School’s out for the summer and math teacher Katie Wilk needs
something to occupy her time, something beyond helping to plan Jane
Mackey’s upcoming wedding. So, when Jane suggests golf lessons and Katie
secures a part-time job at the Shady Oaks Country Club to cover the cost of
her golfing gear, it seems like a win-win plan. Unfortunately, the
club’s irascible golf pro seems to make enemies wherever he goes, so
when his body turns up near the 14th hole, it’s anyone’s guess who
might have done him in.

Katie doesn’t really want another murder to investigate, but Officer
Ronnie Christianson is back to his old ways, and it looks like he’ll do
what it takes to implicate her in the death. And Katie just happens to have
seen a potentially incriminating clue, behind a secret garden wall that few
know about. Can Katie, Jane, and Ida ask enough questions to find out what
really happened before the police come after her?

Excerpt

“I can’t imagine you didn’t inherit my ability to sit still
and do absolutely nothing. I’m the king of procrastination.”

I laughed. “This from a man who plans every minute of his day.”

“Yes, but I make certain I plan all my sitting-still time first. I might
have some ideas for you.”

Poised to take note of Dad’s constructive contributions, I said,
“Do tell.”

He leaned back in the chair and crossed his arms. “You could pick up a
new hobby.”

“I could teach you to cook. Maybe. Or you could bike.”

I plopped my elbow on the table and supported my cheek in my hand. “You
and Ida have tried to teach me to cook. It’s been practically
impossible, and there’s only so much biking I can do.” I shook my
head yet listened for something novel.

“You could sleep in.”

“Tried that.” I side-eyed my pup and exhaled.

“You could learn a craft like … crocheting or knitting.”

Two more words made the list. He waited for an enthusiastic response, which
didn’t happen, but nuggets of ideas turned over in my head as I chewed
my final morsel of bacon. Our landlady, Ida Clemashevski, was a creative whiz
not only at cooking, but with her passions of art, acting, music, and probably
crafting as well.

“There’s always fishing,” he said, cautiously optimistic.
“Or get a part-time job?”

I jotted a few words next to his recommendations and drew a fish.

Dad asked, “What’s that?”

Having confirmed my lack of any artistic talent, my sketch disappeared under
scribbles. “I’ll think about taking up a hobby, but meanwhile, it
seems I’ll simply have to resign myself to mundane chores
…” I hopped up. “Nothing exciting. Something like doing the
dishes.” I juggled the serving platters, plates, and silverware and
deposited them in the sink, leaving the delicate cups for a second trip.

Soap foamed under the cascade of hot water, and I scrubbed slowly to eat up at
least a portion of my free time. Although Dad reached for a towel, I shooed
him out of the kitchen, knowing how much he valued his predictable weekday
schedule: a hearty first meal of the day, a one-mile walk around the
neighborhood—rain or shine, an in-depth read of the newspaper from cover
to cartoons, an exercise class at the Y, and his volunteer stint at the
library.

“No doubt, by week’s end you’ll have discovered a new and
more streamlined method for doing dishes. You know I love you.” He
kissed my forehead and headed for the door and a day of sunshine. “But
we’ve got to keep you occupied and out of trouble, or you’ll never
get rid of the crazy nickname you earned.”

I called to his retreating back, “Just because I’ve been in the
wrong places and involved in the resolution of several serious crimes, I
really don’t think I deserve the moniker ‘Katie Wilk, the murder
magnet.’”

About the Author

Mary Seifert
Mary Seifert is the mastermind behind the captivating Katie and Maverick
Cozy Mysteries, a 2024 International IMPACT Award winner for books in a
series. If you love a thrilling whodunit with a sprinkle of humor and a dash
of charm, her books are for you. Her novel Maverick, Movies & Murder was a
finalist for the 2023 American Fiction Award, and Santa, Snowflakes &
Strychnine earned a spot as a 2024 Chanticleer Murder and Mayhem finalist. Set
in the picturesque landscapes of West Central Minnesota, where the lakes
begin, Mary’s stories are as cozy as a warm cup of cocoa on a chilly
day.

Mary’s love affair with books began in her grandfather’s secretive
basement backroom library, where she read childhood favorites, Heidi, Black
Beauty, National Velvet, Charlotte’s Web, Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory, and devoured works by literary greats such as Agatha Christie, Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle, Erle Stanley Gardner, Wouk, Chandler, du Maurier, Ellery
Queen, Margaret Mitchell, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Salinger, Bradbury, Tolkien,
and Pasternak, to name just a few. These early literary adventures, combined
with lively book discussions with her mother and siblings helped shape her
love for mysteries and complex narratives. Her father’s gift of
outrageous storytelling added exaggeration to her arsenal, lending a playful
twist to her writing.

Mary grounded her passion for storytelling when she shared her love of reading
with her children, solving puzzles alongside beloved characters like Nancy
Drew, the Boxcar Children, and the Hardy Boys, and that passion is growing,
watching the next generation learn to read. She proudly believes her kids,
their significant others, and her grandchildren are the smartest in the
universe, and she’s not shy about letting the world know it!

A National Competition and a Deadly Detour

High school teacher Katie Wilk is thrilled when her students qualify for Mock
Trial America, a prestigious courtroom competition in Atlanta. Alongside her
best friend and fellow teacher Jane Mackey, a team of eager teens, and a crew
of devoted chaperones, Katie boards a flight from Minnesota—ready for a
week of intellectual showdowns and Southern hospitality. But things go
sideways before the plane is even off the ground.

With canceled flights, endless delays, and one particularly obnoxious
passenger stirring up trouble, the trip turns into a logistical, almost
deadly, nightmare. When that same rude traveler turns up later in Atlanta, the
chaos takes a deadly turn—and suspicion lands squarely on the Mackey
family.

As Katie digs deeper, she uncovers a web of secrets: stolen documents,
corporate espionage, dangerous toxins, and enough motive to make her question
everything. Can she untangle the truth before the killer strikes again?

Luckily, she’s got help—from Maverick, her sharp-nosed, loyal
Labrador retriever and trained search-and-rescue dog, who’s always ready
to sniff out danger.

Smart, suspenseful, and full of heart, this latest installment in Mary
Seifert’s charming cozy mystery series delivers Southern intrigue,
tricky puzzles, and the kind of dogged determination only a Lab (and a
resolute teacher) can provide.

EXCERPT

In reality, rushing water poured into the pond next to us, and plumes pounded the base of the falls, feeding the swiftly moving water in front of us. It burbled over substantial boulders and rocks and looked no less intimidating than any other spot.

Wendell removed his shoes, stuffed his socks inside, tied the laces, and hung them around his neck. He rolled up his pants legs and nodded. “You might want to do the same.”

The last remnants of the rainwater had evaporated from my clothes, and I couldn’t imagine getting wet all over again. I reluctantly removed my shoes and socks, crusty with dried mud, leaves, and burrs.

Wendell pocketed the gun, descended to the water’s edge, and stepped from the shore to the nearest flat stone, teetered, then caught his balance. He took another step. And another. The words he called over his shoulder were almost lost in the cacophony surrounding us. “It’s fine.”

I had few options. I tied the laces of my shoes together in front of me around the straps of my backpack to help keep it secure and took a deep breath. The staff acted like a third leg, and the first steps were easy, but the chilly splashes caused me to shiver, and midway across, I slid on a stone, slimy with lichen, dropped the stick, and pitched into the unexpectedly deep torrent of water.

My body slammed into the ice-cold river, forcing the air from my lungs. I couldn’t get my footing and fought to take a breath as the strong current carried me along and quickly swept me downstream, away from Wendell. I bounced against hard, stationary items submerged below the surface, pummeled from side to side, and could almost hear dinging as if hitting the bumpers on a pinball machine. The turbulence in the water increased, rippling and foamy. The surge dragged me under. I came up sputtering and inhaled a mouthful of water before the world around me spun out of control.

I couldn’t catch my breath. From deep in my subconscious came words I learned from CJ Bluestone, Carlee’s dad and Maverick’s search-and-rescue trainer. “Stay calm, no matter what the problem.” I had a problem—a big problem.

My heavy pack continued to pull me under. No matter how much I wriggled and writhed, I couldn’t shrug it loose. I thrashed and my shoes thumped my chest. Then I remembered the ties, but my numb fingers didn’t have the dexterity to undo the knots. The river quickly turned to rapids, more froth, faster moving, more stones, and an increase in the roar of spilling water. Whatever waited for me wouldn’t be gentle, and my efforts to steer toward shore made no headway. I watched a huge log a few hundred yards in front of me rise up and plummet out of sight. Kicking and flailing had little impact on my trajectory. My strength declined. My head filled with a million thoughts, some welcome memories and some regrets, when I realized, I wasn’t going to make it.

Excerpt

Weather delayed the incoming plane. We had boarded thirty minutes behind
schedule, and forty-two minutes later, after anxious bouts of fits and giggles
checking watches and phone screens, we saw our pilot step out of the cockpit
to make a brief announcement.

“Good morning, folks. Sorry for the delay, but due to mechanical issues,
we’ve had to cancel our non-stop flight to Atlanta.” As the air
around me took on a rumble, he smiled uneasily and took a big breath.
“We apologize for any inconvenience, and we’ll do our best to
accommodate you and get you to your final destination as quickly as possible.
Please gather your belongings and check the seat pocket before disembarking.
See the gate attendant for more details.”

We exited the aircraft. Our students crowded around me, and I said decisively,
“We’ll catch another plane soon and still arrive in plenty of time
to take advantage of everything we’ve planned before your competition
begins in three days. Don’t worry.”

Famous last words. I hoped I wasn’t constructing a false narrative for
our future.

I massaged my temples as we waited our turn and inched our way to the desk for
information. The smile glued to the young man’s face never wavered as he
checked our tickets. “It’s a very busy Memorial weekend.”
His fingers flew over the keys. “It’ll take a bit of maneuvering
to get your entire group in the sky, but we’ll get you on the next
available flight, however …” He looked up at me, and one corner of his
mouth turned down in a bit of alarm. “The operative word is
available.

My heart leaped to my throat, and I gritted my teeth in frustration.

“And a nonstop will be impossible.” His eyebrows, cheeks, and lips
morphed into one big apology. “You’ll be rerouted first through
Detroit.”
