Hades Abyss MC, Book 11

Motorcycle Club Romance

Date Published: November 24, 2023

Nari – Pain. Humiliation. Those are the things my father taught me,
and every man I’ve met since. Running away from home didn’t fix
anything. Now I’m nineteen and back in the town my family calls home.
I haven’t told them I’m here, and I don’t plan to. But I
also didn’t count on a biker giving me a ride, and leaving me at the
Hades Abyss compound. They say they’ll help me, but can I trust them?
What if they’re just as bad as all the others?

Iron –I’m no stranger to the darker side of life. Sometimes
I’m the monster lurking in the shadows. Still, there’s a line I
won’t cross. I will never harm an innocent woman or child. The moment
I saw the tiny Asian woman cowering in front of Titan, I wanted to protect
her from the world. She’s been beaten, yet she’s not broken.
I’ve never met anyone like Nari before. Despite how timid she appears,
she’s stronger than she realizes. I know I’ll do whatever it
takes to make her smile and keep her safe, even if it means getting blood on
my hands. The moment her family tries to take her from me, I’ll show
them what it means for Nari to be mine.

WARNING: Iron is intended for readers 18+ due to bad language, violence,
and adult situations. There’s no cheating, no cliffhanger, and a
guaranteed happily ever after.

Nari

My cheek pressed into the carpet as Gio held me down. I knew I’d be
covered in bruises within the hour, if I wasn’t already. Nothing new.
It seemed all I had to do was breathe in order to piss him off. I’d
only stayed due to a lack of options. Leaving Gio would only mean taking a
chance on someone else. Men didn’t help runaway teens for nothing.
They either made us drug mules, thieves, or prostitutes. I couldn’t
think of a way to escape. Everyone I’d ever trusted had betrayed me.
Why should that change?

If things had been different, if my family had cared even a little, I never
would have run away. Living at home had been awful, but my life on the
streets was far worse.

“You stupid, worthless cunt! Where’s my money?” he asked
for the fifth time. As if my answer was suddenly going to change.

“I told you I don’t have it. I couldn’t find any work
today, Gio.” Or more accurately, I hadn’t found a mark. Stealing
was my forte.

He leaned in closer. “Then you have a choice, Nari. You can pay the
money by spending a few nights at the house on Spruce, or you find a high
paying job before morning. Which is it going to be?”

I swallowed hard. It wasn’t really a choice at all. I refused to go
near drugs, and I really didn’t want to be a whore. I couldn’t
understand the girls and women who chose that path. I didn’t look down
on them for it, but it wasn’t something I’d ever voluntarily do.
Of course, if I wanted a legal job, there was always the strip club. Except
I hadn’t really been blessed in the curves department. I didn’t
even need a bra. Who the hell would pay to watch me take my clothes off?
Now, letting him use me as a whore in his brothel? That was a different
story. Those men didn’t much care what a woman looked like, and I knew
he wouldn’t be sending his top customers my way. All they wanted was a
living woman to fuck, although it wouldn’t surprise me if some
didn’t even care if I was alive when they fucked me. I’d learned
the hard way just how screwed up people could be.

“I’ll find a job,” I said. “Please, Gio. I really
tried.”

He finally released me and stood. “Fine. By sunrise, you better have
something lined up. If not, don’t bother coming home. You either take
your ass over to Spruce, or you better run.”

As if running would do me any good. He’d track me down and things
would be even worse. But I had to try. I refused to go down without a fight,
or at the very least a last-ditch effort. If only I’d known I was
heading this direction the moment I walked out of my dad’s house. Not
once had I seen my picture on the news or in any papers. He’d never
bothered to search for me. Why would he when he had his precious Joon?

Maybe I could go home. Or at least back to my hometown. I didn’t
think Gio would ever think to look for me there. He knew how much I hated
that place, and the hell I’d been through while I lived at home. Yeah.
I should go back. I didn’t bring in enough money for him to chase me
across state lines.

I waited until Gio left, then packed a small backpack. It wasn’t like
I owned much anyway. Grabbing the little bit of cash I’d managed to
hide, I shoved it into my satchel and left the house for the last time. One
way or another, I was leaving this place behind. I didn’t care if I
had to hitchhike all the way back to Mississippi.

Every step made pain explode through my body. I stopped to put on my hoodie
and made sure my face was mostly covered. I didn’t need anyone seeing
the marks on my body and stopping to ask questions. A rumble of a motorcycle
came up behind me and slowed. I quickly glanced toward the street and
realized the man was eyeing me.

I assessed his overall size and wondered if I could outrun him. Men
prowling the streets for women always spelled trouble.

“Do you need a ride somewhere?” he asked.

I took in every detail of his appearance, from his Native American genes to
the leather cut declaring him part of the Reckless Kings MC. I hadn’t
heard of them, but there was a group of bikers in my hometown. They’d
been a little scary, but I’d never heard of them hurting kids or
anything. Was his club the same? Just because he looked rough and little
scary didn’t mean he was a bad guy. Sometimes, the ones who looked
like wholesome decent men were the most vicious.

He sighed and inched the bike closer. “Look. My name is Crow.
I’m not going to hurt you, but it looks like you’re in some
trouble and trying to get out of here. So you can get on the back of my bike
and I’ll take you as far as I can. Or you can keep walking and hope
whoever you’re running from doesn’t catch up. With the way
you’re moving, I’m going to assume someone beat the hell out of
you.”

I winced. He noticed that? “I’m going to
Mississippi.”

“What part?” he asked.

“Ever heard of a club called the Hades Abyss? I’m going to that
town,” I said.

He nodded. “I know them. Get on and I’ll make sure you get
home. It’s a little out of my way, but it’s fine.”

Without another thought, I climbed on behind him and put my arms around his
waist. It wasn’t my first time on a motorcycle, even if it had been
years ago. It also wasn’t the first time I’d put my trust in a
stranger. He’d either keep me safe, or I’d trade one abusive
asshole for another.

“I’m Nari,” I said. “Thanks for the
ride.”

“Sure thing, kid. Hold on tight.” He twisted the throttle ,
revving the engine, then eased the bike forward. As he picked up speed and
shifted gears, the wind whipped the hood off my head. I closed my eyes and
pressed my forehead to his back. For the first time in forever, I felt
free.

I didn’t know if I’d made the right choice, but there was no
going back now.

Ice — The second to last thing I expected when Cain called Church was for
him to resign as president of Bones. The last thing I expected was to be
voted in as president myself. So when I found myself on a rescue mission for
the daughter of the Devil himself? Well. I wasn’t surprised at all.
What did surprise me was the woman herself. Sure, I’d met her on more
than one occasion, but the teenage girl I’d seen a couple of years
before is definitely not the woman I pull out of the rushing water when she
gets stranded in the middle of a hurricane.

Dawn — Coming home during a hurricane isn’t one of the smartest
things I’ve ever done. Neither is getting mixed up with the man who
was the reason for me taking such a risk. So when I’m stranded with
water overtaking my car, I thought I’d finally tempted fate for the
last time. Until my guardian angel plucks me from the water and saves me. In
more ways than one. He’s the new president of Bones MC and a man I
can’t deny I want with every fiber of my being.

WARNING: Ice features a protective hero, a determined heroine and includes

“Dawn!” The man had to raise his voice over the wind though we
weren’t to the point where he had to yell. Yet. “We need to get
back to my ride.” I looked up at the man who held my arm in a firm but
gentle grip. He was gruff and insistent, and I thought I recognized
him.

“Cliff?”

“Yeah. They call me Ice now. I’m takin’ you back to the
Salvation’s Bane clubhouse. Are you injured?”

I shook my head. “No. Just wet. I’m sorry I left the
car.”

“The storm surge is starting. With high tide coming, the
water’s gonna rise fast. You didn’t have a choice.” He
took off his rain jacket and put it around me, helping me thread my arms
through it before zipping it up and pulling the hood over my head. He
tightened down the laces so the wind wouldn’t immediately blow it
off.

“We’ve got to go three blocks that way.” He pointed in
the direction he wanted to take me. “All you have to do is stay on
your feet and keep your head down. Can you do that for me?” Looking up
into his face, I nodded. “Good. Let’s go.”

Ice had a firm grip on my hand as he led the way. We moved quickly through
the flooded streets, the water now up to our knees and rising fast. The wind
was howling around us. Even though he’d tightened it almost
uncomfortably, my hood didn’t last two seconds once we were out of the
relative shelter of the doorway. My hair whipped into my face, making it
almost impossible to see where we were going. But Ice was a strong presence
beside me, guiding me through the chaos with a steady hand and a sure sense
of direction. Every so often, he would lean in close to my ear to be heard
over the wind, giving me a few words of encouragement or advice.

“Keep your head down, Dawn! We’re almost there!”

I nodded, gritting my teeth against the driving rain and pushing on through
the water. My legs were aching with my effort and my clothes were soaked
through, but I refused to give up. I trusted in Ice and his ability to get
us both to safety because my dad trusted him. No one failed my dad. Not if
they wanted to live.

Finally, after what felt like hours of trudging through the water, we
reached a parking garage. Ice took me up one level to the second floor. It
was low to the ground but up high enough to keep us out of the water. I
hoped.

He led me to the Bronco I’d been expecting and opened the back.
“I’ve got some dry clothes and food. Might be too big for you
but you’ll be warm and dry.”

Exhausted, I slumped against the vehicle, breathing hard. Once we’d
made it to the parking garage, the going had been much easier, but the wind
still howled through the structure and I was spent.

Ice opened the back of the truck. The tailgate swung out and he urged me
behind it. He stood on the other side and turned his back, effectively
guarding the open side from prying eyes. Surprisingly, the place seemed
deserted. I’d have thought there would be other people taking shelter,
but the town was small. Maybe they got everyone evacuated or to an actual
shelter before the storm started.

He turned his head to the side, not looking at me, but like he was trying
to see if I was moving. I wasn’t.

“You good?”

“I-I d-don’t know.”

Carefully, Ice turned farther until he saw I was still dressed, then he
turned all the way and stepped closer to me. “You’re safe, Dawn.
I swear I’ll keep you safe. I’ll protect you with my
life.” Intense, dark eyes bore into my own. He was so tall and big, he
loomed over me. I should have been intimidated but I wasn’t.

It was in that moment I realized why my dad trusted Ice so much. He was
capable, strong, and fiercely loyal. He was also my calm in the middle of
this storm. Literally. I also knew that like Cain and El Diablo, Ice was
every bit as capable and sure of himself as they were. As I looked up at
him, I saw a flicker of something in his gaze that made my heart race.

“Thank you,” I whispered, my voice hoarse from the wind and the
rain.

Ice’s hand found my chin, tilting my face up to his. “Trust me
to see you through this. Yes?” I nodded. “Good. Get some dry
clothes on. I’ve got your back.”

As I looked up into his face, one strangled sob escaped me. I thought he
might look disgruntled or annoyed. Instead, Ice’s eyes got big and he
rocked backward like he was going to step away from me. Then he shook his
head and reached for me.

“Come here, honey.”

Having Ice pull me into his arms was the very last thing I expected. He
surrounded me with his big frame, those strong arms holding me tightly when
I felt like I was going to fragment into a million pieces.

I wanted to break down. Wanted to let the fear wash through me so I could
cleanse myself of it. Get it out of my system. But this was only the
beginning. I knew the worst was yet to come, and that was assuming we could
get out of this stupid parking garage and to the Salvation’s Bane
clubhouse.

“Take some deep breaths for me.” His gruff voice was oddly
soothing. His arms around me kept me grounded when I knew I was so in over
my head — literally — there was no way I could fight this on my own. I
could feel the heavy muscles of his chest where I had my cheek on his wet
shirt. The water was hot from the heat of his skin and as he rubbed one hand
gently up and down my back, the tension lessened inside me somewhat.

“I’m sorry.”

“No need to be sorry. This is a pretty scary situation.”

Strangely, I felt a laugh bubble up in my throat. “You can say that
again.”

He grunted, holding me a few seconds longer before pulling back. “You
can do this, Dawn. Get some dry clothes on and I’ll do the same. Then
we’ll check in with Thorn and Ripper. They’re keeping an eye on
the weather minute by minute.”

“I think Shotgun is too.”

“I’m sure he is. Likely, he and Ripper are in constant contact,
conferring with each other and figuring out the best course of action for
us. They’ll get me the most accurate information they can, and
I’ll decide what we do next.”

Again, I nodded. “OK.” I took another breath. “OK. I can
do this.”

He nodded sharply at me. “Of course, you can. You’re El
Diablo’s daughter.” He raised his chin looking proud. Of me?
Then he turned his back so I could have some privacy.

Danica — Wylde’s an incorrigible flirt. I know he acts like
he’s a player, but I’ve seen another side of him. Kids from all
over the area flock to him because he’s Wylde — the guru of all
things electronic. He has endless patience with the teens looking to learn
his skill in video games, but he has none with adults. I love his twisted,
sarcastic sense of humor, and that streak of protectiveness he shows on
occasion. He’s wicked smart and I love watching him use his
intelligence and his wit. Plus he’s hotter than sin. So I flirt
back.

Wylde — I’ve got it bad. I come to the coffee shop just to be near
Danica. The tiny barista has more heart than most people I’ve met. But
she’s the kind of woman who’ll want forever, and that’s
not me. But when I realize the danger she and her sisters are in, I’ll
do whatever’s necessary to keep them safe. Once Danica knows what
I’m capable of, I know she’ll run screaming into the night, and
I’ll never see her again.

“I’ll take a double ristretto with iced vanilla double shot and
organic chocolate brownie decaf, please.”

The line behind me groaned.

One guy grumbled from behind me, “Some of us got places to
be!”

“Yeah,” someone else volunteered. “You shouldn’t
get something so complicated when the line’s so long.”

I just grinned, loving the disgruntled mutterings. Did my heart good.
“It’s amazing what you can wait for when you’re, you know,
early. My recommendation to people in a hurry is to start earlier. Then
you’re not in such a rush.” I leaned in over the counter for a
stage whisper at the woman getting ready to serve me. “Too much stress
can lead to gas.”

The young woman gave me a star struck smile, eating me up with her eyes and
actually licking her lips. What can I say? I have that effect on women. Even
if this one was a little young for my tastes.

“That was a… double… uh… and vanilla…
decaf?” She graced me with a dreamy smile. The girl had no clue what
she was doing, but I wasn’t about to push her. Mainly because I saw
the one person in the whole place who could make this situation
better.

Danica James stepped behind the counter as she tied her apron around her
slender waist. She rolled her eyes, giving me a look that said I was being a
drama queen again. Instead of saying anything, she pulled out a big mug with
the coffee shop’s logo on it and filled it full of black coffee.

“Anything else, Wylde?”

I grinned as I paid for the cup and the coffee. “Nope. Thanks,
Danica.”

She raised an eyebrow, glancing at the tip jar pointedly. “Just put
the tip in, Wylde. See how it feels.”

Yeah, we had a thing going. And I always waited until she said it before I
put in my tip. She always said it.

“What? Is that it?”

“Asshole.”

Yeah, the groans behind me were amusing as shit.

“You’re welcome.” I threw up a hand and headed back to my
table where I’d set up my laptop for the morning. I loved coming here.
Not for the glacially slow Internet or the stimulating company that amused
me so much. Hell, I didn’t even come for the coffee, though it was the
best in town. No. I came for Danica James.

The woman was sin and sex with a snarky attitude. She knew my drink as well
as my moods and accommodated both. If I were the kind of man looking for a
woman for my own, it would probably be Danica. Not only was she beautiful
and sassy, but she was kind, as well. I’d seen her giving out the
leftover pastries to a few homeless people who hung out a couple of blocks
from Henry’s Coffee Shop on multiple occasions. I’d also seen
her paying for them out of her tips so her boss didn’t get in a twist.
I made sure to contribute as much as I could and not look like a creepy
stalker. I also was pretty sure she knew what I was doing.

An hour later, I was banging away on a Discord channel I frequented,
helping noobs learn to play Fortnite. The other barista approached me, a big
smile on her face. She’d loosened a couple of buttons on her top so I
had a good view of her cleavage. Which, I admit, was a pretty good view. But
she wasn’t my style. Mainly because she was star struck by my good
looks, tattoos, and quite possibly my Titan GT77, but I didn’t think
so. She might surprise me, but didn’t strike me as the computer geek
type.

“Hey, Wylde.” She smiled and set a large black coffee next to
my empty mug. “Want me to freshen up your mug?”

I glanced at the cup she’d just set in front of me. “I think
I’m good. I’ll come to the bar if I need something.” I
smiled to take the sting out, but honestly, I could care less if she got
offended. She wasn’t stupid… exactly… she was just young
and thought she could lead guys around by their dicks. I’d seen it a
few times since she started. I’d also overheard her telling her
girlfriends she could get me into bed with a crook of her finger. I had to
chuckle at that.

Her smile faltered. “I was just being nice.”

I sighed and looked up from the chat session I was in. Normally, I’d
have my headphones on using voice chat, but it was crowded and I
didn’t want to disturb anyone. I could be a bastard, but I
wasn’t a complete asshole. Most of the time.

“Look, kid. I’m sure you’re nice and all, but you
ain’t my type. Tell your friends I’m gay or something if you
think it will help you save face. But I’m not interested.
‘K?”

All right. So maybe I was a complete asshole. Wasn’t the first time.
Wouldn’t be the last.

The girl stomped her foot. “You don’t have to be so
rude.” Then she turned and flounced off.

“Making friends, I see.”

Danica grinned at me from where she was wiping down a table while Little
Miss Thang had moved back behind the bar. She glared furiously at me before
going back to her phone.

I grinned at Danica. “I do my best.”

She snorted. “Right. You do your best to piss as many people off as
you can. Pretty sure you think they’ve made pissing people off an
Olympic sport, and you’re determined to win gold.”

I barked out a laugh. Which got Little Miss Thang back to glaring at me.
Only now, her anger spilled over to Danica. That wasn’t happening. I
met her gaze while I continued my conversation with Danica. The look I gave
her was probably not very pleasant.

“Well, you know what they say. Better pissed off than pissed on. I
mean, that’s not really my thing, but I could do it. Honestly, though,
she didn’t take the hint so I had to go the not-so-subtle
route.”

“Just be careful of your coffee if Jordan serves it. Not saying
she’d put laxative in it. Not not saying it either. Or maybe
salt.” She looked off, as if pondering which would be worse. “I
think I’d prefer the laxative.”

I sketched her a two-fingered salute and we both went about our business.
It was one of many reasons I liked Danica. She knew when to leave a man
alone, and she didn’t throw herself at me either. Hell, I knew she
wanted me. What woman wouldn’t? But she never let on like she did.
Which, I’ll admit, was part of the draw. It was also the reason I
didn’t pursue her. Once the chase was over, I’d get bored and
she’d get hurt. That was the last thing I wanted.

I’d been too late to save the young girl Vega targeted, but I
wouldn’t fail this time. The woman in his grasp looked to be no more
than nineteen years old. The way she slumped told me she’d either been
drugged or knocked unconscious. I knew Vega would do unspeakable things to
her. As much as I wanted to rip her from his arms right here and now, I knew
it was better to wait. He likely had other victims and I hoped he would lead
me to them. If at all possible, tonight I would save more than one
life.

The ink on my back felt as if it burned, a reminder of the life I’d
left behind. I hadn’t worn my club colors in more than a decade. After
I’d gone nomad, I’d disappeared, making sure my brothers
couldn’t find me. They didn’t know of my failed mission, and I
hoped they never did. Because of me, multiple lives had been lost. I knew
saving this woman and the others couldn’t make up for what I’d
done before, but it was the only way I knew of to ease the burden on my
guilty conscience.

I clung to the shadows out-of-sight, a knife gripped in my hand. The woman
let out a soft moan and I hoped she wouldn’t wake any time soon. Vega
would do whatever it took to keep her quiet, and I wanted her to suffer as
little as possible. There was no telling what he had already done to
her.

Following silently, I kept him within sight. Vega made his way through the
shady neighborhood, fast approaching the warehouses on the opposite end. I
held back as he entered the last structure on the right. The few windows I
saw were covered in dust and grime, but I knew I needed to at least try to
get a glimpse inside the building. If I had my brothers with me, things
would have been different. I didn’t know if they’d ever accept
me back again, or if they even knew I was still alive. Only Badger had kept
in touch. Confronting Vega alone wasn’t a good idea. I knew he had
multiple men working under him including extra hired muscle. Many would call
this a suicide mission. Perhaps they were right, but I didn’t care if
I died today as long as the innocent women and girls inside the building
would be safe.

Through the dirt-encrusted glass, I could see Vega and three other men. The
woman he’d carried inside was now slumped in a chair, her wrists tied
to the arms. A trickle of blood ran from her temple down the side of her
face. I wondered how else he’d hurt her. Scanning the room, I saw a
row of cages, each filled with at least one teenage girl or young woman.
None looked over the age of twenty and the youngest appeared to be near
thirteen. I couldn’t stand sick fucks like Vega.

I watched for another twenty minutes, keeping an eye on any changes. So
far, it didn’t look like Vega had other men with him. Three
didn’t seem like much for someone like him. Which meant they were
either on their way or he felt secure with such a small detail. If I had my
sniper rifle, it would have been much easier to take them out. Instead, all
I had was my nine millimeter and my knife. There was no way to end their
miserable lives without getting closer.

Part of me wanted to feel Vega’s blood and watch as the light dimmed
from his eyes. The average person might have considered him a monster, but
tonight I was the vicious thing lurking in the dark. My heart kept a steady
rhythm as I watched and waited. I knew I’d have to move before he
harmed the woman anymore, yet I couldn’t be careless and rush into
danger. Doing so would only end all our lives.

I backed away from the window as the phone vibrated in my pocket. Pulling
it out I checked the screen. A familiar name flashed on the display. Badger.
Why the hell would he be calling now?

My curiosity got the better of me and I stepped farther away from the
warehouse to answer the call.

“To what do I owe the pleasure?” I asked when the call
connected.

“Why do you always have to be a dick when you answer the phone? You
could at least try not to sound sarcastic.”

“Maybe I just seem like one because we haven’t spoken in so
long. It’s not like we talk more than once every two or three years.
Is there even anyone else at the club who knows I’m still
alive?”

Badger sighed. “I got the feeling you didn’t want anyone to
know you were alive. Was I wrong? And don’t think for one second
I’m not aware of what you’ve been up to. I’ve left you
alone to do your thing, but this is news that couldn’t wait any
longer.”

My gut churned. What the hell could have possibly happened to make him say
such a thing? “What’s wrong?”

“It’s Grizzly. I don’t know how else to say it so
I’ll just spit it out. He’s gone. Died a few months ago.
I’d have called sooner but shit hit the fan around here.”

I pressed a hand to my chest, feeling the loss of my ex-president. I
hadn’t seen him in over ten years. It never occurred to me the last
time I walked out would be the last chance I ever had to speak with
him.

“What happened? How did he die?” I asked.

“Too many years of bad decisions caught up to him. His health began
to decline a little while back. Finally, his body just gave out. It hit the
entire club hard, especially his daughters.”

The way he said the word daughters made me think there was something more
to it, but now wasn’t the time to ask. I could mourn Grizzly later and
ask for more details about the club. Right now, I needed to focus on the
women and girls who needed my help. Besides, I’d been gone from the
club for so long I didn’t even know any of Grizzly’s adopted
daughters. I’d heard about them from Badger previously, but it
wasn’t the same as meeting them in person.

“I appreciate the call, but now isn’t a good time. Sorry,
Badger. I’ve got to go.” I hung up before he could say another
word.

Creeping back over to the warehouse, I looked into the window again. While
I’d been on the phone, Vega had been having a bit of fun. The poor
woman tied to the chair now had multiple wounds. I could see the rise and
fall of her chest and said a silent thanks she was still alive. But I
worried she wouldn’t be for much longer. Whatever it took, I needed to
get her and the others out of there as quickly as possible.

One of Vega’s men pulled out a pack of cigarettes and headed for the
door. I knew this was my chance to take out at least one of them. When he
didn’t return, Vega would suspect something was up. It was a risk
I’d have to take.

I heard the warehouse door open and shut. Gripping my knife tightly, I
crept around the corner. I saw the flicker of the flame from his lighter,
then the soft glow from the end of a cigarette. While he remained
preoccupied, I moved swiftly on silent feet. Before the asshole had a chance
to even realize I was there, I placed my hand over his mouth and slit his
throat.

The coppery scent of his blood filled the air, and I knew it would attract
other predators, both human and animal. The clock was ticking. I leaned
against the building, melding with the shadows, and waited for my next
victim. It wasn’t long before another of Vega’s men came
outside.

“Joe, where the fuck are you? Vega is starting to get pissed. Stop
screwing around and come back inside.”

I had bad news for him. Joe wouldn’t be going back inside. He had a
one-way ticket to hell…

EXCERPT

I stashed my purse and stepped into the bathroom to freshen up. I splashed
water on my face, used a wet paper towel to wipe down my arms and the back
of my neck, then cleaned my armpits. Thankfully I kept a small bag stashed
here with some deodorant and body spray. I used both before smoothing my
hair and went to get a cup of coffee. I poured the strong brew and peered at
the choices in the glass cabinet.

Mrs. Johnson caught my attention and signed her question. What will it be
this morning?

I signed and spoke my answer, even though I knew my voice could be loud and
off-putting to some people. “Blueberry.”

She smiled and gave me a nod. Once she’d plated the muffin for me, I
took my breakfast to the office and got started on my work. I paused between
tasks to nibble on the muffin and take a swallow or two of coffee before
getting back to it. I helped with her bookkeeping, inventory, and organized
her files. As Mrs. Johnson once said, she loved the people and baking part
of her business, but not so much the rest of it.

I couldn’t call the vendors for her, but I did tackle the emails that
came through, and I maintained her store website. In fact, I needed to go
snap a few pictures for the shop’s social media accounts. I grabbed my
phone and peered out into the front of the shop. Only two men stood at the
counter, both wearing the black leather vests of the local motorcycle
club.

Even though they made me a little nervous, I pasted a smile on my face and
stepped out front. Neither one acknowledged me, even though I did feel
someone’s eyes watching me as I took a few pictures. If it
hadn’t been for Mrs. Johnson’s frantic waving, which I caught
from the corner of my eye, the shouted hey would have scared the crap out of
me. While it wasn’t as loud to me as it would be for others, I still
hadn’t expected to hear someone speaking behind me. And for his voice
to come through so clearly, I knew he’d yelled the word.

I paused and turned to face the men. One of them was speaking, but he was
talking so fast, I couldn’t catch everything. I had a hearing aid in
one ear, which allowed me to hear a small amount. Still, I relied heavily on
lip reading and sign language. Except this man’s mouth was covered by
a moustache and beard. I couldn’t make out what he was saying. I tried
to turn my hearing aid up a little.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you,” I said. The
man’s eyebrows rose, and he came closer, moving slowly. Had he not
realized I was deaf? I’d thought that was what Mrs. Johnson had been
so frantic about.

“Why are you taking pictures?” he asked slowly, making sure to
enunciate each word, and speaking loudly.

I showed him my phone, where I’d been in the process of loading a few
images to Instagram for the Etta Mae’s account. I turned so he could
watch as I typed, added my hashtags, then posted the images. Next, I did the
same for Facebook and Twitter. I’d save TikTok for another time, since
I’d need to create a video of the items on display. I never liked
doing that when people were present.

The other man came over and started signing. He didn’t mean to scare
you. We didn’t realize you couldn’t hear.

I signed my response back. It’s okay.

“Can you say that out loud?” the first man asked. “I
don’t know how to use sign language.”

“I said it’s okay.” The way Mrs. Johnson winced, I knew
my volume had been a little too loud. “Sorry.”

“I’m Truth,” the man said. “And this is
Knuckles.”

The one he called Knuckles signed his answer as Truth spoke. So I did the
same, both speaking and signing. “I’m Madison.”
