Madison — My parents died and left me with my older brother. At one time,
he’d been a nice guy. Then he let drugs and alcohol destroy his life.
Now I walk on eggshells every day, and hope for a way out of this nightmare.
Growing up, no one wanted to be friends with the deaf girl, much less date
her. Now I’m an adult and haven’t been on a single date in my
life. I should run from the big biker called Truth… so why does he
make me feel so safe?

Truth — Women are all the same. Can’t trust them. I’ve been
screwed over enough times to know better than to fall for the lies that drip
from their lips like honey. But Madison doesn’t seem to be the same as
all the others. It’s not just because she’s deaf. There’s
a sweetness to her, a vulnerability that makes me want to protect her. I
never thought I’d get the chance, but once I find out what her brother
is up to, I’ll stop at nothing to make sure no one hurts Madison.
Whether she knows it or not, she’s mine.

WARNING: Guaranteed happily ever after, no cliffhanger, no cheating.
Recommended for readers 18+ due to adult situations, language, and
violence.

EXCERPT

I stashed my purse and stepped into the bathroom to freshen up. I splashed
water on my face, used a wet paper towel to wipe down my arms and the back
of my neck, then cleaned my armpits. Thankfully I kept a small bag stashed
here with some deodorant and body spray. I used both before smoothing my
hair and went to get a cup of coffee. I poured the strong brew and peered at
the choices in the glass cabinet.

Mrs. Johnson caught my attention and signed her question. What will it be
this morning?

I signed and spoke my answer, even though I knew my voice could be loud and
off-putting to some people. “Blueberry.”

She smiled and gave me a nod. Once she’d plated the muffin for me, I
took my breakfast to the office and got started on my work. I paused between
tasks to nibble on the muffin and take a swallow or two of coffee before
getting back to it. I helped with her bookkeeping, inventory, and organized
her files. As Mrs. Johnson once said, she loved the people and baking part
of her business, but not so much the rest of it.

I couldn’t call the vendors for her, but I did tackle the emails that
came through, and I maintained her store website. In fact, I needed to go
snap a few pictures for the shop’s social media accounts. I grabbed my
phone and peered out into the front of the shop. Only two men stood at the
counter, both wearing the black leather vests of the local motorcycle
club.

Even though they made me a little nervous, I pasted a smile on my face and
stepped out front. Neither one acknowledged me, even though I did feel
someone’s eyes watching me as I took a few pictures. If it
hadn’t been for Mrs. Johnson’s frantic waving, which I caught
from the corner of my eye, the shouted hey would have scared the crap out of
me. While it wasn’t as loud to me as it would be for others, I still
hadn’t expected to hear someone speaking behind me. And for his voice
to come through so clearly, I knew he’d yelled the word.

I paused and turned to face the men. One of them was speaking, but he was
talking so fast, I couldn’t catch everything. I had a hearing aid in
one ear, which allowed me to hear a small amount. Still, I relied heavily on
lip reading and sign language. Except this man’s mouth was covered by
a moustache and beard. I couldn’t make out what he was saying. I tried
to turn my hearing aid up a little.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you,” I said. The
man’s eyebrows rose, and he came closer, moving slowly. Had he not
realized I was deaf? I’d thought that was what Mrs. Johnson had been
so frantic about.

“Why are you taking pictures?” he asked slowly, making sure to
enunciate each word, and speaking loudly.

I showed him my phone, where I’d been in the process of loading a few
images to Instagram for the Etta Mae’s account. I turned so he could
watch as I typed, added my hashtags, then posted the images. Next, I did the
same for Facebook and Twitter. I’d save TikTok for another time, since
I’d need to create a video of the items on display. I never liked
doing that when people were present.

The other man came over and started signing. He didn’t mean to scare
you. We didn’t realize you couldn’t hear.

I signed my response back. It’s okay.

“Can you say that out loud?” the first man asked. “I
don’t know how to use sign language.”

“I said it’s okay.” The way Mrs. Johnson winced, I knew
my volume had been a little too loud. “Sorry.”

“I’m Truth,” the man said. “And this is
Knuckles.”

The one he called Knuckles signed his answer as Truth spoke. So I did the
same, both speaking and signing. “I’m Madison.”

The Hidden Cries Behind Her Smile is a book filled with journal entries
from one woman’s journey of discovering that she was living in an
emotionally, mentally and verbally abusive marriage. In this book you will
find some of her deepest and rawest emotions as she began to unpack all of
the pain that this abuse had left on her mind and her heart. This type of
abuse is one that is not talked about a lot because you cannot see the marks
that it leaves on one’s body. In the pages of this book the writer
paints a picture of the wounds and the scars that emotional, mental and
verbal abuse does to a person’s heart and mind. You can almost hear
her cries as you read through her journal entries, the cries that were
hidden behind her smile for so long.

The Hidden Cries Behind Her Smile tablet

EXCERPT

Preface

Alone … is a horrible place to be and a devastating thing to feel. The feeling of complete seclusion can tear a person apart. It can leave a gaping hole so big in your heart that you feel extremely hollow inside. We were never meant to live this life that we have been given alone. Many times, we feel as though no one will ever understand the trauma that we have been through. We think, If only people knew what I was going through, they would think so differently of me. Our walls go up when we feel as though no one would understand. The walls begin to form layer by layer until we are barricaded behind walls within our hearts as thick as Fort Knox. It becomes nearly impossible for anyone to chisel the walls down and enter the sacred parts of us that are tucked so safely away. I want you to know from the depths of my heart that you are not alone. You are seen by a person who understands what you are going through. The hidden emotional, mental, and verbal abuse that you are enduring may be hidden from the naked eyes around you, but I see you. I see the seclusion that you feel. I see the suffering that you are going through. And even though you feel completely alone in a world filled with billions of people, you are not alone. Not only do I see you, but so does the creator of this world that we live in.

This is a book filled with many of the emotions that I felt on this journey to discovering that I indeed have lived in a marriage where I have been abused. I denied it for so long because my husband didn’t lay a hand on me. I thought, This is not abuse! He is just mean to me, but he doesn’t hit me. There are women who are really being abused, and I am lucky that I am not being hit! The denial kept me trapped in a lie and living on autopilot. Emotional, mental, and verbal abuse are not discussed enough. This hidden and silent abuse is stuffed away in a corner with a drop cloth over it, just hoping that we can hide it and no one will see the damage it causes. This abuse isn’t taken seriously because we can’t see the wounds and scars that it leaves on the heart, soul, and mind of the victim. Most of the time, the victim doesn’t even realize they are in an abusive relationship because this form of abuse isn’t talked about enough.

Let me give you the definition of emotional, mental, and verbal abuse, taken from a Google search:

Emotional abuse … involves nonphysical behavior that belittles another person and can include insults, put downs, verbal threats or other tactics that make the victim feel threatened, inferior, ashamed or degraded. Emotional abuse can involve any of the following:

Verbal abuse: yelling at you, insulting you or swearing at you.

Rejection: constantly rejecting your thoughts, ideas and opinions.

Gas lighting: making you doubt your own feelings and thoughts, and even your sanity, by manipulating the truth.

Emotional abuse can take many forms. Three general patterns of abusive behavior include aggressing, denying, and minimizing. (Being aggressive towards you, denying they were aggressive, minimizing your feelings of pain from their behavior).

Being in an emotionally abusive relationship can impact your life in so many negative ways, leaving you feeling completely unsure of any thought that you may have. You begin to second-guess everything that you feel, and your confidence is completely destroyed, for your abuser will minimize everything you say and make you out to be the bad guy in every single situation.

You are not alone!

I see you!

God sees you!

As you read the pages of this book, my prayer is that you will feel validated. My prayer is that you will begin to come out of hiding and have the courage and strength to know that you are not alone. My prayer is that the walls around you will begin to crumble, and you will begin to know that you are beautiful. You are loved. You are cherished. You are valuable. You have a powerful voice. And you are seen. I see you. God sees you.

In each journal entry, you will hear my heart’s cry as I began to understand exactly what I was going through as the veil was being lifted from my eyes that I was indeed being abused. I pray that you feel seen and understood by me. You will also find Bible verses included in some of my entries, God’s personal love letters to us, which I pray will help you feel seen by Him.

There is such bravery and courage when you step into healing and seek counsel. I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to find a safe place to unpack your heart, whether it is with a counselor or a pastor. You will find a new strength welling up within you when you find the courage to go to that place you are afraid of that is buried deep beneath the surface of your heart and soul. A place that is hidden from the world and oftentimes hidden even from you. A place that is sacred and guarded with thick steel walls and padlocks on the doors. A place where pain and heartache reside. A place where your hurts have been placed so that you could survive. A place where tears are hidden away because there was no validation for your feelings. A place where rivers of sorrow are on the verge of escape because you know you must release it or else you will never make it. It is not weakness to seek help! It takes so much strength to go into a place of such despair and to repair all that is broken. It takes courage to face the things that have been stored away for so long. It takes bravery to walk into a vault of unknown boxes and stand before each one and unpack them. It takes a massive amount of strength, courage, and bravery to lay down the shield that has been protecting you for so long and face the heartache that has been hidden inside of you. I believe in you! You are worth the fight to heal! I pray that you discover your voice as you read the pages of this book. I pray that you feel seen as you begin to unpack all that is within you.

She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are

the God who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13 NIV)

Interview Questions and Answers

  1. Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do.

My name is Anneke Barnard. I am 23 years old, turning 24 in June. I have three brothers, an older brother who is 25, a younger brother who is 22, and a twin brother. I have lived in Portland Maine my whole life, attended Portland High School and graduated in 2017 then attended the University of Southern Maine and graduated in 2021 with a bachelor’s in English and as a certified teacher for grades 7-12th. Currently I am working at my old high school as a dedicated sub. Though I love working with students my true passion is writing and telling stories.

  1. Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes?

My journey as a writer began when I was young, I was creating characters and stories as young as eight but it wasn’t until high school that I thought about doing it for a living. I started and didn’t complete numerous books but finally finished my first when I was a freshman in college which I very quickly scraped. However, though I did not end up pursuing that book it showed me that I do have the ability to finish one. In the summer of 2020 when we were all stuck in quarantine I started my next book which ended up becoming the book I am promoting now Heaven’s Ghosts. I finished the first draft that summer but because my final year of college was coming up and I was making that final push to graduate I did not get to spend a ton of time editing it until the following summer. I decided to self publish because I wanted to retain the rights to my book and have more control and say over the final product. However, I realized I did not love the marketing process, mostly because it took away time from writing so I decided I would go a different route for my next book which is how I found MindStir Media. My second book is a sequel to Heaven’s Ghosts and after finding MindStir I decided to do marketing for Heaven’s Ghosts before going through the process of publishing my next book.

My writing process starts with the spark of an idea which can be as simple as “a deaf boy who can hear the voices of spirits” and if I really like a certain idea then I start the process of developing that idea. When I start developing an idea into a novel the first thing I do is figure out the characters. Who are the people that are going to lead this story? To me characters are the most important part of any story because they are what commands the attention of the audience. I’m an avid reader and whenever I read a book it is the characters that pull me in, so when I set out to write my own it’s characters that I focus on primarily. After I have a good sense of who the characters are, I move on to the plot of the story and try to map out the main events of the story. When I am writing a mystery I have to map out both the crime that was committed which means figuring out the who, what, when, where, and why of the crime, while also mapping out the investigation the characters conduct. I have to plant red herrings and clues without making the ending too obvious. Also, with this specific book I had to figure out the roles of the spirits and the rules of the paranormal world and Sam’s abilities; if Kip had remembered who killed him there would have been no story so I had to figure out why he would not remember. Eventually, no matter what I’m writing, it gets to a point where I can’t plan anymore and I just have to start writing. I find that once I start writing there are things that come up that I never planned to have but from the process of finally writing the story they pop up and ultimately make the story better and more complete. When I start writing I usually hand write the first draft. I do this for a couple reasons: One, there is something about the act of putting pen on paper that helps my mind focus on the task at hand, and two when I go to type up what I’ve written I find myself editing at the same time and it’s easier for me to catch holes in the plot. For example, sometimes I might have a backstory for a side character but it changes as I start writing so what I write about them in the first chapter might contradict what I write in the last, and if I hand write the first draft I can catch and fix this error much easier.

  1. Tell me about your Book (that you want to talk about)

Heaven’s Ghosts is the first in a series of books that center around tween and teen characters who solve mysteries in their small town Heaven, Maine (think Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Scooby Doo). In Heaven’s Ghosts you are introduced to the characters who make up this group of sleuths: Sam, Cleo, Vi, Jasper, Kip, and Leo. What is unique about this group is that not all of them are alive. Kip and Leo are both spirits who communicate with the others through Sam who is a deaf boy that can hear and see spirits. This book follows Sam and the others as they investigate Kip’s murder and in the process unravel a thirty-seven year old mystery. My goal with Heaven’s Ghosts was not only to write a mystery but also a coming of age book, so you have a group of kids solving mysteries but they are also figuring out who they are. Sam is the narrator and the main character. I decided to write from his perspective because he is the glue to the group. He is the one that connects the dead and the living since he’s the one that can communicate with the dead.

This is the write up on the back of the book and on Amazon:

A young boy’s apparent accidental drowning, a mysterious drifter, the town recluse, a deaf boy who can hear the voices of spirits, and the mystery that connects them all.

Samson Roe comes from a family of fake psychics, his mother being the most recent perpetrator of the con. However, Sam has a secret that he has not revealed to anyone, he can speak with ghosts. The only problem is that Sam is deaf, so though he can hear the voices of the dead the living are silent to him. When a boy named Kip Green drowns in the picturesque town of Heaven, Maine nobody suspects anything sinister; that is until Kip makes a visit to Samson and reveals that he believes his death to be anything but an accident. Together they begin to investigate what really happened and in the process begin to unravel a thirty-seven year old mystery.

  1. Book Genre

YA Mystery; Coming of age; YA fiction

  1. Appropriate age for readers

I wrote this book geared to middle school students so it’s primary target is kids ages 12-15 but I wrote it so that anyone of any age can enjoy it. The reading level I geared towards a younger audience but I tried to make the story engaging for any age. For those younger than 12 I would suggest a parent/guardian reading it first and deciding if their child can read it. It has maybe two swear words but it does deal with topics such as murder and grief.

  1. Any message for our readers

This story is as much about the journey of self discovery as it is about investigating a murder. Though the mystery does take center stage in many ways it is about how Kip’s death and the investigation into his death impacts each character, especially Sam. I also want people to know that the main character and narrator is deaf which I chose to do for a couple reasons. One reason is that I love the duality it creates in his character and how it makes him a bridge between two worlds and cultures – the dead and the living, the deaf and the hearing. Also, he is loosely based off of my mom, in that my mom grew up with two deaf parents but was hearing herself and she often acted as a translator for them. She, much like Sam, acted as a bridge.
