Each and every person is a subject with a range of emotions; through
experiences, people’s perception of thoughts vary. Every emotion
has a different purpose and the acknowledgment of the feeling affects the
impact on the victim. My lucid ideas about similar emotions blended with
other people’s exposure serves as a fine contrast and an intriguing
viewpoint. To further understand this outlook, I watch, listen, and
interpret these emotions through other people’s experiences in an
effort to articulate them, in hopes that I will be able to find the places
where these different shades of blue originate and lie within.

The Truth About Words

Empty words fill the pages

Rusting smells sprinkle through

Underlying thoughts

And stolen lies

Candlelight saviors

But trembling fingers

Refute the weight of the sky

Ghostly stains etch the paper

Desperation claws through truth

Foolish ones with hubris and hauteur

Tramp upon this lonely surface

The power of a single word

Rob Jeffers has it all: fame, money, and the life of a rock and roll star.
Frank Peters is a regular guy, a newspaper reporter who just happens to have
a passing acquaintance with the Great Jeffers. As Jeffers’s career shoots
up, Peters’s fortunes follow in his wake.

And when Jeffers passes away at the height of his fame, Peters’s life
begins a steady unravelling. Until a chance encounter on a minor story gives
him a new outlook on the celebrity lifestyle, and new hope for his own
future.

Excerpt

Off to my right, a slight, average-sized guy came running along. He was
wearing the pants and vest of a denim leisure suit, a garish, flowered
polyester/Hawaiian shirt with the first five buttons opened up and sandals.
Skidding to a stop in front of me, he looked about as confused as I felt at
the moment.

“’Scuse me,” he said, “is this the place for the
concert?”

I looked around at all the people flocking in our direction, listened to
the squealing of the collection of cuties on the other side of the
door.

“Yeah,” I said, “but good luck getting in. The place is
packed.”

“Really? Cool!” He took off his mirrored sunglasses, and for
the first time, I saw the eyes that, in years to come, would stare out from
a billion or so album covers.

“Hey,” he said, “you a student here?”

“Yeah, but…”

“You think you can show me how to get in? Like there’s a
service entrance or something, isn’t there? I’m with the band,
and I’m running late.”

I clenched up. One of the oldest con lines in the world is “I’m
with the band.” But something in the man’s look told me to take
a chance.

“I think I can get you in, but I need something in
return.”

“Yeah?” Now the “guy with the band” seemed uneasy.
“What’s that?”

“Well, you see,” I said, “I’m with the student
paper…”

On Sale for $0.99 for a Limited Time

Sometimes love is worth the wait.

Sara Carlisle and Charlie Rhodes are complete opposites. Oil and water.
Chalk and cheese.

Before Sara even meets Charlie, she hates him. He’s insulted her best
friend -a woman Sara considers family- and that is unforgivable. In person
he proves to be just as obnoxious and insufferable as she’d anticipated.
And, as far as she’s concerned, the fact that he’s tall and muscular with an
accent to die for is not enough to redeem him. Charlie Rhodes is an arrogant
A–hole (with a capital A!) and that’s all there is to it!

For his part, Charlie thinks Sara is a conceited pain in the arse. A prissy
princess to the nth degree. It becomes his prerogative to get under her skin
for the sheer pleasure of riling her up. He feels genuine enjoyment in the
face of her frustration, and he makes no secret of it. Besides, she gives as
good as she gets!

Fundamentally opposed in every way, it’s obvious to those around them that
they’re not going to get along.

But unfortunately, thanks to their respective families, they are stuck in
each other’s lives for the foreseeable future. Being civil is as good as it
is going to get…or is it?

When their relationship turns from reluctant acquaintances to red hot
lovers, they find it’s good.

Really good.

What could possibly go wrong?

In a slow-burn romance that follows hot on the heels of Handle With Care*,
Sara and Charlie discover that you really can’t rush romance.

*Both Handle With Care and You Can’t Hurry Love can be read as standalone
novels in the expanding Jukebox Collection series.

EXCERPT

“I had my reasons for avoiding serious relationships,” it seemed Everett wasn’t going to be discouraged, “but what’s stopping you?”

Charlie cast his gaze to the ceiling. “For fuck’s sake.”

“I watched at least five women attempt to get your attention at the airport the other day, so it’s not your looks.”

He knew Everett had always been a little jealous of his taller, broader physique and his naturally golden coloured hair, so he snorted. “Thanks, Rhett.”

“I’m serious, Charlie. You’re forty-two-”

“Please don’t remind me.”

“–and I can’t remember the last time you were seeing someone.”

It was Charlie’s turn to throw his brother a flat look. “One: we’ve not really had the sort of relationship where we talked about this stuff until recently,” he began, counting on his fingers for emphasis, “and two…well, alright, look, I’ve had a bit of a dry spell, but, like you, casual was always my thing. Is my thing.”

“Uh huh.” He hated that Everett didn’t sound convinced.

Scowling, Charlie demanded, “Did Mum put you up to this?”

He knew he was onto something when Everett shifted his gaze.

“I knew it!” Downing the last of his beer, Charlie stood up to deposit the bottle into the recycling bin in the kitchen.

“Shh!” Everett was frowning at him now. “Do you want to wake the baby?”

“If it’ll get you and Mum off my back about fucking settling down?” Charlie asked rhetorically as he ambled back to the couch and dropped down heavily. “Yes.”

“You wake her, you get to look after her.” The other man shot back, before asking, “Is it so wrong that we want you to be happy?”

Charlie blinked back at him, dumbstruck. “Who are you?”

“Oh, shove off.”

“No, I’m serious – you should know better than anyone that I don’t need to be in a relationship or have kids to be happy.”

“I never said you had to have kids.” Everett was standing firm. “You’re getting a bit old for it anyway.”

Despite himself, Charlie cracked a grin at the unexpected ribbing. “Piss off.”

His brother’s expression softened. “Look, I get it. Being alone’s easier, right? Nobody to hurt you or get hurt by, nobody to nag you or whatever. But,” he raised his hand as Charlie moved to interrupt, “and hear me out, alright?” Charlie shut his mouth and nodded defeatedly. “It’s going to sound ridiculous, but you just need the right person.”

Given that he’d already heard all about how effortless and easy Everett thought being with Gemma was, Charlie decided he didn’t need to hear him wax poetic any longer. “That’s probably true,” he acknowledged, “but I am happy as I am right now, Rhett. So lay off, alright?”

His brother pursed his lips and looked as though he wanted to beleaguer the point, but after another moment conceded, “Alright.”

“Thank you.”

“But–”

“Oh, Christ…”

“Just know that you can change your mind about it at any time, yeah?” Everett nudged his shoulder. “It won’t make you any less of a man, you stubborn git.”

Before Charlie could respond, a familiar, obnoxious voice cut in with a laugh. “That’s assuming he’s man enough to begin with.” Sara sauntered into the room, dropping a handful of shopping bags onto the floor beside the kitchen bench. She hopped up to sit on the granite surface, crossing her long legs at the ankle and chirping, “What are we talking about, anyway?”

From between gritted teeth, Charlie responded, “Nothing that concerns you, princess.” His spirits rose at the expression of distaste which flitted across her face. For some reason she despised the moniker, and so he used it frequently.

“Alright children,” Everett interrupted, narrowing his gaze at Charlie, “behave.” He stood up and crossed the room to greet Gemma with a kiss. “Did you lovely ladies enjoy your day?”

It was Jeff who answered, striding in arm-in-arm with their mother. “We did, thanks. It was just what the doctor ordered.”

“That massage was heavenly,” Beatrice agreed. “Worked out all the kinks from that Godawful flight.”

Charlie stretched his neck from side to side at the reminder. “I shoulda’ gone with you, then.”

Sara muttered something that was likely uncomplimentary under her breath, but, at Everett’s disapproving glower, Charlie bit his tongue. He was unused to this dynamic: previously, he’d been the one delivering looks like that in response to Rhett’s antics. He didn’t particularly appreciate being on the receiving end.

“How’d Zoe go?” Gemma asked. Charlie could tell she was attempting to change the topic, too, if the glare she’d sent Sara was anything to go by.

It was still strange to watch his brother switch completely into daddy mode. Everett grinned at his girlfriend. “We went to the park, came home and she tried some pureed sweet potato – she’s a fan, by the way.” At six months old, they were starting to introduce solids. How did Charlie know this? They’d regaled him and his mother with the information over dinner the previous night. His mum had lapped it up. Charlie had been bored as fuck. “And then she had a bottle and went down for her nap without any issues.”

With his mother cooing at his brother, Charlie did his best not to roll his eyes, but let his mind drift. He loved his niece, but he wasn’t all that concerned by the minutia of dealing with an infant. Glancing around the room, his gaze landed on Sara. Still perched on the kitchen bench, she was examining her fingernails, clearly just as interested in the conversation taking place as he was.

Look at that, he thought to himself with droll amusement, we’ve got something in common after all.

The moment was broken as she sensed his stare and looked up to catch him observing her. Her eyes rolled and she made a shooing motion with her perfectly manicured talons, which, he noted, were painted a vivid, cherry red. He flipped her off and looked away, wishing he could point out what a cliché she was.

Vapid cow.

Drs Lies Wouters, international organizational psychologist, advisor,

Metaphor Map and Metaphor Model of Psychological Safety in this, her first
book published in English. She shines a new light on how all leaders across
the world can use specific learnt skills to create teams where people
thrive, when they understand that it is up to them to create the

the neurobiology of our behaviour and its impact on performance,
collaboration, creativity, happiness, productivity and so much more. Backed
by relevant science, comprehensive research, real life examples and
practical exercises this book takes you step by step through the underlying

How to Create a Psychologically Safe Team Where People Thrive

How you can make the difference

T

his book is for leaders, either functional or disciplinary, who understand that they play an important role in the lives of their team members. Leaders who understand that it is up to them to create the circumstances where people feel motivated, have fun and grow. Leaders who are willing to learn how they can create these circumstances. Leaders who understand that it requires certain specific skills, which they may already have and other skills they need to develop. Leaders who are brave enough to reflect on where they are when it comes to those skills and who are willing to invest time, and maybe even money, in building them further. Are you that leader and can you accept help with how to achieve this? If so, keep reading.

You live and lead in turbulent times. While much is expected from you, the world you and your team live in is challenging to say the least. Worldly issues, such as: health; freedom; peace; equality; the environment; and sustainability, are all painfully present in our lives. Whether it is by direct impact, from family members or friends being impacted, or from the media bombarding you with messages that you are under threat. On top of all of these worldly issues, there are also the more personal ones happening that influence you and your colleagues.

In this book I explain how all these aspects impact your brain and because of that they also impact your performance, your collaboration, your creativity, your happiness and so much more. I explain how you can deal with these circumstances and what you can do to help yourself and the members in your team. This book provides you with concrete tips on how to have personal conversations with your team members that will impact their sense of safety and as a result, their motivation. I explain ways to have conversations with the team as a whole and how you can help them support each other. You will find both theory about which steps you have to take and which skills you will need. You will also find exercises that can help you build these skills. I share many examples from leaders who have been in my coaching and training sessions so you get an idea of what this theory looks like in real work environments.

After explaining the background of these steps, you will find the Psychological Safety Metaphor in Chapter 2, which you can use in conversations with your team. The metaphor has been used by hundreds of leaders who say it lowers the barrier for them and for their team members to have this conversation. Also, it helps the team members articulate where they are and what they need. In Chapter 3 and 4 we zoom into the science supporting these steps. You can read about the underlying processes in your brain and body that are supported by studies completed with functional MRIs and studies which test peoples’ saliva to understand what happens in the neurobiology. Also, the behaviour and the effects of this behaviour has been studied in psychology and I share the results of many studies that prove the connection between these steps and high performance. For each of the steps there is a separate chapter that digs deeper into that step. Each chapter offers more information, more examples and specific exercises about how to develop that skill. At the end of the book, you will find a chapter about how to use this skill in team workshops and a chapter about using the steps in coaching skills. I close with a chapter about the impact of these steps on the world and how we all play an important part in making this world better and more beautiful. Feel free to pick and choose the chapters that you find the most interesting and relevant for your own development.

Developing these skills will have a major impact on your life and on the lives of the people in your team. I want to say a big thank you also, to you for picking up this book. You reading this means that you take your leadership role seriously and you are ready to develop these skills. Whenever you reach to a place where you feel discouraged, as we all do sometimes, I invite you to reread Chapter 5, which contains practical exercises to support you when the going gets though.

Thank you for doing the work. I wish you a pleasant and inspiring learning journey with this book!

EXCERPT

“I inhaled as the flames in my stomach glowed hotter. I reached up and took off his hat. It felt smooth. I smirked as I put it on my head. My cheeks felt hot. He smiled. I felt his finger brush a stray hair out of my eye. It was like someone doused gasoline on the newly raging fire inside me.”

I am a lucky, happily married woman. Lucky enough that my husband lets me pursue my fantasies. Lucky enough that he gets turned on by them as well.”

“When James and I first decided to have an open marriage it felt so dirty but in a good way.”

“I was sinning. But was I? I wasn’t cheating or doing anything sneaky. It was the opposite really and it was so invigorating. So sexy.”

“No matter what we did or how much fun we had, I yearned for more.”

“Now, as I rode in the middle of Ethan’s truck, his cowboy hat still firmly in place on my head, Esha was alive and well in the seat right beside me. Her black tendrils were blowing in the breeze. It was as if she was pumping oxygen into my lungs, so much so that it felt like my body parts were tensing, squeezing under the pressure.”

“Desire poured from her body. It made sense that her name meant desire. She made my soul smolder.”

“She completed me as a demon, and I completed her as a human.”
