EXCERPT

“I have found the Blades,” she stated evenly.

The crystal-coved hall fell completely silent. The guards ceased their advance. Not a sound was to be heard. It seemed even the walls were holding their breath. All eyes were sealed on her. Awe mingled with surprise.

“But the Blades,” Daerlot said, barely finding his voice, “were never meant to come to the elves.”

Memsy released a short sigh and closed her eyes. When she finally opened them, sadness etched her features, and a skim of tears brimmed her eyes.

“They did not come to me, Dala.” The endearing nickname in the midst of such grand company bespoke the grief now apparent on her face.

The patriarch’s brow furrowed as he tried to discern her meaning. After a moment, Memsy sniffed to stifle a sob and then turned back toward the grand entrance.

“Adianna,” she called gently.

“Adi…” Daerlot’s breath caught in his throat.

A long mass of auburn locks framing the round face of a child poked out from around one great golden door.

Memsy advanced a few steps toward the child, and bending over, she extended her hand, as if enticing a timid animal to approach. Then she gently spoke, “Adianna, my love. Come to Memsy.”

Thus invited, a smile spread over the little face. Relieved of fear, the child emerged through the door. Dressed in simple peasant’s garb of a mouse-brown smock and white apron, she was little more than four.

When the girl reached her side, Memsy lovingly ran her hand over the reddish-brown curls and smiled at her warmly. Heaving a deeper sigh than before, the sorci turned back to the platform, keeping her hand on the child’s shoulder.

“My Lords,” Memsy announced dolefully. “This is the legendary Durluki.” She then gazed back down, smiling sadly at the bright, trusting face, and mused, “The Blades Bearer.”
