elite on the team.
He’s into other things, playing the guitar in a band. The Soul warriors have to
be selected, it’s a process. Your son, he’s got what they are looking for, he’s
strong, a bit impulsive, a fighter and not a detective’s son.”
Dex
almost didn’t catch it, but had leaned in to hear every bit of their
conversation.
“How
about this, you put things in motion, my son doesn’t know he may be exposed to
the information you seek. Let things play out, then if you need to question
him, I’ll make sure he’s available for that.”
There
was a pause of silence, “That’s fair and a good approach. The less he knows,
the more likely he will be exposed too. You’ve got a deal.”
“And
detective, don’t ever mention The Vigilant in my presence again. You can get my
family and I killed if you do, and I fought too damned hard to be able to live
to risk someone putting me and mine in danger.”
“Understood.”
Dex
heard a slapping of hands and supposed they were shaking hands.
“Now,
detective, can I see my son?”

Excerpt
“Look kid, your father’s time is running cold. They are on to us, too many lives are at stake if either of you get caught.” Rocky handed her a thumb drive. “It’s a matter of your life and his death. He owes me, and I owe another a favor.”
“You give it to him,” EmVee replied evenly, checking her emotions and desire to punch the guy and run.
“No, this is where my road ends. Remember. Remember the name to nowhere and the code is your father’s real name. If you are his daughter. He would have told it to you, it’s a safe-word of sorts. I’m tired of running and they made sure I don’t have anything to run to. My son, he’s out there somewhere, and I’ll die taking the name of his safe-place with me. He’ll be free of them, both of them. Max and you have a chance. Don’t forget my name. It’ll mean something someday I hope. Run. Run now.” Rocky grasped her wrist, yanked it toward him, and placed the thumb drive in her hand.
EmVee looked at the drive, squeezed it in her palm.
Rocky tossed something in his mouth and pushed her back. “Look away, kid.” His body started convulsing. He groaned and collapsed, eyes open and staring towards the moon teased by dark clouds.
Sweat slid from under her drawn hoodie. Why’d he’d do it? They could’ve taken him to a hospital.
She glanced around quickly, then went for Rocky’s pockets. She reached in his jacket, flesh and entrails had spilled from his waist and into his coat. EmVee jerked back, shook her head a shaky sigh escaped her lips. She bit down on her lip and did what she had to do. In his jacket she found his cellphone and put it in her back pocket. His wallet she stuffed in the side pocket of her backpack. There was nothing else.
Putting her hand over her nose, swallowing back the tangy taste of vomit. She reached over and closed Rocky’s blue eyes. She’d never forget them.
