Synopsis: Some vampires have trouble figuring out how they want to spend eternity, but playboy Michael Odell isn’t one of them. He knows exactly what he wants: fine wines and beautiful women fuel his passion and he’s made it his mission to sample as many of either as he can. Fate has other ideas. One night, on his way home, Michael discovers a woman lying face-down in an alley, who is losing the fight to live. There’s only one way of saving her: The Ritual. Little does Michael know that this little act of mercy is going to change his life forever and before long he finds himself falling for the curvy stranger.

Anna doesn’t remember how she ended up discarded at death’s door in a dark alley, only that she woke up there. She doesn’t even know her last name. After coming face-to-face with her gorgeous rescuer, she passes out again and finds herself in a lavish mansion with a new lease on eternal life.

Who – or more importantly, what – is she now? And the people who tried to kill her – why were they after her? Anna is determined to figure it all out for herself. But before her questions are answered, she has to learn that even in this new immortal existence, it’s good to have friends – and perhaps a lover – by your side.

EXCERPT

Michael buttoned up his woolen overcoat as he stepped outside. It was a starless night; the dense cloud cover had made sure of that. There was a certain electricity in the air, which to him suggested it might be about to start snowing.

Michael took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Yes, something was definitely coming. Could that be what had made him feel off for most of the night?

The frosty air surrounding the bar he’d just left seemed heavy with a great many aromas. Things that humans might never notice; for example, the scent of what remained of the fallen autumn leaves from that one tree down the street.

Michael turned to face the opposite direction. Chinatown was at least a mile away, but he could smell the restaurants from here.

He was tempted to stretch his legs a little and sprint home as fast as only a vampire could, but the roads were still too busy. He couldn’t risk someone watching him as he seemingly disappeared into thin air. The Council didn’t take kindly to vampires exposing themselves to humans at the best of times. Ever since the big showdown between Michael’s friend and mentor Alexander and Council leader Julius, they’d been under extra scrutiny. Julius would jump at the chance to punish Michael for supporting Alexander.

Things had really changed a lot in a short period of time, and not entirely for the better.

Michael opened his eyes again, resigned to the fact that he would either have to hail a cab or walk home at an excruciatingly slow, much more human-like pace.

He started to walk roughly in the direction of Hyde Park. If he found a quiet spot, he might still indulge himself in a little fun. As he crossed the busy street ahead, his nose caught a whiff of something unexpected, something metallic.

Blood.

His instincts took over. He turned on his heel and sped up a little as he followed the smell. A low whimper urged him to speed up even further, but he couldn’t risk going any faster if he didn’t want to make a spectacle of himself.

There was a dark passageway in between two large office buildings. He made his way through and found himself in a quiet courtyard, which housed a number of large garbage bins. A woman’s foot peeked out from in between them. No human would have been able to see it in the dark, but Michael could.

Her breaths were labored and becoming shallower, and her heartbeat was slowing. Michael pushed one of the bins aside and kneeled beside the woman, who lay face-down on the ground.

It was obvious to him now; she was barely clinging on to life. He carefully turned her onto her back. Her lips had a purple tinge and her skin looked dry and unusually pale for a human.

The two dark marks on her neck spoke volumes.

She’d been drained.

For but a split second, her eyelids fluttered open. She seemed to see him and opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came. Then she slipped back into unconsciousness.

Michael tensed up. He ought to leave, pretend he never found her. The last thing he needed was for someone to find him here, standing over a dying woman who had clearly been attacked by one of his own. But he couldn’t bring himself to leave.

How pretty she was, how fragile, as she clung to her last shred of humanity.

Why had she ended up like this? Killing was against the rules. And discarding a drained body out in public where it could so easily be discovered? That was sacrilege.

His mind raced. Too many questions, not enough answers.

Michael gazed down at her face; the slightly parted lips, despite their unnatural color, still looked full and luxurious. As did the rest of her, actually. She made a beautiful corpse. Such a waste. This woman would have been a sight to behold before someone had decided to take her life for themselves.

He ran the back of his index finger along the side of her face. She twitched slightly, seemingly in reaction to his touch, causing him to pull away again.

No, he would not leave her, discarded among these bins of office refuse. This wasn’t the end she deserved.

Michael closed his eyes and tried to focus. Her heartbeat had become irregular, as though her body was giving up the fight. If he didn’t hurry, there wouldn’t be any life left to save.

Before he fully realized what he was doing, Michael nicked a vein in his wrist and pressed the newly created wound against her lips.

“Drink,” he whispered.

She was too far out of it, so he couldn’t compel her to listen, but that wouldn’t stop him.

Then, he picked up one of her arms and brought it to his own lips. He waited for what felt like forever. Was she too far gone already?

“Drink or you’ll die!” he urged again, fully aware she likely couldn’t even hear him.

Still, as more and more of his blood trickled out of the gash in his wrist, there was a subtle change in her. Her heartbeat seemed to strengthen. Her breaths became more controlled.

And then, out of nowhere, her free hand jerked up to grab his wrist and press it tightly against her mouth. Finally, she drank in deep gulps as her body tried to recover what it had lost.

That was his cue.

He bit into the wrist he’d been holding already and allowed himself the smallest of tastes. That completed the cycle. The Ritual was done.

She became still again and let go of his arm, her hand flopping down onto her stomach. Her eyes had remained shut throughout; she probably hadn’t even realized what had just happened.

He’d barely realized it too; he’d been acting purely on instinct. Now, as he stood up and inspected the smeared blood on his wrist, it hit him. He’d performed the Ritual. He’d created another vampire—tried to, anyway.

That was something he’d vowed he’d never take as lightly as his own maker had.

She wasn’t out of the woods yet; in fact, he wouldn’t know if she’d even survive the change until the following night, but for some strange reason, he’d jumped in and impulsively made the biggest decision of his immortal life so far.

Things would never be the same again.

Excerpt from AN ODE FOR ORCHIDS by JAMES FANT

As the sun started easing below the horizon, Maxwell and Tamara decided to take a walk down the beach, leaving Karen and William alone.

“William, I expect you to be on your best behavior while we’re gone,” Tamara said with a wink.

“I’ll be a perfect gentleman,” he replied.

As soon as they left, William asked Karen, “Do you want to go upstairs to my place?”

She tilted her head to the side and smiled. “I thought you said you were going to be a perfect gentleman.”

“Oh and I will.”

Karen thought about it for a few seconds and then she replied, “Okay, sure.”

As they walked up the steps to his apartment, William spied Karen’s backside. He really liked what he saw. Her beautiful face, her stunning body. But he had to admit that there was something else there, way beyond things physical. Maxwell told him to ignore it. But it was still there.

“This is my place,” William said as he opened the door for Karen.

“Okay, okay, I hear you. This is really nice.” She marveled at his décor. “I love the open space. Your place isn’t like Maxwell’s at all.”

“No. The previous owners of this unit made some serious upgrades.”

She admired the African statuettes as well as the life size mahogany framed poster of John Coltrane.

“What do you know about Giant Steps?” She rubbed her fingers over the elegant frame and looked at the late great tenor sax man in his element.

“Aw, that’s my favorite jazz record right there.”

“This portrait is autographed,” Karen noticed.

“Yes. My dad got that when he and my mom were overseas visiting some friends. My parents travelled a lot. They have college friends all over the place: Peru, Europe, Japan, all over the U.S. Sometimes they’d take me and my brothers along when they visited their friends. So I’ve literally been around the world.”

Karen toured the rest of the living room, admiring the tan Berber carpet and the suede couch and loveseat with oil-finished oval drum end tables. Then she made her way to the kitchen and dining room, complimenting William on his stainless steel appliances and marble counter tops. “Look at me,” she said. “I’m just making myself at home.”

That made William smile.

Then she asked, “I’m not going to find any of your girlfriend’s panties lying around here, am I?”

He laughed. “No, no, no. There are no panties because there is no girlfriend.”

“I find that hard to believe.”

“What about you? Do you have a boyfriend?”

“Nope. I am single.”

“I find that really hard to believe.”

Karen took a seat on one of the Cierra bar stools. “Why is that?” she asked.

“You’re too beautiful to not have a man.”

That made her smile. “Aw shucks. But wouldn’t you know that I get that all of the time.”

William and Karen just looked at each other for a moment, beaming. A part of him wanted to scream, I’m in love with you! I dreamed about you last night!

But instead he asked, “Do you want something to drink?”

“Bottled water’s fine.”

“Coming up.”

William retrieved two bottles of Dasani from his pantry and handed one to Karen along with a paper towel.

“It must be nice living right on the beach,” she said as she looked out onto the balcony. By then the sky was lit with thousands of stars.

“It has its perks, until a hurricane comes. Um—do you want to go out to the balcony?”

“Sure.”

They quietly sat on the balcony, enjoying the night sky and the sounds of the ocean’s waves crashing against the sandy shore.

“I have a balcony in my bedroom, too.” Why did I just say that, William thought.

“Oh yeah? If I lived out here, and I had a balcony in my bedroom, I’d sleep with the door open every night so I can hear the ocean. It’s magical.”

Karen glanced over at William, who caught her looking. She quickly looked away.

“I’m glad that Tamara asked me to come with her tonight. I was really getting tired of her trying to fix me up with guys.” Oh goodness! Why did I just say that, Karen thought.

“Yeah, Tamara’s nice. Maxwell is head over heels for her. And he doesn’t usually do head over heels, believe it or not. He was very nervous before y’all showed up.”

“Nervous isn’t always bad. Sometime nervous is a good thing.”

Karen giggled.

“What’s so funny?”

“Oh nothing.”

“Nothing in woman-speak means something.”

“Woman-speak?”

He gave a shy smile and said, “Never mind.”

“What? Don’t be scared. Tell me what woman-speak means.”

He turned to face her. She gave him her full attention.

“Woman-speak is when you say one thing but mean another.”

“Elaborate.”

“Oh boy, I’m in trouble now.”

“You’re not in trouble.” She brushed her hand against his arm. “Continue.”

“Like when something’s on a woman’s mind and her man asks, ‘What’s wrong?’ And she says ‘Nothing.’ But in reality something is really wrong. And her man has to keep on asking her what’s wrong until she finally tells him. Woman-speak. You ladies have your own language.”

“So are you an expert on women?”

“By no stretch. But I have a great appreciation for women. My mother’s a woman.”

Karen chuckled again. “That’s nice. You know, William, I was worried about you earlier. You were all quiet. I didn’t know what was wrong with you.”

“I guess I was just nervous.”

“It’s like I said earlier; sometimes nervous is a good thing.”

They looked at each other briefly, Karen admiring William’s handsome smile, he marveling her beautiful eyes.

Then he asked, “So Tamara is trying to set you up with someone, huh?”

“I cannot believe I told you that.”

“So let’s not disappoint her. We should go out.”

“You mean like on a date?”

“Yes. Dinner, a movie perhaps.”

“You’re a nice enough guy. I guess that will be fine.”

“I am a nice enough guy,” he replied. “And I promise. I will be a perfect gentleman.”

EXCERPT

With my arm wrapped around her shoulder and her head resting against my chest, Sophie had fallen silent. Listening to her deep and steady breathing, I realized she was asleep.

I used the quiet moment to assess my earlier reaction and examine my feelings. Even though I’d pursued her with a single-minded focus, I hadn’t meant for any of this to happen. At first I’d told myself we’d have a good time, enjoy each other’s bodies, but it wouldn’t go any further. But I knew I’d been fooling myself from the get-go. I’d fallen hard … and fast. So incredibly fast. The joke was on me though because for once I was the one looking for commitment from someone who couldn’t return the sentiment.

The way my chest hurt every time I thought about her leaving let me know I wasn’t going to handle it very well when the day came. I’d already watched her leave Ballycurra once with a lump in my throat. I didn’t need a repeat performance. What I needed was to put pull back now, put some distance between us while I still could.

I nudged her shoulder. “Sophie, wake up. We’re home.”

Sitting up, she rubbed her eyes. “Home?”

“My house,” I clarified.

“Oh, right.”

Paying the driver, we exited his car and stood side by side on the wet pavement outside my house.

“It rained,” she observed groggily, wrapping her arm through mine. Looking up at me with a shy smile, she added, “Thanks for today, by the way.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I had a good time,” she continued, her eyes searching my face.

“I’m glad,” I answered, refusing to meet her stare. “Be careful, the tiles can be slippery, especially in those shoes.”

Clinging tighter, she whispered, “You won’t let me fall.”

“Nope, you’re safe.”

“I am, aren’t I?” she asked as I fitted my key in the lock. “Safe?”

I dragged my eyes to hers. I couldn’t be sure, but suddenly it felt like we weren’t talking about slippery walkways anymore, that there was hidden meaning in her words … and mine.

“Always,” I intoned, pulling her through the door and into me. With her palms resting flat against my chest, I was sure she could feel my heart hammering against my sternum.

Despite the pep talk I’d just given myself, I couldn’t deny how I felt about this woman. She was in my veins. I knew she didn’t trust me not to break her heart, not yet, but I was just as vulnerable. And even though I was probably setting myself up for further rejection, I needed her to know she had a home here. That there was a place for her in my life if she’d only let herself take it.

“You’re safe with me Sophie,” I repeated, my lips dropping to hers. “All you have to do is let me in. I’m yours for the taking.” I kissed her again. “Please, take me.”
