For lovers Malik and Dorian, the death of one of House Severn’s
leaders just turned personal.

House Severn is in turmoil with the mysterious death of its leader’s
omega mate. No one knows how he died, and it falls on Malik Devries, the
House’s resident Spiritori priest, to find answers.

Dorian Morrow was only fifteen when his family fled House Severn. He always
thought his dads wanted to get away and live life free of any House ties.
He’d been wrong — so very, very wrong.

EXCERPT

Wails echoed down the hall, anguished and utterly heartbreaking.

I leaned against the wall halfway down and closed my eyes. This whole
nightmare had come out of nowhere, and no one had answers. Not even me.

A few days ago, Cesar, our leader’s mate, had been healthy, laughing and
smiling with the rest of us. Then everything changed almost overnight. Darrien
had rushed to my chambers and begged me to come with him, which I had. Cesar
had been so pale, I’d feared he was already gone. He hung onto life for
another couple of days before succumbing to whatever ailed him.

As I listened to one of my best friends mourn his partner’s death, I
couldn’t help but curse the gods themselves. Darrien and Cesar ruled
House Severn with kindness, and to hear such gut-wrenching sorrow was surreal
in this place.

A door farther down opened, and I looked toward it. Darrien’s advisor,
Christian Morelock, stepped into the hall. He headed my way, his expression as
torn as I figured mine to be. He sighed and leaned against the wall opposite
me, hands shoved into his pockets. He closed his eyes, and neither of us said
a word for a moment while we listened to Darrien’s cries.

“Send any petitioners or issues to me for the time being.”

“Understood.”

“Don’t suppose you have any clue what happened, do you?”

I wished I could’ve said I had all the answers, but I had none.
“No. Doc is just as stumped. Once Cesar is delivered to the chapel,
I’ll see what I can divine.”

Christian studied me for a few seconds before replying. “You think
it’s magic, don’t you?”

“I do,” I admitted. “Beyond the fact that we are less
susceptible to illness than humans, my gut tells me this isn’t something
so easily explained away.”

He nodded. “My question is: who is behind it? Who the fuck would target
Cesar? That man never harmed a fly.”

That was the crux of this situation. Darrien and Cesar honestly had no true
enemies. It just didn’t make a damn bit of sense.

“Anyway,” Christian said, dragging my attention back to him,
“I need to go downstairs and call a meeting. Darrien will be out of
commission for a while.”

This was one reason why I avoided relationships. Beyond being a Spiritori and
dealing with the issues it came with, the thought of finding love, only to
possibly lose it, was more than I really wanted to face.

Christian pushed off from the wall and put a hand on my shoulder.
“I’ll make sure Cesar’s body gets to you as soon as
possible.”

“Don’t rush anything,” I said. “Give Darrien time.
I’ll be here.”

Nodding, Christian continued down the hall toward the bank of elevators. He
stepped into one, and the doors slid shut, leaving me alone in the hallway
again.

Darrien had quieted, but I could feel the soul-deep heartbreak with uneasy
clarity. This was personal. We had been friends for centuries. Cesar’s
death hit us all with devastating precision.

Like it had been planned.

That thought took root in my mind, and I couldn’t shake it. I hurried to
the elevators and headed down. My apartment was on the same floor as
Christian’s, but I worked in the basement. I enjoyed the solitude and
quiet more than the usual bustle of the rest of the complex.

As soon as the doors opened, I stepped out, only to find Seth Gates, the head
of security and the fifth member of our close-knit friendship circle, waiting
for me. I nodded in greeting and unlocked the door, gesturing for him to join
me. The moment we were alone, I turned to him.

“You’re thinking the same damn thing.”

“I am,” Seth said. “For several reasons.”

“Talk to me,” I replied as we walked through the entryway and
toward my workspace. I pressed my hand to the sensor on the wall, and the
door’s lock clicked. Confident Seth followed, I headed to my lab,
turning on lights as I went. Once we were alone again, Seth sat on one of the
nearby stools while I booted up my computer.

“I don’t think Cesar was the actual target.”

One eyebrow raised, I glanced over at him. “Okay…”

Seth shrugged. “I think we all were.”

I sat down and signed into the network. “Explain?”

“He was the only omega in Darrien’s inner circle. At least the
only one anyone knew about,” he added. “He’d be the ideal
target for magic, too, since he was a laicas.”

“True.” I turned to him. “Do you recall a trouble-making
asshole named Jules Morrow?”

Seth scowled. “Bastard was a fucking pain in my ass. Why?”

“He and his laicas mate, Roman, struck out on their own about seven
years ago. Before they left, Jules had been in touch with someone outside
House Severn, asking about delayed magic.”

“How the hell did you find that out, and what the fuck is
‘delayed’ magic?”

“Let’s just say I do have contacts throughout the area,” I
replied. “I can’t elaborate for their safety.”

Seth rolled his eyes. “You know you can trust me, but I get it. Now
what’s ‘delayed’ magic? I thought spells hit when
cast.”

“Most do, but those that are labeled as ‘delayed’ act much
differently. They attach themselves to their targets and only activate when a
certain event occurs or when a certain amount of time has passed. Essentially,
a Magien can cast a spell on someone to activate, say, when that person hits a
particular age or what have you. Follow me?”

“Sort of,” Seth muttered, though his expression said otherwise. He
was a Venari, and, like laicas vamps, they tended to steer very clear of magic
in general.

“Anyway, and this is a very loose hypothesis, what if Jules Morrow did
something along those lines to Cesar? If your idea of all of us being the
actual targets is true, then it would definitely be plausible.”

“I recall Jules being a rather jealous, vindictive shit,” Seth
said. “Wouldn’t surprise me.”

“Jealous being the keyword here,” I pointed out. “Cesar was
an omega in a strong position of power. Jules was an omega with nothing but a
cheating, worthless alpha.”

Seth sighed and raked a hand through his short, spiky black hair. “So
what do we do?”

“I need to see if I can track down one of them.”

“That’s like searching for a needle in a haystack, Malik. How
–”

“They have a son.”

EXCERPT

“There is no way in hell I am going to take over an entire house.”

The words — my words — still rang clear in my head. Two weeks had passed
since that conversation with Raphael Santos. I had been very determined to nix
the idea completely, but a tiny glimmer of “what-if” lingered. I
also couldn’t fathom the work needed to run what was left of House Zalis
now that its founding leader, Ivan Zalis, was dead.

Raph had been right, though. The house needed a magic user to run it. I wanted
to kick myself for even thinking about it.

Swift on the heels of that came the reminder that it wasn’t just me and
the pups now. Although we hadn’t talked about the future during the past
couple of lunch dates we’d had since our unexpected meeting at Saridan
Tower, there was no denying Zach Cane and I were mates. I had known that first
night, when a few hours of insanely hot, quasi-anonymous sex had sealed my
damn fate.

I didn’t know if Zach had any clue what we were. Surely, as an alpha, he
did, but he hadn’t shown any indication that night or any time since. I
certainly hadn’t told him either. I was still struggling with it myself.
I’d spent my entire life torn between hoping for my fated mate and
praying I never found him. I put the blame squarely at my parents’ feet,
too. My alpha father, Stefan, had been a narcissistic asshole who’d used
his magic to cause trouble for just about anyone he met, and my omega
stepfather, Martin, had despised him for it. I’d been hidden away by him
in hopes that my own magic would never be an issue. Hell, Martin had forced me
to live as a laicas, a commoner. When he died, though, all bets were off.
That’s when I began honing my skills as an Incantas. But watching my
folks’ marriage deteriorate, magic or no, soured me on relationships.

Then Zach waltzed into my life.

Barking from inside the house snapped me back to the present. I realized
I’d been sitting in the truck for longer than intended. I got out and
grabbed the bags of dog food. As soon as I stepped into the house, all four
pups swarmed me as if they’d been starving.

“It’s only been an hour, you idiots,” I said with a laugh.

I set the bags down and sat on the floor to get kisses and tail-smacks in the
face. I never really intended to have this many pets. I’d started with
one, then came another. Then I rescued two more. Now I couldn’t imagine
life without my furbabies.

“Okay, okay,” I said as I stood. “Let’s get you
nutcases fed.”

I picked up the bags and headed for the kitchen. The cabin wasn’t huge,
but it suited me perfectly. I spent the majority of my life here after Martin
whisked me away once they split up. Growing up, I hated the isolation, but,
over time, I soon preferred it to the city and being around other people. I
still had an apartment at Saridan Tower, but this was home. Just me and the
pups.

My phone rang as I started filling the four food dishes. I answered it and put
it on speaker.

“Hey.”

“Got a minute?” Deacon Saridan asked.

I glanced over at the phone and inwardly sighed. I had the feeling I knew what
this was about. “Sure.”

“I’ve been in talks with Javier Torneau. We agree that, while the
former House Lorthaen should be dissolved completely, what remains of House
Zalis is simply too important, magic-wise. That said, they need a
leader.”

“Fuck,” I grumbled. I sat down at the dining table and sighed.
“Deacon…”

“I know it isn’t something you really want, but you’re the
most obvious choice,” my half-brother said. “You’re one of
the strongest Incantas in this area.”

“I don’t want to lead.”

“That’s precisely why you’re the best choice,” Deacon
countered. “You’re not the type to let any sort of power go to
your head.”

I grimaced. “That’s what Raph said. Have you two been
talking?”

Deacon chuckled. “Perhaps, but we’re right.”

“You’re also an asshole,” I muttered. “Both of
you.”

“So I’ll see you this afternoon then for a meeting? Say…
two?”

“Ugh. Fine. Jackass.”

Deacon laughed. “See you then.”

We hung up, and I dropped my head to the tabletop, tempted to bang it a few
times for good measure. Yes, I knew they were right. Ivan Zalis had been a
Spiritori, but his death left a lot of good magic users in limbo without a
leader. Magiens, Incantas, even a few Spiritori made up what had once been
House Zalis. That much firepower, so to speak, couldn’t be unchecked and
left to float around without direction and someone to watch them. An Incantas
could also weed out the undesirables from the ones who just wanted to live
without trouble. Much like myself.

When my phone pinged with a text, I half dreaded looking at it. I did, though,
and couldn’t help but smile. Despite the mates issue lingering like an
elephant between us, seeing Zach’s name pop on my screen made me ache
with a hunger I hadn’t felt for anyone before meeting him.

Got any plans this evening?

EXCERPT

Lucas

Everything hurt. Not as bad as when I’d… well… when a
human cop had swooped in, ready to obliterate Gino Boone. Gino had the jump on
him, though, and ate a bullet like a fucking coward. I was happy to be out of
that nightmare, but I wasn’t entirely sure how to feel about being here
now. The head of House Saridan, Deacon, and another vamp had visited me in the
hospital and brought me here to Saridan’s Tower. Outside this apartment,
I still didn’t feel entirely comfortable, but when Raphael was around,
that all changed.

He was my mate. I didn’t need any sort of test to tell me that either.
My gut instinct had made it crystal clear the second the man had walked into
my hospital room with Deacon.

When we’d arrived here at the tower, I’d noticed others gave
Raphael a wide berth. I couldn’t fathom why, though. He’d told me
what he was: a death mage. His magic was the kind that manipulated a
being’s life force. There seemed to be a faint aura of… something
around him everywhere he went. It didn’t scare me, though. He
might’ve terrified others, even other vamps, but not me. In private, he
was attentive, almost to the point of being a mother hen. He was soft-spoken
and gentle, far more than I ever expected someone like him could be.

The wounds from the beating Gino had given me were healing, though I was still
sore. The worst part, though, was not knowing how the rest would play out.
Gino had whored me out to random bastards, and, at some point, I got pregnant.
Raphael knew, but unlike most alphas, he didn’t seem upset about it.

As I sat on the bed, I put a hand on my still-flat belly. I had no clue whose
kid I was now carrying, but I’d always wanted a family. I prayed Raphael
didn’t want to get rid of it. We hadn’t had much time to talk
since, apparently, there was a rival vamp House determined to bring House
Saridan down.

The apartment door opened, and I knew who it was without needing to hear or
see him. Of course, no one else would come in here, but Raphael didn’t
even need to announce himself.

“Are you all right?” he asked as he stepped to the bedroom
doorway.

He hurried over to the bed and crouched in front of me, his height putting us
at eye-level. He ran his fingers through my hair, and I couldn’t help
but close my eyes and smile. His touch was so gentle and loving.

“I’m okay.”

I caught his hand and brought it to my mouth to kiss the tips of his fingers.
We’d only hugged, not even a single kiss in the couple of weeks
I’d been here, but I wasn’t sure how much longer I could wait for
him to make a move. Aches or not, I couldn’t deny how attracted I was to
him.

Raphael smiled. “Did you rest well?”

I nodded. “Slept like a baby, actually.”

His gaze shifted downward the slightest bit, and my breath caught. His smile
was wistful. “We need to talk, you and I.” He looked back up at
me. “Are you hungry?”

“I could definitely eat.”

Before he could move away and stand, I gripped his hand tighter. Raphael met
my gaze, those almost white eyes mesmerizing. I didn’t need to say
another word. He cupped the back of my neck with his other hand and pulled me
closer.

I couldn’t recall the last time I’d kissed anyone. I certainly
never let any of Boone’s guys do it. It was an act so intimate, so
personal, that I’d fought to save it for someone special.

Someone like Raphael.

His touch was featherlight, and his lips were surprisingly soft. I opened for
him without hesitation. He took his time, tongue stroking over mine, never
trying to take control or push the kiss into harder territory. I
could’ve kissed him for the rest of my life and never tired of it. He
tasted like the peppermint candies I’d discovered he had an affinity
for, and a slightly minty scent swirled in my head.

“If we don’t stop now,” he murmured on my lips,
“we’ll never get out of here.”

I chuckled. “In all honesty, I’d started to wonder if maybe this
attraction was one-sided.”

Raphael pulled back a little and caressed the side of my face. “Never. I
want you. I’ve wanted you since the first day I saw you in the hospital.
You needed to heal, though.” He raised one eyebrow at me. “You
still do.”

“I’ll admit I’m a little achy, but… please? I promise
I’ll tell you if I need to stop.”

“Tell you what. Let’s go eat. We can talk about us, including the
baby.”

I swallowed and stared into his eyes, searching for a hint of what he was
thinking. “I… I want to keep it. I’m sorry.”

“Never apologize for something you didn’t do,” Raphael said.
“And certainly don’t do it with regards to our child.”

Our child.

I somehow managed to blink away the threat of tears. He wanted to keep the
baby, too?

Raphael stood and helped me up as well. “Come on, mate. Food and
talking.”

After I got dressed, I followed him out of the apartment, my hand held gently
in his. I’d worried how he would react to my statement, and I kind of
felt like I was in a daze as he led us to the elevator and down to the
tower’s main dining room. According to Deacon, there were fifteen
floors, with his place as the penthouse at the top. Then there were several
floors for residents and the main dining hall. Raphael’s apartment was a
single-bedroom and much larger than one would expect.

Until now, we’d had food brought up to us, but I’d told him
yesterday I wanted to try to go out and be around others. I’d spent so
long being terrified, but now that I was safe, I wanted my life back.

* * *

Raphael

To say I was proud would’ve been an understatement. Not only was my
infatuation mutual, but Lucas was also venturing out of the apartment for the
first time since we’d brought him here about two weeks ago. I’d
known what he was to me the moment I’d seen him at the hospital. My
magic gave me the ability to detect things like that without the need for
blood. Despite what folks thought, not all of my magic was relegated to death.
It was why I’d moved him from his own small room to my apartment. I
could take care of him and the baby without worrying so much.

The idea that I was finally going to be able to have a child thrilled me to no
end. It didn’t matter to me who the biological father was, and I’d
hoped Lucas would want to keep the baby. We sat at a table in the dining room,
and one of the servers walked over to us, his smile genuine. Out of all the
guys in here, he was my favorite. He never acted like I was some kind of
pariah. I didn’t ask to be a Spiritori, but I also didn’t regret
it.

“Hey, stranger,” Dale said to me as he handed us our menus.
“How have you been? And… who’s the cutie?”

Lucas blushed and chuckled softly, lowering his gaze. I smiled at him, then up
at Dale.

“Doing quite well. Dale, this is my mate, Lucas. Lucas, this is Dale,
one of the best servers here.”

They shook hands, and Dale shot me a wink. “It’s great to meet
you, Lucas. What can I get you both to drink?”

“Usual for me,” I replied, referring to lemon water with a sprig
of mint. “Lucas?”

“Um… do you have unsweet tea?”

“We sure do,” Dale said. “I’ll have those out in a
moment.”

He left, and I reached over the table to touch Lucas’ hand. He turned it
palm up and linked our fingers together. It felt amazing.

“How are you feeling?”

“Sore, like I said, but getting better. I don’t know what sort of
docs your boss has employed here, but they’re damn good.”

I nodded. “That they are. I’ve had a few bumps and scrapes from
work over the years.”

Lucas tilted his head slightly, his gaze questioning. “Have people
always treated you like you’re contagious?”

I laughed. “For the most part, yes. You sure it doesn’t bother
you?”

“Doesn’t faze me at all,” Lucas said with a slight shrug.
“It’s who you are. Besides, death mage stuff aside, I’ve
seen the real you in private.”

This time, I swear I felt myself blush, if that was possible. I’m sure
my pale face was certainly a bit pinker. “Believe it or not, I much
prefer diplomacy when presented with the option. Unlike my coworkers, namely
the Venari, I’m not a violent person. Not inherently a pacifist, mind
you, but I try my best to avoid fights.”

“Do you enjoy being a Spiritori?”

Dale returned with our drinks, and we ordered our food. I waited until he left
again before replying to the question many folks have asked me over the
majority of my life. I took a sip of my lemon water and sighed.

“As a child, I often wished I’d been born something else, to be
completely honest.” I gestured to myself. “No matter where I went,
people knew what I was. Same thing happened to my alpha father. It’s
useful in many circumstances, but the stigma is incredibly prevalent.
It’s why my folks divorced. My omega dad got tired of the looks,
whispers, what have you, whenever they went somewhere.”

“Damn,” Lucas muttered. He reached across the table and gripped my
fingers gently. “I’m sorry.”

I smiled. “Thanks. But enough about me. I want to hear all about you.
The past couple of weeks have been a bit nuts, between you healing and
Deacon’s ongoing issues with Lorthaen. We haven’t had a lot of
time together.”

“Not much to tell, really,” Lucas said. “I had an older
brother, but he died in a car accident when I was twelve. My dads are still
alive, though my omega father isn’t doing too well. We think it’s
dementia.”

“Wow. That has to be hard on them both.”

Lucas nodded. “My alpha dad is his primary caregiver now, utterly
devoted. I moved out about four years ago, but I still visit.”

“Dare I ask how you ended up working for Boone?”

He grimaced and visibly shuddered. “A ‘friend,’” he
replied, using air quotes with his free hand. “Needless to say, dude is
no longer anyone I speak to. Hell, Boone had me blindfolded anytime he whored
me out, so my ex-friend could’ve been one of the assholes to use
me.”

I wanted to erase the pain from that entire situation, but I couldn’t.
Before I could answer, Dale came by with our food. We tucked into it, and I
couldn’t help but grin when Lucas moaned in appreciation.

“Told you,” I said. “Deacon spares no expense.”

Deacon

“How’s he doing? Fitting in okay?”

The dock foreman, Toryn, leaned against the frame of the plate-glass window we
stood at as we watched the workers in the shipping area below. “Seems to
be. He gets along with the guys pretty well.”

I glanced at him, one eyebrow raised. “But…”

He sighed. “He struggles to stay on task sometimes, and he tends to
daydream a good bit. Not a bad thing inherently, but not great when working
around forklifts and eighteen-wheelers.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle. The young man who’d captured my
attention weeks ago was indeed a bit flighty at times. According to Cam, Bobby
Kirkland had always been that way, and a diagnosis of ADHD as a pre-teen had
answered a lot of questions. He needed structure and routine, in my opinion.
I’d hoped working here would give him that, but he still seemed to have
trouble staying focused on occasion.

The bell signaling the end of the workday rang out in the warehouse. I spotted
Bobby going toward the door that led into the large breakroom where the
lockers were. Beside me, Toryn snickered softly.

“I’m surprised you haven’t claimed him yet.”

I turned away from the window. “Soon.”

I followed him out of my office and downstairs. Most of the workers were
already heading home, but a few — including Bobby — remained in the
breakroom. Toryn patted my shoulder and went to his own locker. The others
glanced over at me, and a couple of them shot Bobby teasing smirks. Even from
the doorway, I saw him blush. There wasn’t any hint of jealousy with
this group, thankfully. When Bobby met my gaze, I discreetly gestured for him
to join me upstairs. He nodded, and I headed back up. Once I claimed him,
we’d be able to speak telepathically and not worry about coworker
issues. Then again, he also wouldn’t be working either, but that was a
discussion for another day.

A few minutes after I sat down on the small couch in my office, the door
opened. Bobby smiled, though there was a good bit of nervousness behind it. He
shut the door and sat a couple of feet beside me at my urging. I twisted a
little to face him and got comfortable.

“How was work?”

“Good,” he said, fidgeting a bit with his hands, like he
didn’t know what to do with them. One leg bounced a little.

“Have you had any problems with your coworkers?”

Bobby didn’t answer right away, which told me everything I needed to
know. I reached over and put my hand on his knee, stilling the movement almost
immediately. His eyes widened for a moment, making him seem far younger than
thirty-one. Of course, at my age, he was young.

“What is it? You can tell me anything, Bobby.”

He swallowed and tore his gaze from mine. I waited while he thought about
whatever he wanted to say. Finally, he spoke. “Just a couple of guys who
seem to think I’m an idiot.” He looked back up at me.
“I’m not. I just get… distracted sometimes, hyper focused
at others.”

“No, you’re definitely not an idiot. You wouldn’t be working
here if so,” I said. “Have they done or said anything directly to
you?”

“No, but I’ve caught a few whispers here and there,” he
replied. “Not to mention the weird glances.” He shrugged and
sighed. “I feel like I’m back in fucking high school, to be
honest. It’s ridiculous.”

I chuckled softly and gave his knee a gentle squeeze. “I have a
potential solution then, but I think we need to have a good, long talk before
we go any further.”

Bobby nodded and stared down at my hand. “I honestly started to worry
that this was a one-sided thing,” he muttered.

Unable to resist, I lifted my hand to cup his chin, tilting his head until I
was looking into those soulful brown eyes. I stroked my thumb across his lower
lip, and he let out a soft gasp. “I assure you, this is very much
mutual. That said, there are details we must go over first.”

“Those details have anything to do with your necklace?”

I smiled and lifted the thin chain from under my shirt. Light reflected off
the tiny handcuff pendant accented with garnets. “Indeed. How about we
have dinner, and we can chat?”

“Sounds good to me. I need to let Dad and Cam know where I’ll be.
I don’t have to, but it’s an old habit.”

“Absolutely, and a good one to have. Do you have any food preferences or
sensitivities I need to know about?”

“I’m lactose intolerant, but that’s it.”

“Understood. Let Beau and Cam know what’s going on and then meet
me in my chambers upstairs. Normally, I’d take you out, but the things
we need to discuss are not for anyone else’s ears.”

His gaze shifted a bit, and I couldn’t ignore the urge any longer.
Fingers gripping his chin, I tipped his head and leaned close. Bobby’s
soft moan the moment our lips touched sent almost overwhelming need rushing
through me. His scent — a decadent mix of soap, shampoo, and something woodsy
yet sweet — filled every part of my psyche. The urge to bite flitted through
my mind, but I shoved it away for now. I knew he was mine; I didn’t need
to taste his blood to confirm it.

Bobby opened for me, pliant, eager, and so insanely delicious. I released his
chin and cupped the back of his head, pushing the kiss into hungrier territory
for both of us. Before I could lose control and take him right here, though, I
made myself pull back. He grumbled, and I nipped his lower lip before soothing
it with my tongue.

“Dinner,” I murmured. “I need to taste every inch of you but
not before we talk.”

A ritual decades ago leads Beau to the one person he never expected to
meet: his fated mate.

Detective Beau Kirkland has to work directly with the local vampire house to
find a murderer, but that’s the easy part. The difficult part? His attraction
to Garrett Dawson’s, one of House Saridan’s top hunters.

Garrett Dawson’s methods are brutal but very effective, even for a vampire.
When a mortal detective begins working with House Saridan, Garrett finds
himself unable to ignore the attraction between them.

EXCERPT

Garrett

There were few things I truly loved in this world, and one was currently in my
hand as I took the elevator up to the fifteenth floor of Saridan Tower. No one
else shared my addiction to the most amazingly sweet coffee concoction
currently sending copious amounts of caffeine through my system. I stepped off
the elevator on the top floor and headed down the hall to the usual conference
room. I didn’t get any farther than the doorway, though. I simply froze, body
alternating between hot and cold.

Normally, these meetings were just the three of us lead Venari and Deacon.

Not today, apparently.

Beau Kirkland looked up at me, eyes wide for a moment. No one said a word —
not even Deacon. Somehow, I got my feet to move and sat opposite the omega
cop. It took more effort than I really had this morning to focus on work and
not the stupidly hot human across from me.

I didn’t go for twinks like the others. I liked my men older, more
experienced. Beau fit that requirement with ease. His short brown hair bore a
little bit of gray here and there, and his dark chocolate-colored eyes studied
me whenever I glanced at his face. He was a few inches shorter than my own
six-three, and unlike most omegas, he was a bit muscular due to his job.
Dressed in his dark navy uniform, he presented the most fucking delectable
package on the planet. I cursed silently and tore my gaze from his when all
blood began rushing south.

Deacon cleared his throat and looked at each of us. “I’m sure you all know one
another, but for protocol’s sake, I’d like to introduce Officer Beau Kirkland.
He’s our liaison within the police department. He’s also the one handling this
latest case on their end. Officer Kirkland, these are my head Venari: Nikolai
Hart, Victor Pace, and Garrett Dawson.”

Beau nodded. “Good morning, gentlemen.”

We exchanged the usual pleasantries before Deacon continued. “I’m stepping
back for now,” he said, glancing at me briefly, “but I’m here if needed. To
that end, the table’s yours, Officer Kirkland.”

“Thank you,” Beau said. He handed each of us several folders. “Eight victims
so far, all completely drained. Eyewitnesses have seen the perp in passing,
but no one can agree on a description.”

“Could be a Lupyn,” Vic said as he flipped through the contents of one of the
folders.

“That was my assumption, but you all know far better than we do if that’s the
case.”

I went through the first folder in front of me. Crime scene photos, pics of
the victims post-mortem, notes, and statements. I scanned over everything and
couldn’t disagree with the shapeshifter idea. It would make sense.

“What do you need from us?” Nik asked Beau. “We’re more than happy to work
with you and your folks.”

I’m not sure I would’ve gone that far, but we did need to get this monster off
the streets. I might not have been particularly nuts about humans, but that
didn’t mean I wished them dead. My methods were saved for my own kind.

Beau passed out papers to us. “These are the last few places he was sighted.
He’s a vampire, so we humans are outgunned here. We can help corner him, but
capture is a different story altogether.”

Nik nodded. “Agreed. Well, we’re here and ready to go hunting.”

I didn’t miss the slight grimace on Beau’s face before he managed to school it
into something more neutral. Apparently, neither did Deacon, but the man just
remained silent.

“Thank you,” Beau said. “Please keep me updated on everything. In the
meantime, I’ll be at the station downtown, trying to narrow our possible
location leads.”

“Thank you for coming to us,” Deacon said. “I guarantee we will be in touch.
These guys are my best hunters, and I have no doubt they’ll find this son of a
bitch.”

Despite the situation, Beau smiled. “Thank you very much.”

The others left the room, though Beau shot me a cryptic look before stepping
out the door. I stayed seated, knowing Deacon had something to say. Sure
enough, as soon as we were alone, he leaned back in his chair, arms crossed.

“Is this going to be an issue?”

I could’ve played dumb, but he already knew everything. There wasn’t any
point. “No. I’m fully capable of working with him.”

Deacon raised one eyebrow. “Really? Because pheromones say otherwise.”

I managed to avoid scowling at him. Lupyns were more sensitive to things like
that than Venari. “Unlike Nik, I’m perfectly capable of keeping my dick in my
pants, Deacon.”

He didn’t say anything for a few seconds. He was far older than us, and being
under his scrutiny made even me feel like a scolded kid sometimes. “Don’t let
it get the best of you, Garrett. His job involves danger, and you can’t
protect him from that unless you’re mated and bonded completely.”

“Who said I was –” I snapped my mouth shut at his glare.

“I’m old, not an idiot.” Deacon leaned forward and put his arms on the table.
“Either fight this until the perp is in custody or fucking claim Beau. I can’t
have you out there distracted. Understood?”

“Yes,” I replied, biting back a growl.

“Good. Dismissed.”

I stood abruptly, grabbed the folders and paper, and left the conference room.
I made it halfway down the hall before Nik and Vic both cornered me. Fuck.

“That didn’t go well, did it?” Vic asked.

“No,” I snarled.

I continued walking, and they followed me to the elevator. I stabbed the DOWN
button and had to unclench my fist before I gave into the urge to hit
something. In the door’s reflection, I saw Nik and Vic exchange cautious
glances.

We all stepped into the elevator and took it to the lobby. Without another
word said, it was a given where we’d wind up. Colby’s was the city’s best
diner with the most amazing coffee blends. Maybe the combination of carbs,
sugar, and caffeine would calm me down because just the thought of claiming
Beau sure as fuck wasn’t doing it.

Quite the opposite, actually.

I was hard as a fucking rock.
