We will all struggle and face suffering at some point in our lives. In this
important book, Dr. Dillon Caswell, PT, DPT, SCS takes you through why
suffering is necessary and why the shift in our healthcare field from
transformational to transactional has prolonged the state of suffering and
is leading to a systematic healthcare collapse.

Daily you are given misinformation and flat-out lies, such as your
vertebrae are out of place, opioids are needed for pain control, the pain
experience is due to your degenerating parts, and, phew, we could keep going
on! People are giving up their purpose, life-long athlete identities, and
what makes them live wholeheartedly due to poor advice from respected
figures.
You are getting the message of fear, feeling of brokenness and not
being enough, and routined rejection, all summed up as the feeling of
nope.

It’s time to change that… Hope Not Nope will reshape your perspective,
thoughts and behaviors
, and equip you with an action plan by giving you the
information you need to turn all of the misinformation, rejection, and lies
– summed up as nope – into the greatest healing agent available:
Hope!!!

Praise for Hope Not Nope

“Who wants to live a life of unhappiness and suffering? If you
answered “not me”, then Hope Not Nope is a book for you! This book
perfectly taps into the enduring spirit of humanity. Dillon explains complex
physiology simply, making the book accessible to people from all walks of
life. You will find yourself nodding, laughing, and challenging your own
dogma, often within a single chapter. Each thematic chapter contains
anecdotes, key takeaways, and reflection exercises to help you move towards
a more positive existence. If you are stuck in a rut or have the desire to
make each day better than the last, then you will thoroughly enjoy Hope Not
Nope!”

-Dr. Tim Gabbett, Ph.D. Top 25 Most Impactful Sports Scientists of All
Time

“The greatest superpower human beings possess is hope – this guide
will teach you how to flex your superpower daily. Dillon masterfully
explains how to channel and direct your suffering experiences into a
position of hope. You’ll learn how to microdose your mindset like an
optimist on a daily basis and change your perspective when life’s illusions
are defying you. As the author likes to suggest, you always have choices in
life, but this book is worthy of a full send!”

Dr. Craig Lindell, PT, DPT, CSCS. Co-Founder of [P]rehab

“Dillon is uniquely positioned in the fitness industry to bring a
vital message to lifelong athletes everywhere – that we must learn how to
empower ourselves in order to create lasting positive change. So many former
athletes surrender to an identity of being ‘broken’ or washed up, and their
health and self-worth suffer in the process. In this important book, Dillon
lays out a clear and actionable path to lead us through some necessary
suffering in order to reclaim our physical and mental health, and an ability
to continue to participate in the activities that bring us joy.”

– Adam Rogers, CF-1. Coach of the World’s Top CrossFit Athletes at Training
Think Tank

“More than ever people need to feel encouraged and empowered in the
modern healthcare world. I was driven away from a career in medicine and
towards a career in health and fitness in order to take part in the
empowerment movement and give clients tools to take into their own life in
order to reclaim their health, confidence, and control over their health
outcomes. Dr. Caswell shines a meaningful light on this dilemma that people
face. He highlights the problem in a way that can allow anyone to recognize
how the system is failing and then supports the reader with tools and
frameworks to enhance their health outcomes and reclaim their birthright of
a healthy and athletic body.”

– Marcus Filly, Founder & Owner of Functional Bodybuilding”

EXCERPT

Foreword

I have had the pleasure of working with Dillon Caswell for several years. It is one of the many benefits that have come from having ALS. Yes, I have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Lou Gerig’s Disease, my darkest childhood nightmare, and still, there are benefits. I call it not a disease but a condition. I don’t see it as a permanent state. Dillon has helped me—, as he will most certainly help you— realize that perspective is everything. As you will learn from the doctor who changed the protocol for spinal cord injuries in WWII veterans, being paralyzed is not the end of life, it’s the beginning of a new one. It’s something Dillon would say, and does say in this important book.

I say important because seldom hasit is rare to hold such a comprehensive, on on-point, and powerful compilation of all that is positive, been writtenin my hands. I have to go back to The Power of Positive Thinking, written by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale in 1952, to find its equal. Dillon examines and explains every aspect of what it takes to be a modern- day champion. While there is plenty of “positive thinking” in chapters like “Building the Brian Brain” and “Pain Versus Performance,” this book is also grounded.  tThere are mathematical and scientific illuminations in chapters like “Bayesian Prediction Models” and “Movement is Medicine” that most athletes have not even considered, let alone contemplated.

Maybe best of all is that this tapestry of self-help is woven together with insightful filaments of humor, history, and cutting -edge knowledge in the fields of sports medicine and psychology. Dillon takes you on a quest for the true father of “bass-ball,” a.k.a baseball, and it’s not Abner Doubleday. He recounts employs a little knownthe classic apocryphal argument between Albert Einstein and his university philosophy professor about the existence of God. And he shatters myths like the benefits of icing an injury and static stretching, which are nearly universal from youth sports all the way up to the professional ranks.

I know first-hand that Dillon Caswell exudes positive energy in everything he says and does. He is living proof of the theories he espouses. This book, brilliantly written, is a must-read for any athlete of any gender, of any age, and parents, coaches, and health care workers as well. It will be your blueprint, your guide, and your inspiration.

Prologue

My initial mission as a healthcare provider was to end suffering. A bold mission that was, as one of my colleagues pointed out, pretty stupid. She politely challenged me that suffering is needed. Suffering is part of the human experience. Enduring that suffering is what creates growth and character. I reflected that night and to this day on that conversation. Why did I want to end suffering completely?

I was angry. I was angry with how my family, specifically one of the greatest women on Earth, my mom, was treated within the healthcare system. I was angry with how I was treated within the system. I was angry with how my patients and friends were treated within the system. I was angry that people were giving up activities they love because poor advice left them feeling fragile and broken. I was angry with the lies being sold and how the field became transactional versus transformational.

But prolonged anger does not solve; it leads to vengeance, and vengeance hurts in the long run. This book initially was my journal, my outlet, and my solution to let go of the resentment and reshape my perspective. In the process, probably to no surprise, my mission needed an update.

Mission 2.0: We all must suffer; however, we do not need to suffer for as long as we have been led to believe.

In the process of societal, technological, and financial progression, we have seemed to regress on the basic principle of truly caring for one another. Healthcare systems are pressured for productivity dictated by numbers, not outcomes. The Hippocratic oath states to do no harm. However, daily, I encountered patients who had been harmed. They were being stripped of the factor that creates the greatest healing: hope.

We all face a fork in the path at some point in our lives, where we can spend our time complaining, or we can try to be a solution. This is my attempt to be part of the solution. To be part of the solution, one must sacrifice. I promise this work will not be perfect, but I promise many sacrifices were made to put it together. Not just my sacrifices, but all the sacrifices each individual has made to endure suffering, open up, be vulnerable and courageous, and share their stories with me.

I am not sure the overall impact this work will have or who it will reach, but I trust that it will be delivered to the right hands. I trust that it will inspire a pathway to hope for those suffering. I trust that our combined suffering becomes fruitful if it positively impacts one other person. I’m hoping that person will be you.

In her debut collection, Theresa Braun explores the inner workings of the
human heart and what it is we most desire—forgiveness, acceptance,
love, fame, or merely to escape who we really are. Whether we are battling
ghosts, demons, mythical monsters, the past, or other dimensions, we are
really facing the deepest parts of ourselves. These thirteen tales of horror
and dark fantasy may appear to be a matter of good versus evil, but they are
all a reflection of the hidden corners of the soul that are often shades of
broken darkness. The characters in these stories must face their inner and
outer terrors, or else suffer the consequences.

absolute confidence in her, that she will never turn Rogue. But she is
afraid to trust that. How can she give in to the magnetic attraction between
them, when it could mean very Liam’s life?

Excerpt

Despite the chill of the early November morning, Liam McConnell let down
the window of his Jeep Compass. Grateful to be leaving behind the pollution
of Manhattan, he took in deep breaths of the crisp, fresh air.

After spending the past year doing his internship in New York City, he was
more than ready to get out of the city, into the semi-rural, heavily wooded
areas of the Hudson Valley, an hour’s drive north.

All his worldly belongings were packed into the back of his Jeep.
He’d been assured there was an inn nearby where he could stay until he
found a place to live, so he’d just thrown everything in his vehicle
and headed north. The meeting he had in half an hour wasn’t quite an
interview, nor quite a first day at work. The North American Council for
Shifters had arranged for him to do his residency at the Country Veterinary
Clinic, so he had the job, but this was his first meeting with the partners
of the practice.

All of them were human, but they knew about shifters.

He had to admit that curiosity rode him about those in the clinic, or
associated with it. Two of the human partners were engaged to Others; one to
a Djinn, of all things! And another was engaged to Katerina Kazakis, the
fashion designer who was also granddaughter to the Warden of the
Northeastern U.S. The entire, huge, Kazakis clan were Maine Coon cat
shifters, everyone knew that. Katerina’s two siblings also lived
nearby, and there was apparently a clowder of bobcat shifters in the
area.

It was unusual for so many cat shifters to be congregated in one area, and
he couldn’t help grinning. The grin faded, though, as he thought of
the grim news he bore. The Warden, Maroulla Kazakis, hadn’t wanted to
relay the news over the phone, so he was charged with delivering it in
person.

His GPS chirped at him to exit the Parkway, and he flicked on his turn
signal. Ten minutes later, following the directions from his GPS, he turned
into the driveway of the clinic. It was a long, low brick building with
cheerfully painted shutters. Approaching the clinic, the driveway split left
and right to parking lots on either side, while a sign post sent dog owners
to

the left, and cat owners to the right. O-kaaay, separate entrances for dogs
and cats. Good idea, and one he hadn’t seen before. Amused, he turned
to the left, and parked outside a door that bore a large sign
announcing,

“DOGS.”

Entering the clinic, he noted with approval the cleanliness of the wide,
well-lit hallway leading to a cheerful reception desk where three ladies
were stationed, one on the phones and two immersed in patient charts.

“Liam McConnall,” he told the pretty redhead who greeted him.
“I’ve an appointment at nine.”

“Oh yes!” She put down the stack of folders she’d been
putting into some kind of order, and came out from behind the counter.
“They’re expecting you. Let me take you back… is it Dr.
Shelton’s office?” She broke off to ask one of the other women,
shook her head.

“No, they decided on Dr. McCandliss’ office. It’s
bigger.”

“No it’s not,” the third woman put in. “It’s
just emptier.”

All three women laughed.

“That’s because Dr. McCandliss has another office in the barn
out back, and that’s what he uses,” the red-head explained,
leading him down another hallway where rooms branched off left and right.
“He sees horses and livestock, usually. I’m Tamera Austen, by
the way.”

“Nice to meet you.”

Opening a door at the end of the corridor, she ushered him in.

“Dr. McConnell is here,” she told them. Then, giving him an
encouraging smile, she turned and headed back to reception.

Liam blinked a bit, not having expected quite so many people. It took a
moment to realize that his first impression of a crowd was erroneous; there
were only four people rising to their feet as he entered. It only seemed
crowded in the small office that contained only a table and some chairs. The
table, however, contained a large carafe from which the enticing aroma of
coffee arose, and a tray with cream and sugar, cups and stir straws, as well
as a bakery box of pastries.

He was greeted first by a young woman with short, sleek black hair, and the
wide golden eyes that marked her as a Kazakis.

“You must be Katerina,” he told her. “Your grandmother
would have looked just like you when she was your age.”

She smiled, but seemed puzzled, staring at him in what appeared to be
confusion. Then she shook her head, and turned to the others.

“Yes, I’m Katerina.” She turned and gestured to the
others. “And this is Troy Shelton, Suzanne MacPherson, two of the
partners here, and Suzanne’s husband, Mac.”

“Please, help yourself to some coffee and pastry if you like,”
the big vet, Troy, said to him, but Katerina was still staring at him
oddly.

“You’re an intern?” she finally blurted out in astonished
tones.

Liam laughed. “I get that a lot. I felt like an old dude when I was
in vet school, compared to the others. But I wanted to finish medical school
first.”

Suzanne looked as bewildered as Katerina felt. “Medical
school?”

Liam stared at them, and they stared back. He shook his head with a
humorous quirk of his lips.

“I’m guessing Maroulla didn’t forward you my
resume?”

They all looked at each other.

“I didn’t even think to ask,” Troy admitted.

“Oh, my God, this is so unprofessional of us,” Suzanne dropped
her head in her hands.

Katerina noted that Liam was looking more amused than offended.

“In our defense,” Troy told Liam, “We’re all still
reeling a bit from finding out that there is such a thing as
shapeshifters.”

“Are such things as,” Katerina corrected helpfully.

“Let’s try this again.” Troy stood up, holding out his
hand. “Troy Shelton.

They shook hands and Suzanne followed suit. “Suzanne MacPherson, and
this is my husband, Mac. Douglas McCandliss, our other partner, planned to
be here, but he had an emergency call.”

“He’s the equine vet, isn’t he?” Liam asked.

Troy nodded. “He has to go to most of his patients, rather than them
come to us.”

Mac held out his hand. “I work at another clinic, so I’m not
here in any official capacity.”

“You’re totally here out of curiosity,” Suzanne told her
husband, and he laughed, not bothering to deny the allegation.

Polly’s Gold (Sisters Three 2)

The lighted windows of Gravesend lay far behind me. Ahead the ice storm had
transformed the marshes into a dark frozen wasteland.

I too had been transformed. That realisation diverted me from the pain of
frozen limbs, and the despair that threatened to unhinge me.

Who was I before?

Just a few days ago I’d been a daughter, a sister, mistress of the
Golden Bell pub, and known throughout London’s East End as the Bell
Gang leader’s moll, “Queen of the Bells,” or less
generously: Bill’s cunt.

Who had I become?

I’m still a daughter and sister, but events over the last few days,
much like an unexpected storm from the North sweeping all before it, have
altered my state in the world and within myself too. Bill had been brutally
murdered, and I was alone, with no protection in the savage world of the
docklands. By avenging Bill’s murder, I’d become a killer, a
vicious one at that. Since departing the pub without a word, I was probably
mistress of the Golden Bell no longer, and the new leader of the gang, Isiah
Spike, a nasty weasel-faced sod if ever there was one, wouldn’t
countenance my absence, and would punish me for it, if he ever got the
chance. Lastly by trudging through this freezing wilderness, I’d
turned treasure hunter.

Thanks to the late hour, and the driving sleet, the road out of Gravesend
was deserted. I’d been plodding along this forsaken stretch for a full
half hour after being deposited by a tiler’s dray at the end of
Norfolk Road. The wind howled, the icy rain pattered on my oilskin hood, and
the cold air rasped my throat. My nose was blocked and aching in the cold.
Except for my frozen face, Bill’s coat, hood and cape kept my body
dry, if not warm. Inside Bill’s wet and now ruined boots, my feet were
like numb blocks of wood. My complete costume, even down to the silk
drawers, were Bill’s. I’d decided a man would attract less
attention than a woman here on the southern reaches of the Thames and had
dressed accordingly.

The image of Bill’s mutilated body flooded my eyes with freezing
tears. He’d only been dead a few days, murdered and defiled by a fiend
in human form, a madman named James Polk. Bill, my lover and protector, had
been the ruthless leader of the Bell Gang, and with his death my position
was null and void. The pretenders to the throne had fought it out, and the
mollisher of the dead king was surplus to requirements, as they already had
their cunts ready to hand. My offer to continue running the pub with Hannah,
the cousin of Bill’s lieutenant, also dead by the same hand, was my
one chance of staying alive, at least for the next few days.

I’d taken my bloody revenge on Polk. Yet knowing Bill’s killer
was dead brought me no joy, just a cold hollowness in my chest. The chapter
that Bill occupied in my life had been closed so quickly, so emphatically,
I’d no time to mourn, and I expected my present task would simply
delay the final release of grief.

Just a few days ago, one by one, my sisters: Molly, the factory girl, Dolly
the wagtail, and I, had been kidnapped by the monster and his henchman.
We’d been held captive on an airship, and threatened with death to
reveal a secret we did not possess. In a desperate and savage fight
we’d overcome our abductors and found ourselves adrift in danger of
being lost. Luckily the River Police and marines in a military airship from
Shornemead Fort had rescued us before we had floated out to sea. I’d
been held at Scotland Yard for a day for prolonged and incessant
questioning. Inspector Astonberry knew we were lying about the real
circumstances of Polk’s death, but we stayed true to our story, though
it was a complete fiction. The inspector knew that Bill was up to his neck
in something that had led to his slaughter and, to his obvious chagrin, he
could not trip me up to discover what it was.

That was because I did not know. Bill had hidden a sack of gold sovereigns
from me, and when I discovered it he wouldn’t tell me where the money
had come from. That was out of character as he was usually so proud of his
little schemes. I suspected this had been what got him killed. But what had
he done for it, and who had paid him? Had it been a normal crime, so to
speak, such as burglary, or extortion? Or had he been, as the inspector
suspected, tied up in the traitorous buying of stolen secrets from the
Allenby factory? I didn’t know. Polk had taken Bill’s gold, and
I’d taken it back, and held it for a few minutes before making it
safe, or so I hoped.

I missed Bill so. My body ached for him…
