Prologue

AUGUST 1979

HE BURIED HIS ring.

My mother had died two years earlier, when I was just a toddler, and her ring went with her—into the casket, into the ground. My dad had kept his ring on, worn it through those aching, unsteady months of early grief. But now he was getting married again. And we were at my mother’s gravesite. And he was burying his ring.

He slid it from his knuckle up to his fingertip and used it as a tool to dig a small hole in the ground before dropping the ring near my mother’s headstone in the rolling hills of the San Fernando Valley. Then he covered the ring with soil, patting the mound tenderly. I remember thinking that I should probably miss my mom more than I did, but I was only two when she died, so how could I? And I loved my dad with such intensity—and felt just as intensely loved back—that there wasn’t much room for sadness in my heart that day.

There was a softness to my mom that I’ll never forget. A tall, quiet, weepy gentleness. If I closed my eyes tight, I could conjure a rippling image of a swimming pool, her arms around me as we floated. Tighter, and I saw a small kitchen. Broken dishes and blood everywhere.

I remember much less about my mother than I do about the diner we went to after my dad buried his ring. It was here, over a plate of pancakes and bacon, that I first heard the numbers 6-6-6.

“Something’s gonna happen,” my dad said, “but I hope not in your lifetime.”

He set his cup of coffee on the Formica tabletop and held my gaze. I knew he had something important to tell me. He said something about revelations, something I didn’t really understand, and that our mom had known the world was ending. Now he knew it, too. Computers, microchipping, salvation.

“People are going to be buying and selling things with computers, but only if they have the mark of the beast. And I will not ever take the mark of the beast. If I have to live on the side of the road, I will. And I won’t let it happen to you.”

I was only four. A beast, to me, was something under the bed. Something inside the closet. Something dangerous and snarling that could take my father away from me. Something terrible that might have taken my mother.

That night, I started praying fervently. And I never stopped.

Don’t let my daddy die. Don’t let the world end.

Please don’t let him take my daddy too.

EXCERPT

I think the body gives the mind the ammunition for the mind to give back to the body the force. And today, for the first time, that ammunition is absent. There is nothing left in the arsenal. All the weapons have been exhausted. It is not that I have given up but more accurately that I am no longer allowed to participate. There is a difference, a big difference, but probably one that can be truly understood only by my fellow dying patients. And they are not going to be around much longer to testify.

Knowing that changes everything. A certain tranquility now lies before me, which is somewhat comforting in a strange and paradoxical way. I have lost some fights before, but this time there will be no second chance. No opportunity to amend the results. No strategy to overcome the obstacle in some ingenious or herculean way. No rematch. I don’t have to perform any more and be held accountable to my increasingly unattainable standards. The pressure is off. My fate is sealed. The ultimate defeat lies before me, and I feel both anxious and curious about what lies ahead.

I am searching for a way not to feel that I’ve been beaten, to view my earthly demise in more spiritual terms. Certainly, it can’t be worse than my existence now, and I pray it will be a whole lot better. But although I feel somewhat prepared, I am still uncertain about the timing. Will it happen this very minute, or in an hour, or even in a day?

I am not fearful any longer, but I don’t want panic to creep back in at the moment of truth. I want to relax and go out with some semblance of dignity and pride. Will I have any control at the very, very end or just become a prisoner to my relentless captor? To what degree can I define any portion of my journey? I would like to simply ease into my death and be carried away in its decisive beauty. I hope I’m not completely alone when it occurs, for that would be both daunting and dispiriting. Death can make a person feel so uncomfortably vulnerable.

There can be no more isolating feeling in the world than dying.

Putting Jewish Characters on Stage

Drama

Date Published: February 1, 2024

Showing diversity is the best way to undermine the negative stereotyping of
Jewish people. The five plays in this book illustrate why stereotypes of any
description don’t work.

In Shylock Revisited, the main character won’t give up his efforts to make
the merchant of Venice, Antonio, pay what he owes. In “Good Deeds”
a screen writer, Salka Viertel, pays the price for helping Nazi era Jewish
artists escape from Europe.

Harry Houdini takes on a reluctant con woman in Margery Meets Harry.
Educating Henry Adams has the queen of Tahiti convince the U.S. historian,
Henry Adams, to help her write a family history that leaves out her Jewish
heritage. And finally, in The Optimist, a Jewish college professor discovers
that the world goes beyond the logical solutions he thinks will solve all
problems.
