BLURB:

As the only doctor on Aveyn, Ava works day and night for the people she considers hers. Only… she’s not really one of them, is she? She’s a hybrid, a highly illegal creature created by Trade Minister Knut for his personal enjoyment. And she risks a fate worse than death if her existence is ever discovered by Prime Councilor Aav, the most powerful Matriarch in the Ring.

When a tall, arrogant, sapphire blue alien comes to Aveyn, it’s not long before headstrong Ava gets in trouble with him – the new Eok warrior in charge.
Arlen wants nothing to do with his new assignment on Aveyn. All he wants is to return to the violence at the Frontier and drown his broken heart in bloodshed. But he made a deal with his brother, the Commander-in Chief-of the Eok armies: a year of peace for a year of combat. So, Arlen comes to Aveyn fully intent on ruling all those who live there with an iron fist…

… all except a troublesome, gorgeous female whose purple eyes haunt his dreams. When the Mating Venom pushes him to the edge of madness, can Arlen learn to trust in his heart again, or is his soul lost to the bloodlust?

EXCERPT:

She closed her eyes.

The scents became clearer as she kept her eyes closed. The water, pure and cold; the grass under her naked soles; and the flowers. The flowers, with their stubborn, extravagant love for life. How many times had she wished she was like one of those flowers? Blooming, happy, beautiful. Hundreds of times, thousands, she’d wished it. Every time Knut made her cry, every time Knut made her feel like she wasn’t truly a person.

“You shouldn’t come out here alone, especially at night.”

A male voice startled her and Ava turned quickly, holding the scalpel she had brought with her in front of her body defensively. A tall, broad figure stepped out of the deep shadows created by a series of bushes, a figure she recognized instantly.

“I could tell you the same thing.” Ava lowered her arm but didn’t withdraw it completely.

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were following me.”

“I am following you.” There it was again, that humorless voice, all business and military.

It made her body tingle in all the wrong places, even though alarms bells rang in her head.

Ava watched warily as Arlen approached, completely undeterred by her weapon.

“How very stalkerish of you.”

He didn’t answer, just prowled closer to her with an uncanny, almost feline grace. The silver moonlight reflected off his head, making the markings on his skin even more apparent. A tiny thrill skittered across her skin at the sight of him and she pulled the sides of her cotton sweater more tightly around her body.

He was close enough now that she could see his features clearly, the harsh shadows from the cloudless moon playing on the angles of his face, giving him the appearance of an ancient,

long-forgotten deity. His pale eyes reflected the light, seeming almost entirely white as he stared down at her.

There was nothing soft about him. Not even the plump hardness of his lips as his mouth stretched into a humorless grin.

“Are you always this insolent?”

Arlen hovered above her, barely two feet away, and he was so tall she had to tilt her head back to meet his gaze. His arms were bare in his sleeveless vest, rippling with muscles and covered with markings. He was a monument to strength and control, to this cold military authority she sensed in everything he did.

The tingling in her belly grew as she stared at those strong arms, that skin covered with markings that seemed as rough as it was soft. What would it feel to run her fingers along it? Her tongue?

Get a grip! What is going on with you?

“Maybe it’s just your Eok charm.” Ava forced herself to relax her posture but her arms refused to let go, and she still hugged herself. “Are you always this creepy?”

He shook his head at her sassy answer then his eyes went down to her scalpel. The corner of his mouth curved up slightly, and there was something in his gaze that wasn’t there before as he looked back up at her. It looked an awful lot like amusement.

“Do you plan on stabbing me? If so, I hope your arms are stronger than they look. It’ll take you all night to kill me with that.”

“Of course not.” Ava brought her arm down, suddenly feeling very foolish. What was she expecting, anyway? It wasn’t like she could fight off an Eok warrior with her scalpel. “I brought it with me for protection, that’s all.” She turned to the river, but she could feel Arlen’s gaze on her. “Nobody comes here, anyway.”

“Nobody but you.” He planted himself at her side and they stayed like that in silence for a while. When he finally spoke again, his voice wasn’t all business and efficiency, but a bit dreamy. “Did you come here often? Before?”

Ava’s arms tightened around her body and a sudden surge of emotions welled up in her throat. Aside from Uril, nobody asked her questions. Nobody cared what she felt. Why did he?

Or maybe she was just a fool to think he did.

EXCERPT:

He kissed her like nothing else mattered. Like she was the beginning and the end and everything in between. She could lose herself in that kiss, in those arms that could protect her from everything.
There was a vulnerability about Arlen as he kissed her while she sat on his lap, her head just above his own, her hands on his face. Like he was surrendering himself to his lust for her entirely.
And that made her even more his.
Ava moved, straddling Arlen in the chair. Her sex met a familiar hardness as she pressed against his erection, desire instantly spreading through her.
Their kiss deepened as Arlen’s hands explored her body, running from the small of her back to her breasts, hot and hard, pressing against her flesh as he took control of their encounter.
She could feel the wetness spreading between her legs, delicious and feminine. Demanding possession like a scream.
Wordlessly, he pulled her sweater over her head and discarded it to the floor, his gaze fixed on her naked skin with blatant hunger. Ava reached down to wrap her fingers around his sex, but he stopped her.
“No,” Arlen ordered. “I want to savor you. I want to remember this moment.”
There was a need in his voice, a demand that was as deep as the wounds of his past. She surrendered, allowing him to take control of her body, to hold her like he owned every inch of her. And he did. More than that, she wanted him to.
Arlen grabbed the back of her neck, tilting her head back, bracing her weight in his arms. She leaned into his hold as his mouth ran over her throat, his tongue lapping at her heartbeat. His fangs raked her skin, spreading erotic arousal all the way to her core.
She wanted his male flesh inside her. She tried to move but he held her still, her body hanging halfway in the air, completely under his control.

EXCERPT:

His other hand closed around her waist and Arlen pulled her in, crushing her against his hard, male body. Her fingers clenched around the weapon she still held in her free hand, and in a flash of pure instinct, Ava raised the scalpel, the blade coming to rest just under his chin. Eyes as pale as the moonlight stared at her without a single trace of fear as the blade moved in tandem with his pulse.

“Let me go.” Her voice wasn’t trembling anymore.

“Or what, Ava?” Arlen pushed his head forward and down and the blade broke his skin, a trickle of blood dripping down his neck and into the open collar of his vest. “You will kill me? Slit my throat in cold blood?”

Ava let out a shaky breath, her hand pulling slightly away from his jugular. Still, his face lowered, his eyes set on her like a predator, ignoring her threat.

His lips landed on hers above the blade; imperious and hard. He kissed her like it was a command, demanding absolute submission.

And she responded. Her body weakened, her fingers opening and the scalpel falling to the grass at her feet. Her lips parted under his and his tongue entered her mouth. His taste was male and clean, and he took possession of her mouth completely as her mind went blank. Her knees buckled, but his hold on her was firm and he held her there against him.

She could barely breathe as his fingers dug into her flesh, descending to grab her ass. He pulled her against him as a hardness all too male dug into her stomach.

Fear mixed with her arousal, then the hand that had held the blade went to his chest and she pushed against him.

Arlen growled into her mouth, refusing to heed her plea to stop. As his hand went down to cup an entire ass cheek, she whimpered in fright against his flesh.

The sound of her fear was like a shock and, as suddenly as he had begun, he stopped. A second later, the Eok warrior stood five feet away from her.

The moon shone a pale light on his features, and his eyes seemed to glow as if lit from within. His gaze trailed over her body and she was aware of her breasts pushing against the thin fabric, the plunging shape of her neckline, revealing way too much skin. His chest heaved as he stood there, his expression one of pure shock.

Then he turned his back on her and left, disappearing into the night.

EXCERPT

“I won’t let anything happen to any of you.” Kamal’s eyes glittered and his grin faded. “That I vow to you.”

His face lost all humor and she was pinned by the intensity of his stare. Her eyes wandered over his exotic, hard features, and she was once again entranced by the pattern of tiny bumps on his skin.

Hesitantly, like she was afraid he wouldn’t allow it, she reached for his cheek. His skin was hot under her fingertips but also smooth, the texture thicker than a human’s, but warm and pleasant. Her fingertips slid along his jaw with its myriad of tiny bumps, their formation so close and forming swirls so intricate, it was almost like a tattoo.

Kamal’s eyes gleamed and his body was unmoving. He was watching her in silence, allowing her to touch and explore.

“What are those?” Aliena asked.

“An Eok earns his warrior status by marking his body. I only stopped to spare my father’s record.”

Understanding came, fast and shocking. Those patterns, intricate and wonderful, were created by blood and blade, through an amount of pain she could not even comprehend. She pulled her hand away but Kamal caught her wrist.

“Such fragility.” He examined her hand under the moonlight. “Such beauty.”

“Let me go.”

Aliena pulled but her hand was a prisoner. Kamal’s eyes locked with hers, and he tugged her closer, forcing her hand to flatten against his cheek again.

“An Eok warrior learns to master pain.” He turned his head slightly and a kiss landed just at the base of her wrist, creating an electric current of arousal down her entire body. “One has to master pain if one wants to conquer pleasure, wouldn’t you agree?”

“I wouldn’t know,” she forced herself to answer, even though her throat was closed and her heart beat like a crazed animal between her ribs. “Pain isn’t one of my pastimes.”

Kamal’s lips stretched in a predatory grin, exposing his fangs, and a hand closed on the small of her back, pulling her closer into his male heat. His breath caressed her lips, his eyes imprisoning her like a blanket of lead.

His mouth closed on hers with purpose. It laid waste to everything she thought she knew, to everything she ever thought she wanted. This kiss was a claim, a brand on her very soul.

Kamal took possession of her mouth, his tongue sliding in and out, rubbing over hers, filling it with his taste, his scent. Her tongue answered, responding automatically. She slid it over the sharp tips of his fangs and a tangy taste tickled her taste buds. A rush of adrenaline and heat spread inside her body and she moaned into his mouth.

Kamal’s hands slid to her ass and he pressed her against his erection, hard and large under his pants. One hand slid to her front, cupping her small breast through the heavy layer of clothing. Unable to resist the sudden surge of lust, Aliena’s hand ran down Kamal’s perfectly muscled chest, then lower, along the flat of his stomach.

She held his erection, squeezing lightly.

Kamal broke the kiss, and locked gazes with her.

“You’re playing with fire, Little Bird. Be careful you don’t push the games too far.”

“Afraid of me, are you, Blue Boy?” Aliena smirked, then passed the tip of her tongue over her lips.

Kamal watched, his eyes following every movement. The hand on her ass pressed her closer and his eyes turned savage and dangerous.

Excitement and fear battled in equal measure in Aliena’s body but her mind was too far gone to heed it. Heat was rushing through her body, making her crave his touch, his possession, like no other before.

The hand on her breast slid up and gripped her hair, pulling gently until her throat was exposed. She was utterly powerless in his arms, and instead of cooling her lust, it only made the burning ache between her legs stronger. Her core squeezed and clenched, demanding a male.

Kamal’s jaw closed on her throat and Aliena squealed. The tips of his fangs scraped her skin and heat rose from the contact, washing away her sanity, making her melt with desire for him. His tongue lapped at her throat, to the place where her jugular beat a frenzied pace.

Then and there, she knew. If Kamal wanted her, she would give in readily.
