Sage City, Colorado is a beautiful but struggling town. Its mining history has dried up, leaving it only with a dark local legend that may just be more history than myth. But an East Coast developer named Lucius Furr and his team, including Lennox Dupree and Elena Cordova, might just bring salvation- or awaken a long-dormant evil.
Sawyer Shepherd is on a road trip of self-discovery- and running from a tragic past. He hopes to find himself and healing from the loss of his parents while in the deadly beauty of the Colorado Rockies. He soon finds himself caught up not only in Furr’s plans for the small town, but also an ancient and epic battle between good and evil. Guided by locals Eli Romer (the ‘town drunk’ that knows more than he lets on) and Mandy Jane (college intern with the Parks Service), Sawyer will seek to overcome the demons of his past while also trying to survive a real-life demon that seeks only to consume.
Or is it also trying to open the door for an even greater and more powerful evil?

EXCERPT

Steve shrugged and launched into the story. “Hezekiah Romer was a prospector that came to Sage City- or the loose collection of people that would become Sage City- during the Silver Boom here in the 1870s.  A lot of folks came, and it was a rough town.  In the fall of 1876, an early snowfall and subsequent avalanche blocked the township off from aid.  The blizzards were relentless, and food got scarce.  Some folks started to turn up dead and apparently…somewhat consumed by something or someone.  Then more and more. Before long, there wasn’t many folks left.  One was a local pastor that had come to town to save them from “greed and damnation.”  Name of Horace Goodley.  People started to suspect it was Goodley that was killing and eating folks.  Legend has it, the town asked Hezekiah-” Eli laughed a dark laugh and looked at Steve, shaking his head. “–Okay, volunteered?” Eli looked back to the rubble, still shaking his head.  While Eli had been showing his disapproval of this revisionist history, one of the “geologists” walked to the rubble. He then inspected it close enough to touch- which he did despite Eli’s warning- near the mineshaft opening.  Sawyer caught this quick approach, but he was the only one.  By the time Eli turned back to his vigil, the man was a reasonable distance away.  And backing up.

“Anyway,” Steve continued, “Hezekiah acted as bait and got the pastor to chase him up the mountain to this mineshaft they had just opened before the snow started.  We only have Hezekiah’s account, but apparently, there was a struggle, and Goodley was knocked into the open mineshaft.  Then Hezekiah blew it shut with dynamite.  Apparently, they felt guilty about outright killing him, so they decided to lock him in a cave and let him starve to death far enough outside of town they couldn’t hear his screams.”

Furr was shaking his head.  “Human nature.  It’s a funny thing.  Of course, the irony that they killed the cannibal by starvation has a nice poetry to it.  So, how did you happen to get this land where your ancestor proved himself such a hero, Mr. Romer?”

Eli clearly wouldn’t answer, so Steve did. “When Sage City was incorporated, the town charter decreed that as long as an heir of Hezekiah Romer lived and wanted it, this land was theirs for a homestead.  Eli here is the fifth generation to call this land home.  You could say it us his birthright.”

Sawyer noticed that Eli was looking at him, and in a flash of realization, he understood that Eli was the man in the dream he had just had.  There were no snowdrifts, but it was the location, and Eli was the man.

Just then, a single snowflake landed on Ranger Steve’s shoulder.  It was followed by a couple more friends, then a full-on snowfall.

Ranger Steve looked up at the white stuff coming in from the sky. Then he looked at his watch.  “Yep, October 25th, right on time for the first snowfall.  And by the looks of it, it’s going to be a big–”

An explosion from the mineshaft cut Ranger Steve off.  In slow motion, Sawyer saw everyone around him seem to lift off the ground and fly away from the flames and advancing rubble flying through the air. He hit the ground about ten feet from where he was and slid into a pine tree trunk.  As he lost consciousness, he saw the hole where the mineshaft and scratched stones had been.

He thought he saw eyes-green eyes- from inside the dark hole.

Then everything was just dark.

About the Author

The only child of a family that lived on a ranch in the Central Texas Countryside, Chad Lehrmann learned early on to use his imagination to entertain himself.  Creating stories in his head and acting them out eventually led to him entertaining the idea to write stories.  He began this process in his teens, but life got in the way.  After eleven years in ministry, Chad became a public school teacher in College Station, Texas.  Working with teenagers (and raising two of his own), he began to read young adult fiction like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson.  Combined with his love of the works of Stephen King, Chad began to recall those stories and ideas from his youth, but with a new perspective.  Tired of explaining to his students that if he was not a teacher, he would be a writer, but doing nothing to validate that- he penned his first novel, The Sawyer Shepherd Chronicles:  Rites of Passage.  It would be the culmination of characters and story beats that had been germinating in his head for over twenty years.  He hopes you will join him on this journey!
Chad still teaches at College Station High School, where he is currently the Psychology, Sociology, and Debate teacher.  He is married and has two teenage daughters and as a family they love vacationing in the mountains (which are a strong inspiration for the stories he writes).  He also has hobbies of woodworking and collecting action figures.

Chapter 1

Opened Hydrants

This would be a summer for the ages; our youthful existence was celebrated like never before! Fanciful cinemas were brimming with wicked storm troopers and adorable droids who took us on a whimsical journey to galaxies far, far away, and although the King was laid to rest, music still reigned supreme. A ghostly executioner took his maniacal orders from the neighbor’s canine, while three beauties, along with a guy named Charlie, were fighting crime right in our very own living rooms. A computer named after a common fruit was coming home with us, while we were glued to our sets for an entire week over something called a miniseries that rightly opened our eyes. The lights did go out on Broadway, and yes, Virginia, the Yankees did conquer the universe again. It was a wondrous time, like none other. Mine was a turbulent adventure with such highs and lows as few lives have ever experienced. It was also an enduring conflict between what some claimed was an act of indomitable courage, yet others witnessed a profound doubt.

But, let me not get ahead of myself. This spectacle took place in the scintillating county of Kings during the tumultuous summer of 1977. During those sizzling months, I experienced triumphs, agony, fear, and a mythic love affair that had no end. This is also the story of the first time I died, and it went something like this…

My name is Anthony Marino, but everyone in my neighborhood called me

“Ant.” I’m sixteen years old, born, and bred in the rough and tumble neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. For those of you who are not familiar with my hometown, my friends and I call it Guineasville ( only we Italians can call each other a guinea and get away with it). In other words, in this neighborhood of ours, it’s not whether you’re Italian; it’s merely from what part of the boot your family hails?

I am the second faithful son of Saverio and Rosalina, prideful people who emigrated from Taormina, Sicily. My parents met as young teenagers, married and traveled to America ( sounds like a movie, doesn’t it? ). My mother was the dutiful housewife. A fanatical homemaker who would be mortified if you ever caught her without the beds being made, the furniture dusted, and fresh vacuum marks on all the carpets. There was always a pot of sauce gently simmering on the stove, its bouquet greeting you as you entered the front door — and a maganette ( espresso pot) steaming away, its mocha-like aroma declaring the humble brilliance of our home.

Everyone in my neighborhood knew my father; he was the finest example of a dying breed of ancient artisans, known around these parts as stonemasons. He was short, stout, yet a giant in stature. His complexion was dark enough that many mistook him for an Arab. My father was always working; he didn’t understand the word should; I think it might have made him a happier person.

My older brother Sal worked with my father, but he disliked it. What I really meant was that he hated it. Well, maybe that’s a little strong. Instead, working with the old man revealed everything Sal loathed about himself yet lacked the courage to face. You see, my brother Sal was the kind of person who, when asked, took five minutes to decide whether or not he wanted pepperoni on his pizza. Just the other night, he told me a secret I realized would devastate my father. I lay in bed and struggled with it. I wish he didn’t tell me, but I understood this would change Sal and the family forever.

Excerpt

‘Excuse me, excuse me.’ I push my way through the crowd of groupies cluttering the courtyard by the backstage door. There’s some jostling as they hesitate, reluctant to give up the precious spots where they’ve been waiting for who knows how long.

They turn to look at me, at first with disdain – and then, upon seeing what I’m carrying, disdain grudgingly turns to understanding and envy.

Fuck, this is awkward.

I start to feel nauseated. I can’t believe I am doing this. Maybe I should turn back.

Who the fuck do I think I am? I don’t belong here.

Every cell in my body wants to run, but I resist the urge to turn around and instead continue to put one foot in front of the other, slowly moving through the group towards the front.

Come on, Natalie. Breathe. Use your tools.

I’m having a mental block, and it takes me a moment to run through my usual coping tactics.

Okay, an affirmation.

Ikeep moving forward.

I’ve got this. I’ve got this. I’ve got this.

Nausea still rises. But I keep breathing. Then it dawns on me: now would be a great time to test my new theory about affirmations.

Okay. I’ve fucking got this. I’ve fucking got this. I’ve fucking got this.

Focusing on the power the extra word gives the affirmation, the stormy ocean that is my belly calms, and my energy and confidence surge. I soon reach the front few rows of fans; now I can see the security dude guarding the door. He’s massive and looks like he crushes butterflies for fun.

Shit. Perhaps I should go back? What the fuck am I doing?

But I can only imagine what the groupies’ faces will look like if I turn around. I’m such a people pleaser that the mere thought of their faces, unimpressed by my failure, drives me on.

No. I’ve fucking got this. I’ve fucking got this. I’ve fucking got this.

I push through the last of them. The ones at the front are the hardcore fans; they’ve probably been here since early this morning. I expect them to resist. But they part for me, as if out of respect that I’ve made it this far.

Butterfly crusher sees me and raises an eyebrow.

Okay, game on. Come on. I can fucking do this.

‘Hi,’ I say. ‘Um, I’m here for Justin Timberlake.’ The lie feels clunky in my mouth.

Butterfly crusher says nothing, and so I turn my body slightly so he can see what I’m carrying.

‘Oh, right.’ He looks relieved. He’s probably dealt with a few too many obsessed groupies in his time. ‘For massage. Sure, come on in.’

A rush of endorphins flood my body as I realise that’s the first gatekeeper down.

Hell yes, I’ve fucking got this.

He pushes open the doors, and after manoeuvring myself and my table through them, I find myself at the end of a very long corridor with multiple doors. I recognise the familiar warren of backstage.

Ah, shite, where to now?

I turn back to the closing doors. Seeing my questioning face, Butterfly Crusher catches a door and holds it open. ‘It’s Joey you’ll be wanting, the tour manager. He’s at the end on the left, name on his door.’

‘Thank you!’ I smile in relief.

Yep, I’ve fucking got this.

Iwalk with confidence into the depths of backstage.

I can hear what’s possibly a sound check going on in the belly of the building. There’s a buzz of pre-show adrenaline in the air. People dressed predominantly in black jeans with oversized black tees and sporting hair overdue for a haircut nod at me and say hello in voices out of an American sitcom. I smile and return the greeting, feeling a bit like I am in an American sitcom myself.

The last door on the left has an askew laminated sign attached to it reading ‘Joey’. I try not to look too closely at the naked cartoon man that someone has drawn in the corner.

The door is ajar, but I knock anyway.

‘Yep, come in!’ the sitcom voice calls from within. I push open the door to find a man sitting behind a makeshift desk, wearing – surprise! – a black t-shirt and in need of a haircut.

‘Hey, Joey,’ I say, ‘I’m checking in to see if anyone’s needing massage tonight.’

Please don’t let this be all in vain.

‘Oh yeah, cool, sure.’ Joey gets to his feet. ‘Let me find you a space to set up in. That would be great.’

Boom, second gatekeeper down! Hell yeah, I’ve fucking got this.

Joey finds me a small room that’s not in use and I set up, putting out some of my own laminated signs to direct people to me.

Iwish I could tell you that I did in fact get my hands on Justin Timberlake that night, but it was mainly crew and his band. Big American roadies who asked for deep pressure and then took it back when they felt my strength, making jokes about how they hadn’t realised they’d be beaten up by a woman today. And small, toned dancers, their overworked bodies hungry for a therapeutic touch.

Ileft that evening with my pockets full of cash and, more importantly, my confidence flying. Not only had I done something completely out of my comfort zone – I had nailed it.

Back when I lived in London, I massaged musicians backstage and celebrities in their penthouses weekly, through the company I was contracted to. Here in Australia, I didn’t have the backing of the company, and I missed the work and the money. When I heard Justin Timberlake was playing Brisbane, I wondered who of my colleagues might have been assigned to him in London. Then I thought why not me, here, in Australia? Could I just turn up and wing it?

This thought reflected the shift which had been happening within me recently. Since becoming a mother, I’d found my fierce. The lioness within me had awakened: the mama bear, the protector.

This fierceness was echoed in my journaling, my thoughts, in the workings of my inner world, and now it was manifesting in my outer world. I was doing things I hadn’t thought myself capable of.

And I started colouring all parts of my life with this shift. This mama was claiming her space in the world. This mama was making shit happen.

Specifically, my affirmations. I had started dropping an F-bomb into my affirmations.

And fuck, did it work! My affirmations felt stronger, fiercer, more reachable. It was like giving them a turbo boost.

They felt awesome.

But let’s back-track for a moment. Let’s go back to when I first found and fell in love with affirmations. Let’s go back to that decade when Paula Abdul was playing on every ghetto blaster, and no top was complete without shoulder pads.

Let’s go back to the late ’80s:

About the Author
Jeff Pollak grew up in Riverdale – not the one in the Archie comics and movies, the one in the Bronx. After graduating college in Buffalo’s often frozen tundra, he moved to Los Angeles to thaw out and learn to play golf without losing the ball in snow drifts. While there, a law school accepted him into their night program. Now retired from life as a civil trial litigator, Jeff lives in the Crescenta Valley where the closest Jeff comes to winter is his sporadic attendance at hockey games.
FIRST SECOND COMING, Jeff’s debut novel, was inspired by 9/11. Like everyone else, Jeff was transfixed by the unfolding tragedy. Unlike everyone else, Jeff had clients in the World Trade Center, his law firm had given annual seminars at Windows of the World, at the top of the building, and he’d become familiar with some of the staff. While watching the WTC collapse, the thought “earth needs a new God who’s a planetary turnaround specialist,” came to mind. Over the ensuing decade, this odd idea germinated in the deeper recessions of Jeff’s overactive brain until this story hatched in 2015. Jeff’s been writing it ever since.
